PBundles: Though I understand his argument, its not based on economics, like most of the comments on this forum. Doing what feels right is not alwys correct. The Nairas values has already been valued on the parellel market and just because you dont want to devalue it doesnt mean much.
Yes he is correct we are a net importing country so there would be an some adverse affect, but on the whole it would certainly ease tensions and render some positives. Does he also realise that he is indirectly subsidsing the difference. What he is speaking about we are a long way from getting there, because we never stimulated it and frankly there is no more funds to stimulate these activities especially now that thet government themselves are running short due to the collapse of oil. Also when this picks ups as he says, exporting, how will the rate help exporters? IT WONT. So they need to make a choice, you cant eat you cake and have it.
Does he realise that it will lead to back door transactions (any dollar distributed will find its way to the black market as they can gain on the difference).
Either you say NO dvaluation, restriction of dollars leaving and transactions, no exportation of goods that are needed in the country, stop of ALL products being imported for a period of say 2-3 years, now we are talking. Painful, but a chance to succeed. Thing is our entire economy is dependent on import, form fertilizer to the oil we export, we import refined back..............so good luck with that. This is simply an delay of execution. The prisioner that has been sentenced to death will die, no mater how many times the delay it. The delay is what is most painful, just get the damn thing over with so ppl know what they are dealing with. Exactly in sorts. Buhari says we export nothing and import everything. Then he adopts and hugs a policy that favours importers and punishes exporters. This is baffling. Adopts a policy that promotes corruption in currency round tripping. Adopts a policy that de-industrializes. Adopts a policy that discourages influx of investment. Just so that he won't look bad to the people he governs. With all the goodwill and great political capital gained at election it is so disappointing that we cannot bite the bullet and get it right once and for all. |

ojesymsym: Make una leave that guy. Everybody de form economist now a days. If he is truly in d us and brings that cash into Nigerian, he would have to use the bank which means he will be changing it at 199naira CBN rate. Any attempt to carry it as hand language becomes money laundering and could be forfeited. Some people de make me laff. If he has that fund really he can make money now by helping people pay things like school fees in d us while parents pay into his naira account t in Nigeria at an exchange rate higher than CBN rate and slightly lower Dan market rate. So when he comes in with his dollars he should sell to you at 199. When he is going back he should buy from you at 380. See yourself. Can you see why those with dollars will not bring it in: individuals, companies, investors; and those who can get it at 380 will buy up as much dollars and take it out in anticipation of further falls in the naira. We are getting to a point where 'currency trading' is becoming MORE PROFITABLE' than actual production. In 1984 Buhari did same thing. Along the line importers had to get special permits to get fx from the CBN. It led to the infamous scandals and cartels and the trading of permits became more profitable than the goods themselves similar to the fuel marketing cartels of the GEJ era. |

At least you have taken a position so your credibility will be hinged on it when (not if) you eventually do. By the time oil prices begin to rise again in 2018 there won't be much of an economy left to exploit it. Venezuela is a 3rd world country, lightly industrialized and largely dependent on imports. They devalued two weeks ago when every commodity became essential and productivity ground to a halt. We are well on our way there.
We don't produce much and export little. You admit that but your task is to change the scenario NOT DEFEND THE STATUS QUO. Your body language proves you are an establishment figure running systems that have kept us in the same spot for decades.
Free market is the only way Nigeria can diversify her economy. The government is too small, too broke, too weak and certainly not enlightened enough to feed, clothe, educate, secure and develop this nation. Let the people determine what they will import, produce, export. Hands off the economy. |

Saifullah01: MAN should realise that PMB is trying to optimise the utility of our current reserves subject to a constraint of falling oil prices and unlimited 'raw materials' to be put on that list. So my advice is this:
As unauthodox as it may seem this is a time for Nigeria to boost its local industries. This is like a protectionist regime imposed by the government for local manufacturing to take advantage of by governments refusial to devalue.
I was in kaduna yesterday and met with one of sokoto state government officials, he told me he was coming back from inoson motors HQ to discuss the possibility of supplying 800 sedans to the state government (and am very sure other states are looking towards that direction too). My fear is does inoson motors have the capacity to service this sudden interest in their motors. So rather than MAN complain on government FX policies they should encourage their members to seize the opportunity. I expect inoson motors to drag CBN top officials to their plant - just like dangote did to his refinery - and secure commitment from the CBN to prioritise them if they choose to request FX for expansion of operations.
I read an article once in the Harvard business review about international businesses in China, the author was complaining about how it takes more than 6 months to obtain a 1 year business permit in China! (You think that was just because of bureaucracy? ). That was their government delibrately protecting local companies from foreign competitors. Little wonder Chinese companies are number 1 in all sector of their economy.
And those that feel devaluation provides some sort of silver bullet, if we devalue then what?
Devaluation is meant to reduce the pressure on governments scarce dollar reserves by freeing it up for "other purposes". But by banning non essential items (call controlled devaluation) government has effectively freed up FX for essential purpose or "other purposes" like importation of raw materials and spare parts for local manufacturing. So let's not get it twisted, devaluation of the naira won't bring down the price the perfume (Montale - black auod) I coughed out 39k naira to buy online to 19k naira. Oga stop this thing you are talking. If you go to market and they tell you there is an Innoson sedan officially sold for 1 million under lock and key due to scarcity and the same model goes for 2 million, won't you cry out especially when some of your fellow competing taxi drivers are getting it for 1 million. It is only free market that makes for competition that increases productivity and drives down prices. No one will invest and those inside will opt out if this skewed monetary regime is maintained. |

