are you sure they are pagan? I thought Yoruba had and still have a Deity called Eledumare /olodumare /Olorun. Do you call that paganism? A people that stood and fight Against Islamization of Yoruba land. Do you think it wasnt GOD that helped the Yoruba warriors who fought against Jihadist? Yoruba Race are not ordinary Race. If you understand spiritualism, you know what I mean. It wasn't ordinary they fought against themselves at first and again fought and won against the Jihadist 1839/1840.
Exactly the same thing Boko Haram is doing. Those jihad is were worst than Boko Haram and of course they was no social media or telephone to warn neighboring town that blood sucking Islamist wanted everybody in ur town to bow to Mecca or die.

It's funny That some africans are still captured like that and bowing and facing mecca doing praying.

I'd hate to stop your flow, you're doing a nice service by telling Nigerian history.

And by the way, if you know where I can get the book online please tell me and I'll place an order.

But to answer your retort, Bini at some point routed Yoruba towns, even going as far as Eko (Eko is a bini word). If you dig hard enough you'll find a short list of Yoruba towns that were vassals to the Oba at various times of Yoruba history.

However, the issue was that the Obas were very vile and wicked. It is why there was mass emigration from the Bini empire by present day Urhobo, Isoko, and several other peoples in the SS regions. And why the Obas couldn't consolidate on victories to expand deep into Yoruba land.

I will also agree that feudal history in pre-independence Nigeria and in fact the rest of the world was marked by blatant and often shameful bouts of treachery. But the treachery I refer to here is not prince to king treachery, but the treachery against your own people for selfish reasons. The difference should be made. I wonder how long the Yoruba people will turn a blind eye to that (not that I care anyway).

I don't fully agree on the root causes you mentioned, but then that's another discussion altogether.

Keep the posts coming.

The fulanis were already experienced in battle during the Rade of Mohammedans in Egypt and across the Sahara desert.

They had more weapons etc all coming from Egypt Libya etc . As you know the Arabs during that time were even richer than Europeans as they were gold and traders using camel.

However reverse came after the invention of ships by the Portuguese and this lead to the demise of the Arab culture.

It also allowed the south to exchange slaves for guns and gunpowder

Bruv you're living in the present.

My question to you is did you read a finance/management/economics course in school?

A lot of factors determine oil prices, what u noted is called 'fracking' that's the new technique of getting oil.

Like I said boss, oil prices will rebound, it's a question of when not how.

Russia wants to start drilling further into the artic and very remote areas in siberia... do u think u know more than the white men whose job it is to forecast demand? Oil & gasfutures?

What's affecting naija, Venezuela n co. isn't low gas prices, it's the OVER-DEPENDENCE on oil.

Mardi gras (an annual masquerade festival in new orleans, louisiana USA) contributes over $50m to us GDP

How much does obudu, olumirin, ikogosi, badagry museum, yankari, argungu festival etc contribute to naija GDP?

UAE used oil to transform dubai, you know how many FTZ are in UAE? Recently lagos unveiled ambitious plans for their own...while SS leaders are jonzing (betraying Donald duke's plan)

Don't worry about the oil prices, worry about nigeria being strategically positioned to benefit from the next price boom & not waste it via embezzlement
Keep waiting for oil.boom . I am no economist neither did I study economy but it's commonsense.

without oil . Nigeria can survive.

India does not have a drop of oil and they are richer than nigeria.

The problem with oil is that it breeds corruption

Bruv you're right a bit but u missed my point.

Oil value will still shoot up, oil needs go beyond cars.

Even gas (which abound in oil fields) continue to be highly sought after.

So NO oil will continue to be a major asset.

But he's right we need to diversify and introduce fiscal federalism so more revenue streams come up.
How will oil value shoot up ? When OPEC had to manipulate production by reducing supply that they didn't want to do.

THERE ARE TRILLIONS OF OIL RESERVE.AVAILABLE SO.OVER SUPPLY HAS LEAD TO LESS DEMAND.

In Venezuela there is . massive famine due to drop in oil prices not only Nigeria.

