Wike should stop these inflammatory remarks and de-escalate the situation. If there is a crises his tenure will not run smoothly and his legacy will be tarnished. The APC is not in power in Rivers State. He and his party are and cannot afford distractions. We have seen at the Federal level that the benefit is always given to the opposition and the incumbent must work extra hard and remain focused to stand a chance of surviving politically in Nigeria these days. Wike ought to know and ought to do better.

Good idea but there's a slight problem with this, parents would start giving birth to more children just to get more money from the government.
Thank you. Subsidies in Nigeria merely worsen the system, be it fuel, import forex or free food. We just don't have the character and capacity to develop.

Actually Obasanjo did not sell the refinery for scrap. He sold 51% of it for around $250 million dollars with the government still retaining a 49% stake. Silly daft Nigerians screamed blue murder and called on Yar'adua to reverse it. Now, I doubt if we can find anyone to buy the entire thing for $10 million
Hahahaha....you will. The market is hot All you need is the environment of free market. Government needs to just hands off. If the government wants to drill oil, fine. But refine? Mbanu. Forty years of failure equals madness if continued. There is no big deal about refineries.

those countries build refineries by themselves. They dont wait for black man to do it for them
If you want grass-roots refineries our unschooled youths are doing it. If you want industrial refining Dangote has taken the bait. The government just has to remove its tattered jersey and don the garb of an umpire. Sell the refineries as they are. The vast majority of Nigerians have been buying gasoline for upwards of 120 naira for close to a year now. This to me is the realistic price and enough incentive to build private enterprise. It can only get better.

This is a whole lot of baloney!

1. We do not consume 40 million litres a day --- smuggling things.

2. If the refineries are configured at 50% PMS output, you will be getting 35-36 million litres of PMS (445,00 BARRELS=71 MILLION LITRES), and not 20 million litres. First time I'm hearing 50% PMS output . . . are you sure Kachikwu?

3. Problems are meant to be fixed; fix it -- we need solutions, not excuses.

4. Refined petroleum products accounts for roughly 40% of our forex demands -- it kills the Naira than anything else -- so, on the long run, is importation really cheaper?

5. Until we stop importation of refined products, I don't see any bright future for this country.

6. Have the oil cabals gotten to you sir?
Na. Reality has gotten to him....sure wish it could get to you. A change of President is not a change of basic fundamentals of free market. Nigerians are capitalist by nature. Government should know this and exploit it.

Only new refineries can change the story, those 4 refineries are outdated, no point refurbishing scrap.

The govt should get partners who can site new refineries on the same spot the old ones are.
I see. After sinking gazzillions into refurbishment since 1990. Kai. Nigerians. And I'm sure your recommendation will be that the government should build new ones abi.huh

Do you know how many bank branches are not opening today. Do you know how many MTN masts are not functioning today. You don't, because they are so many. That is the power of private enterprise. If we had privatised the NNPC in 1983 when Buhari was last in government (no political pun intended) some 33 years ago, I bet we will have had no less than a dozen refineries working in Nigeria today. I tell you once again. Cement was like this in 1983. I am an adult. Today it is produced in surplus and exported. There is NOTHING SPECIAL about refining crude. The swamp boys are doing it but I have never seen bootleg cement. The problem of scarcity and suffering is the government supported by the people.

True liberty determines the quality of a man's life. And liberty can only be guaranteed through sound knowledge. Nigerians must unshackle themselves from the vestages of colonialism in the south and feudalism in the north and begin to build their country by first knowing how things work. We entrust and overrate so called leadership. In developed societies leaders are FIRST AMONG EQUALS and not having special powers the followers can only dream of attaining. These are not the times of kings, priests and laymen. Every Nigerian must take responsibility to know and to do what is right
Politics › Re: It’s Cheaper To Import Petrol Than Refine Locally — Kachikwu by Reference(m): 6:31am On Mar 15, 2016
Is this not what we have been saying for years when people shout repair refineries. Nigerians are so, so, so slow. I have nothing to say. Absolutely fed up. Privatise the oil industry. They say no. It is only the private sector that can find the competitive edge to survive low crude prices and to exploit properly high crude prices. We sit here and some numbskull will be comparing the NNPC to Petrobras without looking at both under the microscope. Dull citizens.

