Of course, that's how the real world work . There are non lawyers who own law firms but its best to invest in an area that one has competitive and comparative advantages. we should encourage 1)mass coverage of Nigerians under social health insurance 2) the privatization of these teaching hospitals. sogodihno: who cares about leading hospitals? my point is av seen non doctors having an hospital and making it big and doing well. And also seen pharmacist and non pharmacist having a pharmacy and making it big too. The point is anyone can own anything, be it pharmacy, hospital etc if u av d money and the means. |

Doctors have existed for thousands of years and almost through out this period, until very recently, they were self-employed. Government employed doctors is a recent phenomenon and in Nigeria, this has significant impact on the medical profession. In order to move to the next level, it is better that most doctors become self-employed and independent of government. |

I hope the Nigerian medical practitioners are learning from this brouhaha and start to gradually wean the profession off government domination.
Doctors should partner with other doctors and interested private investors to build more private hospitals which can be nurtured to be like Mayo clinics, Cleveland clinics, John Hopkins hospital all in the US or Apollo hospitals in India. This will reverse the direction of medical tourism in Nigeria's favour. |

Please note that the Yaba and Kano medical schools DIDN'T award any diploma to anyone. They only issued certificate of attendance with which the graduate can continue his studies in UK. nelszx: Exactly what I wanted to hear (that's all) And the other programmes she called, did any start in Nigeria? I only picked a point where she said others are glorified technicians (diploma courses). At least you have acknowledged some graduated from yaba medical school which didn't give them MBBS but a diploma which they used in going to the UK for more intensive training (not until UI started the first MBBS programme). Well she's entitled to her opinion and by the way I'm way too educated to be brainwashed by anybody. Should I need fact as reference, i know how to sort for one. |

Medicine and Surgery didn't start in Nigeria, let alone at Yaba Tech. You have been brainwashed by the AMLSN for long. The Yaba Medical school was a PRE-CLINICAL school and those who graduated from it had to travel to UK to to complete their training in the teaching hospitals with Medical College, University of London or Dublin. Sometimes because of paucity of funds ,some of these graduates worked in hospitals in Nigeria as Assistant medical officers (NOT DOCTORS) for 1-2years under the supportive supervision of British medical doctors and saved enough money to travel to UK to complete their medical degrees and become Medical officers (MO) nelszx: And medicine and surgery / dentistry started at Yaba tech as what please if I may ask? Does that make them upgraded technicians too? |

Do you know the minds of all doctors that you came with that conclusion that doctors look down on other health workers? There are all kinds of health workers in the private hospitals, yet there is no this kind of agitations, JOHESU and anti-doctors postures. #Privatizethetertiaryhospitals Solababa91: I want you to know that this fight about emoluments have been on ground for a long time, but let me tell you the most recent episode, the strike JOHESU embarked on in 2016 was to push their grievances, the FG yielded, and promised to effect the payment from Sept last year or thereabout, JOHESU worried why it was not effected made it findings and found out NMA has hands in it, so JOHESU has a form of SOS had to publish that so as to inform the general public what they have been enduring so as to press home their demand. And as far as am concerned, there is nothing wrong with that, it is false that JOHESU wants equal pay with Doctors as NMA is saying because I. The amount JOHESU wants was also published, and it is not at par with NMA's. ii. The professional bodies under JOHESU (Nurses, Pharmacist, MLS and others) do not even get equal pay so how on earth would they be clamoring for equal pay with Doctors. I want you to know that disrespect is not only in name calling, or body language. That Doctors even see other licensed Professionals as people who don't treat patients or irrelevant and feels they are all encompassing and can do every man's job is equally disrespect. A Doctor would write a referral to a Physiotherapist and include in it the type of treatment that should be given the patient, I wonder why the Doctor will even refer in the first place he should have treated the patient himself since he knows what to do. This is disrespectful, the Physiotherapist is trained, licensed and certified to do whatever he deems fit, he is aware of his duties and responsibilities for God sake, he is not a TECHNICIAN, to be dictated to, he has gone through anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology for a number of years any other courses DEEMED FIT for his training and thereafter a Licensed and certified Professional to practice. The attitude you got from the MLS intern you referred to though wrong, I condemn it, but is a resultant effect of what she sees Doctors do to other professionals long before now. Do you know there are Doctors that still write referrals with prescription sheets? Even when the referral sheet is available? It is disrespectful, a lot of issues needs to be resolved. Until Doctors see patient care as multidisciplinary and that patient condition dictates who the head of a Medical team will be then, will we get it right, and there will be harmony amongst all professionals but if they still feel they are all in all, we are in for a long thing.
P.S.: You will be the first Doctor to approach issues politely on this thread, may be you serve as a point of reference to other arrogant ones. Once again I commend your maturity. |

Let's look at empirical evidence, not personal wishes or opinions. Outsidd of government, All the leading hospitals in Nigeria are owned and headed by doctors- St.Nicholas, EKO, Lagoon, Abuja Clinics, Reddington, First consultants, Ibadan central, Group Medicals, Cedecrest, Molayo, Nordica fertility centre, Ace Medicals,Otta, Havana, Surulere etc. Name the leading hospitals that JOHESU members or their much touted health administrators established and nurtured to such enviable status. mfm04622: So you want to earn same amount with doctors? Do you think it is fair for you a lab technician that spent 3 years in school and a doctor that spent 6 to earn the same? When it comes to administration of hospitals, yes doctors should not be head of hospitals. Doctors don't have any advantage over other professionals when it comes to managing hospitals. |
Health › Re: Drop A Suggestion On How To Solve The NMA Vs Johesu Issue? by oyatz(m): 4:07pm On May 28, 2018 |
You don't even know what you are saying. A radiologist is a medical doctor with postgraduate specialization in radiology. xreal: Do you know the rigours pharmacist go through before being certified? Same goes to medical health records professionals who renew their certificates every year (either employed or not).
Relate with the physiotherapist, Radiologist and you will know how vital their role is in the hospital.
Don't let us mention nurses.
Being a medical doctor is by choice, just as being a medical laboratory scientist is.
Discrimination shouldn't be that obvious in a government established hospital.
Yes, doctors can earn more from call duty allowances, pharmacist also run call, virtually most of these professionals run one of either overtime, call, and so on. The difference can come from there and not salary scale.
Also if I am a Radiologist, let an experienced radiologist head my department and not a medical doctor.
I am sure if JOHESU keeps quiet as they had been, a medical doctor will head the works department ( if that hasn't been happening already). |

Dele Momodu's father hailed from Edo State but was living in Ile-Ife where he met his mum,(a Yoruba lady from Gbogan Olofi) married her and they gave birth to Dele Momodu there because the father was the chief Launder of the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Adesoji Adefemi. He also studied Yoruba Language in his First degree at OAU, Ile-Ife may be because technically speaking he grew up in the Palace of the Ooni and he is mixed Edo-Yoruba that has lived nearly all his life in Yoruba land. janellemonae: Dele momodu is from edo state.
