Another publicity stunt. Aregbesola may turn out not to be better than Oyinlola if this is the kind of cheap stuffs that will be referd to as achievement.
I have seen the stream and it is not even as big as canals in Lagos. The area worked on is less than 1km, so what the fuss?
Politics › Re: Aregbesola Approves N19,001 As Minimum Wage For Osun State Workers by rman: 3:35am On Aug 30, 2011
Don't let us get carried away with this news.
Why allow the workers to go on strike for a whole month in the first place if you can pay more than the 18,500?

What the state government have done may be similar to what Kwara used to deceive its workers. The state will pay the lowest level in the civil service (level1 step1) the 18,500 or 19,001 in this case, and as you move up, that value is no longer used to calculate your salary. So, a level 15 or level 16 personel may actually still be earning something very close to his/her old minimum wage. So level 1 workers salary may become double with this while older and senior staffs may only see a very very small marginal increase in their pay(in kwara's case, it is as low as 5000 naira from level8 above). And Kwara is claiming to be paying the minimum wage. I know the media houses have been trying to make civil servants look bad with their news and programmes in the state(I have seen quite a few). Aregbesola have also been on the lesser hajj(Humrah) for sometime now allowing the strike to linger for too long. I am sure what Osun has done may actually be similar to what we have in Kwara.

By the way, Aregbesola has not struck me as the performing governor that we all read about in the papers. He hasn't really done much since he has been in power. O'YES that we all hear about (20,000 jobs in first 100 days) is a scheme where graduates are employed as cleaners and sweepers of major streets across all the LGA's , that to me is not job creation. If you have ever visited the state , you will see O'YES all over moving in groups in uniforms like corpers. Mind you, the same state has declared all saturdays of the month as sanitation days for three months, rendering the state paralysised on most saturdays between 7am till 9am. That to me is not a fantastic idea for a state that just employed 20,000 new cleaners (O'YES) across all the LGA's.

These are my own little observation since doing bussiness in the state and I don't have any political affiliation.

You don't get my point. I have noticed that a lot of people only point out the spelling mistakes and that's it.

Yes, point out then mistakes, then put up your suggestions or opinion on the matter. If the only thing you have to offer is spelling correction, it is better you just read and do not reply. If we like it or not majority really don not have anything to say objectively on issues raised on nairaland than to come an attack posters. Most times they derail the thread.

And why do you think call centres use ZTE phones ?
Lexusgs430:

Nokia
China phones
Samsung

Sony Ericsson/LG

It's really a very close call between Nokia and China phones. But i think Nokia phones are still a bit more patronized than China phones.
@ Lexus: Most call centre operators use ZTE phones and there are more call centres in Lagos than the number of friends you claim to have. I think ZTE phones are the most widely used.
ZTE is still fall under the CHINA PHONE category. No one knows the number of China brands in the market. It is just safe to put them under the same umbrella(CHINA PHONES).

Show me your friends, and I will tell you the kind of person you are !!!!!
What you should be saying is, most of your friends use chinko phones, 50 % of my friends use Iphones. (before you comment, I have so so many friends ) !!!!
I still find it hard to believe how shallow and ignorant most people on NL are.  . Just so you should know. I am an engr in one of the leading telecoms sevice providers in Nigeria. I have a lot of friends that deal in wholesale and retail of phones. I give people support once in a while on cell phone related issues. I love gadgets so I buy the latest products as they come out most times. I know a lot of above average people in Nigeria and all of them won't touch chinko phones with a 10mile pole. So coming out to say my friends use chinko phones only says a lot about how unexposed you are.
Yes, I repeat, Nigerians use CHINKO phones more than any other product. You can go to computer village to carry out a survey. In less than 4hrs you will be convinced, Mr MY FRIENDS USE IPHONES( Such a shallow mind).
Phones › Re: What Are The Top 5 Cell Phones Used In Nigeria? by rman: 8:00am On Aug 23, 2011
The topic says " TOP 5 CELL PHONES USED IN NIGERIA" not " BEST 5 CELL PHOBES IN NIGERIAN MARKET".  More people use China phones than anyother product. Iphone had no bussiness on anyones list.