Which activities? All that is happening in Nigeria is at State level. The Federal government has no budget that is no plans and barely any direction. This is one of the reasons why PDP lost the last election, instead of constructive criticism and genuine objectivity of government inadequacies, they are busy posting the president's shoe on the Internet.

What a shame.

Anybody who knows this Deji guy should tell him Nigerians are more concerned about how the country can move forward rather than his useless rants about Buhari's shoe.

God bless PMB, I bet my April salary that u can never buy this shoe for even a quarter of the price quoted.

Take Deji serious at your own peril. He's an attention seeker.
But that is the problem. If there was anything going on in government there will be issues, policies, programs to talk about. But nothing. One year after inauguration this government is still not up and running. Only the Ministry of Petroleum with its in/out reforms. Why won't idle minds stray. I think the government is so scared of failing that it is not trying. Real pity.

Do you think that is Honest, Patriotic and in-line with Banking Ethics?

Blaming Buhari for the current exchange rate clearly shows you are poorly grounded on simple economics. Buhari,Goodluck or Obama, whoever is in charge of Nigeria at this time of oil crash could not have save the Naira.
The only thing is that ,the external reserve that would have been use to defend the Naira have been squandered by your mentor.
And you too are economically misinformed. Defending the naira simply means subsidizing imports. For how long can you do that in the face of crumbling exports even if you had a gazzillion dollars in reserve.

If I saved all my salary for 5 years and I suddenly took a paycut of 70%. If I can't cut my expenses and can't find another source of income to supplement, I am heading for bankruptcy. China had 500 billion in reserve. It tapped into it for two months, saw how it was going down and devalued (cut expenses) instead. Who is Nigeria with our so called reserves that never reached 60 billion ever.

This was a coal fired power plant. You need coal to be running first before you even re-build the plant. All Jonathan's efforts to revive coal failed because of too much complex commerciality and lack of transparency. We need simple direct intervention with the minimum of noise making
Just do a feasibility study on coal deposits to determine quality and quantity to determine what type of plant is required and where it will be located. This is government's job and should not take more than 6 months.

Get off-the-shelf low power (5 to 10mw) plants from China by selling bonds to the public and advance Transysco to build transmission lines and stations for power evac., massively subsidised by direct labour from the Army Corps of Engineers and graduating youth corpers of engineering qualifications (compulsory). This should not take more than 12 months.

Commission private enterprises to mine, process and transport the coal at a premium to guarantee supply. This should not take more than 6 months.

Supply electricity to dedicated industrial parks ONLY. Not to homes, offices, playgrounds or places of worship so that the power can be sold at a premium to repay bond and attract private sector take over within 2 years....from the day the Minister visited that plant.

Hmmm...do you know whether these 'militants' have long standing trade and defence related pacts with these countries and their counterparts there already. Is it last week militancy started. When these militants transfer massive amounts of resources into neighbouring countries, you think its for nothing.

TBH, I am now convinced beyond reasonable doubt that Nigeria's problems is beyond leadership, but a societal one. Are we just intellectually deficient or chronically prejudiced.
---
This was an interview where the Minister was specifically asked about the exchange rate situation. He tried to explain the factors that influence the rate making reference to oil price. He simply said the SITUATION (exchange rate) was beyond the president since he does not control oil price. He never said the ECONOMY was beyond the President’s control as misrepresented by the media.
---
How the media gets away with such mischief is beyond me. Worse still is the fact that 80% of readers do not even notice this distortion of facts. These are people that will later assume leadership positions. With such shallowness among citizens, the future is even more uncertain.
Good morning sir. How was your night. Looks like you had a few nightmares.
