TheSuperNerd: US news and World report huh?
Well, I trust their academic rankings and some others BUT THIS IS NONSENSE.
Based on what exactly?
Of course, Nigeria is corrupt but please tell me any country that lacks it. Even the U.S. Should score 10/10 in corruption..... Hey, I'm a scholar at one of their institutions but this is the truth.
Anyway, The U.S are still the world power with U.K. As their strongest ally but Corruption is deepseated in the U.S. in a manner the general public or eyes of the world cannot detect. #fact If you will score US 10/10 on corruption like Nigeria, then I very much doubt that you are a scholar in one of their institutions as you claim. In Nigeria corruption has become interwoven with our culture. It is part of life here. In fact, you will find it almost impossible to live in Nigeria if you decide not to get involved in one corrupt act or the other. |

DropShot: Shame!
Is there anything to be proud about, or to fight over, in the two cases? Only shameless people will do that.
Facts: 1. Both are criminal suspects 2. Different corruption agencies are handling their case. 3. Different judges are involved. 4. Different details, different circumstances, and different disposition in bith cases.
Uncooperative attitude of Metuh, displaying of impunity towards law enforcers, plus his diarrhea mouth have meant that he is jointly a scape goat alongside Dasuki in the fight against corruption. So we can no longer criticize the government? Even the spokesman of the main opposition party cannot criticize because Buhari is president right? |

sunnyflakes: If you are a true democrat, you won't be here celebrating the defeat of democracy. In law, all persons are innocent until they are proven guilty by a court of law. Late President Yaradua gave life to the rule of law, a phenomenon President Buhari is fast throwing to the mud. how can a man be accused of taking about 400million and u place his bail at 700million.
The simple moral in all this is; steal as much as u can while you have the opportunity. So you can meet bail conditions anytime any day.
Metu can go to jail for the rest of his life if found guilty.
But the judiciary need to, very urgently, extricate itself from executive manipulation so that people will continue have hope in the judiciary. The most appalling of their evident retrogression, being the way they handled electoral tribunals across the country. Gush! it was too clear they were reading a script obviously written by the Buhari led federal government.
The judges of good conscience need to take gauntlet and move the judiciary out of this obvious judicial doldrum and quagmire. Sincerely, justice at the moment in Nigeria is at its lowest ebb. Thanks man. Majority of the people are too dumb to understand what is going on. The future is not looking good for this country. |

akinsbaba2015: . The sureties are depositing with the courts title deeds of their landed property at a location specified by the court, all these documents will be verified by all parties, EFCC, the court registrar and the ministry of lands in that particular jurisdiction. Its no tea party at all. But have you understood the basic meaning of the bail Metuh was granted? He will not pay any money yet. From your excited reaction, you think he will have to go pay 1billion naira to the court. But that is not the case. |

kay29000: Pardon my ignorance people, I want to understand this bail thing. Does it mean Metuh has to pay 600 million cash? And will he get it back at any point? Please someone should enlighten me. Thanks in advance. He is not required to pay any cash. His sureties are required to deposit documents for properties that are worth at least the bail money. This is to guarantee that he will appear in court when required. If he jumps bail, that is if he fails to appear, the properties are forfeited. Having said that, it's still not easy meeting the difficult bail conditions the court gave. How many people can boast of properties worth 600m Naira? But he is PDP spokesman. So his party would provide sureties for him. |

Y nemadfsyahooc: Let me add my voice here, bail money or property is not deposited anywhere. It is called bail bond. Bond because its a written agreement that surety will provide the accused in court whenever needed and a guarantee that he will not jumb bail. Its only when e jumb bail that the court confisticate the properties in the bail bond. Simple. Abi una never go bail person for court b4 no. You are correct. You don't have to deposit any cash. |
Politics › Re: What Bail Conditions Really Mean by poseidon12: 1:12am On Jan 23, 2016 |
Themaingate: All those things you guys are reading online about meaning of bail does not work in Nigeria.
Here in Nigeria once the court grant someone BAIL, BEFORE THAT PERSON CAN BE RELEASE FROM PRISON, THE SURETIES MUST PAY 10% OF THE SAID AMOUNT. GO ASK ANY LAWYER Not true. Conditions are generally at the discretion of the Judge. And you usually don't have to deposit any money before being released. Paying cash only happens if accused fails to appear in court for trial. |
Politics › Re: What Bail Conditions Really Mean by poseidon12: 1:07am On Jan 23, 2016 |
Mike008: Under the Nigerian Criminal Justice System. Any of the following Conditions/Terms/Types (however you chose to call it) of bail are usually utilized by the courts or police.
1. Bail on self-recognizance: this is where an accused person is granted bail on the basis of his status or reputation, with the belief that, he will attend his trial. The accused person is not required to enter into a bond or provide sureties.
2. Bail on bond for a fixed amount: here an accused person executes a bond i.e. an agreement, for a fixed amount without a surety that he will appear in court or police station on a specified date. Where the accused person fails to appear in court on the stipulated date, he will be liable to pay the amount stated in the bond.
3. Bail on a bond with surety (ies) : here, an accused person produces one or more sureties who executes a bond on behalf of the accused, guaranteeing his attendance to court. As in the above case, the sureties will be liable to the sum in the bail bond.
4. Deposit of Money Instead of a Bond : here the accused person applies to pay a sum of money as deposit instead of entering into a bond.
Note: because certain bail conditions are at the discretion of the courts, the courts may impute additional conditions to ensure compliance in cases where bail should ordinarily not be granted, e.g. Capital offences. Consequently, courts may demand that a surety must be resident within jurisdiction, own landed property or swear to an affidavit or the accused person deposits his international passport. Thanks for the explanation. This clears the confusion most of us are having on what bail really means in Nigeria. |
Politics › Re: What Bail Conditions Really Mean by poseidon12: 1:02am On Jan 23, 2016 |
ccoolitempa: This is very simple...no confusion here. Bail money is demanded by the court as a sort of guarantee to stop an individual fleeing/not showing up in court and if that bail is provided, the individual under trial is then released to stand trial but the bail is held in the custody of the court. If the individual does not show up, the bail is forfeited by the individual who put up the bail. This is held until the end of the trial whatever the outcome. If bail money is paid to the court, what is then the need for submitting the C of O to a property that covers the bail money? |
