Million Dollar Question – If Nairaland Is Nigeria’s Tumblr, Why Hasn’t It Been Acquired Yet?

The internet has seen some big acquistions. YouTube. Instagram. Tumblr is hot shit right now because Yahoo! just dropped 1.1 Billion cool ones for it.


What do all these platforms have in common. They are crazy UGC (user generated content) machines — websites that people habitually submit content to. In Yahoo!’s official release, Tumblr was said to have see 900 posts per second, and 24 billion minutes spent onsite each month. By the time you’re done reading this post, there’ll be more than 162,000 new posts on Tumblr. Evidently, if you can crack UGC, you’re likely to get a payday eventually.

While nowhere close to those amazing numbers, the only UGC platform that seems to be doing anything similar in Nigeria…Africa even…is Seun Osewa’s Nairaland. Last we heard, the site was doing 12 million pageviews a month, and if Alexa is your thing, we know that Nairaland is the most visited African website.

So why hasn’t anyone tried to acquire Nairaland yet? From what I’ve heard, it isn’t for lack of trying. And not with meagre sums either. A million dollars from MIH to get their mits on Nairalist data. Google overtures, spurned. There’s lots of speculation, lore and legend around failed Nairaland/Nairalist sale talks, and the reason why Seun doesn’t sell.

If you know any stories, pray tell.

It’s not like selling is the only logical destination for Nairaland, so that’s not the issue. It’s just that there doesn’t seem to be a long term agenda for the platform. None that is obvious at least.

The other day someone was lamenting to me about how Seun is basically being a weist where Nairaland is concerned, and not even scratching the surface of its potential — which to him means selling the platform, or the data at least. He was so angry, I thought I was Seun for a minute. The irony wasn’t lost on me. Users elsewhere will thank you for giving them a free service, not mining their data and most importantly, not selling out. But here was someone who was actually angry that his data was being “locked up” on Nairaland, and not being exploited like it rightfully should. Wonders.

Everyone knows that Nairaland could be more than it is right now. People just can’t say how. They just say stuff like “it could look better”, “there could be an API”, “he could spin a hundred different services off it”…

Yada, yada. Seun doesn’t care. Not about selling, and certainly not about extending the site in any way. Did you say API? That’s taboo where Nairaland is concerned. Pystar tried to make an unofficial one and got banned for his trouble.

So what does Seun plan to do with Nairaland eventually…asides from herding disgruntled webmasters and pawning advertising pixels, that is?

Maybe someday, he’ll share. Maybe today, if he reads this.

for this thread to be really credible, pple should not just state how much they are making, they need to give a brief description of what they do (and not just the job title), their skillset, and training/education/certification/experience, and maybe the description of clientele/employers' businesses

do not really know this man, his antecedents and the battles he is fighting now. one thing i know though is that, any man who is heading a sensitive position as head of frcn should not use generalized 'hate-like' words towards any ethnic group in the country.

imo, john and love both know what they were doing when they did it. the know right from time that their church's stance on make-ups, clothes etc is no longer tenable in todays world and their wedding granted them the opportunity to make the statement. i d think they are aware that they are going to be punished for what they were doing but decided to be scape goats all the same in order to pave the way and give other pple who share their opinion but are fearful a voice and a reason to be bold. i think they pretty much achieved that.

i think 2 different issues are being mixed up here - faking an accent and learning a new accent (and maybe, a new diction) to make yourself more understandable to some set of people.
one simple difference between the two is that, the former is based on assumption of the accent of a set of people based on movies you have seen, while the later is acquired by interacting with the set of pple using the accent

imo, this sounds like a positive step taken in the negative direction. in these days of climate change, i think a safer cleaner way should have been used to dispose of the diesel while making sure that the owners of the illegal refinery pay for any expenses incurred in the process of doing that.

hmm, i think the so-called new rule has been existing in germany (with some variation) for some years now.
i think the rule will hurt the brits (wrt income from visitors/tourists) as much as it hurts genuine visitors with no such bond money. However, as much as the bond money does not leave the visitors country(in our case, nigeria) for the british econonmy, i will consider it fair.

rather unfortunate there is no unlike button. i dont know how old you are, but i am sure that when you will know more about the duties and responsibilities of parents as you approach that stage of your life. By the way, don't get me wrong- i am not saying he should use his "power/connection" to force/persuade pple to give his daughters the jobs they are either not qualified for or jobs where there are more qualified candidates.

I kind of disagree with you on calling him irresponsible because he is trying to get job for his children. On the contrary, responsible parents will always assist their children in their job search by the way of speaking to friends and advising their kids. I still remember the troubles my parents had to go through in trying to search for a job for me (although they were not sucessful in the search but, anyways, i found my own job). A parents responsibility to their children doesnt stop at graduation.
And why would you call the children irresponsible when he did not mention that the kids are not looking for jobs on their own too.

IMO, from my experience, the phrase "financial stability" is a mirage as there is no point that you will ever see yourself as financially stable and poised for marriage. as a man, all you need is to set some realistic (attainable) milestone for yourself before which you will not marry, and be really ready to be flexible with these goals. Although, being able to feed, house (even if it is in face me face you rooms, as long as your wife is comfortable with it) and cloth 3 pple is the least standard which no man should go below.
