PressMyButton: Imports of raw materials for production is not the same as import of junks for consumption. Know the difference. Nigeria has been turned to a dumping ground for junks. half of sweets and candy in Nigerian market are imported. Imagine that. We have cocoa, milk, sugar, coffee, coconut, and ginger. These are some of the best candy flavours yet we are importing artificially flavoured junks from around the globe. You wonder why people are malnourished in the midst of fertile ground. |

Paraman: Buhari tried to discourage importation, it didn't end well. It's one of the reason we are where we are now it failed because he was trying to make his region benefit alone. If not so, he would have prioritized making refineries work instead of building rails that will take rice from Niger through katsina to Cotonou. How many aging cocoa trees did they replenish, but look at how serious he was with northern farmers. Even pro actively averting locust plague from north eastern Africa that threatened harvest in the north. |

Seun: The top 3 exporting nations in the world are China, USA, and Germany. They are also the top 3 importing nations. The thinking of "imports bad, exports good" that leads to import substitution policies is primitive and outdated in the global village. India, which does import substitution can't compete which China, which imports & exports. The examples here are hardworking nations who add value to raw materials imported and export as finished goods, and with China having the unique advantage of low labour cost and industrial clusters. Our own case is that of a lazy nation with almost no capacity to add value to raw materials. If not for Dangote and BUA, we will be half as industrialized as we are today. What we call industry is predominantly import repackaging outlets. |

EKONGKING: What is this 4.2 unemployment ,when NBS changed definition to include people who work for just 1 hour a week as employed .
You will always get underemployed people .
Tomorrow , if North Korean leader changes definition that any worker who worked for a hour in his life as employed , North Korea will be a paradise like Nigeria .
I pity Kim Jong Un advisors ,when he hears that a black African has invented this unique format of unemployment ,which his advisors could not .
So i join my fellow Nigerians in offering prayers and condolences to Kim advisors .
We all, like being fools in Nigeria . I know it used to be 30 something before. With this demonic definition, you can break melon seed(egusi) for one hour a week and be termed a gainfully employed person. They changed the definition to allow more idle hands become employed, same way we have varying common entrance exam cutoff. Lol. Propaganda** |

You did not read the article.
Singapore does not subsidse fuel...infact they even tax every liter sold, and they refused to reduce the tax recently so the Singaporean refineries are selling to us at a loss. |

Politics › Re: FG Is Still Paying Subsidy In Trillions ... Deny It by RepoMan007: 3:40pm On Feb 03, 2024 |
nairalanda1: Yes they are still paying subsides. (Infact, the OP needn't have done all this calculations. Landing cost in October last year was N720. Highest cost of fuel was N700 In the far North, lowest was N580 around Lagos. Landing cost has gone up since then. NNPC Is obviously being forced to subsidise).
NIgerian governments have always sacrificed good economics on the platform of getting elected.
Anyway, let's see what happens when we begin domestic refining. If prices 'fall' , a subsidy is in place on the refineries.
Either way, Nigeria suffers. You do not sell at a loss, and expect things to work well. We lost 4 refineries because subsidy.
P.S
As calculated by the OP...we may pay 24.6 trillion naira this year for subsidy. Last year it was probably around 10-14 trillion, in 2022 it was 10 trillion. And people come here to bash me for opposing subsides.
GEJ wanted to remove subsides because in 2011, he spent three times more on subsides than in 2010. Tell me, if you were in his shoes, you would even remove it and tell the Occupy NIgeria to keep quiet. if subsidy didn't kill the Singaporean refineries we bought petrol from, how did it kill ours? You and this your ogogoro-logic of reasoning again. I tire for you. |

Govt has to pay it in order to try and feed idle hands indirectly. The structure we maintain is the issue. Grabbing one region's oil and using it to fund religion, military, and enjoyment for six regions means one thing, theft. Stealing arrangement breeds corruption from the top. How do you elect a governor whose main job is to spend diplomatic loot and expect him not to steal for himself? That killed the structure needed for production as many people sought to get a piece of the cake. We have no foundation for productive lifestyle so govt has to try and feed the thieving idlers on public payroll. Have you seen any attempt at clearing rent seekers in Lagos or Anambra from the streets? They help put the govt in position and are best retained than discarded.
We are still playing. |
