Computers / April 2011 Report On Prices Of Internet Access In Nigeria by passyjango(m): 10:32pm On Apr 08, 2011
Like we stated in our last report, there were no price changes in cost of internet access in Nigeria in the fourth quarter of 2010. The same however cannot be said of the first quarter of 2011 as network operators introduced new internet packages and revamped others to remain competitive in the market place. Airtel and Etisalat were the most impressive in the quarter, introducing some very impressive internet bundles that will strengthen their positions in the market. Glo also introduced some new internet access bundles for high data users offering some of the best deals as far as internet access in Nigeria is concerned. Another interesting development in the quarter was that fierce competition between operators especially MTN and Glo has seen price of internet modems drop from N8,000 to N5,000 within this period. As usual most of the movements are led by GSM operators while their CDMA counterparts watch.

Cheap Internet Access

The biggest change in the cheap internet category was introduced by Airtel. The new Airtel Smartphone internet plan offers 30 day 24/7 internet access limited to 1GB for N3,000. Airtel Smartphone internet plan is now our pick for best deal for cheap internet browsing in Nigeria; knocking off Etisalat 500MB Internet browsing bundle from the top spot. The reason is simple Airtel Smartphone internet access plan offers 100% more data allowance as the Etisalat 500MB at the same price.

All GSM operators still offer a monthly internet access bundles priced at N1,000. While MTN, Airtel (former Zain), and Etisalat offer 100MB internet bundles at N1,000, Glo mobile is offering a 150MB internet bundle at N1,000 (50% more value than industry standard). For value for money, Glo 150MB is still our recommendation if your monthly internet access needs is below 300MB in 30 days, above 300MB, you should consider the Airtel 1GB and Etisalat 500MB internet access packages.

Read overview of cheap internet access plans in Nigeria.

High data, Value for money Internet Access

Etisalat and Airtel introduced some great internet access bundles during the quarter, joining the likes of Glo mobile, MTN, and MultiLinks to offer some of the best value internet bundles in Nigeria. Glo Always Max, a 6GB 30-day internet access bundle priced at N7,500 used to be the best value for money internet bundle in Nigeria with a score of N1.25/MB. But Glo set new records introducing three new internet access bundles with even better value. Glo Platinum with its offering of 20GB for N18,000 is now the best value internet access bundle with a score of N0.90/MB (90 kobo/MB). Glo Silver offering 10GB for N10,000 and Glo Gold offering 15GB for N15,000 both have a score of N1.00/MB. So Glo now has the four best deals for high data users. However, Glo 6GB (Always Max) is still our best pick for high data users, especially if you are under Glo 3.5G coverage area.

After the Glo top four comes the New Etisalat 6GB internet access bundle, which is priced at N8,000 (N1.33/MB). MultiLinks 6GB internet at a price of N9,900 and Airtel 10GB priced at N15,000 then follows both with a score of N1.50/MB. The new Airtel 5GB shares the next position with the MTN 5GB internet access plan. Both are priced at N8,000 with a score of N1.60/MB. Other internet access plans to consider, especially for mid-range users, are 3GB internet access packages from Airtel and Etisalat and 1.5GB internet access packages from Etisalat and Glo.

Read our overview of value for money internet access plans in Nigeria.

This report is aimed at providing all the information about internet access cost in Nigeria in one place so that consumers can make better choices. If you currently access internet at a cheaper cost or at a higher value for money, feel free to contact us about it so that we can add it during our next report. However, the internet access package must be legal. We are interested in 30-day internet packages only. It is our hope that recent launches of fibre optic cable landing by MainOne and Glo will begin to bring down prices as well as increase speed. It is also our hope that network operators will deploy high speed internet in other cities in Nigeria, rather than just limiting them to Lagos, Abuja, and PH. Our next report will be in July, 2011. Hope a lot would have changed by then. See you then.

I have experienced up to 800 kbps on MTN, though it does not happen all the time. At night MTN seems slower. A 15MB file takes less than 5 minutes on the average.

Nicklee:

I think you are being very ridiculous here. A fan did a user generated video for BB and posted on YouTube. It went viral and CPC decided to point to it on their facebook page and their website. Now that is the offense, right (although you and I know for truth that there is hardly anything offensive about this in this digital age). If Bluelab was legit, they would realized that this is an amazing marketing opportunity for them. Can you count how many poeple YouTube has made popular and subsequently richer? But Bluelab is a political organization.

