Hello people. Quick question please.

I did short landing last year and returned to Nigeria after 3 weeks. Still working in Nigeria whilst working on some stuff to return before the end of this year.

Do I need to file taxes by end of April this year like every other PR despite not working in Canny during the tax year?

My Landing Story
We left for Calgary through Ethiopian Airlines on Monday the 28th of January. I had shipped our foodstuff on Saturday through the SAHCOL contact that was shared on this thread, it cost N110k for 93kg - my food stuff and bag was about 45kg, their extra packaging increased the total weight to 93 kg.
We got to the airport in good time, it was rowdy as ever and we finally weighed our 5 checked in luggage (they let even the 24kg bags pass) and we passed through immigrations easily because my 23 month old was just smiling at everyone we met.
We boarded the aircraft and to my disappointment, it was full. We got to Addis, Dublin and finally Toronto. Overall, I did not enjoy the flights because I had an almost 2 year old (he clocked 2 on the 1st of Feb) strapped to us all the time. My husband and I took turns carrying him. Although he slept all through the journey, he was uncomfortable as well. We were seated at the window and middle seats so it was not easy to use the loo every now and then. I had my own battle too, morning sickness. All these did not allow me to enjoy the in-flight entertainment to the fullest. The food…I did not understand it…lol.
We got to Toronto at 7:30am but were trapped in the aircraft for over an hour because there was no parking space for our aircraft. It snowed heavily the day before so it disrupted their activities. When we eventually got out, we proceeded to immigration and funnily they asked me to show our pof. I think the officer wanted to be sure we still had our funds as we got our COPR since June 2018, I don’t know. Thankfully few days before we left, someone advised on this thread that we should have proof of our pof if we do not have all the funds upon landing. I requested for an e-copy of my January statement after reading that post. The statement from my phone and the $7,700 USD cash we had on us was what we showed the officer and we were fine. After immigration, service Canada and newcomer center was a breeze. We finished at 11 am and were so sure we would get a connecting flight to Calgary. We picked our luggage and went to Air Canada and they asked us to go to Ethiopian Airlines to reschedule us when we got there, they said the bad weather had affected flights and the next flight to Calgary was at 9 pm. Hmmm, we asked them to put us on that flight. I reached out to our Airbnb host and told her we might get home at 1 am and she said that was okay. We found a spot to sit and wait for our 9 pm flight.
I pitied my boy but he was holding strong. I almost ran out of food for him. He slept, played etc. So my husband went to check in our bags and he met a good Samaritan who agreed to put us on standby for the 4 pm flight to Calgary, just in case someone doesn’t show up or something. We eventually got on that now 5pm flight and we were just grateful. However, the flight departed late and we still got to Calgary at 12:30 am. We hired a taxi at the airport for about $50 to our Airbnb apartment and just slept off hungry and tired at about 1:30 am.
Later that day, we went to the core shopping mall, we googled for nearby malls, we got our phone lines, met a nice Nigerian who agreed to babysit our son the next day so we could get stuff done. So far we have met VERY NICE Nigerians, unfortunately, none of them is on this Nairaland thread because I always ask them if they were..lol. We have not done much because of the weather and our very active toddler and my health but we have established networks that could help us get things done easily. We went to RCCG City of David NE on Sunday and met wonderful people who have volunteered to help us get an apartment. We have also met with a settlement counselor at immigrant services who I now consider a friend. We have been blessed with good people since we came.
Our cargo got to Calgary 3 days after we landed and we cleared it with customs (the guy drilled me sha) I filled my goods to follow form at the spot as I hadn’t filled it earlier. When we eventually got our goods we saw they tore our hard earned N2k Ghana-must-go (bagco) bags beyond repair all in the name my “searching”…lol. We paid a terminal fee of $94, my palm oil was still intact, thank God.
Our priority now, apart from completing our heath card registration and child benefits application and other paperwork for newly landed immigrants, is to get a daycare for our toddler, get a job for hubby and I and to get an apartment of course. So far we have got our phone lines, opened our accounts and applied for GST. It has been really expensive commuting by Uber as we are yet to get our bus pass. All that will be sorted this week though.
We are optimistic that everything will fall in place one step at a time, with God.