Some of the reply of this thread is more appropriate for " Top 5 cell phones I love to use"

OK. I have both etisalat (a very active line) and MTN (a very dormant line). On my etisalat home zone package, its 20k per second to any network. Get that rman? So its actually cheaper for me to call any random mtn line using my etisalat line than for me to call the same random mtn line using my mtn line. How does that sound? Look, like i said earlier, any promo by MTN short of 10kobo per second to any network, I am not interested. So please i tell you to your face, kindly keep your promo to yourself. I do not need it.

When i used to call on my MTN line, it used to cost me about N35 per minute (peak period) to call an mtn line (3 times the etisalat tariff) and N25 to call an mtn line during the off peak period.

From your post, i think you are one big oga (servant) at MTN. so what conclusion can you draw from the revenues accruing to you guys in the first half of yr 2011, 2010 and 2009?
Good! I hope you know that immediately you leave your home zone the call rate changes. MTN to MTN is not N35, not on any of our billing system and packages. Right now mtn to mtn is around N12 per minute and to other networks N15. Which is still within the N5 range I refered to earlier.
The fact that you are anonymous will not allow me say somethings online. But if you know anyone in the telecoms bussiness especially gsm, they will all tell you that revenue from voice calls is not the area to look at if you really want to stay competititve. It is now very very close to its peak in the country and MTN is already one step ahead of the others in what is the in thing in the bussiness now. So your analyis on voice call may be correct but our revenue increased in those years through other streams of income.
Cheers my friend

Ok so because the per second billing happened years ago, its not worthy of mention right? so in your opinion, lets cover it up?

At the emboldened, i am not at all surprised. Such statements are very typical of your boss MTN. So for you, (MTN's servant) to utter such also isnt the least surprising. Imagine telling your customers to go to hell. That you'll survive without them. SMH.

Like boss like servant.
I never told you to go to hell. The simple sentence means, if you choose to hate MTN their is nothing anyone can do about that. People like you hate MTN just because you feel they owe you something. What they owe you personaly, I do not know. Because your case sounds personal. I acknowledge your points on per second billing and I still state that it is bussiness. Immediately competitoin came they adjusted. If you will still refer to what happened in 2002 as your main reason for hating MTN in 2011 then I am sorry, your situation can not be salvaged

@rman

Its interesting to know I hit you so hard, you had to post your defense like 4 or 5 times and in different formats and still couldnt debunk them. I will only add that my pain is that Nigerians have a culture that makes them timid and not act when they should. In countries like Italy and Ghana, people boycotted any network that was not friendly to them. In Nigeria, people pretend and "form" and that gives the networks the edge to do what they like. People actually prefer to buy things at a more expensive rate in Nigeria. For example, Nigeria has about the most expensive hotels in the world with terrible services. It is a cultural problem we have. But some of us will continue to inform the public about their rights and how not to allow themselves to be exploited.

As for MTN, they are creating a lot of bad blood and hatred among Nigerians. You need to see hour people react sometimes when you talk of MTN. They are seen as thieves and exploiters. They may seem to be making money now but they are going to suffer it in the future as it will come to a time when people will be really fed up and the reaction might be very very bad. Number portability is the first step so lets all start to canvass for it.
My friend you did not hit a thing. Iwas only trying to comets on each point you made. It did not come out clear enough in the first two simple. the contents are the same. lol. What bad blood are they creating, they did not put a gun to any customers head. The poer to choose is strictly in your hands. It is just the smear campaign I find hard to understand. It is indeed true,A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion.

Yes fork addict do the price analysis here of the operator you know and compare with MTN. You have not given me any assignment because I have the information.

Your excuses are soooooooooo lame, I will help you by making a few points clear

1. None of us care about Glo or MTN or Etisalat or Airtel. We only care about whats best for us. So whoever gives us the best service and value for money is the one we will go with. I completely agree with you on this.