They asked for the Ad (don't even want to call it an Ad but a fan generated content) to be removed and that was done. I know there are GEJ loyalists and you might be one of them, so can you explain how a professional organization like Bluelab will create a bizzare website with the name Buharistoleourideas.com? Few days to elections?

CPC did nothing wrong because they did not create or sponsor the video. All they did was to point to the video and for goodness sake Nigerians, lets stop acting like morons and backward people. Almost every website in the world at some point points to contents on YouTude. Go to CNN, go to huffington post, go to any website and see if they don't have atleast one video pointing to YouTube. If Bluelab had any issues, they should have reported to YouTube and the video would have been taken down from YouTube. That would have meant that every website pointing to that one video, including nairaland will cease to have access to the content. CPC did what EVERYONE in this current multimedia age dis doing,

Morons!!! That's what we are. Imagining Nigerians talking about content violation all of a sudden from a video that has been hosted on YouTube. Moronic thoughts again - no one is asking why the libelous website Buharistoleourideas.com. Nigerians will never cease to amaze me.

So people will know, one of the biggest advantages of YouTube is that it presents a platform for one's video to go viral and become a hit. Justin Beiber and Susan Boyle are classic examples. There are tons of people praying everyday that theirs go viral so they can exploit that for positive marketing. I'm sureBluelab has already received its own rewards from PDP, so no worries, let's kill this wonderful marketing opportunity. That is Nigeria for you, corrupt people, selfish and self-centered. All of us are (myself included).

Forget these people, do something more important with your life. No matter what you say they will still not agree. This is a mind game that they are playing. Remember Silence was, is, and will remain the best answer for fooooools.

TexMex:

CPC pulling the ad doesn't mean they shouldn't admit wrongdoing and pay restitution. It's just like when you mistakenly appropriate another man's money. You don't just return it. The courts will also ask you to pay interest on the funds for the period it was used. Messrs Bluelabs have the right to sell the rights to whoever they please, and I will even say it's bad business for them not to have sold it to CPC. But that's me.

Who is talking about restitution? For all we know these guys have already been paid for the job they have done so far. If they wanted redress, there was no need to open a smear website and claim that their idea was stolen. The aim is to discredit Buhari and nothing more. The way this case is going Bluelabs may end up paying Buhari damages, but by then the deed must have been done. I sincerely hope they collected enough money from whoever is giving them morale.

So these nincompoops of labalaba limited still do not get it?

You have no case against CPC. In fact, you are slapping yourself as a glorious inane person Mr. Femi Odewunmi.

Totally ridiculous!!!

Omo this is not about having a case. This is a desperate attempt to reduce the popularity of Buhari and to make Nigerians to question their belief that Bahari is a credible person. You see, Nigerians are a people that can easily be manipulated. They can reach conclusions without asking for facts, which is the weakness of Nigerians that this smear campaign aims at exploiting. However, so far I am glad that it has not worked on Nairaland and I hope it fails in the streets as well.

If they are serious about a case, do they need to buy a domain name (Buhari Stole Our Idea) for that? Do they even know that Buhari with a good lawyer can turn the case against them in court for not exhausting all available options before embarking on a smear campaign? The fact is that they are more interested in discrediting Buhari than in pursuing any case and am quite sure they are smiling to the bank by now.

Here is a response from the Buhari/Bakare Campaign

We consider it a privilege to document our thoughts on this distraction attempt by so called youths and their childish attempts at blackmail.

The logo of the CPC is a pen and a flag, it means the party is keen on knowledge, deeply patriotic and eager to re-write Nigeria’s history. We are amazed that digital youths can be so uninformed about the social media we have all come to taut ourselves as experts on.

There are a few documents on this that state actual facts about how this is a cheap blackmail attempt. Some of the documents will be held until further evidence is required.

1. We have documents showing the letters received by CPC officials from third party individuals, the date it got to CPC officials and required time for response. These documents show that we communicated with them within their time frame.

2. We have records of email from Femi Odewumi, MD of Bluelabs LLC indicating their intention to sell the “project” to CPC.

3. We have records of our phone conversations with the MD of Bluelabs LLC, Femi Odewumi where we requested a meeting to make available to him the facts about this case that they have not put into consideration. We also have a record of his return call indicating that his team is meeting in the afternoon and he will get back to us. All these conversations happened hours before launching their malicious website and Femi Odewunmi has not called back.

4. We have records of the the source of the YouTube video, an individual (a fan of the Buhari/Bakare 2011 Campaign) who made it and the various people who have uploaded other videos using the same soundtrack. This YouTube video was a user generated content offered to Buhari4Change Fanpage publicly on Facebook with permissions for use.

