1) Poverty index of a State measures poverty and NOT wealth in a particular State.

For instance, if the poverty index in Kogi State is 15%, this doesn't mean that the remaining 85% of the people in Kogi State are wealthy.

2) A particular administration of a State is not exactly the same thing as the State just as the Buhari Administration is NOT exactly the same thing as Nigeria.

Why is this very difficult for some people to understand?

What is the rice production capacity of Ebonyi state, before and after the ban on importation of rice?

What special support did the FG provide to ndi Ebonyi, or is it a case of "the lion not wanting to feed on grass, no matter the policy in the jungle"?

What is the poverty index of Enugu, Abia or Ebonyi States according to your own research that is better than that of NBS?

reality1010:
OP, the poverty index is fake. Those who gave that index lack primary data on what they gave. This is OLUWOLE statistics which of course you know is fat fake. Please go on a research of production in Aba and Onitsha you will know better. Because south east doesn't post fake data does not mean the region is poor. Aside Lagos and Kano no other region can boost of economic activities like Abs and Onitsha.

Luckymama:
Personal experience. In my husbands village somewhere in Owerri, there were so many individuals who sent money home from all over the place to assist their brothers who were based at home. My husband’s extended family alone contributed over a million Naira. Foodstuffs were bought and shared to the young men and family based in the East. That’s a spirit that’s totally lacking in the South West.

What I am trying to say is that hunger was biting everyone everywhere. But while those in the East have developed a communal spirit, the west are looking up to Govt. At the same time it is important to remember that all of this money I am talking about came from people who do not live in the East, so they do not contribute to the economy. These people pay taxes where they live. They employ Labour and pay rent, pay for services etc. So while their brothers may not necessarily starve because they regularly send money home, it’s not really helping the economy.

The answer is simple- The land and people on it.

The Land: Osun State has a larger land mass than Enugu State.

Most of this land is used to plant Cocoa, Timber ,Cashew and Palm Trees which are producing Agricultural products that are EXPORTED.

The Land in Enugu may not be utilized for cash crops production. They plant Ugwu ,maize and cassava for local consumption

The People: A significant number of the people in Enugu are employed by Government and it's agencis which are less pronounced in Osun, meaning the people of Osun have to embrace alternative means of livelihood- Agriculture.

Poultry and cat fish farming are also widely practiced in Osun State. Proximity to Ibadan/Lagos ensure good market sales.

manuelreports:
Kaduna and Enugu are almost mate, the issue is how can Enugu be poorer than Osun State.

You keep making the same mistakes, your method of assessing poverty is by taking selective pictures of few streets which is NOT the method used by any reputable research institutions.

If the NBS statistics are wrong or you feel are manipulated to make your region look bad, the most appropriate it to refute this is by publishing the results of your own research works or that of other reputable organizations like the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Black people always like to give excuses.

This your post is addressing the poverty index issues.

Is poverty more prevalent in Zamfara than Rivers State? Is poverty lesser in Anambra than Enugu, Gombe or Kogi States?

Why is poverty more prevalent in Ebonyi than Delta State and what can be done to provide solutions?

ificatchmodeh:
NBS ... Nigeria is a funny country. They government knows the truth about Nigeria, but won’t say.. rather the will twist it to sustain propaganda

2012 Okonjo went to senate and make a special case on opening southeast for robust economic development and their generating federal revenue.

Agenda against the development of south east and by extension south south..is an arrangement to weak this regions and growth.. level.

South south produces 89% of Nigeria revenue.. how many cities in south south is developed with enough federal presence? And active federal parastatals.
How many of the south south natives occupy offices in those federal establishments in the state..
From delta to riVers, akwaibom. Bayelsa.. cross rivers?
They will be smart to tell us to hold our governors accountable.. with the huge allocation hey collect

But they’re busy with Lagos — Kano railway
They’re busy upgrading MMA,Kano,Jigawa,Maiduguri, airports .. down south they will tell you RiVers airport is an international airport and functioning
Is riVers the only state in Nigeria deltA?

What’s holding the same Federal government to establish a world class sea port in the Nigeria DeltA region
But will conveniently build two and sustained in Lagos

They will tell you that the hostility in niger deltA chased out company headquarters to Lagos grin
Meanwhile southwest is rated a hostile region

I’m using my area as example.. for you to understand what igbos are in for..

If an international body should conduct same samples .. results will be different.. and correct, but that changes nothing in Nigeria index.. they will always dish same or modify version propaganda anytime they do dish theirs.

For me.. I’ve traveled around this country and seen things for my self.. likewise many like me.

