PoliticsRe: Should Nigeria Be Divided? by Planner(m): 7:36pm On Sep 22, 2008
It is shocking that Arid north that recieves extremely small amount of immigrant can be more populated that coastal regions. It is only in nigeria that this happens. World over, coastal regions and forested areas are usually more populated than grassy plains. Granted that the northern can marry multiple wives (but the south does too albeit in a smaller scale) but this can not solely explain population growth. If that is the case, why is the Arab regions not vastly more populated than say some parts of Europe?

A man that has 6 wives and 9 children is no more than a man that has a wife and 9 children.

See we should be truthful to ourselves. An averege child born in the south has a better chance of survival to adulthood than an average northerner. Moreso, killer diseases is more prevalent in the northern areas than in the south, and finally, the overall liveability indices is better for the average southerner.

Dranoel,

I do not agree to the fact that Northerners have more population than southerners, irrespictive of their marrying multiple wives, if not why where they so against including ethnic group and religion in the last census? I smell a rat. They know that past census is a sham and the only way they can continue to latch on the resources form the south is to inflate their population.

Finally, i do not know why you are having problems understanding Nigeria1 maps. His maps are very easy to understand. It is just for you to get a post doctoral degree in google map studying and CNN watching (which i did). Whomever that had not followed my example is dump cool.

All right Nigeria@1  a.k.a  Bashali, we all agree unanimously that Akure alone  with 3000 nautical miles is more populous than 11 states of the South E and South S    . That much is obvious from your worthless satellite images. Now can you stop this your population and satellite image terrorism? Omo, don't you know when handshake don pass elbow

Nigeria1,

Try and organise your facts in a concise manner so that your arguments can be better understood. You seems to use graphical images a lot in buttresing your arguments. It is good. But it will be better if you explain them in details.

Your Ojukwu is nothing but a shameless old man, without a shred of conscience. If you feel bad about it, take a jump.
WE feel your pain. Dim Ojukwu is not only old but extremely wealthy with a gorgeous wife to boot (I mean a former beauty queen), na beans!

Iam sure you are merely re-echoing what you dad told you about him. He was unable to achieve one tenth of what Dim Ojukwu has achieved. Oxford graduate. The first Nigerian millitary officer graduate. I also feel your pain. We igbos love him to death and your people are not happy.

Bilymuse if you have the guts tell us where you are from then we can go from there. I am sure you will be too ashamed to tell us were you are from.

Finally, Dim Ojukwu is my hero; strong, macho and rich. He is the Man!

President Yar Adua may be too ill to know that channels television has been shut dow. NBC has moved with an amazing speed in suspending their licence.

In most civilised countries Channels will be purnished by debarring them from state house for while or something. Occupying their business premises is beyond me.

Like I said, you seem to have a bended attitude toward history. You see what you wanted to see in your own myopic mind. Chuba deid almost six years ago and if you write Nigerian history correctly today, Chuba will not be mentioned in negatives, he was the first to alert Nigerians about Obasanjo and they conspired to dent his name and killed him too and only now that Nigerians has known the truth about what Chuba did except minds like you. I hope you knew the difference between accusation against proof or conviction. Who was it that accused Chuba and what was the result of the accusation till now?

To you crime has boundary, that is why you remebered Egwu and forgot Akala, Fayose or lately Ladoja. I am not holding brief for Egwu but I think he is whatever he is not because he is an Igboman but because he became what he wanted to be, same goes for the others I mentioned and that is why Nigerian is a failed state because there are people like you and also thinks like you all over the affairs of the nation, making decision that affect ordinary Igboman with this sort of biased and stereotypical sickness.

You need pitied.
Eziachi, why is God's name are you wasting you time with buffon called Arnold1? Haven't you realised that you are talking an forum fool?

@ Arnold1 what is defference between fleeing six days to the end of war and the last day of thew war? by the way what is last day of war?
Don't you know since it was obvious that the Nigerian side has won, it becoame imperativve that He (Ojukwu) will have to flee (which is not an act of cowardice) so that his flesh will not used for pepper soup. Ojukwu is more brave than all the yoruba and hausa dominated army, if not why were they reluctant to go to war with cameroun when they were threatening Nigerian citizens in the then Nigerian owned Bakassi. Why is Olusegun Obasanjo ( a big fat coward) in shucha big hurry to sign away Bakasi?

