Wallie: Really?Yes, I should have added that the restriction applies only to its non-idiomatic or non-phrasal verb use. As such all your sentences are correct, except the last one. It should be 'Can you hear me' or 'do you hear me'. Such verbs are supposed to express action at a specific point in time and such using them in continuous tenses is an anomaly. I should add though, that it's perhaps not a very strict rule, and that is why the Oxford dictionary will say such verbs 'not usually used in continuous(progressive) tenses' http://esl.about.com/od/grammarintermediate/a/noncontinuous.htm http://www.englishclub.com/grammar/verbs-m_vmwct_1.htm |
justmenoni: this got me laughing out loud, but i dont agree over this one: I am hearing u. Instead of , i can hear u.'I'm hearing you' is deemed incorrect in formal English. Such verbs of perception see, hear, understand, feel, are not usually used in continuous tenses. Thus I'm seeing you is wrong. It should be 'I can see you' |
Em-my:You misunderstand OP. Current can indeed be low, so in that context its not strictly a grammatical error. But that dim light we observe as a result of power from PHCN is actually a result of low voltage, not low current. |

Not surprising at all. I knew such a recant was in the offing - it shows the respected prof still has some credibility after all. As I remarked in the previous thread, his earlier claim that he had found a cure was outlandishly premature, that is if we assume the agent in question did indeed have some activity against the virus. |
Wait a minute I hope this is not the Eggon along Lafia-Akawanga road? Abeg tell me, cos I go follow that side tomorrow!! |
There's no doubt that the nursing profession boasts of some of the sexist ladies on earth. In fact at a point I thought having the 'figure 8' was a criteria for getting enrolled in nursing school. ![]() |

A massive fire has ripped through one of the poorest suburbs in the Nigerian city of Lagos, burning down ramshackle homes and workshops. Dozens of buildings were destroyed as flames tore through Ebute Metta, a community along the Lagos lagoon where sawmills process timber brought in from across Nigeria. The huge blaze could be seen from the city's long Third Mainland Bridge, with people stopping their cars on the bridge to take mobile phone images of the fire. Firefighters fought to stop the inferno after locals tried in vain to put out the flames with buckets of water. Paul Apeti, a 48-year-old timber factory owner, said millions of people lived in the area and more than 250 properties had been burned down. "Fire consumed the whole place, we were fighting the flames ourselves until the firefighters got here," he added. Firefighters fought to bring the blaze under control It is unclear if anyone was injured in the blaze and Nigeria's emergency services have not commented. The fire was the second major one in the city in recent weeks. On Boxing Day a massive explosion ripped through a warehouse full of fireworks in a crowded neighbourhood in Lagos Island, killing one person and injuring at least 15 others. Fire remains a major danger in Nigeria, where many people store petrol and diesel in their homes to run generators for electricity. Lagos is the commercial hub of Africa's second biggest economy and is home to an estimated 17 million people. Just came across this n CNN. so sad |
FOlks should realize is that there many agents in the market capable of bringing the virus down to undetectable levels (<40cell/ML), leading to the disappearance of opportunistic infections and concomitant increase in CD4. This will lead to dramatic improvement in the health of the individual, as I've personally witnessed on numerous occasions. The problem is that the virus has been found to 'hide' in what known as latent cells VERY EARLY IN INFECTION, and since our conventional ARVs only attack viruses that are actively replicating, these viruses are spared and can remain so for many years, even decades. Once however therapy is discontinued, and the latent cells are triggered through a process not completely understood, they begin replicating again. Therefore a cure should: 1.) Totally eradicate the virus from every reservoir in the body (known as sterilizing cure - not very promising). 2.) Prevent the latent cells from ever becoming active (functional cure - some progress in this regard) 3.) Force the latent cells to become active so they can be cleared by the conventional ARVs. 4.) Render CD4 cells immune from infection (Gene therapy) Note that a person became sero negative does not imply he has been cured. It only means the body is no longer producing antibodies to the virus, the presence of which rapid tests rely on. |
aribisala0: When doctors make discoveries they take them to other doctors who ask a lotta questions just to be sure. They do not take their discoveries to Vanguard or ThisDay. That is the scientific way. Somehow I doubt that it would be a secret when a cure for HIV-AIDS is foundNo mind those conspiracy theorists. Once a cure is available, it will be published in reputable journals and subjected to intensive scrutiny. |
First bank seems to be the culprit |
Burger01: Faintly positive... Probably the diagnosis is giving false positive to HIV...We regard such a case as negative. What I guess they're referring to was the subject having a very low viral load, almost undetectable. In such a case it is still positive. there is no such thing as faintly positive when it comes to HIV. |
Furthermore, all those singing the conspiracy theory should kindly, and most respectfully, PUT A F^^KING SOCK IN IT!! For a start, the West actually has more to gain from a cure than its continuous sponsorship of care and treatment programs in Africa and much of the developing world. Secondly most of the medicines no longer come from them (the WEST), they come from INDIA. Thirdly, patents that guarantee sole manufacture and sale of novel medications are no longer as lucrative as it used to be. Within a few months, its generic brands will be the markets. ..and so on. Even if we accept that some kind of conspiracy went into the of the making of the virus, the claim that a cure has been found but hidden from public is, to those of us that are at least a bit informed, ludicrous. |
This man is supposed to be a renowned prof of an institution with a pedigree as imposing as Uniben's; but his utterances, I must confess, have left me disappointed. Where do I even start? 'Faintly positive'?? What the F^^k does that mean? Its either positive or negative, simple! In which journal was the results published, if it has been at all? Or it just a case of Vanguard playing on our gullibility and collective morbid interest in sensationalist bullshit?? I do not doubt that the man may come out with something, but the method he has gone about it is what you expect from those roadside tradohealers, not someone of his standing. |
and who is egwuda33, by the way?? |
Funnily, I'm yet to get this breakthrough from any other independent source. They all seem to be quoting one 'healthnews', which I certainly don't regards as an authoritative source. |
It's actually for unprotected sex, and it was based on a study carried out some time ago. However I should add that other criteria were that the partner must have very low viral load, and must not have any STI, which of course increases the risk of transmission. Nonetheless discordant couples are advised to still use condoms. It well documented that the lower the viral load, the lower the risk of transmission. |
Drunk: Just reading about Maurice Iwu. There seems to be no record of his undergraduate enrollment. I am sure no Nigerian university offered that course as at 1960s through 1970s. Can anyone help?OAU started offering the course (Pharmacy) from the early 1960's. However I think his degree was obtained abraod |
T9ksy: @ bolded, that's a load of baloney, jo. Come to my local gym and see 50-something years old guys working out like there's no tommorrow. As long as they've been examined and certified fit by a competent doctor, then its no problem. For over 50s to engage in exercises, especially the strenuous type, without medical advice can be dangerous. |