Any statistics from Nigeria don’t mean anything to us, even to the international community. The leave among us and understand our politics. Is just to massage ego. Nothing meaningful.

Since those statistics of high gdp.. poverty index, poor states rich states.

What’s has changed.. in those regions?

Bro understand this country and laugh at whatever the dishes..
International community treat Nigerians, how our leaders treat us..

Actually, it is very possible to think home but with different strategies;

Massive Industrialization and Modern commercial Agriculture.

1) Industrialization: Every State had raw materials.

Dried Plantain leaves plus starch which are surplus in Ogun, Oyo and Osun State can be used to produce certain types of paper.

Kogi and Ekiti States have so many montains which can be sources of raw materials for Jewelries and precious stones.

Clay deposits in Anambra, Enugu and Imo States can be raw materials for burnt bricks industries and ceramics industries.

Imagine if ALL the ceremic tiles used in Nigeria are produced in Anambra and Enugu States.

2) Modern Commercial Agriculture: we can produce 10 tonnes of cotton from the Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Niger and Katsina States which along with polyester from our oil refineries can be used to produce 70% of the textiles materials we need in Nigieria and 40% of the vegetable (cotton seed oil) we consume in Nigieria.

This is the best way to reduce poverty in the whole of Nigeria.

The Southeast has the smallest Landmass with relatively high population (high population density).

It will need a different approach to Agriculture like the Israelis are doing.

Throwback:
How do you expect the Igbos to think home, when the wealth that they are using to even develop their villages, is from the commerce they are engaged in outside Igboland, within Nigeria or Abroad?

How can you think home when you fled home to escape poverty?

The best that can happen is to continue to work harder outside of home, to be financially empowered to send more money home.
PoliticsRe: Igbos Outside Southeast, Our Region's Poverty Index Is Rising! by oyatz(m): 6:58pm On May 07, 2020
Most Nigerians don't think deeply and only react to issues largely based on superficial (emotional) feelings.

1) The rating is Poverty Index and is NOT opposite of Wealth.

2) The Poverty Index was NOT calculated by the boss of the NBS.

3) Poverty in a particular State is a reflection of the inability of the people in that State to dominate their ENVIRONMENT.

This simply means the inability to use what is AVAILABLE in their ENVIRONMENT to solve their basic needs.

4) The ENVIRONMENT of the States are NOT the same, so different methods will have to be used in different States.

5) In Ekiti State: A montaineous region where most residents practice subsistence farming. There are no industries to utilize the available resources into finished products, so poverty will be higher than in Osun.

Osun State: A relatively large fertile land that sustained cash crops plantations (Cocoa, Timber and Plantain) with lesser population density.
Poultry products and cat fish production which are easily taken to economically bouyant buyers in Ibadan/Lagos ensure some better returns on investment.

Proximity to Lagos provides easy access for exportation of some of her agricultural produce.

Anambra: Small land mass with high population density.
Substantial small and medium scale industries which utilize few locally sourced materials for finished products=> some money for the citizens. How this only works in Nnewi and Onitsha.

Sokoto State: A large land mass but with reduced rainfall. Most of the agricultural produce from the State are for local consumption and aren't exported.

However there are also so substantial population, many of who only engage in low paying jobs.
Most of their women don't work at all.

Results= High poverty.

In Summary:

*The Land

And

*The population (their number, level of education, skills etc) residing on the land will largely determine the poverty index.

Disintegration in most cases is similar to divorce and divorce is more often than not, conducted under an aura of hostility.

Going by the rhetorics of Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB and most young Igbos online, there is already an atmosphere of hostility surrounding the agitations for Biafra and it's not going to be reciprocated with 'love' from the rest of Nigeria.

DesChyko:
Any idea how the Biafra that is yet to be fits this bill already?

Yes. In the 1980s targetting illegal migrants during the economic decline.

It didn't occur to me that the South African government were behind that.

The reasons for these were clearly spelt out, US being a huge target for terrorist activities and these countries having security concerns within and identity and information management issues. These are key for a country like US. Nigeria must have a concrete reason to do this.

Iran and Israel have been at loggerheads probably before my father was born. Why should this be of any relevance here?

On what grounds would Nigeria choose to be hostile or oppressive to Biafra?

Let me contribute to this discussion.

1) The Historical backgrounds and worldviews of people in the core North is DIFFERENT from people in the South and these are molded by the religion of ISLAM.

2) The Legacy the the Uthman dan Fodio's Jihard.

