Who trains the primary school teachers?

The Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Sonny Echono, listed reasons for the continuous establishment of universities despite opposition from members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Echono who gave the reason in a chat with newsmen at the weekend during the second anniversary of the Federal University of Health Science, Otukpo, Benue State.

Echono who recently retired as a permanent secretary before his appointment said that the establishment of more universities was in response to demand.

He said: “If you want to address a problem, address it from the root by mere stopping establishment of new institutions because you want concentration on existing universities while it sounds as a good idea you have forgotten the other problems that millions of Nigerians are being born and millions are applying for admission and places are few.

“Then more and more will be denied access to education so what are you going to do you are going to have many illiterates. So what are you going to do we must balance it and must continue to establish new universities in response to the demand.

“That is why if you notice in the last few years we are only establishing specialised institutions of human needs.

On the salary of University lecturers, Echono described as shameful the take home of Nigerian lecturers.

“On salary to lecturer, I feel ashamed because I have the privilege to represent Nigeria at a global conference where former presidents and prime ministers were in attendance. I was asked if it was true that a professor after 20 years still earn less than a thousand dollar a month I couldn’t answer that question I only said that we are doing something about it.”

The Executive Secretary of TETfund, however, said that 65,000 scholars had benefitted from the staff development of varsity lecturers.

He said: “We also undertake staff development, to help scholars who were employed to undertake higher qualifications, so we sponsored them for Masters, PhD and even post-doctoral program we have trained more than 65,000 scholars as at last year.

“We have students at home and abroad and our current impetus is to focus on our first-generation universities and specialised universities,” Echono said.

I stated that I know the poster's intention might be to use the derogatory word to attract Obi's haters. Why are people quoting me and telling me the same thing as if I myself do not know it? Why would you quote me only to repeat what I already said in the comment? The fact is the caption is wrong. Not even the word "Irony" can be used to defend the caption. Irony is not used in captioning news. Check everywhere. The problem is most people who post things on social media know nothing about media ethics. The caption of this post is derogatory on Obi. Only bloggers that know nothing about media practice phrase captions like this poster. No radio station, tv station, magazine, newspaper or a certified blogger will phrase a caption like this.

But I sincerely apologize for saying the poster is insane. I should have just given the correction without the negative remark. To the poster, your caption is very wrong but does not make you insane. Forgive me.

There is something called Media Ethics. Learn it. What you did is wrong and has no justification. The caption of a media content is more consequential than the body of the content. I already gave you an example.

The last time I checked though, your "media ethics" is not among the ethics outlined by Seun for nairalanders. Besides, the word bitter was intentionally put in inverted commas for a reason.

We travelled to Nawfia in 2010 for our psychiatric posting all the way from UNTH Enugu. Following all the sweat and hassle (including the slap �) I received due to accommodation challenges as the class representative, I just wanted a way to make subsequent groups not to experience same fate.

Miraculously, Peter Obi (the then Anambra state governor) scheduled a visit to the hospital within the period of our 6 weeks stay. As the class rep, I was going to present a speech. The higher ops in the hospital and The Who is whos all came to tell me things I should request ”because Peter Obi listened more to students �”.. In all they mentioned, they didn’t say anything about a hostel for visiting students.

Well, when I was invited to speak, he (PO) didn’t give me the luxury of time to read the BS that was printed on the paper I had. He asked me just one question that even in my sleep, I can still vividly recall (because how many 20 year olds are privileged to talk with the governor ☺️☺️☺️☺️)..

Peter Obi: Are you the small girl that is class rep for these big big people �. (I giggled shyly)… Then he said “Tell me what is the most important thing that will benefit students coming here for posting)?

Me: H.E, We NEED A STUDENT’S HOSTEL.

Peter Obi: Now I see why you were made the class rep. Even though you know that you will not benefit from the hostel having gotten to the end of our posting in few days, you still considered it priority for the sake of others. I want to make you a firm promise that the hostel will be commenced and seen to completion in the shortest possible time.

Men and brethren, that promise was upheld even when I moved on and forgot about it. Peter Obi erected that student hostel in National Psychiatric Hospital Nawfia.

Peter Obi’s agenda is very very personal!!!!!! I will not stick out my neck for someone that has queried competence. As a matter of fact, I had decided to steer clear of Nigerian politics indefinitely. But PO’s candidacy is not one I should stand on the sidelines for.
Both my mouth and money will enter it. If we succeed , good for Nigeria! If not, God knows we tried.

On Peter Obi’s supposed ‘Stinginess’....