Arnold tell your spineless self out of this place. When mpele was attacking us. you quickly ran away, too afraid to confront a real and known enemy but rather chase shadows.

here's such a thing as a dirty war.

When you resort to kidnapping small children in the name of your struggle, then it blurs your fight in the eyes of outsiders.

Among other things.
It's official: Tpia is nuts. I have said earlier, you a fool. The struggle for Niger-Delta however it is done is okay. I have visited those places and the level of both human and envrionmental degradation is unimaginable. now Our President has done them a "favor" by creating useless Niger-delta ministry. it will not work. People like tpia and bilymuse and yemysee loath for a solution to the crises. As far as they are concerned, they want the status quo maintained. the only solution to this crises is a loose confederation, they each unit of the federation merely pay taxes to the coetre and keep the rest.

Does anybody knows of any country that has ever broke up on peace?
bilymuse, you are fool. Trying to break up peacefully is impossible, when there is so much at a stake. Why in Jesus name will the rest of the country want th e south south and south east to go peacefully, they they are they are the geese that lay the golden egg?

when Biafra wanted to go their separate way the other Nigerians did not agree then, fast ward nearly forty years later the same Nigerian are wishing that Nigeria break up. My conclusion: Igbo people and Ojukwu are the heroes.

Finally, I can see that any body that do not agree to you bunch of rascal (bilymuse, yemysee etc) the person will be termed nuts. I have got news for you. We are the emerging majority both in Nigeria and Nairaland.

Hypocrisy will be dethroned, Igbos will defeat their eternal enemies and there will one final Just war between Igbos and their enemies. How wish we succeeded. We would have become the greatest black nation on this planet. do not worry it is never too late. Anu mpam.

So you arent aware Owo has a very large number of people from other parts of Nigeria who live and do business there? I checked with a friend who confirmed this emphatically. Go and ask about the non-Yoruba population of Owo.

Owo also has ties to Benin, from antiquity, as anyone can see from the location and also from the ancient Owo/Benin art on display at many museums abroad.

Please do your homework properly before rushing to unfounded allegations. And yes, you are very paranoid. If you consider your state of mind as being normal then that in itself is a scary thought., and I hope people are safe around you.

No, paranoid is not a compliment. Its a condition that needs urgent and strict management, because it will turn to a more serious incurable problem eventually.
Tpia or Tipia Your reply above is poor attempt in been logical. I sent you a link on the specific kidnappig of igbos in Owo and you posted an answer that does not in anyway address the question. Why is it that some Ibo like claiming Jewish origin, Some even speculated that they are the lost tribe of Israel. I once watched a video where a group of Ibos dressed like Jews with a rabbi observing the Jewish passover, incredible!

There is no historical nor genetic connection between Ibos and Jews. Moreover, the Israeli government has never taken them seriously. Why are some Ibo people determine to scam their way into Israel and pollute the Holy-Land; God forbid , tufiakwa.

Did you notice that these people attacking you viciously (yemmyse, bawomolo, bilymuse and Arnold10) where no where to be found when useless Mpele and RSa were insulting Nigeria and Nigerians? nigeria1,

You said yorubas need more state because of the some reasons (you did not state clearly).

But for geographical equity, south east need more state, you brushed it aside as foolish.

Now if You want more states in the south west, is it the monies from crude produced from the south south states that will be used to fund the states having in mind that the existing south west states are unviable and cannot stand on their feet except for handouts from the federal government.

