Roland17: My brother, that issue is peripheral, more than 60% of violent crimes, Murder/ homicides, shootings, robbery, rape are gang related carried out by juveniles, Chicago's crime rate has tripled compared to that of New York and twice as violent compared to LA.

Violent crimes have become a norm in Chicago especially south of Chicago, the police is massively corrupt, they know these gang leaders but have refused to tackle them, i am privileged to travel a lot and Brooklyn New York is a place i spend a lot of time.

Previously, Brooklyn was renowned for what Chicago currently suffers, but former Mayor Giuliani in conjunction with NYPD chiefs started a huge crack down on gang leader, threw them in jail and left them there, the Man haunt was massive sweeping through Brooklyn and Queens, made unannounced search in high schools, collaborated with school principals, this strategy greatly reduced the level of violent crimes in New York, today brooklyn has changed, its a new Brooklyn..although not perfect security wise, its safer than most big cities.

Chicago needs a sweep..

spyder880: I am a concerned Enugu citizen from a distant LG, not Chime's younger brother. I voted for Chime in the elections that brought him to power, and he has not disappointed us thus far. (Popular opinion on the streets of Enugu also)

As a citizen of Enugu state, I am not supposed to initiate an inquiry over the governors absence except I have sufficient grounds to believe he acted against the laws of the land. I am still listening to hear what any govt. Official will say against this, the speaker, or any member of our house of assembly has not come out to complain abaout this situation. The acting governor, Sunday Onyebuchi or Mrs Nwobodo (chief of staff, who sometimes reperesent the governor on public outings) has not said anything in the negative. The commissioners has still not complained about Chime's absence or their inability to perform their functions owing to one dysfunctional situation arising from the governors absence. Almost everything Chime is supposed to do is being done, and we the citizen cannot even complain of a pot hole in Enugu, or even a traffic jam!

Work is going on to put a second, wider bridge at Ziks avenue Enugu, another bridge at New haven junction area and the new state secretariat + the Akwata by pass. We the citizens, first feel grateful, and our gratitude has not allowed us to remember the governors absence, yet. grin

If my representative in govt, my assembly member is not complaining, why should I? I believe that the assembly members would have started making noise if there are sufficient grounds to do so.

Will be back.

Dudu_Negro: you would think, given the periodic incursion of fulani into farmlands in the. west and the the bloody aftermath, that yorubas would have this grazing rights proposal as a red flag on the public airwaves, with instructions on how to vote to defeat the bill. nollywood, owambe and other trivials have our attention at moment. meanwhile when the bill passes into law it will be too late to undo and we will start cussing northerner and label them backward and uneducated. we need a redefinition for who is educated in nigeria and who is not.

personally, hisblud, i think you took the right action by voting NO. better to err on the side of due dilligence and vote NO than to follow their confused instruction and abstain in default.

i searched for the proper guideline and could not find any. NASS is deliberately in a scam to cause confusion and thereby rig the bill through.

Sam Milla: I can give you people one secret why Enugu is moving forward so fast.

In 2011, Sullivan asked that my town IHE produce one person to be a commissioner of Agric.
The town rallied at the Market square and nominated a man who lived all his adult life in USA. When his name was given to the governor, he rejected it, Instead he appointed another man from our town Prof Martin Anikwe, a HOD in Esut and a professor of soil science to head the ministry. He explained to us that Prof Anikwe, despite being in the Agric field, lived all his life in Enugu and knows what the people need.
Now you know.

The Enugu state govt in partnership with O,san Carlos coy from Mexico are building the biggest Pineapple manufacturing company in an area of land estimated to be about 6000 hactres of land owned by about 7 communities from 3 LGAs.

The people will be cultivating the pineapple and be selling to the company to manufacture juice.

Talk of employment. I love Enugu.

Now you wonder why everybody is almost reluctant to remove a sick gov who has been away for long

.... And A certain Mr Peter Obi is busy attracting beer company to his state in the name of development.
6000 hectares!!! This is huge and ofcourse wonderful.

