Pumping 777/wendy,

My junior brother just got a margin facility of #5m and he wants to invest all in two stocks that will give him good returns within three months. Which stocks do you think he should choose. He wants me to select for him so I need some assistance here.

Peace.
I think it is better you and your brother make some choices based on your own initial analsis and send to the house for further analysis.

Then based on your risk appetite and the analysis of boyz and girls in the house, you can decide.

Good luck.

oga pumping, please whats all the hullaballo about UBA, it lost 5% today, whats going on abeg.
Well, almost 4%.

The strongest rumour relates to an extraordinary item on the AGM agenda next Friday. UBA wants to increase it's authorized share capital to 15B and some folks feel that this is because of a PO.

I suspect it is more likely to be for a bonus. UBA is seriously due for a bonus and since they have already issued 11.5B shares out of the authorized share capital of 12B this is not possible without the increase.

Let's keep our fingers crossed sha. This is Naija. Anything can happen. Anyway, even if UBA lists 15B shares it still has better fundamentals than more than 70% of the banking stocks and can afford to cut N2 DPS.

@ pumping, yoyo ke? what margin have you been pulling out? The low point has been around N75.00 & the high point about N82 for the past few months,  that's less than 10%,  and not including any broker fees & commission
By yo-yo in this case, I mean that the stock has been going sideways like I said in my post. No cyclic movement. That is why I dumped it.

No chance for a reasonable margin for the weeks I held it. A long term candidate in my opinion.

Pumping 777,

I bi like say Flour Mill go reach #100 before their year end in march o
Flour wetin? I dumped that stock like 3 weeks ago. It was a yo-yo stock only good at moving sideways grin. There are several stocks that will do better than Flour Mills long term or short term.

Don't get me wrong, it can do N100, but that is no fantastic margin looking at it's current price of N83.

invisible!:
Not too late to buy japaul, if the bonus rumor is connfirmed, the company will likely do about N12. Depending on the bonus ratio.
Based on their issued share capital, they cannot go for 1:1 but they can easily accomodate 1:2 or even higher.

I don't think it is too late. The bull run of the stock cannot continue till March or April when the results will be announced. There should be some dips which provide the opportunity to hop on.

As invisible! posted, announcement of the bonus will still push up the price. One just has to hope that there is no major dip in price before then.

And the point raised by Mr. Risky. Very valid. It depends on your risk appetite. I will not buy Japaul at its current price unless you put a gun to my head. Dead fundamentals.

Good for you! I hear rumors of a bonus issue, not sure how true this is though
I think this is almost certain. Remember the PO was at N3.95 and new shares don't qualify for dividends or bonus?? The PO discount will end up being artificial. Another First Bank.

Pumping 777 and wendy,

What is your take on WAPCO now that the banned on imported cements has been lifted by the Govt.

Peace.
I feel this sector will have a hard time dealing with lower margins because of the high cost of production especially the cost of energy. A lot will depend on the price that the importers are able to bring the cement into Nigeria.

If it is well below the local price of Cement, these all cement companies including Wapco will have a hard time. For me though, I feel that Wapco will definitely weather the storm though it will not be a candidate in my portfolio right now. Short or long term.

Thanks. Good for me I kept the part of my excel sheet with the history of number of deals because Aptistock and Metastock does not store this data.

But wait o, aren't tax returns due in April? Why would Yodi be doing it now -- unless of course she get chunky chunky tax refund cheesy cheesy

@Yodiyokun, remember to channel some of those refunds my way oh, I'll be very happy to collect . . . wink cheesy
Ha. This is how we know those that went to Harvard.
High volatility and serious volume. I now have a list. Now I have to sift for low nominal price and reasonable fundamentals. Chei. I feel like someone playing the slot machines.

It's not personal tax refund that is holding yodiyokun. I have not even started my own. I have sent appeal to IRS to let me make my returns to Naija tax office. Awaiting their response.

@ osazeet,

hope you bought UTC below 3.50 because I believe it will struggle to pass the 4.30 mark. the stock just moves when the market experiencs a bullish run. As per Fidelity just ride the wave and get out when you can. Somebody should actually be in jail for Fidelity to go above N5 with 16b+ share b4PO. it is risky messing with these stocks without fundamentals. Take your profits as soon as you can and move. the suspicious thing about UTC is that they have not released any quartely results this year. What do you expect from a company that does this. Even LIVESTOCK and CHAMPION have all released results in the past year. I hope you know when to pull out though.

@ easimoni,

I think the problem with IKEJAHOTEL is market sentiment. Likewise DANGSUGAR. One question I have though is did the folks that bought into the IPO receive the YE06 dividend of 10k. If so the cool. Anywhich way you look at the scenarion it pans out well it they made a loss in 4Q06 then good for the 07 results if they are doing better than 06 then better grin
In the case of Livestock, poor results and followed by further dilution of shares due to private placment with 3 investors.

End result? Over 50% capital appreciation. I beg, I am looking from some Unilag (or Harvard) professor to explain the behaviour of this NSE.

Fo2 - I heard that the meeting between you and Madam Ndidi delayed start of trading today. Make you take your time o.

