Politics › Only 10 Banks Are Sound - NDIC by PHIPEX(op): 11:05pm On Aug 21, 2013
Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has rated 10 banks out of the 24 banks in the country, sound in 2012. In its Annual Report and Statement of Account for last year, the corporation affirmed that the sector was relatively stable in 2012 as no bank was found to be unsound as at December 31, 2012. But it declined to name the banks adjudged sound.

Also, a total of 3,380 fraud cases involving the sum of ₦17.97 billion with expected/contingent loss of about ₦4.52 billion in 2012 were recorded in the period under review while the expected/contingent loss had increased by ₦455 million or 10.9 per cent as against ₦4.072 billion reported in 2011. Notwithstanding the 43.7 per cent increase in the number of reported fraud cases from 2,352 in 2011 to 3,380 in 2012, the amount involved decreased by 36.4 per cent from ₦28.40 billion in 2011 to ₦18.04 billion in 2012.

“In the year under review, the licences of 24 Primary Mortgage Banks (PMBs) which had hitherto closed shop and were unable to meet obligations to their depositors and creditors were revoked by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and NDIC was subsequently appointed as liquidator. As at December 2012, 310 out of the 323 Microfinance Banks (MFBs) that rendered returns had met the minimum paid-up capital of ₦20 million. A total of 302 MFBs had capital adequacy ratio of more than 10 per cent. The remaining 555 did not render returns and that situation continued to be a source of concern to NDIC as it was impossible to assess their financial condition and performance on a continuous basis during the year under review,” the report said.

The corporation also paid a cumulative sum of ₦6.82 billion to 528,212 insured depositors of closed banks by December 31, 2012 as against ₦6.68 billion paid to 527,942 insured depositors as at December 31, 2011.

Similarly, the report noted, a total sum of N2.505 billion was paid to 75,322 verified depositors of 95 out of 103 closed MFBs during the year as against the sum of ₦2.249 billion paid to 72,062 verified depositors in 2011 whereas the sum of N73.58 billion had been paid as liquidation dividend to 250,209 depositors of Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) as at December 31, 2012.

“It is pertinent to indicate that a total of 14 out of the 34 banks-in-liquidation prior to 2006 had declared a final dividend of 100 per cent of their total deposits, indicating that all depositors of the affected closed banks had fully recovered their deposits” it said.

Education › Re: Kano University Alumni Slam ASUU Over Strike by PHIPEX(m): 1:53pm On Aug 17, 2013
untainted: I totally agree that strike actions have adverse effect on education but strike is the only weapon available to ASUU.
Government signs an agreement and refuses to implement it after 4 years.
ASUU calls press conference appealing to government and all Nigerians: Government remains unperturbed.
ASUU goes on strike and someone says there are better ways to agitate.
Please if you have a better weapon than strike say it and stop telling striking workers to find it.
ASUU is paid to carryout research, let them find a better way to win their case because this strike as a tool of negotiation has failed. They have professors among them, can't they think of more viable options? If things remain as it is right now we will keep hearing of ASUU strikes in the next 20years. Somebody deviced strike as a negotiation tool, is it impossible for ASUU to device a new tool that suit their current state?
Education › Re: Kano University Alumni Slam ASUU Over Strike by PHIPEX(m): 12:43pm On Aug 17, 2013
I have been hearing of ASUU strike since I was a kid yet nothing good has come out of it. If the only instrument ASUU knows how to use in getting its demand is strike then am convinced that they have failed Nigeria students. I don't know the history of university development in developed countries but I doubt that they got there through strike actions (I stand to be corrected).

Students' time are wasted in school, some that have plans are frustrated in the name of strike yet at the end of it employers of labour will still place an age cap on their job adverts. If you have not been a victim you wouldn't understand how it feels to be an undergraduate in Nigeria.
Politics › Re: Ogun Plans Africa Tallest Building by PHIPEX(m): 12:06pm On Aug 17, 2013
Go to marina at lagos and count the number of multi storey buildings that have been vacant for years. Its difficult to maintain such building!!
Whoever has not been inside some of these high rise buildings at Marina and see the number of vacant rooms will not understand the importance of your observation.

For a place like Abeokuta, building the highest structure in Africa shouldn't rank among top 5 priorities. I have been there and I know that it's in dare need of upliftment structurally not just a status symbol. A place like Marina in Lagos can dream of such because building a 60 storey building in a place where the closest building in height is not more than 12 storey wouldn't be too beautiful to behold nor economically wise. If such money is used to build more malls and the likes it could make more economic sense and attract more people to the town than having the tallest building. I heard the Governor is doing better than his predecessors but until I hear that he has taken care of that major road that enters Agbara Industrial Area I'll reserve my applause.

Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Fashola has been one of the best Governors in recent years but the sweetness of political power which is very transient is about to corrupt the image he has built overtime. What he has been accused of in recent weeks has not and will not do much good to his image across the country and I hope he doesn't allow his sychophants to reduce him to a mere regional and ethnic champion, I really hope so. This action if true makes JEG a true democrat.
Politics › Re: The Lagos Deportation And The Law By Femi Falana by PHIPEX(m): 5:42pm On Aug 11, 2013
Yorubest: Brilliant piece Uncle Femi but I disagree with some parts of this write up

Imprisonment in my opinion isn't deportation

It is also clear that Lagos isn't the first state to relocate beggars and destitutes from other states in a bid to reduce the stretch on its infrastructure by unnecessary influx of people from other states except there is a separate special Federal allocation to cater for this.

Must you come to Lagos to beg? Begging, as a venture, does not require any start up capital or ingenuity.

Just imagine all the beggars and jobless Nigerians thronging Lagos, I'm sure every person that has raised an eyebrow about this action will call for their removal because they will be ready tools for crime and will sit and beg at your front porch, your office gates, line the streets, the markets, your children's schools, your churches, your mosques, your restaurants etc. Should they require medical attention, they will be admitted into the same hospitals government is building ... And I ask, at whose cost? Lagos gets a federal allocation just like every other state these people come from. The other day, one woman from Delta State was wailing and begging at Alausa, asking BRF to help. If BRF had helped this woman, who comes from a state that receives about the most from the FG, what will be the consequence? The next day, a thousand women from the state and others will line the streets of Alausa. BRF's action is aimed at making other governors responsible for their citizens.

Anambra, Akwa Ibom and Abuja have at different times removed indigent non indigenes

Abia's termination of the appointment of non indigenes in its civil service is even a worse form of injustice

From the submission, it is clear that apart from the fact that the relocated Igbos were dumped at 3am (although the explanation was that there was a traffic hitch), there is nothing new, strange and unusual in the move as even Anambra has done same before. Till date, we don't know what has become of those destitutes Anambra picked. Maybe they were dumped at 3am in Kano or even killed or thrown into the river. Who knows?

I also believe that Obi should have contacted BRF directly and its a shame that he still hasn't till date despite being contacted by BRF before the action was taken

Obi has also not in any way offered financial or social first aid to the victims but has chosen to politicize the event

I know some people will not agree with me and I'm not posting this to court anyone's favor or support but if BRF had some blame in this, Obi has an even worse blame
You are very much entitled to your opinion but before you accuse Obi of not contacting Fashola it will be nice to find out what came out of the contact he made when the first deportation was carried out by Fashola last year. It is also worthy to note that while Fashola is not the first to deport fellow citizens, where his action stands out is the manner it was carried out, it made those people look like waste products.

Am happy that legal experts are now talking which should be the most positive outcome of the noise that has been made over this issue for the past two weeks. Hopefully we'll get a court verdict soon to settle this issue once and for all. This is because the actions of all the various state governments with respect to deportation of fellow citizens do not show a well thoughtout plan rather it is more of a short-term and short sighted approach to solving an endemic national problem. The people being deported are said to be poor and regardless of where they are relocated to, they will remain poor. Thus, if there is any action expected of the state governments which are in control of the common wealth of all Nigerians regardless of social class it is to ensure that everyone benefits from the common wealth regardless of state of origin. This is because states of origin are not considered when tax are paid to them or when statutory allocation are sent to them from Abuja, the money they recieve from Abuja monthly belong to both the Managing Director of a company and the begger under the bridge. For example, till this day I have not paid a single kobo to my state of origin as tax, will Lagos that has benefited from my tax deport me if the source of my tax vanishes tomorrow?

If a state government can not take care of the disadvantaged within its own territory then such a state has lost its moral right to control our common wealth.

Jobs/Vacancies › Re: Age Requirement Is Unconstitutional by PHIPEX(m): 5:49pm On Aug 05, 2013
The earlier this issue is settled by the court and prohibited the better for Nigerian youths. Months ago I was invited by KPMG for an aptitude test only to be turned back at their gate because according to them they just realised that am a year older than their cut-off age. Even though am out of the group of unemployed youths but many people are still constantly frustrated for reasons that are not of their making. Now ASUU is still making matters worse for our undergraduates tomorrow they will tell you our graduates are unemployable.

These are the kinds of bills those senators who couldn't sponsor a single bill in 2 yrs should catch in and make impact in our lives.
Politics › Re: Can We Put An End To Ethnic Rivalries And Hostilities? by PHIPEX(m):
If you think it is easy to rule Nigeria, try Nairaland. Even Seun and Moderators have run short of ideas on how to sanitise Nairaland because we are more tribalistic than Rwandans and sometimes I wonder what is actually holding the country as one.

I've heard this appeal and threats before from moderators and it only works for few weeks and gets worse. I can only advice the moderators that controlling Nigerians only works through trial and error methods, even our economic policies defy all known theories. Do whatever is necessary to restore sanity because we are more stubborn than goats. May God help us.

