My father always tell me stories of how he used to travel to the U.S in the 80s and the Naira was stronger than the dollar. I used to think it was one of the fairy tales parents tell e.g like how they always came first in class but the one day they came 2nd, they almost committed suicide cuz their parents would've killed them. Anyway, he went on to say back then, Nigerians only traveled to US to do business, school or vacation. My father said the white man used to beg Nigerians to come to America cuz our currency was so powerful and they needed the tourism money. Nigerians never really liked travelling abroad, for what? Our economy was booming, our currency was very strong, the middle class was thriving. There was still that belief that children will grow up to surpass their parents in wealth and achievements. It's sad to see that once beautiful country with so much potential going down the drain fast while the rest of the world is excelling. $1 is now over N300. My Ghanaian friends sometimes tease me that it's cheaper to burn a pile of naira notes than buy firewood. Is this what we have become? A laughing stock? A country that produces nothing? I don't know about you but I miss the Nigeria of the 60s-80s and I certainly miss a stronger Naira.
A stronger naira only favours imports and importers. The stronger the naira the cheaper the goods imported whether they are raw materials or finished goods. Devalue your currency and imported tomatoes will become expensive, people will return to the farm and in suffient numbers the price of local tomatoes will go down again.

What Buhari is saying by refusing devaluation is that he does not have hope that the average Nigerian will abandon costly imported goods for cheaper ones be it fuel, cars, chicken, fish or furniture. He doesn't trust our intellect, fortitude and capacity to be a productive people. That is why he has kicked the can down to another administration. The worst thing is that most Nigerians instead of saying, yes we can, are saying, Mr. President. We have no hope of doing things for ourselves. Infact we give up and wait for oil prices to rise again....slavery.

All we Need is a party for the youths...
Hmmm....by the time that emerges you won't be a youth no more. Nigerian politics is currently like a dog chasing its tail, hopeless. My best formula remains a two horse race. The APC v The PDP. What Nnamani and co are doing is symptomatic of Nigeria and Nigerians. They quit to be relevant as individuals rather than fight for the building of institutions. What is wrong in campaigning and fighting till your ideals are realized within your party first. Must every political quest be for high office. See their mouths. If the party has lost focus can't they refocus it whether they be in APC or the PDP.

Take for instance the latest news of the doubtful N5000 stipend earlier promised. Though I support the President on not going down that line but one would expect dissenting voices opposed to his proposals leading to healthy, non derogratory, non abusive, non vindictive open debate even within the APC.

Nobody knows it all or has it all. It is only by brush and paint a canvas is made a masterpiece. Our politicians must learn the art of interaction, negotiation and horse trading to build stability.

A new party is not a sign of maturity neither is it the road to civil liberty.

U ppl should stop saying centuries for God sake, the church itself is almost becoming a a failed institution. My aunt wedded in this church abt 6 years ago with 7 months pregnancy and she wore white, I guess it was because her husband was so rich or maybe the rule has those it was meant for separately. And what d hell is 30k paid for wedding fee for? Hmm, most churches are money making institutions now. SMH for some ministers of God as they claim. And I don't see the above case as for nication, haba,2 months after trad wedding. How many of u will keep to that, tell urselves d truth.
You've struck the key here. '...how many of you will wait 2 months after traditional wedding' ....before making babies. What this means by extension is that God and His church are just an appendage to your life and ways. If it be so, let it be so in totality. Then why go to God again crying for approval since His church doesn't matter....whx? is it because it is 'traditional' to close 'the case' in church 'wearing white'? Man and his rebellious ways. To most God means nothing so let them leave Him alone. Afterall He is western.

You're a church go-er.There is a difference between a church go-er and a Christian.
Don't you people always see the contradiction in your arguments? You do not want to recognise the church and it's standards yet you still want to come to the church for your program? It's like a young man who says to hell with university education and yet attacks UTME for not giving him admission.
Not everyone has gotten married in Church and you don't have to.If you say you are married traditionally, then why do you still bother with church?Isn't that an irony?
Exactly. You want God in your own image rather than the other way around. The Christianity of these times is one that justifies everything and anything a man does. Now God is subject to her traditions and her traditional institutions. The old testament God will have buried them alive. Now with Jesus people feel anything goes because Jesus keeps on pleading for mercy for us.

Jamean:
Now, what is fornication?
Sexual intercourse between a man and woman who are not married to each other.

Are the couple above married? Yes they are, in fact very married by the virtue of their traditional wedding 2 months ago.

What is right and what is wrong?

Church wedding is not written anywhere in the Bible, it's only a western culture that is fastly becoming Christian doctrine and binding people in extremism.

The wedding at Cana in the Bible was a traditional wedding, that of Jacob to Leah and later Rebecca were also traditional weddings et al. What is the aim? to honor the family of the bride as she is not Oduduwa that came from the sky neither did the Pastor or Priest give birth to her.

You can go inquire from the holy spirit, the moment a man pays a woman's dowry and fulfill all other requirements as stated by tradition or family the law against fornication is suspended in the spiritual realm for them.

As much as I am a Christian and believer, I frown at the fact that the church still considers a couple who has done only traditional marriage as not befitting to have sex. I have seen a couple wait for 5years after traditional wedding and leaving apart because they couldn't afford church wedding yet. I beg to differ; aren't they married.