Please do you know the L.G.A or rather the communities involved in dis project? Also will the government lease the lands to the public to plant and harvest the pineapples? If so, what are the criteria? Thanks

Nedu31: The deputy senate president-Ike Ekweremadu is behind these unhealthy politics going on in Enugu state.Reasons as follow.PDP has a rotational govt within d state.Nkanu pple has already cut their own cake under Chimaroke administration for good 8yrs,now is Udi turn, after Udi it will shift to Nsuka zone. The problem now is that gov chime who is representin Udi have a deputy from Nkanu and if anything happens to chime-death,impeachment the Nkanu pple will take over d govt and they will do every possible means to retain the govt come 2015.In other hand the Nsuka pple are fightin for the survival of gov chime so that he will easily hand the power to them. And the person championin the whole affair is the Deputy senate president who happen to be the qualified candidate(politically)from the zone to emerge as gov of Enugu come 2015.He(deputy senate president)is doing everything possible to retain the status quo.
Point of correction sir, Ekweremadu is from d same senatorial zone as Gov Sullivan. However, we shouldn't pray/allow Ekweremadu to be our Gov. I'm ready to bet that Ike will take us back 10years. What I see in that man is that he's "too over ambitious" and wants to be the "Olusola Saraki" (RIP) of Enugu State.

Also, we shouldn't allow any die hard Ebeano ally to take over as its being alleged that onyebuchi is an Ebeano loyalist and this scares any well meaning Enugu person. Chimaroke and his cronies leading us will take us 100yrs backward.

I sincerely pray for the quick recovery of Gov Chime. May God heal him

berem: instead of the state lawmakers to follow due process and impeach the ailing governor, they left the state at the mercy of assasins and kidnappers terrorizing the state.am so ashamed this is happening in Enugu State.smh.....
Nne Enugu is not that bad. The assasinations being reported are not as a result of Sullivans disappearance. Let's not forget that their was a frat war this december. Nne if Kidnappings were as bad as you stated, Enugu wouldn't have been filled up during last xmas and New year celebrations.

Basically, Enugu is not bad at all compared to what is happening in Imo and Anambra (with due respect)
PoliticsGovernor Chime In London Hospital With Heart Disease - SaharaReporters by Ozonna(op): 9:29pm On Jan 13, 2013
Governor Sullivan Chime, who has been missing from Enugu State since September 2012 when he applied accumulated leave that ought to have lasted only one and a half months, is battling heart disease in London’s Cromwell Hospital, sources have told SaharaReporters.

Despite efforts to ferry him home to quell public restlessness in the State, the condition of the governor, whose medical sojourn started in India, has remained dire.

The prolonged absence of the Governor has left the state under the complete control of his Chief of Staff, Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo. Deputy Governor Sunday Onyebuchi, who is a neophyte, is limited to monetary spending limit of not more than N500,000k at a time.

Before becoming governor, Mr. Chime was Enugu state's Attorney General in the government of now-indicted former Governor Chimaroke Nnamani. During Chimaroke's reign in the state and for eight years, several assassinations, including that of Victor Nwankwo, the business manager of the vocal activist Arthur Nwankwo, helped to chill public dissent.

Following the disappearance from public view of Governor Chime in 2012, several assassinations have also been experienced in the state. Emeka Agwu, a man described as vocal and fearless, was assassinated in December 2012. He hailed from Udi, the same local government area as the governor.

Other assassinations, including those of Ogbo Edoda and Ikeckucku Alagwu, a coordinator of MDG projects in two LGAs, have sent fear throughout the state and chilled notable voices. So far, there are no investigations into those murders.

Enugu indigenes are fearful about what lies ahead for the State, and many prominent church leaders who hail from the same area as the governor have gone silent. The state assembly is also in the pockets of the governor.

A few days ago, a pro-democracy association of Enugu State citizens which calls itself the Save Enugu Group, called on Acting Governor Onyebuchi to make a “categorical explanation” on the condition and whereabouts of Governor Chime.
The Acting Governor has yet to respond.