The Jihard sought to correct some perceived evils in the various Hausa kingdoms by toppling the ruling Hausa Dynasties and establish an egalitarian community in which every body will be equally and justifiably treated under the banner Islam.

3) To achieve num-2 above, the Fulani Jihadists stressed Religious (Islamic) identity over all other identies, including ethnicities.

4) Politics of Colonial Nigeria. Those who have lived together under the Sokoto Caliphate practicing similar (Islamic) culture and inter-marriages for about 100 years before Colonial rule were regarded by the British Colonial Government as one homogeneous unit- the Hausa-Fulanis.

5) There are examples of similar different but similar ethnic groups/Towns being regarded as one unit (of administration) during the colonial rule e g Ogori-Mangogo, Ikwerre-Igbo, Sango-Otta.

Recently, I have also seen some people from Ilorin referring to themselves as 'Yoruba-Fulanis'

Openbusiness:
Yes, please, i need more clarification. but first, let me say that i appreciate your contribution. Out of curiosity, i have asked this same questions some years back to the hausa people i knew in lagos and this your explanation is same thing they said. And the main thing or main part of the explanation is that INTERMARRIAGE thing, that you hardly see a fulani family that don't have hausa relatives and vice versa in the North. But for me, my curiosity lies in why such a bond has gotten so strong to the point that 2 distinct tribes and people now almost see themselves as a homogeneous unit. Why do i feel there might be more to it than is being covered by your first explanation is because, there are other tribes too where you have a lot of intermarriage too, for example in the deep south, igbos mix with other southern tribes a lot, and it is common place to see south south tribes with igbo relatives, in the southwest, yorubas marry igbo women a lot and for the sake of cultural similarity, let me better use something like Yorubas and Edo people, or Yorubas and Urhobo people, share lots of cultural similarities and they intermarry a lot, many edo or benin families have yoruba relatives and vice versa, same thing with Urhobo but still they see themselves are heterogeneous groups, as different tribes and they don't merge their tribal identity into a single unit like you have with the hausa-fulani. So i just wonder if the bond goes beyond culture or religion, or marriage, is there some history to it or is there like a treaty of unification?

Excuse me sir, are you aware that the River Niger didn't start at Onitsha?

Are you aware that River Nigeria run across several countries before entering Nigeria through Kebbi State, then flows through Niger State, then Kogi State before reaching Onitsha?

Can Niger Republic or Mali just enter Nigeria and start dredging River Niger to it's outlet into the Atlantic ocean because they want ship to move through the river and dock at the River Port of Niamey, Niger Republic?

DesChyko:
Dredging is the removal of sediments and debris from the bottom of lakes, rivers, harbors, and other water bodies. It is a routine necessity in waterways around the world because sedimentation—the natural process of sand and silt washing downstream—gradually fills channels and harbors.

'Dredging often is focused on maintaining or increasing the depth of navigation channels, anchorages, or berthing areas to ensure the safe passage of boats and ships. Vessels require a certain amount of water in order to float and not touch bottom. This water depth continues to increase over time as larger and larger ships are deployed. Since massive ships carry the bulk of the goods imported into the country, dredging plays a vital role in the nation's economy.'

Be sure of this. The rivers will become international waters. Can Nigeria obstruct passage on International waters? I guess not.

So that we can be very sure of all those who were scammed and those who weren't.

Manufacturing and Agriculture have long term gestational period before reaching returns on investment. Only true entrepreneurs with passion for them can break through in these areas.

Most wealthy Nigerians become wealthy through Government patronage or more appropriately through corruption.
Those that invest their shares of the loot invest in businesses that will yield almost instant profits and will not require serious expertise to run e g Hotel and Petrol Stations businesses.

wink2015:
NIGERIA BUSINESSMEN SHOULD INVEST MORE ON MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES AND AGRICULTURE.

The whole country is saturated with schools, petrol station and hotels which are not adding sustainable value to the economy of Nigeria and its citizens.

For the schools where are the parents that can even have the funds to afford to send their ward to those universities.

Nigeria businessmen should copy Dangote, Innoson and the rest of the entrepreneur who are into manufacturing.

IN DELTA STATE FOR EXAMPLE, there are hardly manufacturing industries.

What you can find in Asaba, Warri, Effurun, Sapele etc are HOTELS, PRIVATE SCHOOLS, AND FILLING STATIONS.

NO AGRO ALLIED INDUSTRIES.

The Igbos are the only people that mainly invest in manufacturing industries.

Just look at the way Captain Hosa Okunbor the owner of Wells Carlton Hotel Abuja and the Ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar are laying off staff just because of the side effect of Coronavirus.