I want to address the satelite pix above.Pictures taken from high altitude hides a lot of facts.I'm a google earth fan.Nigeria1@ please zoom your google earth and you ld discover that abia is more densely populated.Aba for example has a small core city but extends almost to rivers boundary beyond amapuife to etche.Zoom your google to confirm.Another point is that in the igbo area more of there residential houses fall within the range of 3 to 6 storey buildings. You can't even spot sokoto or birnin kebbi from that range because it would show all white
You are making a point. nigeria1 zoom the satellite photo and in detail, describe how population can be calculated or computed. This will enable us reach a conclusion. honestly, the photos makes no sense to me (and others too). Once you do that then we can start reasoning with you. Moreover, don/t you think that South East deserve an additional state. since it is the only region that have just five states instead of 6?
PoliticsWelsh Dad Shot Dead In South Africa by Planner(op): 11:20am On Sep 13, 2008
Sep 13 2008 by David James, Western Mail

A WELSH father-of-three visiting his terminally ill sister- in-law in South Africa was shot dead by robbers yesterday.

Builder Stephen Peters, 52, was killed at his niece’s home in Pretoria in front of his wife Ann, 49, and niece Siobhan Forman, 29.

The Cardiff man was shot after standing up and pleading with the three men to take anything they wanted but to leave the family alone.

His niece Siobhan, whose husband David, a mining engineer, was away on business, said her uncle had been trying to protect them.

She said: “He was so brave. He was just trying to protect us all. They killed a man for nothing. They didn’t even take much. He just came to say goodbye.”

Mr Peters, from Grosvenor Street, Canton, Cardiff, had travelled to South Africa last Friday to visit his wife Ann’s sister-in-law Mandy Barcoe in Kriel, Mpumalanga. He made the visit because she is dying from cancer.

The couple had spent three nights with their niece in Pretoria’s wealthy Rietvallei Park suburb in the south of the city and were planning to leave yesterday to spend a mini-holiday at a South African beauty spot before flying home next week.

Aveline Hardaker, a police spokeswoman, said the three men had broken into the house at around 3.15am through the window of Sioban’s nine-month-old baby Liam’s bedroom.

“I heard a noise and then three of them came into my bedroom, and one had a gun,” said Ms Forman.

“I started to scream but one of them put his fingers down my throat to keep me quiet.”

She said Mr Peters had been woken by her screams and came into her bedroom and pulled her away from the three robbers and both of them were told to sit down.

The robbers brought her baby Liam and Mr Peters’ wife from other rooms and held the four at gunpoint on the bed, repeatedly telling them to keep quiet in English and Afrikaans while they spent 45 minutes ransacking the house.

When the men stood in front of them and demanded the keys to Ms Forman’s Mercedes Benz and to the house safe, Mr Peters stood up and asked them to take anything they wanted but not to hurt the family.

Ms Forman said they shot him in the neck and continued to search the house.

“Life is very, very unfair. Why? What for? They could have taken anything. What is this country coming to?” said Ms Forman last night.

“We couldn’t help him. They kept searching the house after they killed him and by the time they left we had been tied up.

“As soon as we could, we went to him to try to help but I think it was already too late. When the security guys got here they told us he was dead.

“They just left his body on the floor. He was so brave. He was just trying to protect us all.”

After the shooting, the robbers made off with a computer and mobile phones. They briefly came back as they could not put the Mercedes into reverse.

The two women crawled out of the bedroom and found some nail clippers to undo the shoelaces and belts they had been bound with before alerting police and a security company.

Police, who have launched a murder hunt, later found the stolen Mercedes in a township.

It is understood that officers believe the killers are likely to be South Africans as they were speaking Afrikaans as well as English, unlike the robbers who killed Welshman Fred Picton Turbervill in January this year.

Three men from Mozambique have been charged with the murder of Mr Picton-Turbervill, a 46-year-old father-of-six, originally from Ewenny, near Bridgend, who was killed in front of his wife and children by armed robbers who stole a laptop, mobile phones and cash.

Ms Forman said she and her husband David were now considering leaving South Africa, a country which was ranked the most dangerous in the world for murder and assault by the UN in 2000 but since claims to have stabilised its crime rates.

She said: “Can you imagine what we are going through?

“My mother is dying of cancer, my uncle came to visit under these sad circumstances, and now he is murdered.

“We don’t even have a recent picture of him as the cameras were also stolen.”

She added: “I’ve always said I love living in South Africa but not now. My family has had a couple of brushes with crime but nothing like this.

