Romance › Re: Why Do Many Nigerian Men Woo Ladies Using English? by ozimec(m): 11:28pm On May 02, 2017 |
fratermathy: I was on my own "jejely" trying to buy kebab, popularly known as "suya" in Nigeria, and thinking of how best to spice my dinner, when one young man just breezed in from nowhere and with a peculiar accent, uttered "Why does you let my heart broke like this" . I turned to the person that shot me at the back with missiles of words and found him well dressed and obviously talking to his girlfriend or "toastee". He also stopped by for kebab. I thought I had heard it all but he shot another missile by saying "Sweet-sweet, talked to me naa. What has I done wrong?"
I couldn't get angry, neither could I laugh. In fact, I reflected deeply on the situation and tried to absolve him from blame. I placed the blame on his teachers (assuming he is educated), as well as the bad educational standards in Nigeria.
Later on, I started thinking and came to the realisation that almost all Nigerian men, whether educated or not, woo girls in "Queens English". It is rare to see a Nigerian man woo a lady in Pidgin or in any of the local languages. This is true, at least, in my experience and based on what I have observed so far. Although I must acknowledge that there are a few exceptions. So my question then is this: what is actually wrong in wooing a lady in the language you are most comfortable with, especially those who speak English only as a second language?
I couldn't come up with a clear answer because even in cities, towns and villages where everyone speaks the same language, you observe this trend as well. So there is no justification on the grounds of communication. What then could be the reason behind this recourse to English when wooing ladies? Is it just a standard? If it is, who started it? Why do those who are not competent in the English language try to force themselves to speak it when wooing ladies? Even ladies that are not competent in English force themselves to speak it, just to appear modern and acceptable. What happened to our native Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Urhobo/Isoko, Pidgin, Efik, etc, when communicating with those of the opposite gender that we develop romantic proclivities for?
I need some responses to further enlighten me on this issue. Let us all discuss.

Politics › Re: How SGF, Babachir Lawal Was Suspended Inside Osinbajo’s Office by ozimec(m): 6:43pm On Apr 19, 2017 |
DONSMITH123: Fresh facts have emerged regarding the suspension of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal.
Lawal was meeting with the Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo, in his office, when the Presidency suspended him.
There are speculations that the embattled SGF, was being advised about the decision and told not to take it personal with President Muhammadu Buhari.
It is understood that Lawal was reportedly suspended, because Buhari is perceived to be losing his fight against corruption, with some of his key appointees facing allegations from several quarters.
Osinbajo also told him pointedly that the outcome of the investigation will determine his fate.
Recall that statement signed by Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina and made available to DAILY POST had announced the suspension of the SGF.
The statement reads: “President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered an investigation into the allegations of violations of law and due process made against the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr David Babachir Lawal, in the award of contracts under the Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE).
“The President has also directed the suspension of the SGF from office pending the outcome of the investigations.
“In a related development, the President has ordered a full scale investigation into the discovery of large amounts of foreign and local currencies by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a residential apartment at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos, over which the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) has made a claim.
“The investigation is also to enquire into the circumstances in which the NIA came into possession of the funds, how and by whose or which authority the funds were made available to the NIA, and to establish whether or not there has been a breach of the law or security procedure in obtaining custody and use of the funds.
“The President has also directed the suspension of the Director General of the NIA, Ambassador Ayo Oke, pending the outcome of the investigation.
“A three-man Committee comprising the Hon. Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and the National Security Adviser, headed by the Vice President, is to conduct both investigations.
“The Committee is to submit its report to the President within 14 days.
“The most senior Permanent Secretary in the SGF’s office, and the most senior officer in the NIA, are to act, respectively, during the period of investigation.”
Last month, Lawal insisted he was innocent of the allegations leveled against him over the N1.3billion grass-cutting contract .