Sometime in 2009, ‘Mr’(as he preferred to be addressed) Peter Obi, Governor Of Anambra State at the time, visited Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and myself at Dallas, Texas. He came to deliver a get well message from Dr Goodluck Jonathan and was billed to attend a black tie event at the Dallas Marriot.
Curiously, he flew into Dallas airport with one small carry on luggage which he insisted on wheeling around himself, and on getting to our residence requested to freshen up. He opened his carry on, filled with files and paperwork and a few toiletries and an extra shirt, when the Ikemba and I asked if he was expecting another item of luggage, and he said no.
‘Then, what will you be wearing to the event tonight?’, we inquired. It was at that point that it struck him that he couldn’t show up in his casuals at such a ceremony.

I insisted on taking him to the luxury men’s emporium at Nieman Marcus to buy a smart black suit. When we got there, he was busy doing the Dollar to Naira currency conversions. The suit that was a perfect match for him was a dapper Tom Ford suit with a price tag of 3,985 dollars plus tax. He did the calculations and told me ‘Do you know how many students this amount of money can train in Nigeria?’ I reminded him that he was the governor as well as the special guest, and for the caliber of guests expected at that evening’s occasion, including the mayor, senators and captains of conglomerates amongst others, he needed to be dressed in top form.

To cut the story short, he refused to pay what he termed ’that outrageous price’ for the Tom Ford suit and that was how we ended up at Steinmart where he agreed to pay a more acceptable price of 220 dollars, tax inclusive, for a basic men’s suit which he was happy to wear to that evening’s event.

What struck me, was that as we were on the way to the airport to see him off for his return flight back to Nigeria, he reached for his pocket where he brought out an envelope of crisp hundred dollar bills. The amount in the envelope was 3,800 dollars.
He said ‘ Anyanwu, this is the balance of the money I would have paid for the ‘Ford’ suit. If the label on the suit was ‘Peter Obi’, I am wondering if anybody in America will pay that amount for it. I have deducted the amount we paid for that suit we eventually bought. Please use this balance for your Charity foundation to help those in actual need. I trust you will do so’. We all laughed heartily. Vintage Peter Obi !

The eventual beneficiaries of that Largese were Madam Theresa Agbo, a yam seller who became penniless and displaced when her Yam shed was gutted by fire, Callistus Egbe who was bedridden due to illness, and needed help with the school fees of his young children, and the Mgbemena family of six who were thrown out of their one room accommodation (which we subsequently doubled to two rooms) because their breadwinner fell upon hard times and could no longer afford the rent.

In Life, You either live by your creed or you desecrate the mould by which the Almighty created you. Any progressive nation measures an individual by his values, not his vaults.
If this way of life is what is derided as ‘stinginess’ on the part of Peter Obi, then we all need to adopt this mould for a more sustainable and more humane environment.

This is not intended to judge or condemn you, but to tell you the truth so the truth would make you free.

Being a former pastor, you should already know that the thief never comes to a man except to steal, kill and destroy him.

You already know what happened to mankind in the beginning when they chose to believe the lies of the devil instead of the Truth of God. It was the worst single decision mankind ever made, as humanity is yet grappling with the damning repercussions of such actions up til this very day.

I don't have any qualms with you resigning from your position in Winners' Chapel over poor treatment from your superiors there. You're not the first to do so, as many Winner's Chapel pastors have also complained about similar issues, including some pastors who were sacked not too long ago, to show it's indeed an area of concern the leaders of the church need to look into.

But turning from a pastor to a babalawo because some voices you knew very well were of the devil, were speaking to you and telling you that you're a babalawo by design? Haba!

You ought to know better than that!

You aren't the first person the devil would tell such lies to and you wouldn't be the last.

A neighbor of mine had suffered much more than you in the hands of the devil. She almost died herself on several occasions because of demonic attacks. They also tried to kill her newborn son.

She was told severally, that she was supposed to take the place of her late dad who was an occultist even though he repented before his death.

Once, on her way back from market last year, inside a commercial bus, they appeared and started talking to her from behind that she'd be fine and promised her many things, if she accepts to become one of them, but she still rejected their offer and told them, "NO"!

She knew that even though she was yet suffering, that it would be like moving from frying pan to fire considering what happened to her dad at the end, so she held firm.

Today, she's already reaping the rewards of her decision to reject Satan, as God healed and delivered her, and has begun to use her to serve the real purpose of her life, after she's started taking her spiritual life more seriously, which is to draw men to Himself.

It's not been easy and straightforward because the devil would always try to frustrate and discourage anyone who decides to serve God's purpose for her life, but God has proven Himself faithful and strong to her that she's grateful to Him and also encouraging others to do same.

So gentleman, you made a big mistake to fall for the lies of the devil about you.

You're not a Babalawo by design. It's a lie from the pit of hell, because you're meant to serve God with your life not the devil.

Do not be deceived by how things might seem presently because, trust me, you're surely going to regret this your decision at some point. I hope it's not too late for you to correct it by then though.

Come back to God while you still can because God still loves you.

I'd be praying for you meanwhile.