5. We have screen shots backing up every detail, some of which are already being adjusted by the people perpetrating this ill.
While neither CPC nor any of it’s officials own, designed or developed the YouTube video montage in question, please find below the terms and conditions of Youtube. This “Transformation soundtrack” has been used to create videos and uploaded to YouTube since, the Jan 30, 2011 (or earlier). YouTube’s Terms of Service about video uploaded to their website states:

by submitting Content to YouTube, you hereby grant YouTube a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the Content in connection with the Service and YouTube’s (and its successors’ and affiliates’) business, including without limitation for promoting and redistributing part or all of the Service (and derivative works thereof) in any media formats and through any media channels. You also hereby grant each user of the Service a non-exclusive license to access your Content through the Service, and to use, reproduce, distribute, display and perform such Content as permitted through the functionality of the Service and under these Terms of Service.

– Excerpts from YouTube Terms of Service.
If you feel strongly that the people who initially uploaded your music have violated your rights. There is a process with YouTube to notify them before it becomes viral.

It is a big shame, that opposition politicians can go to any length to corrupt the youth of a nation, at this time, when we are battling for the nations soul.

CPC and Buhari-Bakare have become a growing movement in Nigeria, social media and user generated content are an integral part of ensuring information dissemination beyond government controlled media. While CPC and General Buhari will not infringe on people’s intellectual property, WE WILL NOT SUCCUMB TO BLACKMAIL.

Omo, just because all your life you have been scammed by your leaders and probably girlfriends does not mean that you should go through life suspecting every story as scam one day you will miss a very good opportunity with this your mentality. Are you saying that it is impossible for a bride to rush to an aptitude test from a wedding reception on her wedding dress given the circumstances that has been highlighted here? So where is the scam coming from?

Yes the story may not be true, but until you can prove that beyond reasonable doubt, your response should be based on facts on the thread rather than speculation.

I hope that is not how you draw all the conclusions you draw on this forum? A normal human will try to get enough information before reaching a conclusion. This ensures that when you pass your judgment it will be fair and just and will not be upturned by new evidence. You need to read other posts especially posts from eye witnesses and experts to be sure you fully understand the circumstances before making comments. So there was no WEDDING. Please correct me if i am wrong.

It is ignorant people like you that I am actually talking about. Who told you there was no wedding? You just read a headline and base your post just on a headline. For the information of the house she got accredited before those that came much earlier  than she did. I bet you she is a smart girl. supposing she went home, changed into a new dress and drove down to the venue of the exams what would have been her excuse for coming late?
Politics / Re: Bride Abandons Wedding For Nnpc Test? (PIX) by passyjango(m): 1:42pm On Mar 28, 2011
There was nothing wrong with her actions. We Nigerians are just too judgmental, even with very little information we open our mouth and talk rubbish. How many of us have information on the circumstances surrounding her showing up at the test in a wedding dress or her character as a person or family background. Before removing the sand in your sister's eye first remove the mountain in your eye so that you can see clearly, because the sand you see in your sister's eye might just be a reflection of the mountain in your own eye.

I must also commend her husband for playing the role of a good husband, supporting her wife to achieve her own dreams. Some fooooool would have put the feelings of family, friends, and ignorant Nigerians above the happiness of his probably very loving and caring wife, who he will probably be spending the rest of his life with. You are a model to all men in Nigeria.

okooyinbo:

BTW, I would vote Ribadu if I could vote. Buhari did not try at all when he said Nigerians are all corrupt, and especially that the Nigerian education system is ok. If Nigerans are all corrupt, and he intend to fight corruption; is he going to arrest all Nigerians including innocent and honest people who in contrary  to Buhari can indeed still be found in Nigeria?

If Buhari said that most Nigerians are corrupt then he is in touch with the reality on the ground than anybody else. A lot of us are corrupt. A lot of people complaining about corruption (stealing of public funds) are only doing so because they are not benefiting from the existing system. How many relations and friends of governors, presidents, legislatures, top business men are complaining about corruption? To them things have never been better.

To those who claim they are not corrupt (stealing public funds), two questions for you. Have you ever been in public office? Have a friend or family member ever held any public office? If you say no to these questions then you may not have stolen public funds yet just because you do not have the opportunity to do so. Remember, to commit a crime you need an opportunity.

You may not have stolen public funds but corruption is not just about stealing public funds.

