Lets not get things twisted, the argument about Ikwerre and Igbos has been an ongoing thing long before there was anything called IPOB. Everybody is free to choose whatever identity they want. The problem is when some people cannot stick to one identity. I used the example of Chibuike Amaechi and Uche Okwukwu because they are well know Ikwerre men who say the are Igbo. The reality is that there are many Ikwerres out there, particularly in the Elele axis, who say they are Igbo.

I said it on another thread that my friend is dating an Ikwerre girl who doesnt joke with her Igboness, but the girls uncle who is also an Ikwerre man, says they are not Igbos. If there are Ikwerres who say they are Igbo, and those who say they are not, they should all go sort out the identity crisis that has engulfed them.

It is very important because there is no way to tell the difference between any Igbo and Ikwerre, they speak the same language and answer the same names.

This is very similar to the Ilorin case.

Although most Ilorin people believe and accept that they are Yorubas.

However, the elites sometimes claim non-Yoruba identities and these are the descendants of Fulani Jihardists, Nupe merchants and Hausa slaves in Ilorin.

In Ilorin, however virtually every body is united under the banner of Islam (I haven't seen a true Ilorin Indigene who is a Christian), so Islamic indentity and centuries of complex inter-tribal marriages has blurred tribal indentities. It's difficult to differentiate one Ilorin man from another.

Obio/Akpor people have representatives in Ogbakor Ikwerre and we know the official position of Ogbakor Ikwerre on Ikwerre identity. Its a Biniphilic one.

Normally Ohanaeze Ndiigbo should have since released official public message denouncing Ikwerre and follow it up with sacking all the Ikwerre leeches in Ohanaeze Ndiigbo, and then warning the Nigerian public that any Ikwerre claiming Igbo are committing impersonation.

Membership of an ethnic group is based on self-identity i.e you are igbo if you agree that indeed you are an Igbo.
There's no universally acceptable and unambigous definition of who is an igbo or not. The same is true for Nupe, Tiv, Yoruba, Igala.

You have no right to say Mr X is not Igbo if he calls himself Igbo.

So you IPOB should stop quoting this Uche Okwukwu,because you are only underlying the failure of Igbo leadership as epitomized by Ohanaeze when you use Uche Okwukwu as example of Ikwerre being Igbo.

From the ways I see it, Ikwerre looks like a hybrid of tribes or an amalgam of several ancient smaller tribes +Igbo settlers+ Bini migrants+ Ijawa and/Ogoni minorities.

Obiigbo being carved out into Rivers does not erase the fact that the indigenous people of Obiigbo remains Igbo and their land remains part and parcel of Igbo land.

In the case of Obiigbo, there has been a clear attempt by non Igbos in Rivers to deIgbonize them, which started with renaming of the town from Obiigbo to Oyiigbo, and then claims and counter claims by Rivers people that Obiigbo people are migrants in their own land and should vacate the land and migrate to Abia state.

These Igbophobic elements in Rivers state don't seem to realize that states are artificial creation and that Obiigbo people have always occupied their land up until it was transferred to Rivers state.

1) The non-Igbo peoples of Rivers State don't have the power to change anybody's ethnic group.

2) The People of Oyigbo LGA, Rivers State can call for boundary adjust to take them to Rivers State.

It's a constitutionally allowed process.

The people whose accounts were frozen were not the ordinary 'foot soldiers' of the protests but the real leaders/coordinators who received money from certain sources to fund the protests.

States in Nigeria are units of Administration and not necessarily ethnic homelands whose boundaries may be difficult to establish.



Geographical landmarks, certain Historical events and sometimes aspirations of the people were used to set boundaries between States.

Examples of what you raised abound all over the country.

Jebba is divided into two, one part in Kwara and the other part in Niger State.

Owena is partly in Osun and partly in Ondo State.

Akokoland is partly in Ondo & partly in Edo State
KareKare peoples are partly in Bauchi & partly in Yobe State.

Some Ekiti Towns are carved into Kwara State (They even have EKiti LGA, Kwara State) while the bulk of Ekiti form their own State in the S/West.

1) Economic Development: The S/East has worse Poverty rates than the Niger-Delta.

Compare &constrast the Budget & HDI of Niger-Delta States with that of the S/East.


2) Infrastructural Development like Int'l Airports, Seaports, Shopping Malls, Dual carriage Highways, Housing Estates, Standards Hotels, Stadium and Electricity supply are better in the Niger-Delta than the S/East.


3) Land mass and Population: Cross-River & Akwa-Ibom States combined are more than the whole of the S/East in landmass.

The combined population of the Niger-Delta States are higher than that of the S/East.

4) Political Relevance: There are more registered voters & Collected PVCs in the Niger-Delta States than in the S/East.

Indigenes of the Niger-Delta have held the highest posts in the land and they have better control of the leading opposition party than the Indigenes of the S/East.

5) Economic Viability: With greater population, access to the Sea, International Borders, Oil &Gas Deposit, the Niger-Delta > S/East

Lets look at Rivers state as example. Oyigbo/Obigbo, Etche and Egbema all used to be in old Imo state. They were carved into Rivers state. Infact, the Egbema Igbos have half their community in Imo(Ohaji-Egbema LGA) and the other half in Rivers(Egbema Ndoni LGA)

So you really think that if there was a referendum, the Egbema people would vote to lose half their community to Nigeria in the name of Rivers state? Or you think the Etche people(originally known as Igbo-Etche) will forget that are Igbos when a referendum comes?

You would be surprised how many communities in Rivers State have not yet forgotten that they are Igbos. Same goes for Delta State

The issue is that the referendum will NOT hold in Rivers State.