Congratulations on your successful landing.

Just curious...what sort of food were contained in the cargoed items?

Hello everyone.

Has anyone been able to rent an apartment before arrival? How did you go about it especially with stringent conditions of landlords?

Airbnb is overbooked for the period I'm arriving and the few available ones are so pricey.

Location: GTA

Pls help

Sometime it's okay to admit you don't know what the question is or simply just "jump and pass". And I don't mean that as an insult. As a Postdoctoral fellow myself, I struggled with the question of how to navigate my academic career in Canada and was on the verge of ditching academia. However, I have made tremendous progress over the last six months and I will share some tips and advice at the appropriate time as I am very busy at the moment. I just don't want you discouraging people, that's what compelled me to post this snippet.

@iamforcanada, dudade, and other prospective researchers in the house. I'd be sure to mention you when I get around to posting a detailed response.

Cheers and good luck to everyone.

The operative word is 'keen' not impossible. I know a few people who have gone through the academia path too and I considered it but it is a longer path.

What are the possible alternative non academic careers for PhD holders in Canada - not medical doctors ?

Canada is not keen on degrees but skills and certification. Your skills and professional background can guide you to know what Canadian certifications to go for.

Seniors,

Please help with this quick one.

Where gives the best exchange rate cash from CAD$ to USD. Will it be the banks or airport. Abeg help a brother minimize his losses.

Thank you in advance.

Foreign currency exchange BDCs in big malls always have far better rates than banks.

But the amount you are changing determines if it's worth the trip. Difference may be up to $0.06 which is big if you're changing thousands

So I got the golden mail today after a wait period of 5 months and 23 days. Truly it is not a journey for the faint-hearted. I have been worried, scared, tired, hopeful, hopeless and even prepared my mind for the worst ... I would come to this thread to give myself hope and stay away sometimes not to get my hopes up...

Where I wan start, na the IELTS abi na international police clearance...abi na WES wahala...then I got to NA2, got moved to LVO and stayed there forever. Let me also say over the last few days I got a few mails from LVO, also ADR and I got super worried.

A big thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey so far.....and more importantly I give God all the glory.

And where have I made it a "big deal"? I only made an observation seeing as I genuinely thought it was mighty gracious of her. Also, you are actually making my point because as you say she "sees it differently"; that was the exact crux of my original comment. So what are you on about again?

Cheers!

Abeg, rude is rude! No need trying to explain it away. One can easily say what they need to say without being outrightly condescending. It is utterly unnecessary for anyone to belittle others in their bid to give subjective counsel. But anyway like I said in my initial post, she is very nice!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not for rudeness.

My point was that the person who the post was directed at is not complaining and probably sees it differently hence the "thank you". And if its not a big deal to her, no one should make it a big deal.

Some people see things differently and appreciate blunt tough-love type of feedback even when it appears rude. Its all perception.

On a different note you guys should pls share job search experiences in the GTA..I was planning on landing in GTA but the cost of living especially rent is scary....I hear that 80% of migrants land in GTA so the number of newly landed job seekers out-numbers the "plenty job opportunities". I also hear the growing asian community have mastered the art of networking and have driven wage levels to the barest minimum because they use lower wages as a bait for employers...so someone in alberta or sask on the same job will probably earn more than you do even though they have a lower minimum wage.

Landed seniors please share your Toronto experiences.

There are a lot of good contributors in this thread and when Ballerz was banned the thread did not close down.

@justwise I think some things need to be looked at in perspective before applying stiff sanctions. I don't post much but I visit this page multiple times daily. Ballerz is the only NL member I have contacted off the forum and I can't even begin to say how much knowledge and information I have gained from him both on province decisions and our line of profession. One thing he is NOT is a fraudster or someone with criminal intent. He has never solicited anything from me rather he takes his time to respond to personal mails even at odd hours.

It is not his loss but NL members' loss if he leaves this forum with his wealth of knowledge. The guy has nothing to lose he is already in Canada working with his PR.

I hope I have not broken any IMPLIED rule with this post.