Dollarchap: Devaluation of currency cannot in any way help our economy. Nigerian economy is import driven. Until we shift our focus from oil and begin to export non-oil products and still maintain positive balance of payments, devaluation will continue to kill our economy. I think the problem is that our government considered only our external reserves when they devalued the currency. But what of the other macro economic variables? Government should please reverse this policy for the sake of small and medium scale enterprises. That is what you chaps said about fuel subsidy. That it cannot be removed. Then you threw away 5 trillion naira then removed it anyway. Slow in thought, wasteful in acts, reprobate people condemned to suffering and slavery to Shell Petroleum. Don't devalue na. The black market. The real market has no respect for the CBN because the real economy is NOT controlled by the CBN. Devaluation or floating your currency is the only way to regain control. |

Abeg go siddon. Do you need power to farm, to raise the chicken you are importing. Do you need power to mix cement and build your roads and bridges. Nigeria doesn't need all these high-wire industries to develop. It is the basics that build economies and it is the lack of basics that destroy. Our biggest import bill is fuel, then food. Two things we have potentials and should produce abundantly if we can restructure and be hardworking. Your quest for electricity is just a lazy excuse. The average youth uses the little power available to charge phones to chat. Electricity has not benefitted most and 24hr power will not make a millionaire out of a sloth. How do I know this. The price of electricity has gone up and people are shouting. A productive person will not because he can easily swap costs. A industrious exporter will desire a devaluation to enable him remain in the game despite rising costs. |

But to think of it, 1N to $1 is not necessarily an economic advantage especially if we want to boost exports in the future. Read the OP. Don't mind these senseless people. Top exporting countries like China and Japan struggle to keep their currencies WEAKER than set levels so as to make their goods competitive. Productivity and market share is the key. Foolish Nigerians struggle to keep their currency strong and so cannot attract or sustain productivity thoughtless of exports. Devaluation is not the destination but the key to killing wanton importation and inflation only affects unproductive lazy bones. Productivity is the counter to inflation. Nigerians are just to lazy mentally and physically but they love good things. The result is either poverty or theft. Two things in abundance here. Tell me why Buhari doesn't want to devalue and I will tell you that he is protecting his constituency, people of low productivity but of high taste. Sorry for this country. |

Properties › Re: Building On Swamp, How Do I Go, Raft Or Pile? by Reference(m): 6:06pm On Feb 19, 2016 |
The soil conditions described are too vague toarrive at a precise recommendation but if the choice is strictly between rafts and piles I would score it 3:1 in favour of 'short bored piles'.
Goal No 1 for piles: Rafts act the way boats do on water. Vertical stability is achieved by a balance between the surface exposed to the soil and the mass being displaced. The problem arises like a boat when the centre of gravity moves, is in-equidistant or far from the point of contact (as in a tall building). Rafts donot offer much horizontal or rotational resistance. You are building 2 storeys, most residential buildings are notorious for eccentric loads. Piles offer better all round resistance in everything but a bungalow.
Goal No. 2 for piles: Volume of materials and works required for rafts: concrete, rebar, shuttering/shoring, dewatering is far in excess of those required for piles for the same loads and soil condition simply because the efficiency of the raft is proportional to its 'spread' (size). Not absolutely true for piles.
Goal No. 3 for piles: Due to financial limitations you wish to place your foundations in stages. Well, without expensive dewatering regimes you may not be able to do it with a raft, You will have structural and water proofing issues as well since the integrity of a raft requires monolithic assembly. Piles on the other hand can be instaled piecemeal.
Goal No. 1 for rafts: In practice, piles are much more technical. They require proper and detailed soil analysis and engineering design. Their construction requires machinery and tolerances are small. In other words it is either done properly or avoided. When they fail the results are catastrophic. They are less forgiving than rafts. |