Education › Re: 10 Common Words Nigerians Use Everyday That Don't Exist by ozimec(m): 10:14am On Apr 19, 2017 |
ngoremeka: Many people speak English as their first language. It is one of the most commonly spoken languages in the world. Nigerians are very good at a number of things and one of them is inventing their own version of English which has become popular overtime. Some of the words and phrases we use often cannot be found in the dictionary. Some are words you picked up from others and they have become quite a norm. It is not only the uneducated folks that are guilty of using these wrong words as the very educated Nigerians also use the English language inappropriately. Below are words Nigerians use that don’t exist in the English dictionary. 1. Go-slow: When Nigerians say go-slow, they mean congested traffic, which is wrong. The meaning of go-slow in the English dictionary is, a form of industrial action in which work or progress is deliberately delayed or slowed down. 2. Disvirgin: This word is used on a daily basis by many Nigerians when they intend to say a woman has lost her virginity. There is no word like disvirgin. The correct word to use is deflower. Disvirgin simply does not exist. 3. Trafficate: Nigerians use the word to describe a situation where a driver indicates to other drivers that he/she wants to take a turn. It is used so often, that it has started to sound like proper English. 4. Flashing: Every Nigerian knows “flashing” to mean when someone calls your mobile phone and cuts off before you answer. The word ‘flash’ is so common among Nigerians and its used at least once daily by many. Flash has different meanings but none has anything to do with a phone call. The word doesn’t exist in that sense in English. 5. Installmentally: Don’t be tempted to use the word ‘installmentally’. Though it sounds correct, it isn’t. There is no such word in the English dictionary as it exists only in the Nigerian edition of English language. The correct thing to say is ‘in installments’. 6. Opportuned: What exists in English dictionaries is ‘opportune,’ without ‘d’ at the end. Opportune means ‘timely’ or ‘well-time, especially convenient or appropriate for a particular action or event. Opportuned is only common in Nigerian English. 7. Cunny: This is a word which Nigerians use to describe someone that is being deceitful or crafty. The right word is cunning not cunny. 8. Next tomorrow: Most Nigerians generally use “next tomorrow” but there is not such word as next tomorrow. Instead you should say, “a day after tomorrow." 9. Packer: Nigerians probably got the word from pack. The right word is dustpan. Since dustpan packs dirt, Nigerians like to call it packer. 10. Pepperish: It is common to hear Nigerians describe a meal that has too much pepper in it as pepperish. The proper word should be ‘peppery’. No native English speaker uses the word pepperish” to describe the burning sensation we feel from eating pepper. Which of these words are you guilty of? Not too late to learn something new,I learnt too.. you can add other mistakes below Op, English is a language o and is copious.

Just show us where SR or the exam officer asserted that he graduated.
The so called latest you referred to says the exam officer WILL say he graduated, not he graduated.
There is a difference between WILL say and actually and officially saying something.
SR's tweet, the same tweet you are confusing yourself with says according to the exam officer who will say he graduated. The tweet, SR and the exam officer did not say he graduated. GET IT?
So far, the exam officer have not said anything to why are you people confusing yourselves just because you can not read and comprehend?

freeze001: Unfortunately he still has d lazy, socialist mentality and expects allocation from the central federal government.
What is that crap? Where will d FG draw d funds to share as allocation from? Is it not from d regions? Why should a group of people commandeer resources not theirs and redistribute by whatever sharing formula? The regions should be self reliant and then contribute to the centre an agreed percentage. Thank you my dear for that brilliant observation. The reverse should have been the case. I don't know why a region should be afraid of survival without other regions resources. This is total display of laziness..God has blessed every region with both human and natural resources to stand and survive alone like every individual is meant to survive with or without another. |
Properties › Re: COREN Raises Alarm Over Owerri Flyover by ozimec(m): 2:12pm On Mar 17, 2017 |
johnreh: The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has raised concern over the integrity of an intersection bridge otherwise called flyover being constructed by the administration of Governor Rochas Okorocha at Amawire, Akwakuma in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
Briefing newsmen on the outcome of the council’s first quarterly meeting for 2017, President and Chairman of the council, Mr. Kashim Ali disclosed that a letter had been written to the governor requesting him to provide details of the consultants and contractors handling the project so that they can furnish the body with some necessary information.
Ali warned that the council would not hesitate to invite the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), to storm the project site and arrest anybody seen there, if the government failed to comply.
“We got a disturbing report from Imo State on a bridge on Amawire, Okigwe Road and Akwakuma flyover. Our Engineering regulatory monitoring team noticed defects; they requested from the government the details of the consultants and contractors involved especially the engineers so we can know what went wrong.”
“The state government has not given us that information; we have written to the governor for them to give us the details urgently; to know the engineers involved to prevent what will cost lives. If they don’t do that, we have no option but to report the matter under our Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) conditions to ICPC and they would find whoever it is and get information they need.”
The council also deliberated on the report of alleged professional misconduct against a Professor of Agriculture and Environmental Engineering, from the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Simon Irtwange and referred the case to an investigating panel to determine whether the actions constituted ethical misconduct.
COREN President said the professor would be tried by the tribunal if any case was established against him
SOURCE: http://sunnewsonline.com/coren-raises-the-alarm-over-owerri-flyover/ I thank God for this timely intervention of COREN because, it won't be long when that death trap called flyover which is being set up by one of these unqualified contractors and their dubious paymaster will cause havoc. |

Even installation of governor's toilet is awarded to foreigners. When will we stop disenfranchising our brothers from the fruit of our fatherland?
