Mass anarchy? Buddy, thats not within the ambit of this conversation.

That's the thing from Kosovo, all those numbers are disputed. However i was specifically referring to the 78 days offensive. The results from that air campaign was abysmal. It calls into question how the US fights, against a worthy opponent, the concept of air superiority falls flat on it's face.

The Americans can build a long term modern armies, but can those armies fight. I agree that the JSDF did not exist after WWII, however Pre-World War II Japan was a world power, so the potential was always there. Can the South-Koreans fight? They have 30kl americans as insurance. The Iraqis sure can't, Philippines.. NO. I think because they cannot apply the concept of air superiority which is the focal point of American combat, i fail to see how those nations would be successful. The Colombians have always being good fighters. It is hard to Judge Kenya, the Mall fiasco was quite embarrassing.

In my Opinion, the West does not provide the sort of training that guarantees security in Africa.

Nigerian navy NNS Unity in Sri-Lanka
Well, the Air campaign did allow the Americans to meet their ground objectives in the region. And it would be silly to question their air effectiveness when you look at what they did in Iraq.

The American force in Korea is a "trip-wire" formation, its there so that in the event of Northern aggression the Americans can go to war immediately, circumventing congressional approval and other diplomatic formalities. A short-cut if you will. As for the Koreans, yes then can very definitely fight - if you are interested you should look up their exploits in Vietnam, they were probably the most effective forces in the region, probably on par with the Aussies.

Phillipeans is a sh1tshow of a country, I have been there, its more of a reflection of their own incompetance rather than that of the Americans. As for the Columbians, they have been fighting FARC for 50 years, they only turned the tide once uncle sam weighed in with training and support.

Kenyans, well the Mall was a disaster, but I think such situations would be a disaster for anyone. Even if such an attack happened in America, you would see a simular death toll. On the other hand, look at their effectiveness in Somalia, some minor set-backs but between them and the Ugandans the tide of the war has definitly turned.

1. He is a pseudo-dictator
2. He is funding genocidal militants who are destabilising the DRC
3. He has sent his goons across Africa and the world to assasinate and intimidate opponents.
4. His regime is extremely authoritarian, has a long record of detentions, abuses etc of citizens.

Zuma is allot of things, I am counting down the days until his term ends, but in the end of the day he has a strong human rights record (mainly because he is too incompetent to do otherwise) and is not destabilizing the region.

OFF-TOPIC

"The joys of being a superpower", but can they fight like that against a credible enemy with a credible air defence and electronic warfare capability?

I don't think the US "know how to fight", yes, the world brush poor little countries and make multiple H.D. However when pitted against a somewhat credible foe, balances rapidly change. I mean, take Serbia as an example 78 days of non-stop US/NATO airstrikes, 1000+ aircraft and 38,000+ air sorties and all that to achieve what?

10 or so Serbian aircraft destroyed (most on the ground), 20+ APC and tanks destroyed and 1000+ Serbian soldiers dead or wounded. That is out of a force of 130’000+ Serbian soldiers, 80+ aircraft, 1,400 artillery pieces, 1’270 tanks and 825 APCs (all figures according to Wikipedia). The 3rd Serbian Army Corps basically came out unharmed from this massive bombing campaign which will go down in history as arguably the worst defeat of airpower in history!

When you transfer that sort of training to Africa, you'll see why African troops trained solely by the US never does well in battle.

I also noticed with the MATV, they sell a lot of units, those vehicles are expensive and battle after battle those vehicles always seem to perform badly. Look at Saudi MATVs in Yemen.
That's because it was a largely strategic and not tactical iperation, they still got:
121 aircraft
93-120 tanks
150-220 APCs
339 other vehicles
389-450 field guns

As for American training, they have proven that their long term "Army Building" operations work while they maintain oversight (S. Korea, ARVN, JDF etc) problem is that they dont accoubt for the fact that small nations cannot operate formations like the US do.

As for small unit training, they have been extremely successful in Colombia and Kenya.

Other nations are better, IMO the British and French are better because of their long colonial experience, but the Americans can work.

Another consideration is that the only unit that is "trained to train" are their Green Berets and Delta.