I don't believe there's any negative consequence of not doing church wedding as I believe it's only to honor religion and for proper Christian home building counseling prior to the wedding. It's worse that these days they now add Sunday for thanksgiving.

1 Cor 10:23 All things are lawful [that is, morally legitimate, permissible], but not all things are beneficial or
advantageous. What is the benefit of Church wedding as you can still be counseled without ceremony?

People will justify this act by saying they werenot forced to do church wedding. Let's learn to deal with things from the root and not surface level.

The church is going too extreme, and the moment a thin line isn't drawn we move from reverence to Idolatry.

Believers should add knowledge to their zeal.
Always bending things to suit themselves. But you will not quote the part where it says you are under authority to those God will hold accountable. You are right. Nothing in life is compulsory, even things of God.

Stop promoting fornication
It is not compulsory to get married in church.Noone will force you to.If you decide to get married in church then you ought to do the right thing. You ought to know (and should know) that pregnancy is not allowed so why bring the pregnancy there?
Have you traditional marriage and go to the registry,chikena..
What is it about women, God/church things, perceived discrimination and the quest to change, disobey, undermine or rebel against rules and authority. You say the church is wrong to put garment before humanity but here you are putting garment before church, marraige and humanity. Why are most women so bogged down by their mentality and are serious slaves to themselves.

The Abuja - Lokoja highway was conceptualized during the Abacha era and handled by half a dozen 'contractors. That road is 300 odd kilometres long or 300,000 metres. You can easily get an army of 300,000 idle youth in the shadow of that road to each deliver a section 1 metre wide by 20 metres across in 24 hours; grade, fill, compact and lay; if you provide the materials. That project has been on-going for 20 years without end. This is how infrastructure was started in China in the 70's. This is how some less well off provinces in South East Asia tiger on today. Governance is not hard.

The men should dig the drains, pave the roads and climb the poles. The women should mix the mortar, till the land and milk the cows. That is how great nations are built. Anything else is an illusion. You will never have a strong economy if you franchise all production. You can never be independent if you are unwilling to work. The choice is ours. Buhari must devalue our currency to slam the door on 'foreign tastes' and to reboot our mentality. There is no better opportunity than now to develop. Once oil prices rise there goes our future once again.

Nigeria does not need devaluation right now. Formulate good fiscal policies first, enforce them, then we can better modulate and weigh the benefits of devaluation. Right now, I can only see devaluation as a bad move if enforced.

We don't need an economic summit. Too many cooks spoil the broth. We need a formidable economic team set up by Buhari. Then the team will also have consultants with independent input that is ratified by the team before it is infused into a fiscal policy.

That is exactly what Canada did. That is what Saudi Arabia is currently doing. That is the strategy of World Bank/IMF.

-Lord
The consultants you look for are looking for consultants to heip them. Have you heard anyone speak. Devaluation is not to make things better but to induce coma into the economy while surgery takes place. As long as the dollar remains artificially cheap viz productivity, get it from me. NO ONE WILL MAKE ANYTHING WORTHWHILE THEY CAN BUY. Production is HARD. Devaluation acclimatizes you to that hardship to enable you operate meaningfully. Japan, Germany, the US, Great Britain all went through a period of devaluation and inflation after the second world war. Mexico did so less than a decade ago. They didn't die. Buhari is kicking the can down the road and you are hailing. He is 72. Fewer years than you in this sewer. Enjoy.

Devaluation is a really tricky subject, especially when there are no real complementary policies & strategies. Nigeria has been devaluing the Naira from less than N1/$ to the current rate of N198/$ and yet there has been no real economic benefit to the country.
---
The biggest beneficiary of devaluation will be government, since they control 95% of what we export (oil). Ordinary Nigerians will be the worst victims since almost every item in the country has some import component. The fact that the president has rejected devaluation, even though it would have been a very easy avenue for him to generate money to fund his budget shows he really thinks about the masses.
---
I think an economic summit where there is a robust discussion on the best economic strategy for the country would be most ideal.
Oga. It is the biggest victims, the people that will diversify the economy not government. Was Nollywood government creation. I am done talking about this issue. Let him not devalue and set the course of this country's economy aright. Rather be waiting for the chicken while the chicken is waiting for the egg. Devaluation is for diversified developed economies abi. Don't worry, miracle will get us there.

We will be in the mud till oil prices rise again, build our reserves and waste it and suffer again by 2023 or so. But develop? For where. That is for sensible nations run by real leaders.

Managing the finances of a family is not a joke. I think at least one person has to be stingy otherwise you will run into problems. Being "stingy" I think is the most important trait of rich people who make their money legitimately. They save money and invest in productive assets. It is a different thing when you can steal public money or kidnap etc and spend money anyhow but if you work hard Then either you or your wife, one of you at least must be prudent though others may call you stingy. One of the things I have observed is poor people spend more than rich people and that is why many are poor

Mr. President cannot just see that availability is more important than rate and it is better to keep industries and businesses running albeit at a higher cost. With less revenue from oil, the shortfall should be made up by taxes. Pray me. Who will tax, the unemployed, the empty warehouses or the padlocks on the gates of closed industries. Nigeria has entered into a viscious cycle of decay that Buhari will not be able to pull out from.