1) Have you ever bribed or helped a friend/family to bribe a university official for admission?
2) Have you ever bribed or helped a friend/family to bribe a JAMB official for admission?
3) Have you ever bribed or helped a friend/family to bribe an NYSC official for favourable posting?
4) Have you ever bribed anyone to improve your score in an examination?
5.) Are you currently supporting candidates in the election on the basis of tribe and religion alone, or benefits you are getting now or will get if he wins?
6.) Have you ever paid bribe to get out from police problem?
7.) Are you using free internet cheats for your browsing?
8.) Have you ever offered an illegal incentive to anyone to get something you would not have gotten without such incentive (like job, contract, etc)?
9) Would you have done any of the above if the opportunity presented itself?

If you can from your hearts of hearts say no to these questions and more that I may not have listed, then you may be one of a minority of Nigerians who can say their hands are clean. Corruption is about knowing what is right to do, but choosing to do the wrong thing because it is easier or more convenient. If you have ever compromised, then it is in you. One thing about compromising is that if you have done it once, you are more likely to do it again. This is why men that seem okay, appear corrupt when given public office. The fact is that they were corrupt before they took public office, but they never had the opportunity to steal public funds. So when they got public office that aspect of their corrupt tendencies begin to manifest.

Buhari must be smarter than I thought to know this and I will respect him for that. This might also mean that he may be in the best position to stop corruption in Nigeria.

You cannot fight corruption by locking up everybody. People do corrupt things because they know they can get away with it. All you need to do to reduce corruption is to introduce consequence which will make people think twice before doing the wrong things. Nigerians are corrupt, yet when they go abroad they do not appear corrupt. Why? Because they know that if they are caught they will face the music. So, you will not need to lockup everybody. Just lockup the first 10 and 95% will conform to the new order. Consequence is the key to fighting corruption.

I agree but how do you know whether a leader would be sincere before he gets elected. Even if you do, of what use is sincerity without a plan or purpose.Or do we need a leader that is sincerely unfocused and inept?
I also agree that time is of the essence but is that not the more reason why we need to focus on the plans and programmes before the election so that the “action” can commence immediately whoever wins gets in. Truth is, no matter how urgent a journey is, if you have no plan but just decide to it the ground running, you would eventually become grounded!

I am not against planning my intention is to point out that no matter how great a plan is you need sincerity to implement it. Do you know many committees have been setup in this country in the past 30 years? Do you know the volume of reports generated by these committees? Do you know how many trees that met their untimely death just for the reports to be published? Do you know how many man hours wasted by members of such committees? Do you know how much was wasted on these committees? Do you know the agony Nigerians faced hoping that one programme or the other will mark the end of their sufferings only for such hopes to be dashed?

What we need are sincere leaders who are not pretending to be planning just to buy time before they disclose their next grand excuse, but leaders who when they plan are doing so to make a difference. Any sincere leader can run Nigeria successfully with existing plans and programs with little amendments here and there. Even the devil can come up with a grand plan to deceive people. It is the sincerity of purpose that counts.

What we need is a leader that has a coherent plan on how to accelerate economic growth in the country. As we prepare to vote, let that be the overaching criteria for selecting candidates.

What we need are leaders who are sincere. We have been planning for too long, we need action people. Not people that will create a committee to find out the remote and immediate course of our electoral problems and give them one year to present their report only to leave the report to be gathering dust. We need people who know that time is of essence and will hit the ground running.

The guy is a 'coconut head', but unlike his wife he has some shame and would not want to embarrass himself in public again. He has already made his condition for attending debates known (EXPO) and for an intellectually-challenged person, that is a legitimate demand. So let us just allow the guy have some peace in the little time he has left or you meet his demand so that he would attend.

On a more important note, I will like to know if a hashtag has been chosen for the tweets on the day? If so, what is it?

She probably got adult education, the type that they use their salary to bribe their way through school. I believe that was also the case for her husband.

The fact that she has a degree is a surprise to me because based on her level of articulation; I would have classified her as a junior secondary school dropout. The problem with the First lady is not just that she cannot speak English, but that she does not reason at the level of an educated person. She does not make sense in any language.  The first time I heard her read I thought she was teaching in a nursery school, because of the way she reads like she is reciting a poem. That was before the campaign, my fellow widows, and the Umbrella.

Her low IQ became apparent when during the campaign she started speaking from her head without prepared speeches. Because, the head was almost empty the only words that were coming were Umbrella, Shildrens, my fellow widows, and other little snippets of information in her brain. The fact that she has not been able to improve on her English and reasoning capacity over the years simply shows that she is intellectually challenged.