Nothing is guaranteed in life. Bridging programs though helps in learning alot about the canadian work culture, building resumes or building professional networks in your field, some would even send you to local college to obtain certificates that could be 8 months long free of charge plus stipends, much still depends on preparation, luck, favour or fate or whatever you want to call it.

In my opinion, they are definetly worth it since it is at no cost to you. Some are even competitive to get on. e.g CCIS programs in Calgary. They could receive over 200 applications for 20 spots in some of their programs. You would go through series of tests and interviews.

Just like you, I know lots of people that still returned to schools after bridging programs. I also know some that returned to survival jobs after bridging programs, and I also know some that got good jobs after bridging programs. There are also some that never made use of them as well and still got good jobs.

To each his own. I personally prefer getting Canadian qualification if you have the time or money. A bridging program may not give you the highly coveted canadian education and some co-op programs could give up to 1 year of paid work experience.

Thanks for your honest feedback.

Has anyone gotten an internship placement through career edge with a non-canadian educational qualification? How did it go and what was the pay like?

Happy new year to everyone here....
I would appreciate some advise from experienced PR.
I plan to relocate sometime July this year with my 5 year old daughter ..but I'm torn between 2 choices.......
1) Go first, settle and have her join me before the expiration of her medical
2) Go with her in July......

I understand its challenging relocating and more so with a child....but I'm not sure what to do.

Also, which is more advisable and more profitable in the long run

A Bridging program or a Co-op program? I'm into Administration and HR field

I would really appreciate sincere advise from residents in Canada.

Thank you

Happy New Year peeps. I'm also interested in feedback on the bolded in HR. I know a few people who have done bridging programs and one eventually still enroĺled for a college graduate certificate with co op/practicuum component. But people really don't let you into details when you ask. Are bridging programs truly worth it? How much impact does it have on one's resume and job search?

Please see this article/opinion copied from Quora. It contains a lot of key points and nuggets about how to settle down professionally in Canada. Please note again, it was copied from Quora https://www.quora.com/Why-do-so-many-skilled-immigrants-complain-that-they-do-not-get-jobs-in-Canada

That eye contact thing...I once learnt in an OB class that, culturally in the US, not making eye contact means you are lying..so by default a recruiter would think you are lying at an nterview....meanwhile in Nigeria you would appear forward and confrontational...these are the real issues- CULTURE.

Hi all, I've been following this thread now for a while, cos I'm also planning to try the express entry, but one thing holding me back is my health issues, which requires frequent management and I was made to understand that if one has health issue that will cause excessive demands on the country then such application will be rejected, but I was also made to understand there's a way round it, i.e. If you can prove that you won't cause excessive demands on the country or also that there are some provinces that such is not an issue, please I will appreciate if experts here can clarify for me how to go round this, also which provinces can I try where my health won't be excessive demand, thanks a lot

Someone mentioned in the fsw thread that he had a condition and he mentioned it and he still passed medicals but we don't know the details.

I would advise you inquire anonymously from all possible places ie IRCC twitter handle, canadavisa blog. You obviously have to state what the medical condition is for an objective opinion . It would be painful for you to spend so much money and time and then be declined at medicals stage.

Boss,

Not that bad though.

Although some jobs (some bank roles, some front desk roles etc) do require it. In the real sense, there as much bilingual jobs as usual one language job. You just have to search for that which suits you. You might also want to pick up a bit of french along the way (Dont be like me, I never even start french course sef).

If you are the type that don't shy away from all kinds of job, then you should be good.

Let me point out here just like our seniors have been saying, some jobs require certification ( So if you intend to continue with your line of work or switch to a job and if these require certification etc,) be kind enough to yourself to acquire them. It wont kill you but will help you in the long run.

Also, if you get a job (and perhaps it aint in your line of work or it is just to make body and soul meet until a better one comes), please do it with all your heart. Recommendations go a long way here from what I have seen so far and this helps you build your network.

PS:
I never start work, so I might be wrong.

Thanks for your honest feedback.

That's new! I thought the infrared headphones cut across all centers. So what happens when people murmur or make a noise and you miss out on a part? Do they rewind? cheesy