Also middle east are suffering too

The gist is there is better technology available to get oil so now and just to let u know only US DOES SHALE. WHAT IF THE START SHALE IN NIGERIA OR MIDDLE.EAST?.

THE PRICE OF A BARREL OF OIL WILL BE THE SAME AS A WATER.

When russia, china, usa, Canada are aggressively exploring new fields ...especially russia that E.U depends on
What they are saying is the world now has trillions of oil reserve

Also electric cars would be taking over in a couple of years.

Press Statement
John Kirby
Assistant Secretary and Department Spokesperson, Bureau of Public Affairs
Washington, DC
December 8, 2016

On December 5th, the Kaduna State Government in Nigeria issued a long-awaited White Paper on clashes last year that resulted in the deaths of a reported 348 civilians and one soldier. We fully agree with the White Paper’s recommendation that members of the military who were involved in the unlawful killing of civilians must be held accountable and punished appropriately. As the one-year anniversary of this tragic event approaches, we call on the federal government to be diligent, transparent, and expeditious in following through on this recommendation.

We are concerned by the White Paper’s characterization of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) as an “insurgent group,” and urge the Nigerian government at every level to seek pathways for non-violent engagement with all citizens, including minority religious groups. We also encourage the federal government to act on the Abuja high court’s decision on December 2 that IMN leader Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife should be released from prison within 45 days, as they have been held without charge since the events of last December.

We note reports that the IMN has taken actions that have undermined public order and safety. We call on the IMN to respect public order and cooperate with law enforcement authorities as they carry out their lawful duties.

Respect for the rule of law and the civil rights of all segments of society is a hallmark of democracy. As the White Paper notes, “the right to freedom of worship is a cherished constitutional right” in Nigeria that must be protected. We encourage the people and the government of Nigeria to support these fundamental principles, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or region.