@yodiyokun - Where are you nowhuh Na USA go first do Tax returns  grin grin grin They do it in Nigeria too now and all our Accountants and Auditors are still in the house. I go vex for IRS o.

@ Wendy,
Ikeja Hotels looks cheap at the current price. 2 things that bother me:the 9 months for 2006 was higher than the FY for 2006. Looks like they "lost" money in the last 3 months of 2006 (I thought the last 3 months was when Hotels made most of their money). Also, the PAT growth rate is in the teens. The 06 prospectus is still on the website if you wish to read it.

Of course, if you can get it on the floor. Thats the only place you can get it anyway. The bonus will be on 1billion outstanding shares. Any unit you buy at whatever price is still part of 1billion outstanding.

@Pumping777
Hope you know 'slack' in getting Deap oh.As far as investors appetite for bonus still dey strong, you are in for one ride you wont forget in a hurry.3M gain already. still counting! grin. Honestly, I wouldnt know if the ride has started already. While person go dey chase different shares why you can concentrate on one or two and milk it for all its worth, it is extreme and highly risky, totally at variance to the highly publicised strategy of spreading ones risk.
Unfortunately no luck in getting on Friday. My bid was too low. Let's see if some profit takers will give us a depression cycle.

Pumping, please what is the implication of that?
Risky  but I will look for one low nominal priced stock (compared to others in the same industry) that I can ride on during the next bull run whenever that is.

It must of course trade adequate volumes and have fair fundamentals. It's not as easy as it sounds though but I am digging in.

PO in consecutive years? Don't think UBA will attempt it. They could simply be making space in the authorized share capital for a 1-for-4 bonus. After all, the nominal price is the highest in the industry (not that that means anything to me, I'm concentrating my portfolio ASAP).
I have looked at every scenario possible and I can't see on good reason for downgrading UBA from a BUY.

Another story. We need to take a better look at the impact of the nominal price of stocks. If one looks closely, you will find that the stocks that have appreciated the most this year are fundamentally expensive stocks with low nominal value.

Check out Oasis insurance and some other insurance stocks. Wapic has moved from N7 to N11 (about 55%)  since the insurance funds were released but stocks like Oasis have done more than 100% with no fundamentals to speak of!!!

Everywhere I have been looking on the NSE, it is the same story.

Well. Looking on the bright side. Even if UBA lists the entire 15B shares, the forward PE is still around 20 (but add another 5 for the risk of the cowboy CEO  grin grin) making 25.

@aktopgun, doctors practice medicine, all "we" know is medicine, but God is the true Healer, Here's a prayer

Dear Lord Jesus: Thank you for Your announcement that You are the Lord, our Healer. Tobechukwu, he was given as a gift from you to "praise You" ALL the days of his life. When Jesus suffered on the cross, was bruised, beaten and torn, any possible sicknesses were laid on Him so that Tobe could be free. He was healed even before I knew I was going to receive your gift! Christ redeemed us from the curse, so in the name of Jesus, I forbid any sickness or disease to come upon his body. Every germ and virus that touches it dies instantly in the mighty name of Jesus. Every part of his body functions to the perfection to when you o God created it to function.
We thank you God that you are with us now
AMEN
AMEN.

All I know is that the Lord has healed Tobechukwu. It is well.

@ Pumping777 and easimoni
The trend of UBA share might not be completely unrelated to an item on the agenda of their AGM coming up on 18 jan 2008. Specifically iten no 6 and first under special business. It reads--to incease authorized share capital from N6B to N7.5B.  Following this, there might be a posibility of another offer soon despite previous denial by their MD.

In any case I go follow una buy sha.
Ha. This can also be to take care of bonus issue at the end of this fiscal year. Of course it can also be for a PO because that is an additional 3B shares which will translate to N120B if offered at N40 in a PO.

Oga Sir, please I don't understand your rationale oh. You turn down free money because you don't want to give up 10% of the free awoof?
It is not free money. The stock is marked down in price and usually drops in price immediately after since investors lose interest. Often you make more money selling early while the price is still high though you now don't get the dividends.

@invisible

Hi. . .I can see u (not so invisible) guys are still online,so here's my question if you please. . .

Going by past analysis by @gurus et al,concerning Fidelity bank that was then considered overvalued at TS price.
What was said to be its fairvalue?

Perhaps you should whisper it into my ear  wink.
To be fair, Fidelity has grown it's PAT over 2 periods from the time it went on TS and when TS was lifted, so it's fundamentals don't look bad anymore.

Looking at the banking sector right now, I think N10.50 will be a fair price looking short to medium term. This is because there are some banking stocks that I will still consider cheaper.

For a long term value investor though, even N11.00 can be considered a fair price.

haha ok I was wondering, how is the online portal? Also do they let you use their address? cause I'm leaning more towards them than BGL because my cousin works there, and it'd be great to have someone on ground.
Actually the 10% is a 10% fees on dividends, have you noticed that, and why is that?
There may be some mistake. I am with BGL. The online portal (WAS) excellent but it has been down for up to 3 months. The reason that has been given is that they are upgrading and all transactions will be possible online. Frankly I was happy with what the had before.
