HealthHurray : Cure For HIV Found .. but in White Man's ( caucasian's) Blood by PeeDaVinci(op): 11:27am On Jun 06, 2011
http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110603/us_yblog_thelookout/first-man-functionally-cured-of-hiv

Since HIV was discovered 30 years ago this week, 30 million people have died from the disease, and it continues to spread at the rate of 7,000 people per day globally, the UN says.

There's not much good news when it comes to this devastating virus. But that is perhaps why the story of the man scientists call the "Berlin patient" is so remarkable and has generated so much excitement among the HIV advocacy community.

Timothy Ray Brown suffered from both leukemia and HIV when he received a bone marrow stem cell transplant in Berlin, Germany in 2007. The transplant came from a man who was immune to HIV, which scientists say about 1 percent of Caucasians are. (According to San Francisco's CBS affiliate, the trait may be passed down from ancestors who became immune to the plague centuries ago. This Wired story says it was more likely passed down from people who became immune to a smallpox-like disease.)

What happened next has stunned the dozens of scientists who are closely monitoring Brown: His HIV went away.

"He has no replicating virus and he isn't taking any medication. And he will now probably never have any problems with HIV," his doctor Gero Huetter told Reuters. Brown now lives in the Bay Area, and suffers from some mild neurological difficulties after the operation. "It makes me very happy," he says of the incredible cure.

The development of anti-retroviral drugs in the 1990s was the first sign of hope in the epidemic, transforming the disease from a sudden killer to a more manageable illness that could be lived with for decades. But still, the miraculous cocktail of drugs is expensive, costing $13 billion a year in developing countries alone, according to Reuters. That figure is expected to triple in 20 years--raising the worry that more sick people will not be able to afford treatment.

Although Brown's story is remarkable, scientists were quick to point out that bone marrow transplants can be fatal, and there's no way Brown's treatment could be applied to the 33.3 million people around the world living with HIV. The discovery does encourage "cure research," according to Dr. Jay Levy, who co-discovered HIV thirty years ago, something that many people did not even think was possible years ago.

You can watch Brown talk about his cure in this CBS video report.

This article has been updated to include more context about why some people are immune to HIV.
PoliticsRe: Nigerian Woman Shot Dead By German Police Over Welfare Allowance by PeeDaVinci: 4:11pm On May 30, 2011
i see no racist intention but incompetence from the police. anybody anywhere with no  training would have done the same thing the police did. put into proper perspective (from the hind sight) , there is only 1 knife-wielding woman, and two trained policemen , meaning that the police have the capacity to subdue the woman, however, given the fact that the police had to  make split second decision, and i would imagine that  reflex rather than common sense took hold of the police

you cant be more right, they did a lot of things right e.g. fighting for our independence, however, they didnt extol virtues such as hardwork, innovation and they promoted distrust, they were not futuristic in their plans, they only care about here and now,
however, i am more worried about the current generation , for every one thing our fathers got wrong, we are getting ten wrong, without any form of apology, we are worse than them, and i am scared to imagine the kind of nigeria my kids will live in

PoliticsRe: Jonathan Gives NNPC 24 Month Ultimatum To Fix Refineries by PeeDaVinci: 9:27am On May 23, 2011
still wondering when all these gej supporters will realise that this man is a dumbass. simple common sense will tell a leader to first ask  for the problems of the refinery, what are the past attempts and why did they fail, is there any roadmap/plan for a sustainable supply of petroleum products, produce a short term plan of how to fix the refinery and its challenges, a long term plan of how to fix the refinery based on the projected energy needs on the country and its challenges, the impact of these plans on the fg's bugdet and nigerians, the role of gej in making the refinery-fixing plans a reality ,  and he should critically examine these plans together with nnpc , after which he can come out to tell nigerians that "we"will fix the refinery in so so so time . . . . . (by the way, this should not take more than 3 weeks) ,  givin silly orders, to me, is like shifting your responsibility and your faults before the beginning of the project

PoliticsRe: Video: Pdp "Underage" Vote Rigging In Action by PeeDaVinci: 7:23pm On May 16, 2011
there is no justification for any form of extra-judicial killing, more esp. if the victims are innocent, and much more importantly, if the victims are not only innocent, but they are not even connected in whatsoever way to the reason why they are killed e.g. most of the youth corpers killed.
however, dont blame it all one the dim-witted northerners, bt blame it on pdp/gej too, they infuriated the northerners by rigging the election in the north. blamin only the northerner, to me, is like blaming petrol for arson and justifying the lighter

from a 16-year-old, it is a great idea, but overall, it is a very dumb idea, easiest way to rig, no transparency, results is determined by the database admins, db programmer, telecom service provider and computer hackers, e-votin isnt a new idea, bt not even the most technologically advanced country will use it for voting into its public/political offices

all those promises he made are not addressing the core/heart of nigeria's problem. . . . just window-dressing it, so, id rather see it as being myopic to ask him to make good his promises. . . . such a shame that nigeria has never (since independence) been governed by visionary leaders (like BRF) who will intelligence, will and courage to address to address our problem and spur us on to where we truly belong in the committee of nations