What about all the black people being killed by police in America and they are given paid leave. TALK ABOUT HYPOCRITES
Literature › Re: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Lashes Out At Donald Trump And Americans In Her Article by quickly: 1:02pm On Dec 10, 2016
Divepen1:
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
On December 2 The NewYorker published an article by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie , the Author of three Novels, which intricately requests that people should open their eyes to racism and feminism. She expressed her anger at the way the Americans treated Obama during his time as the President. Below is the full article.
NOW IS THE TIME TO TALK ABOUT WHAT WE ARE ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT
"America has always been aspirational to me. Even when I chafed at its hypocrisies, it somehow always seemed sure, a nation that knew what it was doing, refreshingly free of that anything-can-happen existential uncertainty so familiar to developing nations. But no longer. The election of Donald Trump has flattened the poetry in America’s founding philosophy: the country born from an idea of freedom is to be governed by an unstable, stubbornly uninformed, authoritarian demagogue. And in response to this there are people living in visceral fear, people anxiously trying to discern policy from bluster, and people kowtowing as though to a new king. Things that were recently pushed to the corners of America’s political space—overt racism, glaring misogyny, anti-intellectualism—are once again creeping to the center.
Now is the time to resist the slightest extension in the boundaries of what is right and just. Now is the time to speak up and to wear as a badge of honor the opprobrium of bigots. Now is the time to confront the weak core at the heart of America’s addiction to optimism; it allows too little room for resilience, and too much for fragility. Hazy visions of “healing” and “not becoming the hate we hate” sound dangerously like appeasement. The responsibility to forge unity belongs not to the denigrated but to the denigrators. The premise for empathy has to be equal humanity; it is an injustice to demand that the maligned identify with those who question their humanity.
America loves winners, but victory does not absolve. Victory, especially a slender one decided by a few thousand votes in a handful of states, does not guarantee respect. Nobody automatically deserves deference on ascending to the leadership of any country. American journalists know this only too well when reporting on foreign leaders—their default mode with Africans, for instance, is nearly always barely concealed disdain. President Obama endured disrespect from all quarters. By far the most egregious insult directed toward him, the racist movement tamely termed “birtherism,” was championed by Trump.
Yet, a day after the election, I heard a journalist on the radio speak of the vitriol between Obama and Trump. No, the vitriol was Trump’s. Now is the time to burn false equivalencies forever. Pretending that both sides of an issue are equal when they are not is not “balanced” journalism; it is a fairy tale—and, unlike most fairy tales, a disingenuous one.
Now is the time to refuse the blurring of memory. Each mention of “gridlock” under Obama must be wrought in truth: that “gridlock” was a deliberate and systematic refusal of the Republican Congress to work with him. Now is the time to call things what they actually are, because language can illuminate truth as much as it can obfuscate it. Now is the time to forge new words. “Alt-right” is benign. “White-supremacist right” is more accurate.
Now is the time to talk about what we are actually talking about. “Climate contrarian” obfuscates. “Climate-change denier” does not. And because climate change is scientific fact, not opinion, this matters.
Now is the time to discard that carefulness that too closely resembles a lack of conviction. The election is not a “simple racism story,” because no racism story is ever a “simple” racism story, in which grinning evil people wearing white burn crosses in yards. A racism story is complicated, but it is still a racism story, and it is worth parsing. Now is not the time to tiptoe around historical references. Recalling Nazism is not extreme; it is the astute response of those who know that history gives both context and warning.
Now is the time to recalibrate the default assumptions of American political discourse. Identity politics is not the sole preserve of minority voters. This election is a reminder that identity politics in America is a white invention: it was the basis of segregation. The denial of civil rights to black Americans had at its core the idea that a black American should not be allowed to vote because that black American was not white. The endless questioning, before the election of Obama, about America’s “readiness” for a black President was a reaction to white identity politics. Yet “identity politics” has come to be associated with minorities, and often with a patronizing undercurrent, as though to refer to nonwhite people motivated by an irrational herd instinct. White Americans have practiced identity politics since the inception of America, but it is now laid bare, impossible to evade.
Now is the time for the media, on the left and right, to educate and inform. To be nimble and alert, clear-eyed and skeptical, active rather than reactive. To make clear choices about what truly matters.
Now is the time to put the idea of the “liberal bubble” to rest. The reality of American tribalism is that different groups all live in bubbles. Now is the time to acknowledge the ways in which Democrats have condescended to the white working class—and to acknowledge that Trump condescends to it by selling it fantasies. Now is the time to remember that there are working-class Americans who are not white and who have suffered the same deprivations and are equally worthy of news profiles. Now is the time to remember that “women” does not equal white women. “Women” must mean all women.
Now is the time to elevate the art of questioning. Is the only valid resentment in America that of white males? If we are to be sympathetic to the idea that economic anxieties lead to questionable decisions, does this apply to all groups? Who exactly are the élite?
Now is the time to frame the questions differently. If everything remained the same, and Hillary Clinton were a man, would she still engender an overheated, outsized hostility? Would a woman who behaved exactly like Trump be elected? Now is the time to stop suggesting that sexism was absent in the election because white women did not overwhelmingly vote for Clinton. Misogyny is not the sole preserve of men.
The case for women is not that they are inherently better or more moral. It is that they are half of humanity and should have the same opportunities—and be judged according to the same standards—as the other half. Clinton was expected to be perfect, according to contradictory standards, in an election that became a referendum on her likability.
Now is the time to ask why America is far behind many other countries (see: Rwanda) in its representation of women in politics. Now is the time to explore mainstream attitudes toward women’s ambition, to ponder to what extent the ordinary political calculations that all politicians make translate as moral failures when we see them in women. Clinton’s careful calibration was read as deviousness. But would a male politician who is carefully calibrated—Mitt Romney, for example—merely read as carefully calibrated?
Now is the time to be precise about the meanings of words. Trump saying “They let you do it” about assaulting women does not imply consent, because consent is what happens before an act.
Now is the time to remember that, in a wave of dark populism sweeping the West, there are alternative forms. Bernie Sanders’s message did not scapegoat the vulnerable. Obama rode a populist wave before his first election, one marked by a remarkable inclusiveness. Now is the time to counter lies with facts, repeatedly and unflaggingly, while also proclaiming the greater truths: of our equal humanity, of decency, of compassion. Every precious ideal must be reiterated, every obvious argument made, because an ugly idea left unchallenged begins to turn the color of normal. It does not have to be like this.

