pragmatistm: Where are you based? How does the raingun work? Can you show some pictures. I think I'm interested. I planted water melon for over a week now few days after it rained heavily one day but none has germinated because there is no rain. I think it's because of lack of water. That may not be the cause because given the right conditions, your seed was supposed to start sprouting 4days after sowing. Dig up one or more of the seeds to know its condition. BTW, where is the source of your seeds? |

Mercie123: In fact, my brother I got it directly as the cows were dropping it in pile...lol. Yes, that's some joke but really I used it fresh. It's not advisable to use fresh manure from livestocks. The ammonia content will be high and can burn you tender plants. You should at least compost it. The fear of zoonotic diseases is the beginning of sound health. |

Mercie123: I wonder if I'll be able to cope with the conventional way of farming. I just feel sack farming is everything...lol...I know that's myopic but don't blame me, this is my first attempt at farming. I'm thinking herbs and other veggies like lettuce, cabbage, carrot etc later. Do you know about growing strawberry in Nigeria at all?? Once learnt from Pavore9 that it can grow [del]in the cold regions up North[/del] even in hot Sokoto. I've not tried growing it. |

Mercie123: wow!! How'll that be possible for a large volume of soil? In fact, how do you heat the soil It's called heat sterilization. Either you use industrial oven at high temperature or you improvise using coal pot and big pot. Though sterilization has its disadvantages. |

The change in colour may not only be attributed to nutrients deficiency. Like someone mentioned above, check for other possibilities too for better diagnosis. |

Mercie123: Yes, it's top soil with lots of cow dung. I'll do as you've instructed cos I've always doubted pruning this variety. Thanks again boss. Adding manure in quantities more than that of top soil increases the organic matter content of your bagging mix translating to high water retention capacity. The large moisture volume of the mix leads to root rot. Your bagging mix would have been ideal in dry season not in rainy season. I'll recommend a mix ratio of 40%topsoil, 30%sharp sand and 30%manure for the rainforest and Guinea savanna zones. This recommended mix helps increase porosity, control soil temperature and soil air in wet seasons for sack farming. |

If I understand you correctly, you want to know how I apply fertilizer to the tomatoes.
I think tomato plants have special fertilizers but I've only used cow manure. Sir, since your crop is a short duration vegetable crop, hope you are not applying the cow manure fresh. Composting of fresh manure is necessary to prevent the transmission of zoonotic diseases. |

Although this hutch is innovatively built, one has to consider the space management and financial requirements of putting up such. For example, this spacing can alternatively be used for 2 decking (3 rows) of hutches comfortably. |

Ferraricash: oga hotmas911 Pls can one still plant watermelon by this time, I had the wrong people paid for the set up of the watermelon and honestly I'm regretting it because all was done behind me. Please how can you advice someone who is new in agriculture. Thanks Is the rainfall pattern over there severe, is there a history of plant parasitic nematode infestation over there? If yes, I'll suggest you sow some other crop while waiting for second planting season. Normally, watermelon thrives well under an irrigation system that controls water supply. |