So, how many TV stations do we have in Nigeria? If everyone of them "organize" a presidential debate, do you expect any reasonable candidate to attend every one of them?

NN24 is not just any TV station. It is Nigeria's first truly 24 hours news channel. Let’s face it over a 100,000 viewers would have watched the debate live with many more to watch clips on Youtube and relay by other broadcasters. Even if only a 100,000 watched it, it is still a large enough platform, after all how many people attend those rallies that they spend millions to organise. The debate was free, just come and share your intellect. So, my friends GEJ has no excuse. He is only intellectually challenged.

It is only a ‘coconut head’ that shy away from examinations. An egg head will always be looking forward to take an exam as it affords him the opportunity to show off his smartness.

Winners are competitive; they always look for opportunity to compete with others, because at the end of the day winners know that you cannot win unless you compete. Losers look for excuses to avoid competition. GEJ is a loser, who will keep providing excuses on why things will remain the same in Nigeria. We cannot afford to wait another four years.

You got it wrong; corruption is a by-product of a society that has gotten its values wrong. Like I said before the problem is not in the systems we have. Although they are not perfect (and non is) they can still get the job done given a better society. Take our education system to America or Japan and it will still run better than it does here. We need to clean up the society. Our problem is insincerity; we pay lip service to our development. We claim we want change but on Election Day we vote on sentiments: North or South, Not born rich or born rich, Christians or Muslims.

How can you say a system is bad when you have not implemented it sincerely and have consistently starved it of funds?

Here is a simple analogy, assuming your TV could not turn on during a low voltage situation. Do you then assume that the system (the TV) is bad and buy a new one? Even if you buy a new TV, at very low voltage the new system (new TV) will still not work, leading to waste of time and money. To conclude that your TV is bad, you have to first provide it with adequate power via your generator or connect it through a powerful AVR. Until the TV is supplied with rated voltage and it still does not turn on, only then will it be reasonable to conclude that the system (the TV) is bad.

We cannot assume that our Education system is wrong until we have fully implemented it sincerely and wholeheartedly. Only then can we objectively analyse the problems of the system.
Politics / Re: Nothing Is Wrong With The Nigerian Education System - Buhari by passyjango(m): 12:21pm On Mar 19, 2011
At least, the man showed up for the debate. That makes him better than cowards shying away from debates. Some were looking for EXPO, but Buhari was confident enough to show up without Expo and he did well. If all Nigerian students will emulate Buhari, Ribadu, and Shekarau and enter into exams with confidence and without Expo whatever problem we have with education in Nigeria will be 50% solved.

There are problems in education in Nigeria, but those problems are only side-effects of our societal problems. The system we have, though not perfect would be okay if the society was better. The problem with education in Nigeria is the disdain that Nigerians have for knowledge and learning. People are reconised not on what they know but by how much they have. This has reduced interest in knowledge and learning in Nigeria. These days people go to school to acquire certificates. Parents pay to get good grades for students. Teachers now help student to pass exams. Teaching jobs are indiginised leaving our children at the mercy of area boys and babes. Money meant for infrastructure in the Education sector ends up in private pockets.

These are not problems with the system, these are more of societal problems which must be addressed and the surest way to address them is to make sure that the only way to achieve success in Nigeria is through hard work and honest living. Until that happens whatever system you have 6-3-3-4, 9-3-4, 3-3-3-3, 6-6-6, British system, American system, Chinese system, Indian system will all fail.

Fix the society and the systems will flourish.
Politics / Re: Fg To Dialogue With Mend Over Threat Of Bomb Attacks by passyjango(m): 12:50pm On Mar 17, 2011
I thought they said MEND no longer exists. So, which MEND are they talking about? Or are they acknowledging what most Nigerians, except for the foooolish ones already know. Which is that GEJ lied on October 1, 2010. That he abused his office and used a serious national security issue as a bomb blast to play politics.
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Dstv To Increase Their Subscription Fee! by passyjango(m): 10:51pm On Mar 15, 2011
DSTV is simply the best. They offer the best quality programming. I heard people talking about HiTV and StarTimes. Is that a joke or what? If these services were free I would still prefer to pay for DSTV.

As for people complaining about this price increase, let us be objective. Compare rate of increase of DSTV subscription over 10 years to how the price of petrol, diesel or even Garri has increased and you will discover that DSTV is trying.