What do you think.

No Mr. Soyinka, you are the troll

I read Soyinka's latest rants "WOLEXIT" first published by Sahara Reporters in response to clamour from Nigerians online for him to stick to his earlier vow of destroying his American Green Card if Donald Trump won and I must say I was really appalled not with Wole Soyinka but for myself having held any respect for this man over the years.

In his self grandiose delusions, Soyinka took us on an unnecessary voyage down memory lane recalling all his travels and immigration brouhas since his student years detailing his dissatisfaction and self blacklisting of several other countries which out of both ongoing political and personal grieviances with their immigration services requirement (Australia) imposed a self ban on visiting those countries fortunate not to have the fraud arrive their shores.

It didn't just stop there. Wole Soyinka had the audacity to state that when he made that vow to destroy his American Green Card, he made it among civilized and fellow educated people in far away US and not for the pesky trolls of nigerian cyberspace. How pompous can this man be?

Wole will round up his rants directing those same dismissed Nigerian "Internet trolls" to get an education stating that people like myself who demanded that he keep his word major problems' was ignorance and lack of education.

Well Mr, Wole Soyinka, it appears that you pointless rants in WOLEXIT was actually directed to those same "uneducated Nigerian Internet trolls" who kept reminding you to do the honorable action of keeping to your words. Your civilized oyinbo compatriots in whose midst you made that vow, will not ask you to follow up on your promise to destroy your green card but you can bet they will be observing and taking notes on your lack of credibility on living up to your own words.

As a Nigerian, I expect some one of your age and (dubious) academic background to at least do the honorable thing instead of directing all your frustration on your fellow Nigerians who you have deemed trolls. And for your info, it is widely regarded on the Internet as a golden rule never to respond to trolls. But in your latest rants, you angst seem to be towards those trolls as you never bothered to even address the fundamental issue which was for you to keep to your vow.

For the accusation and generalization of all of us who demanded you keep to your own words, to which you described us as "uneducated", I believe the last election has proven who really the uneducated buffon is and that happens to be you because in your aproko cheerleading of Hilary Clinton you forgot to factor critical political indices other than useless MSM churned bullsh1t polls. The same MSMs which you based your confidence to vow to destroy your green card if the inevitable Trump presidency arises has since began apologizing for their bias and lack of objective reporting.

Also, you termed us "busybodies" who should mind our business as you never made that vow to we "uneducated trolls" in Nigeria, I wondered then Wetin come concern you with US election? Last I checked you are not an American citizen or even remotely a politician back in Nigeria so wetin come be your own? Who gave you the sole right to comment on American affairs? To even add to your level of aprokoism, you were the lone voice from Nigeria to make a self committing statement over the likelihood of the American elections? No be over aproko be that?

I also want to let you know Mr Soyinka that your fellow oyibos who vowed to do whatever demeaning act if Trump won have begun keeping up to their words. See the CNN pollster who vowed to eat bugs on live TV if Trump won. Well he has lived up to his own words.

Foreign Affairs › Burka Hijab Must Be Banned In Germany – Merkel by quickly(op): 5:39pm On Dec 06, 2016
Muslim full-face veils should be banned in Germany “wherever it is legally possible,” Chancellor Angela Merkel told delegates at the , adding that German law “takes precedence” over the Islamic code of Sharia.

“The full-face veil must be banned wherever it is legally possible,” Merkel said at the two-day party congress held in the western German town of Essen. She was presenting her political program and also launched her bid for another term as CDU leader and German chancellor.

She went on to call “security and order, justice and law” some of the pillars of the CDU’s political agenda, and stressed that “all Germans who always lived here as well as those who just arrived” should observe the law.

“Here in Germany … the laws of our country… are applied equally to everyone without any exception,” the chancellor stressed. There should be no parallel societies, Merkel added, emphasizing that “German law takes precedence over Sharia.”

The chancellor also promised that she would do her best to avoid a recurrence of the 2015 refugee crisis. “We have repeatedly stated that that situation that occurred in late summer, 2015, cannot, should not, and will not be repeated,” she told party delegates.