2. I dont know which positives you say MTN bring. You talk like MTN is doing us a favor. If they havent come in other people will have. They are a business organisation who are being paid for the service they are rendering. They are not a philanthropic organisation. MTN is just doing bussiness just like everyone else, you are right about them not being a philanthropic organisation

3. MTN foundation? you must be joking right? Have you seen how much Bill Gates foundation invests in Africa? MTN foundation my foot. How much have they given back? peanuts! Absolute peanuts! Even the reality shows where they are supposed to give back, they dont even spend money. They run it as a business and the show takes care of itself. Have you seen how much Glo has invested in the entertainment industry and how much Indomie has invested in schools? what have you guys done differently? shiooooo! .
Why compare them to Bill Gates organisation? The objective thing to do is compare them to telecoms operators in the country and what they give back, simple. GLO have invested in the entertainment industry, yes. Maybe that is where your interest is. MTN foundation has equiped hospitals and clinics, they have also sponsored a lot of festivals across different ethnic groups and equip schools. Do your research well. Who wants to be a millionaire is not meant as a give bak programme. Any promo is not meant for give back, Nigerians think promos is meant for give back, NO. Any company that is doing a promo is always making more money out of it eventually. The more reason GLO is not necessarily giving back more tha MTN because they are always doing promos. MTN also currently sponsors the Nigerian soccer league.

4. I have been to SA and Ghana. MTN treats Nigerian customers like trash. Call rates are so low in Ghana that it was better for me to use my Ghana MTN line to call other Nigerian MTN lines when i was back in Nigeria. I mena making a roaming call with my GH line was cheaper than using a Nigerian SIM right here in Naija. Hillarious isnt it?
What you have just said is possible but I find it hard to believe(roaming is with a sim from Ghana is cheaper in Nigerria). Also, it is not fair to compare our call rates to MTN Ghana, The business environment is completely different. Lets compare only with operators in Nigeria, and objectively we will all see, the difference in rate across different services is around 5 NAIRA OR LESS5.

I am fully aware that MTN broke even in less than 2 years. No company breaks even Internationally in 4 to 5 years. MTN broke even in less than 2 years amidst all the cry of no electricity and all. They sold sim cards for as much as 30k that is $200 for a SIM card! They then went on to throw a party in SA. 000099]So this is a crime is bussiness? I have nothing to say to this.

6. Dont tell me about infrastructure because Glo was first to invest in infrastructure (as IIL) but lost out because of the NCC issue. MTN and Econet launched with IIL equipment. Even after starting late, Glo is still the only one with a full national fibre optic backbone on the ground. MTN is just starting to lay theirs after so many years. They just going thru the Ikeja area now. Glo is about to launch an under sea cable. Thats why they are about the best in Internet connectivity along with VISA, ZOOM, Starcomms and a few others. MTN still has one of the worst Internet connections. Ask everywhere.
Common, the worst internet connection in the country? When some of the operators you listed have their traffic riding on our network in some states, hmmm

7. I could go on and on but it isnt necessary. Someone talked of MTN selling more recharge cards. You must be joking. I posted earlier how my brother sent me an MTN N1500 card and it took me a whole day to sell it because everyone i tried to sell to kept telling me they have dropped their MTN or they only use it to receive. I got a Glo card yesterday and sold with the second attempt. In Lagos, Airtel still remains the most stable network. And the most customer friendly.
This depends on the location you are trying to sell your cards. Most dealers sell more of MTN cards till date[/b]

Just to add. have you ever been to an MTN office? Like the one at Okpebi/Allen? That is enough to discourage anyone from using MTN.
I know that office very well, and you didnt state clearly what your problem is with it. Or you hate the fact that it is on opebi/Allen? smh

Permit me to say that you are only trying to sound objective but you aint making a good job of it. This i will prove to you with the following points:

(1) Our major beef against MTn is their greed and unthinkable apathy towards their customers. Granted, they have invested massively in infrastructure. but are you trying to tell us that since all these years of investing, they havent broken even? If not, when do you think they will eventually break even so as to join in the price war? Please bear in mind that they have been in the country the longest. If they havent broken even by now, who else will?

PER SECOND BILLING SAGA: If you have followed MTN thru the years, you dont have to be a genius to understand that they are capitalists to the core. Not that there is anything wrong in being a capitalist, but when you go to any length (even playing on your cutomers' intelligence and lieing to them) all in the name of making the maximum profit possible then that aint capitalism. That is fraud. It is Robberry. it is Extortion and it is immoral. MTN said that Per second billing saga wasnt possible. Glo came and proved them wrong. MTN had to switch to the per second billing cos they realised that if they maintained their evil per minute billing plan, they would be out of business in days. So they most reluctantly switched to the per second plan. Not that they didnt know the per second billing was possible all along, they just prefferred the per minute plan which was suffocating nigerians financially and giving them the maximum possible returns. Now, other networks are slashing prices but they refuse to. You know why? ill tell you:

No doubt, MTN has the highest number of subscribers in Nigeria. Like many people have mentioned here, they have multiple SIMs and out of these multiple sims, they have MTN even though they do not make calls with their MTN sims but they still receive calls on them. This is where the problem lies. It aint enough for us to just stop making calls with your MTN sims we need to also stop receiving calls on them too. For as long as we continue to receive calls from other networks on MTN lines, MTN will be fine. Cos they got a massive subscriber base and funds will always accrue to them via the interconnectivity bullsheet.

My people, if we really want to snuff life out of these monsters called MTN, we need to stop receiving calls on their lines. If yall know anyone with multiple lines and you want to call them, always try to reach them on other lines first as a matter of priority. If all their alternate lines fail to go thru, only then should we call them on their MTN lines. If we can sustain this practice for only a few months, i dare say that MTN will either slash call tarriffs or they will be history.

I guess you are a staff of MTN. Let me give you an assignment. Go to your GROUP FINANCIAL ANALYST (or someone who holds a position which is closely related) and ask him to break down your total revenue for the first 6 months in 2011, 2010 and 2009 into 2 categories. Inbound revenue (that is revenues that accrue due to calls coming in from other networks) and outbound revenue (that is revenues that accrue due to calls originating from MTN to other networks). You will observe that for 2011, the inbound revenue will far outweigh the outbound revenue. Imagine what will happen if people stop receiving calls on their MTN lines.

My people. I apologise for this extremely long post. Na as the matter dey pain me i dey take yarn. make una no vex
All I can deduce from your post is per second billing issue which was years ago, and their price(MTN), which I have asked any objective person or analyst to look at and compare to other opearators in the industry. You have not done that. You just hate the sound of MTN, their is nothing anyone can do about that

Are you kidding me? Are you from another planet?

1. MTN is the only line where sometimes you cannot recharge for 3 days and they dont even apologise
2. MTN has the worst customer service of them all
3. Many times I call with MTN, i hear the wrong person talking in the background
4. Even an NCC report sometime in 2009 showed that MTN had the highest number of drop calls.

You must be an MTN staff

I have used all the networks, including Multilinks, startcomms, Visa. MTN is one of the worst lines out there. I did an experiment travelling from Lagos to Abuja by road. I had MTN, Glo and AIrtel on. Throughout the journey, GLo stayed up the most and only went out for around 45mins all thru the journey. This happened mostly between Auchi and Lokoja area. MTN went out for almost 2 hours and Airtel went out for close to 4 hours. That statistics may have changed a bit now since they all are expanding. But then, Glo had the most spread.

What has made MTN the most used is simply their marketing strategy. They sold lies and hype to Nigerians and used simple psychology on Nigerians. They made people believe that they were the big boys network; i dont know whatever that means. But in a country like Naija, that was a good strategy. Another factor was the constant fight withing Airtel from inception. Airtel (then Econet woreless) was the first network to launch and make calls. But their constant fighting and internall wars slowed them down. Glo would have been the biggest. They were supposed to be among the first 3 netwroks when they bidded as IIL but their bid was rejected because they refused the spectrum NCC gave them because of a fear of litigation. They already had their equipment on the ground and had to sell some of it to MTN and Econet Wireless because the rule said they could not start till another 3 or 5 years or so.

I have people working in MTN and i can tell you they are the most poorly paid. The so called big boys network paying the least. Now they are beginning to outsource their customer service jobs. My brother was in their interview and was told they will be paid N30, 000 to start. I mean 30k for a job in MTN? In 2011? Ridiculous!

Please dont come here and say crap. Many of us here are very aware. I have been to South Africa several times and MTN was a small company there. Nigeria made MTN and they don't give anything back. Even their sponsorship of TV shows that was supposed to be a way to give back, is still a cash cow for them. They make so much from the text messages that are sent to these shows at such ridiculous amounts. I don't really blame them, I blame Nigerians because we are so gullible and full of inferiority complex.
Let me try to reply a few of your questions;
Questions one to four, all for under quality of service and I can tell you the same NCC you are talking about always carry out quarterly checks on all the newtworks and MTN has consistently being the best for years nationwide. People in the industry get this report as a guide and I have seen them so you are only talking based on a one off personal experience.

