PoliticsRe: US May Cut Aid For Alamieyeseigha's Pardon by plendil: 7:11am On Mar 18, 2013
all4naija: Measly 225 million dollar all rather is 614 million dollars in aid to Nigeria, you called it. You under-estimate what that means to your allusion. Clearly a conspiracy to make the money looks meaningless. It is very obvious you don't know what that can do in a poor country whose resources have been mismanaged by the same people you are supporting. Please! lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed
You can imagine the nerve. IT may look measly to them (obviously too small for one Nigerian minister to divert to his personal account), but a trip to the ART sections in any of our decaying local hospitals (the ones that are supposedly budgeted billions each year) and what you see there - the drugs, equipment, in some cases staff salary, are almost 100% supported by the US.
PoliticsRe: US May Cut Aid For Alamieyeseigha's Pardon by plendil: 6:44am On Mar 18, 2013
omo_to_dun: I completely agree that Nigeria should reject all foreign aid. You do not want to be beholden to any nation. If America truly cares about other nations, then those aids would be unconditional. I think it is cruel to threaten to stop helping poor people because their government made an unpopular decision. Although I hate Jonathan's decision, Nigeria's sovereignty must be respected by all nations; however, given that we are getting stuff from them, they will always use that to manipulate us.
The man paying the money as every gaddem right to determine how the money is spent. If we find it morally appalling that conditions are attached then I think the wisest thing to do is to address those situations the give rise to the need for such aid in the first place.

Indeed, Nigeria, with our vast resources, should be the last country needing such aid. But given our well documented history of mismanagement and corruption, which, sadly, this administration, with its all its posturing has shown no resolving, we have no choice than to accept such assistance.

Moreover, what's really the big deal. All they ask that governments be more accountable to their people. Is that really a bad thing?
PoliticsRe: US May Cut Aid For Alamieyeseigha's Pardon by plendil: 6:17am On Mar 18, 2013
stillwater: When the US or UK talk about cutting 'aid' to African countries like Nigeria, I can't help but be amazed and ask questions like 'What aid?' lol I would really like to know the Nigerians that have been 'aided' by such 'aids'. They'd better keep their money and use it for something worthwhile.
Then you would have watched over 5 million of your brothers and sisters succumb diseases such as to AIDS, polio, TB and malaria.

One is at liberty to question the altruistic motive of such aids, but the indisputable fact remains that the ordinary Nigerian, especially those financially incapable of jetting out the Hospitals in Europe or US, have benefited immensely from their benevolence.

All these loons desperately trying to justify the ill timed pardon granted Alams by drawing weak and illogical parallels to the US--"they did it, so can we"--should kindly put a sock in it!!

They seem to forget that the US with all its shortcomings--which are indeed many--still remains waaaaaaay ahead of us in almost every sphere conceivable. Of course, no one in his right mind would, or should, look to the US as a model of a corrupt free society. They do indeed have their fare share of miscreants.

However, important distinction between them and us is that they have institutions that function. When you do the crime, you will do the time, no matter who you are. Is that the case in Nigeria?

Anyway, there's no need beating about the bush on this pardon controversy. Given the rebellious stance of Amaechi and co down south, Gej knows he needs all the political leverage he can muster towards 2015, and Alams will play a key role in that. Simple.

O Nigeria!

Lemme get this straight: our anger is with the US is that they had the temerity to question our unfaltering zeal to cement our position as the most corrupt, morally putrid, insufferable nation in the universe?? Remarkable!

Spirit1: I weep for my country. Until we are able to stand up and say enough is enough, this madness will continue in Nigeria, where corrupt politicians will plunder our national wealth and destroy the future of our Children.
Nigerians, why do we watch while our country is a laughing stock in the international community. Tell me which country, business entity or investor that will take Nigeria serious after this shame brought to us by Goodluck Jonathan.
This is the time for us to stand up for our right. This is our "Arab Spring" moment. Let every Nigerian who loves this country stand up and post here, post on twitter, post on Facebook and demand that President Goodluck rescind this shameful act. Carry placards on the streets and say enough is enough!!!
Goodluck just enshrined corruption in our identity and validated the fact that it is ok to plunder the treasures of this country.

Do not think that this will not affect you. The world is a global village and the investment opportunity, the loss of National pride, the harassment in foreign airports and the maltreatment of Nigerians abroad will affect you one way or the other. The refusal of visas to study abroad, for business or for healthcare, because we are viewed as corrupt will affect you. The fact that degrees and government documents issued in Nigeria are potentially fake, will affect you. Who can forget the case of this criminal that Goodluck still calls his "boss". It made world news, it brought insult to us all, we were ridiculed and now a pardon? If we do nothing, then we are saying this is ok. This is our country and we have to take over our destiny.
This is a slap on our faces. Nigerians, if you love this country this is the time to stand up and say enough is enough. Call on Jonathan to reserve this decision within a week or we will take to the streets and "reverse" his Presidency. Please post and repost and repost and repost.
Do not ignore this clarion call. I weep today for my country, for the blood of our heroes and for the future of our children.
Very pathetic indeed. cry
CareerRe: Should Workers Who Use "My Oga At The Top" Joke During Office Hours Be Punished? by plendil: 10:47am On Mar 16, 2013
acidtalk: My Question is, Shouldn't organizations pass a memo to ban this trending joke during Office house amongst its employees?
Methinks a memo requiring employees to have at least the basic info of the organisation they work for, such as its official website address, will be more desirable. Had that been the case, the joke would not have arisen in the first place.