Merkel also assured the CDU members that “not everyone out of the 890,000 people who came here last year can and will stay.” At the same time, she said that every refugee case should be regarded as an isolated instance “and not as a part of some crowd.”

She also defended the refugee deal between the EU and Turkey that has provoked controversy in Europe. This agreement remains “decisive” for successful reconciliation of the refugee crisis, the chancellor said, stressing that the deal “saves lives every day.”

Merkel criticized other European countries for not doing enough to resolve the refugee crisis. She said she is not satisfied with the level of cooperation between the EU members in dealing with the challenge, and called for “more solidarity” within the bloc.

Only whole nation can say who ‘the people’ are – Merkel

In her congress speech, the chancellor also sharply criticized the various anti-immigrant, anti-Islamist and right-wing populist movements that have gained traction in Germany amid the refugee crisis.

Merkel said she had “an impression that it is those who live in Germany for a long time who urgently need to attend some integration courses,” rather than the migrants. She also called on everyone in the country to make an effort and reach “a certain level of culture of discussion.”

She particularly slammed “aggressiveness” and “hate messages” posted online, adding that the internet “must not become a space free of legal regulation.”

Merkel went on to condemn the aspirations of some anti-immigrant movements to act as the “representatives of the German people.” She particularly attacked the ‘We are the people!’ slogan used by the German ‘anti-Islamization’ movement Pegida (Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West).

“It is only the whole nation that can decide who ‘the people’ are. We all decide it and not some marginal groups, irrespective of how vocal they are,” Merkel said.

Merkel first officially announced her decision to run for a fourth term as chancellor at a meeting of the CDU presidency in late November.

At the time, she said that having spent 11 years in office she “knows for sure what to do next,” and promised to “wage an election campaign that would be absolutely different from all previous ones.”

Merkel was re-elected as CDU leader and a candidate for the chancellery at the congress on Tuesday with 89.5 percent of the delegate votes, German media report.

Broader public support for Merkel is also evident, according to a survey conducted by the Emnid Institute for Bild newspaper in November. About 55 percent of Germans are supportive of her bid for a fourth term, the poll showed.

Merkel has been the leader of the CDU since 2000 and has held the post of chancellor for 11 years. If she succeeds in 2017, she will find herself in the company of the two leaders that have held power for the longest periods in the history of modern Germany – CDU co-founder Konrad Adenauer, and Helmut Kohl.

Adenauer was in power for 14 years, while Kohl led Germany for 16 years.

Merkel’s bid to remain chancellor comes as Germany continues to face a refugee crisis. Germany witnessed a massive influx of approximately 900,000 refugees in 2015, with up to 300,000 expected to arrive this year, according to Frank-Jurgen Weise, head of the country’s migration agency (BAMF).

The inflow of asylum seekers has sparked a surge of anti-immigrant sentiment in German society, allowing right-wing populist forces to gain popularity and forcing the government to toughen its refugee policy.

In late November, Merkel announced that up to 100,000 rejected asylum seekers would be returned from Germany to their home countries by the end of the year.

Look at Kenya.. there Earnings is 50% agric another 50% tourism with a GDP of 53.4 billion dollars

Look at ethopia..there earning from agric is 80% with a GDP 103.1 billion

Etc.. all this non oil producing african countries are doing so well when the oil prices goes down. Oil will continue to go down as it can be made from organic and inorganic ways.

Blue3k:
Why does everyone think agriculture is way forward. Manufacturing and industrialization way forward. I don't think Nigeria imports that much food except a few staples like rice, grapes and other little thing. What we really import is machinery, manufactured parts etc. Food isn't actually that high on list.

https://www.nairaland.com/3496315/agriculture-not-way-foward-industrialization
Most african countries survive with earnings from 60% agriculture. Nigeria needs to be food and energy independent which means our agric industry can provide most food without buying outside. Also enetgy independent means crude in nigeria is processed and used in nigeria first... PMS etc and not just exporting crude that is slavery

No problem as far he has great agenda grin grin grin

The difference between both is too much...