For US training to work you need to set up extremely long term training operations

The last time Aradu actively sailed was in 2011. There are photos of the Aradu sailing in 2011 right here in this very thread. Look at the first 2 pages of this very thread. It has since then been docked. That's 5years ago, is that a decade to you?

Your ignorance, would have been so hilarious, if it wasn't this plain pitiable.

A significant invest in the Aradu would put her in a condition which is as good as new. For a battleship as good as the Aradu, a vessel that still has 30 years of life in her, i see no reason why an investment in the Aradu won't be a perfect idea.

Dude stop displaying gross ignorance. The comments we have made on the Aradu have been purely speculative. Nigerian defence procurements have always been on a need basis. Over the past 3years, the Nigerian navy has procured 5 Offshore Patrol Vessels, 13 Midshore Patrol Vessels, hundreds of Inshore Patrol Crafts and 4 Bell helicopters. This is a procurement that is based on a requirement.

If money is to be spent on the Aradu, it won't be based on any National pride. It is simply a required investment that would put a darn good, a brilliant battleship back to sea. What i've proposed is to put the Aradu back to sea, while 2 Corvettes are bought to compliment her.
floating around in port is not "put to sea". She hasnt been operational in decades. This is a fact, we all know it.

Reffiting a vessel like Aradu is pointless expenditure, we all know her service record, she is battered and bruised. Her weapons systems are obsolete, her missiles likely expired.

Using the 70:30 paradigm of naval aquisitions (70% of cost on weapons/systems, 30% on hull) you may as well buy a new vessel. Considering the state of her systems.

Also, I wish to hold you to your own standards:

Henry240:

What a load of rubbish.
So you think it is a worth while endeavor to pump millions into a 26 year old ship, that hasnt put to sea in allmost a decade, has missiles which are likely expired, underwent a refit of dubious quality - who knows which systems still date back to the 1980's - , has been crashed multiple times and was designed with conventional surface warfare in mind?

What happened to the old, "we buy what we need based on our threats" argument you used to rattle out?

There are better things to spend money on than a beat up ship, and no, national pride is not a valid expense. You said yourself, the cost of ressurection is in the ballpark of a new corvette... which would you rather have?

Let me clear this one.

I shared that particular photo back in 2013 when Nigerian forces first deployed to Mali. That's not rust, what you're seeing in that photo is an effect of a sandstorm. You can see the soldiers hand and mask, brown in dust, and he has his goggles on.

......Because of the proximity of the AO to the Sahara desert, it sits right on the desert. There are usually very frequent sandstorms. Soldiers had to wear Goggles and balaclava to operate.

Photo related Nigerian soldier in Mali; Nigerians came kitted this way as an operational requirement.

personally i think it'll get scrapped or postponed, they are not willing to embark on the mili-million dollar project to revive her.
That ship is a mess at this point. Multiple collissions, multiple re-fits, years on the quay side, etc etc etc. Money would be better spent on another corvette. Or saved for upgrades for existing vessels.

Best to sail her out to sea and let your other vessels use her for gunnery practice.

Gripens, JF17 thunder and Tejas are all light multi-role fighters with similar capabilities. The only difference is that Tejas and Jf17 thunder are still under development and when completed, they will be competing with Gripen E/F not Gripen C/D.

The existing versions are already comparable to Gripen C/D.
1. "Light multi-role" is a class you just made up

2. Gripen is swing role

3. Gripen is superior in every single way, how is a thing that is better comparable?

No, they are not a match for the c/D and no there is nothing in the development schedule to suggest it will compare to the E/F

The fatal flaw of your argument is that you say it is too expensive, yet people keep buying it (80) despite the existence of your "cheaper and just as good" JF-17

This is a childish argument, why are certain people obsessed with comparing two fighters that will never combat each other?

The MK1A well surpasses the Gripen. I wonder how the Pakistanis would respond.

The Gripen is just a pampered plane that should ordinarily not cost more than half it's current value. I was reading the RAND report on Gripen operations in Libya as against those conducted by F-16s, F-15s and Tornados, i couldn't phantom what the hullabola about the plane is. Granted it carried out 30% of all ISR mission, but that was the job of the RECON pod it carried, not the plane itself. A western plane which was having compatibility issues with other western planes.