“We wanted to be here for the World Cup in 2010 but I’m not sure now. Crime here is frightening and it affects everyone. Peter was here on holiday and look what happened.

“We have a lot of relatives abroad. None of them will want to visit us now.”

A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Monday after which the family plans to fly his body home to Wales.

Siobhan said Ann, who recently had a triple heart by-pass operation, would also return to the UK in the coming days where she will be reunited with their two daughters Emma, 28, and Sarah, 24, and son, also called Stephen, 27.

A family friend in Wales said: “Steve was a dedicated family man and lived for his children.

“He knew how upset Ann was about her sister-in-law’s illness.

“They were aware of the violence in South Africa but weren’t worried by it. I don’t know how Ann will cope without him.”

Mr Peters’ neighbour Beryl Morgan said: “They are a lovely family and good neighbours. It is just so tragic for everyone.”

Mrs Morgan said the couple knew how dangerous South Africa was as her nephew Michael Bowen, a Cardiff dad of four, 39, was shot in a robbery in Johannesburg six years ago.

Beryl, 71, said: “I knew Steve and Ann knew about it because it was all over the news at the time. But they were determined to go to see her sister.”

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said that consular officials had offered assistance to the family.

Minister bemoans poverty in post-apartheid South Africa
1 day ago

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) — South African Finance Minister Trevor Manuel Thursday bemoaned despair and poverty among many of its 48 million population more than 14 years after the demise of white-only apartheid regime.

"The harsh and ugly truth that confronts us is that, almost 15 years into democracy, the everyday lives of many of our people remain as uninspired and as filled with despair as it was then," he said at a public lecture.

The lecture was organised in memory of Steve Biko, an anti-apartheid activist and leader of South Africa's Black Consciousness Movement, who died in apartheid prison on September 12, 1977.

More than four million South Africans live below the poverty line, according to government figures.

Manuel said that despite independence, squalor in many townships and run-down communities, "stark inequalities," diseases, violence, crime, poverty and mediocrity still dominated the nation's landscape.

Nelson Mandela in 1994 became South Africa's post-apartheid president following the demise of apartheid.

"Democracy is something to fight for, constantly. Development is not something handed out at the welfare office. It is, giving communities power to changes their lives, empowering young women and men to make contribution to our beautiful country," said Manuel, Finance Minister since 1999.

South Africa, the continent's economic powerhouse, last month launched a nationwide campaign against poverty.

Rugby fans warned of S Africa high murder rate
Sep 13 2008 by Andrew Dagnell, Western Mail

SOUTH AFRICA has one of the highest murder rates in the world, according to United Nations figures.

Between April 2007 and March this year more than 18,000 people were killed and there were a similar number of attempted murders.

During that time there were more than 100,000 aggravated robberies and more than 14,000 car-jackings.

The official figure for the number of rapes every day is 150, although the true figure is thought to be much higher.

Much of the lawlessness takes place in the townships surrounding major cities with drugs, alcohol and unemployment often blamed.

In the past few years, the violence has spilled into suburbs and white areas.

More than 100 policemen were shot dead last year, on and off duty.

Pretoria serves as the country’s administrative capital and is located in the northern part of the Gauteng province.

Thousands of rugby fans will flock there in May and June next year for the British Lion’s tour, including hundreds of Welsh tourists.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has warned tourists to be as vigilant as possible when travelling to South Africa.

In advice published on their website, they say: “During 2007 and 2008 there have been a number of incidents involving foreigners being followed from OR Tambo Airport, Johannesburg, to their destinations by car and then robbed, often at gunpoint.

“We recommend you exercise particular caution in and around the airport and extra vigilance when driving away.

“The risk to visitors travelling to the main tourist destinations is low.

“But if you are mugged or your car is hijacked you should remain calm, offer no resistance and hand over possessions without question. Avoid eye contact. Consult a reliable tour guide if you are visiting a township.”

Welsh emigres living in South Africa have said they had also been victims of violent crime.

Most of them living there have been forced to erect massive walls around their houses to help protect themselves.

Peter Phillips, 60, who runs a successful wine-selling business in Johannesburg having emigrated from Pontypridd 37 years ago, was shot at after he pulled up at traffic lights.