Tackle the cause, not the effects.

HealthRe: Stop Taking Drugs With Soft Drinks, Expert warns by plendil: 7:28am On Mar 14, 2013
chaircover: Mu husband has just finished a course of antibiotics and it was boldly written on the pack that he shouldn't take it with milk. I think it is something to do with the milk stopping the antibiotics from being absorbed.

Some antibiotics have an instruction of taking it 30 minutes before food. Different antibiotocs; different instructions
@bolded, Precisely.

Some can be taken on an empty stomach, others are better absorbed with food; some can be taken with milk, some cannot.

So its a good idea to always go through the product leaflet which contains instructions, usually jargon-free, on how best to take the drug, or better still confirm form your doctor or pharmacist.
HealthRe: Stop Taking Drugs With Soft Drinks, Expert warns by plendil: 7:19am On Mar 14, 2013
dbride: Milk with antibiotic is poison; please don't go there! Be warned.
No need for the alarm. Like I said above, milk will form a complex the tetracyline rendering it unable to be absorbed into the blood stream where it can perform its work. As a result the drug passes though the gut and ends up in the toilet without accomplishing what it was supposed to. There's nothing really poisonous about it.

Its noteworthy that it not just milk, but any product containing what is called 'divalent cations' eg mist mag commonly used for ulcer. Coadmiminstration with tetracyline will prevent the latter from being absorbed.
HealthRe: Stop Taking Drugs With Soft Drinks, Expert warns by plendil: 10:56pm On Mar 11, 2013
TUMIC: Ilorin - A pharmacist, Busayo Idowu of the Department of Pharmacy, University of Ilorin
Teaching Hospital (UITH), warned on Saturday that taking drugs with beverages such as soft drinks could have adverse effects.
In an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin, Idowu said that drugs, if taken with soft drinks might affect the absorption of the drugs. The expert noted that most soft drinks were acidic, which could decrease the anti bacterial action of tetracycline as they contain
carbonates. Idowu warned further that such acidic drinks
when combined with drugs could cause adverse reaction to patients.
According to him, absorption of some drugs such as aspirin, ketoconazole and phenytoin
could be affected also when taking with acidic beverage. He added that such drugs were best absorbed at highly acidic levels when taken orally.

"Acidic beverages delay the absorption rate and action of Erythromycin”, he said. He advised that drugs should preferably be used with water as it had the properties capable of eliminating unwanted effects.
I word is enough for the wise.

NAN

It appears there was some confusion with the article. The 'acidic drink prohibition' doesn't apply to all drugs, only those that are basic (alkaline-loving) in nature. The reason is simple chemistry: A basic drug in an acidic environment will lead to ionization of the former which will render it charged and consequently less lipid soluble. This makes it difficult for the drug to penetrate the layer (also lipid in nature) that separates the lining of stomach/small intestine from the blood stream. Aspirin, an acidic drug, is actually better absorbed in an acidic environment.

Just to be safe, it better too use, wherever possible a neutral compound - yeah you guessed it: WATERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!! grin grin
HealthRe: Stop Taking Drugs With Soft Drinks, Expert warns by plendil: 10:36pm On Mar 11, 2013
firstly, the time the drugs and soft drink spends in the mouth is hardly up to 10 seconds. The stomach where the drugs first goes to has a pH of 1.0-3.5, which is more acidic than most soft drinks which is less than 5.5. so does the soft drink really make any difference to the medication we take?
Not necessarily. some like grape juice can be as low as 2.5.

secondly, most tetracycline drugs are encapsulated, with the active ingredient inside the capsule, this means that it takes a long time for the drug to be absorbed into the bloodstream, or react with the system. on the other hand, soft drinks are liquid and are easily adsorbed and excreted from the system so does this make any difference??
The capsule will dissolve in about 10 seconds after ingestion, which gives it plenty of time to react with the 'soft drink'.
HealthRe: Stop Taking Drugs With Soft Drinks, Expert warns by plendil: 10:28pm On Mar 11, 2013
Seun: What about milk? I've found that taking some drugs with milk seems to eliminate the bitter aftertaste. Milk is not acidic, so I guess it should be ok.
Not with certain drugs like Tetracyline. Milk forms a non-absorbable complex with it, rendering the drug useless.

However for fatty drugs like artemether/lumefantrine (Coartem, lonart, etc) milk will actually increase the absorption and its use is in fact recommended for taking drugs like the aforementioned.

Asian cars your Toyotas, Hondas, Nissan, Hydunadi, kia, etc are almost 90% FWD. Some European cars eg golf, Peuogut are also FWD.

same here. interesting article BTW. Just wish it had more facts to back up some of these claims.

Its a well known fact that racing a cold engine is the easiest way to early wear and tear. but I suppose the article is trying to point out that the time spent warming up the engine (up to five minutes idling in my case) actually does more damage.