For those complaining of insulting Yoruba leaders, In as much I know that am not guilty of such but what about those mounting insults on Jonathan? is it right to insult the President but wrong to insult a Governor? I must confess that nairalanders popularised the word "Retard" and other of such derogatory words at least to the best of my knowledge. And we know these were ACN and APC supporters and as far as am concerned "respect is reciprocal". It shows lack of self respect to insult a leader (regardless of ethnic origin) in the name of criticism let alone when you turn around and point an accusing finger on others because every "tribe" is guilty of such. Let the issue here be about finding solution to a problem that cuts across board instead pointing accusing fingers as if any section of the country is free from such guilt.

CyberG: No relationship for a disrespectful guest. If you cannot live by our laws and leadership that we trust, please go quickly and never come back!
If you followed my comments you will realsie that my major issue is the manner they were dumped but you are still talking on sentiments because fashola is yet to tell us the laws that were broken by those kidnapped and dumped like waste products. Even if they broke a law what are the modalities in place for punishing law breakers? Mind you, every law in the country must be subject to the constitution so I don't think that should be an issue. Let's all find a solution to the deed already done rather than playing these blame games.
Politics › Re: APC Presidential Ticket: North Woos Danjuma by PHIPEX(m): 3:55pm On Aug 03, 2013
These people keep disappointing me with their moves. Is Danjuma better than Pat Utomi who is a member of their party or is there a blood covenant that says that a Northerner must be provided? The North is in short supply of technocrats, all they have are Ex-service men. How will anyone expect a Fashola or a Rochas to be a VP to a Danjuma? Nawa for these people o and they want me to believe they will be better than PDP when they are always looking for PDP members to steal as Presidential materials undecided undecided I expect them to make this election a contest but if they keep looking for Ex-service men to field then JEG will not even need to campaign before he wins.
Politics › Re: Who Is Senator Chris Ngige Representing At The Senate? By John Okiyi Kalu by PHIPEX(m): 3:39pm On Aug 03, 2013
States, including Lagos state, receive revenue from the Federal Government purse on the basis of how many Nigerians that live in their state. Not on the basis of how many Nigerians are from their state. I know for a fact that during the last census exercise Lagos state Government mounted a serious media campaign tinged with blackmail to demand that non-indigenes, especially Ndigbo, do not leave for their state of origin to be counted. They were even threatened with loss of properties and social services if they travel to their states to be counted. No exception was made for "destitute, street traders, beggars etc". I challenge anyone here or in Lagos state government to come out openly and state that Lagos state government asked destitute etc to return to their "families" or "state of origin" then. Let me also know if Obi and other SE governors received letters then from Fashola to come and retrieve their "destitute" to be counted in the east.
We were told that among the 67 deportees only 14 were from Anambra State. At least Senator Ngige said so. If that is true, permit me to ask, what is the basis of dumping all 67 in Anambra? Is that where their families are? Or is Anambra now the capital of Igbo land? Isn't the message clearly that of "they are your people, take care of them"? Doesn't that sound like ethnic cleansing to my brother Kelechi and our erudite Senator Ngige? So Fashola wrote Obi and told him he was sending all "Igbo destitute" from Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi and Enugu to him to take care since they have blood relationship with him? Or don't those states have governors that can be written or even compelled to receive their deportees? Am I the only one reading tribal sentiments into this whole rubbish? And yet Onwa Chris Ngige saw nothing wrong? Odikwa egwu o.
A simple apology can end all these but everyone is allowing ego and sentiments create more cracks in our relationships.
Politics › Re: Soludo With APGA Membership Card (picture) by PHIPEX(m): 3:19pm On Aug 03, 2013
mikeansy: I disagree, Anambra State allocation from FG is the same whether PDP or APGA is in power because state allocation is enshrined in law!

Also a strong regional party can go into coalition for the purpose of Presidential politics but at least remain strong in their base.

I think it is time to change the focus of Igbo politics from looking for any vehicle whatsoever to produce a President who speaks Igbo to a politics focused on more important things like creating an economic hub in the South East!
I share your sentiment, if Igbos are continually frustrated from presidential ambitions we can divert to conquer Nigeria's economic landscape and by so doing no individual or group will dare to take us for granted. Dangote alone can shape the face of any Nigeria's economic policy even without political power. We can as well enter an alliance at the national level that will keep attracting infrastructural development in the East which is what I thank God APGA did with JEG. We can't continue to be the crying babies of nigeria's politics, let's capture where we have comparative advantage.

As per Soludo, it'll be a brilliant idea to see a Soludo/Obaze ticket. The guy's CV is also intimidating and will also pacify Anambra north of which am one, imagine when these 2 technocrats take control of the state, our people will understand the importance of education. But when touts continue to have their way, they will be indirectly passing message across to our young ones that touting pays.