- No pastor predicted Trump victory ask Joshua
- Trump is christian / Dangote is muslim
- Trump has more than 500 companies / Dangote is monopoly-based, enjoying government support
- Trump net worth is in $ / Dangote is =N=
- Trump is American/ Dangote is Nigerian
- Trump is 70 years + / Dangote is in his 60s
- Trump's tax receipts can buy all Dangote's companies outside Nigeria
- Trump does not demand forex from Reserve Bank / Dangote books forex from CBN every year
- Trump would protect America's national assets / Dangote would sell Nigeria's national assets

The difference is indeed clear shocked shocked shocked
which national assests. All assests are privatized . Nigeria needs to sell its national assests or else they will suffer.

Even UK sold Gatwick airport to a Nigerian

Look at Nitel a former national assest that was sold and it was not even as effective as mobile phones.

National assests are good but they become liability in the long run.

I agree completely with this sub, ission.

We need a detribalised military man to take over, suspend the 1999 constitution and balance things up in this country.

I have been wondering if this type of democracy in plcae is what we really need in this country.

I think we should should fashion a model that will work for us.
Miltary is Meant for security. Can you put a Miltary man as head of business. When he does not have appitude for buisness.

That is way older generation did and we ate still paying for it.

The last two presidents in buhari and obj were men with over 30 years of Miltary service.

Yaradua come from Miltary family.

What we need are non politicans

If Nigerians Don't Hold Politicians Accountable . We will be in the same place.

We need technocrats. ..if u look well u will find out that most of the ppm ruling are t he most power hungry and greedy.

I have heard of at least 5 -6 members of this government who have empty skull based on their . academic background. Even president name F9 parallel, how can that person reason And interprete data.

To prosper Nigeria needs to be energy independent no more importing of pms we need to be exporting more of pms and less of crude.

We need to be power independent to the extent that we can supply to neighboring countries

We need to develop maintenance culture

We also need to revisit all the trade deals we have signed with different countries and cancel the one that does not pay us.

we need to PUNISH seriously Politicians who steal even one naira. That is what China did they killed many corrupt Politicians. Do your research it's not brain surgery

we need the brightest and the best not this buhari a tiku or oban sango crap.

EVER SINCE THE ARABS INVADED EGYPT THEY HAVE BEEN INFILITRATING AFRICA VIA RELIGION. GRABBING LAND INCH BY INCH AND THERE CULTURE WILL SUPERCEDE YOUR CULTURE . LOOK AT THE NORTH, THEY HAVE VIRTUALLY NO CULTURE BUT ARAB CULTURE.

EVENTUALLY WHEN THEY GET TO MAJORITY THERE BABARITY INCREASES.

DO YOU KNOW THAT SYRIA WAS A CHRISTIAN LAND. YOU REMEBER DAMASCUS (PAUL OF DAMASCUS) ONE OF THE IMPORTANT LANDS. THEY EVENTUALLY INVADED THE LAND AND THEM KILL ALL NON MUSLIMS AND THEN START KILLING THEMSELVES.

LOOK AT SYRIA TODAY, WHAT OF AFGHANISTAN, SOMALI AND LOOK AT BORNO STATE.

THEY USE THERE OIL MONEY TO SPONSOR TERRORISM AND THEY ARE MOVING GRADUALLY. THEY COME TO AFRICA BECAUSE AFRICA HAVE LOW IQ AND CANNOT GO TO CHINA.

NOW EUROPE IS WAKING UP AND SEEING THERE DEMONIC WAYS.

Stop lying .. terrorists get there inspiration from Quran and Islam has itself to blame. look at what is going on in the North of Nigeria. That region export beggers and suicide bombers.

And also make no mistake only Russia can destroy the whole islam with one Nuclear bomb centered in Saudi Arabia, kabba. The whole of middle east will vanish in an hour

That shows you don't have a clue about what you are talking about. All Americans born in or outside of America have inalienable rights. So speak about something else. We have a Black President who happens to be the son of an African man who came to US for education. So with your vacuous mind, only whites are real Americans. Sorry for your black Uncle Sam behind.
People always forget Obama mother was white.