PoliticsRe: Nigeria's 'Wealth' Is Over-rated by Ozonna(m): 8:35pm On Jan 12, 2013
MAYOWAAK: The story of Nigeria is like that of a father who has 36 children. He takes the income of his wealthy children to a central port and distributes it among his 36 children. A good father will encourage all his children to be creative and hardworking so that they can make the money to sustain themselves. A bad father will ignore the larger picture of every child being self-sustaining and insist on redistributing his children’s wealth. The ultimate danger is that you will have children who are extremely lazy and unwilling make good use of their talents and gifts. Every month, they will go to “papa” to give them their own share of the other children’s wealth. It will now reach a stage that they will start complaining that the money is not enough to buy the limousine of their dream.

I understand a bit of the logic of natural resources. The oil in the Niger Delta is a gift of nature, many will argue, since the people played no role in putting it under the ground. So let’s share it—it belongs to all. But so also can we say of human beings—we are not gifted the same way! Michael Jackson could sing better than his brothers and sisters. But it would be wrong to compel Michael to bring his income to the table so that his father could share it among all the Jacksons. If that were the case, Janet or Jermaine or LaToya would have no reason to do any work at all. They would all be waiting for the month to end to collect their own FAAC. But Janet honed her skills and became a success in her own right as an artiste. She may not be anywhere near the success of Michael, but she is certainly a success. The Jacksons can have a common purse where they can contribute resources for the common cause of the family. There is nothing wrong with that. But to make a policy of taking from one Jackson to sustain another Jackson is illogical.

There is no state in Nigeria that cannot sustain itself if the governors understand the art and science of development. If it is natural resources, every state has them. If it is value-added agriculture, every state can become an industrial host. These are the things that can generate employment, generate economic activities, generate tax revenue and shore up the incomes of the states. The real challenge for the governors is: how can they use what they’ve got to get what they need? How can they put the right policies in place to attract the needed investment? How do they spend wisely to make state economies viable? These are the questions they should be asking. But because of the ease of travelling to Abuja for federal allocation cheques every month, forward planning and critical thinking are no longer part of governance.

The eternal reliance on oil revenue has done a lot of damage to the federation. Every day now, we hear the Niger Delta people say “our oil, our oil”. During the petrol price hike crisis last year January, some Niger Delta person, trying to suggest that the protests were unjustly aimed at President Goodluck Jonathan, said something like: “If our son is not good enough to be president of Nigeria, then our oil is not good enough for Nigeria.” This warped logic—which tends to paint oil as the solution to all human problems—defies the fact that the most advanced countries in the world do not rely on oil revenue. Even Norway, the poster boy of successful management of oil revenue, survives on tax. Their oil money is saved largely for the rainy day.

But do you blame us? Why do we need to stretch our brain to dream of building our own Microsoft and Apple when we can look up to Abuja for the flow of petrodollars every month? Why should Bauchi bother to tap its tourism potential? Why should Bayelsa dream of feeding Africa with its FADAMA rice when there is a fat FAAC cheque to be collected in Abuja monthly? Why should we quicken Ajaokuta so that the fourth biggest steel company in the world can begin to operate fully and spice up the economy? Why should Aba be developed into our own Taiwan or Japan? There is no such incentive. The only incentive I can see in Nigeria is federation account.

It wouldn’t even matter if we are utilising federal allocations to develop the most important resource at our disposal: the human capital. Oil is not the real deal, no matter how dominant it has become in our lives. It was human beings that designed cars and made petrol as important as it is today. Human beings are now designing cars that run on bio-fuels, electricity and solar energy. By the time the cars become popularly accepted, the demand for oil could drop. It may not happen in the next 50 years but it would happen someday. So the wise person does not keep emphasising on oil and ignoring human capital. The wise person thinks about a future where our lives will no longer depend on oil but on the quality of the brain. It was human beings that invented aeroplanes, computers and phones, etc. If we are wise now, our energies should be devoted to getting out of this oil trap.

I wish we could discuss these issues honestly without trading insult and threat. The quality of public debate is very poor in Nigeria. We have a real problem in our hands but instead of engaging in fruitful debates to chart the way forward, we specialise in name-calling and blackmail as if that would solve our problem. Those of us who have no interest in politics or politicking will continue to make our point.
This is nice