“Two guys approached my car on the outskirts of Johannesburg when I was heading home one evening,” he said.

“I caught something out of the corner of my eye and when I turned to look there was a gun against the window.

“I drove away and they shot at me. The bullet hit the door frame.

“But I’ve travelled the world and I feel no more at risk here than in several other places, including the UK.” Geoff Thomas, 57, a businessman from Margam, lived in Johannesburg for 25 years and still travels there several times a year on business.

He said: “There’s no doubt you feel at risk out here and have to be very careful. For 25 years I was only too aware of the violence but I was never attacked.

“But there are all sorts of horror stories. It used to be you knew a friend of a friend getting attacked, now everyone knows someone who has been attacked.

“Everyone has intense home security. High walls have been a fact of life since the 1980s but most will also have barbed wire or electric fencing – because the guys doing the attacking are carrying AK47s, they are not lightly armed.”

Earlier this year police in Pretoria were ordered to deal with criminals by killing them.

The country’s security minister Susan Shabangu caused controversy when she told officers not to worry about regulations, negotiations or warning shots.

At a public meeting addressing the spiralling crime rate, she told South African police chiefs: “You must not worry about regulations – that is my responsibility. Your responsibility is to serve and protect.

“Criminals are hell-bent on undermining the law and they must now be dealt with.

“There are to be no negotiations with criminals.”

See what south africans are doing to Nigerian. I mean they are depraved:

South Africa apologises as ex Nigerian first lady falls victim to violent xenophobia

The South African Government has apologised for the wave of attacks on foreigners, including Nigerians, which has claimed 42 lives in the country.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday 24 May 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The attacks have mostly affected Nigerians, Mozambicans, Zimbabweans, Kenyans, Somalis and other immigrants of African descent, forcing the South African government to order soldiers to the streets to quell the violence on Thursday.

Prior to the two-week-old violence, there had been series of attacks targetted at Nigerians visiting South Africa as well as some of the staff attached to the Nigerian High Commission in the country.

Among the victims are the wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Mrs Oluremi Obasanjo and a former presidential aspirant, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.

In a statement in Abuja on Friday, the South African Deputy President, Mrs. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, apologised for the ugly situation faced by Nigerians and other foreigners in the former apartheid enclave.

Responding to an address by Nigeria’s Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan, at the opening session of the seventh Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, Mlambo-Ngcuka said, "I want to apologise to those who have been affected and want to give the assurance that those who are responsible will be dealt with by the law.

"The acts over the last few weeks are nothing else but criminal and we will not allow them to destabilise the country and our relations with the citizens of all other countries."

She dismissed prevailing insinuations that the attacks were over fears by the natives that foreigners are taking their jobs, explaining, "I cannot believe that the issue is about jobs. I cannot believe that normal South Africans are anti- their African brothers and sisters. I just cannot believe this [, ] While we do not have all the facts, I can say that South Africans have always appreciated the hospitality shown them by the African continent, their African brothers and sisters, during the dark days of apartheid.

"Let there be reassurance that we are doing all in our power to stop this violence. That we will get to the root causes and that in the long term, we will find solutions to these sometimes complex problems."

Speaking earlier, Jonathan urged the South African Government to immediately address the problem and other contentious issues in its relations with Nigeria. Specifically, Jonathan told Mlambo-Ngcuka her government should put a stop to the imposition of discriminatory visa fees on Nigerian visa applicants, noting that the fees were "strange" because Nigerian applicants are the only group required to pay such.

"It is even more disturbing to know that visitors to South Africa from Europe , the Americas and other far-flung lands are not required to pay these repatriation fees. We believe the imposition of such fees run against the spirit of African unity."

Recalling with nostalgia Nigeria’s invaluable role in the anti-apartheid movement that led to the liberation of South Africa from white minority supremacist rule, the vice-president said attacks on Nigerians in South African cities also ran against the guiding principles of African brotherliness.

Jonathan however, acknowledged the efforts of the South African Government in addressing the problem.
Mpele and RSA respond or are you people going to be too cowardly?

Then tell Mpele to immediately stop disrespecting our country or we will rip his into pieces.