PoliticsRe: Buhari: I Will Abolish State Of Origin With State Of Residence. by PeeDaVinci: 8:32am On Apr 15, 2011
9jaganja:
First off, I'm not supporting anyone because I won't openly declare any candidate as relevant to my vision for Nigeria or sharing my vision of Nigeria,
I have the right not to support anyone because I don't have any point to defend my vote for any of them with. I might be part of the problem to you but to me, I'm helping my conscience stay clean. Now that I'm eligible to vote here, if any candidate contradicts my stand, i have the right not to vote for him or her and if the all contradict my stand, then they all not worth being there. So me not voting is a part of me voting for what I believe in Kobojunkie.

This is the problem we will always have,  That it worked before doesn't mean it will work now,  That someone will be identified by his or her state of residence is a conviction the identifier will have to make not the federal government. I don't mind if a position that is reserved for Lagos goes to an Igbo person capable of holding the position well. What I think will breed grief is cultural genocide that will be committed by this kind of policy. If recognition is given to the indigenous population of a state no matter who reside in the state, then unity will easily be promoted. Ask the Cherokees if they are happy their cultures are been forced away by the bigger population. Do you agree that majority rule is barbaric? then you should agree that minorities need to be protected no matter how small their population,  Under Buhari's proposal, we will have a situation whereby the highest breeders have the most territory in Nigeria. Who are we kidding, Igbo land is Igbo land and every other person in Igbo land is a welcomed visitor or resident,  The only way to promote unity is to create avenues that will promote unity not create policies that will impose unity,  America has laws that bans racial preferences at WORK. Now, an employer can choose not to hire a black man which is illegal but the employer can choose to defend himself by saying, the white candidate was a better candidate. has such law policies promoted unity through imposition? NO!,  Unity is naturally attained not politically imposed,  NYSC program in Nigeria is a brilliant example of an avenue to promote unity,  Graduates from south go north etc,  They get to see other parts of Nigeria thereby getting to know other Nigerians,  Federal housing programs that helps families from across Nigeria live a town will be an example of avenue. Work places, schools etc,  all these are tools to promote unity with,  I like when I go to Port Harcourt and I say I'm from Lagos and another friend say I'm from Delta and my Ikwerre friends will say they are from Port Harcourt (Rivers),  Now it helps you identify the person's tribe even though the person resides in your state,

I don't know which countries you call civilized undecided undecided undecided undecided,  I hope you are not referring to America,  America has tried to impose unity since the 60s and it's not working at all,  Most kids become friends with kids from other races in schools etc not in government organized policies. Avenue not policies tongue tongue,  The USA is a colonial entity unlike Nigeria,  In China, your province defines the kind of Chinese you are. And China has lots of tribes,  If you say you are from mainland China, people know your tribe,  If I say I'm from Lagos, people know my tribe and know the kinds of things my people see as an abomination. During the holidays, my friends living in Abuja came with me to Lagos to see grandma and they knew better than to greet her with a hand shake,  Imposed unity almost ruined India hence creation of Pakistan!!!! Peope need to be who they are regardless of where they are,  no one is saying don't come to live in Ogun because you are not from Ota or where not; I'm just saying no matter where you live, you'll always know your people came from somewhere. Do you think the Russians will adopt Buhari's proposal when Russia is a nation of nations? You can only glue Nigeria together by making every nation in Nigeria feel independent,

Maybe i'm high but i know Buhari's proposal is a policy of terror,
will not go into the details of why this policy is the best for nigeria now, but will just ask you a personal question (which millions of nigerian children can identify with these days). my dad is from kogi, my mum is ekiti, was born in osun (ife) and had pry education in osogbo, before moving to lagos, did my first degree in minna, served in katsina, worked in abuja before relocating to lagos again . . . (and the story continues), have only visited kogi and ekiti about 5 times each, i dont even speak my mum /dad's mother tongue, , so, tell me, where am I from??
when i m less busy, will highlight the advantages of this policy to you, open your eyes and be broadminded rather than staying with the old regressive policy which we have always had

woodcook:
Has anybody on this thread consider the fact that Buhari might feel intimidated in the presence of Iweala and he may not always have his way if he chose her.
actually on the contrary, iweala is soft-spoken and may not always have her way with buhari, and in a country where the post of vp is constitutionally ceremonial, she may be forced to resign by being made redundant. and that is what make bakare better - bakare can fight buhari if buhari is going "wayward"

PoliticsRe: Why Buhari Over Ribadu? by PeeDaVinci: 5:18pm On Mar 27, 2011
im a ribadu fan, and ribadu has all the good qualities that one can identify in buhari. however, the northerners considers him too westerner (yoruba-ish) for their liking, and so, momentum in the north is on the side of buhari. given the fact that the tendency to grow bigger increases with size, buhari edged ribadu out. and in order to root out pdp, i am decamping to buhari's camp. will wish acn to seriously consider merger with cpc too