Let me also state clearly that the operator that have made the most investment in the industry on infrastructure is MTN hence the major reason why they have the most subscribers. I hope we all know that MTEL already has a backbone infrastructure on ground before GSM came and they could still not manage it well. ECONET also lauched GSM in the country before MTN but failed to invest properly like MTN and that is why MTN overtook them in a jiffy. We currently have close to 13000 base stations in the country and 6000+ of this belongs to MTN

.Now fast forward to a few year and other competitors came and only think they can compete through pricing. Nice concept, but where will the money needed for massive investment into their network going to come from if they continue to reduce price in an industry that requires massive investment?

When price war comes like the one we have now, something has to give way. I hope we know that etisalat came into the market with all their technical aspect of the job already outsourced(that is their bussiness strategy). Now AIRTEL has done same, why should MTN be different. A lot of the operators came with the intention of running their operations cheaper. What most of them have done is to reduce salaries or employ new pepple that will do the job for less pay. Call centre jobs is not meant for university graduates (the Nigerian unemployment situation is the reason graduates are used) and since airtel has done it (outsourced their call centre), mtn has followed suit aswell.

Some of the new opearators may not break even in a long time and soon their stategy may backfire when the investors think it is time to stop putting in money. When that happens, they may not be able to deploy latest technonolgy as their main competition(mtn).
If we take a critical look at the pricing of the major operators, we will all clearly see that the difference between a similar service eg sms or a voice call , is not more than 5naira. in most cases it is less. They are all offering the same thing in the same operating environment.

I know a lot of people in the industry both senior and junior staff among all the operators and they all agree that MTN is the only one doing the bussiness right. Unfortunately, customers are only interested in price which puts them in a tight situation most time which also good for Nigerians. I just want people to see that MTN has actually brought a lot of positives to the industry. They employ a lot of people directly or indirectly. MTN foundation is also doing a lot in our community.

MTN is not bad at all, we all have just made up our mind not to see the positives. So sad.

I have taken my time to go through all the posts on this by different Nairalanders on the above issue and I have come to the conclusion that MTN Nigeria Communications Limited is the best network in Nigeria in terms of Network quality, coverage and offers best in class service. However, so many nairalanders have equated these metrix to pricing.

Many of them talk ill about MTN because of their tariff and not necessarily because of their network quality.

Invaribly, what it means is that the other networks, glo, etisalat, airtel do not have what it takes to match MTN in terms of quality of network, coverage and service delivery and have resorted to cheapening their tariff. In real terms, however, you pay more when you compare the down times of the other networks and other hidden charges.

I have decided to stick to MTN because they know what they are doing.
Intelligent observation that should be simple to arrive at if not for SENTIMENTS that majority of Nigerians are full off

mtn should stop livivng in the past. They are not monopoly any more, if they dont wake up soon, they may run out of luck in Nigeria. They are like a giant hole dat sucks up your credit as soon as u make any call. Most people i know use them as answering machine, they started 1minute for every 3 minutes call frm other network, then dumped it, magic number, dumped it. These guys dont even pay their staff as well as other network providers like glo. Shame!!!
You hate MTN so much you even talked about salaries paid to staffs. If you are not employed in the industry then keep shut. Last I checked, MTN still has one of the best if not the best renumeration packages in the industry. Please do a little research before coming on the net to talk about what you don't know

MTN is the worst network because they don't give freebies!
HABA people! If that is the defination of worst network then you all don't know what telecomunications is all of about.
The same NCC you all are shouting about knows they have the best network in the country based on QoS(Quality of service) metrics.

The same way we continue to bash  DSTV knowing fully well that they have the best pay tv service in Nigeria with more Nigerian contents.

In a very competitive sector where the power to choose rest solely with the customers, we all think making sentimental statements about one provider will bring them down while they continue  to do the bussines right.

If their competitors do their bussiness right we don't need to open all this thread, they wil naturally be out of bussiness.

We all prefer MTN , what I hear most times when I see all this MTN bashing threads is '' MTN, BRING YOUR PRICE DOWN AND YOU WILL BE CALLED THE BEST NETWORK IN NIGERIA''.

Pricing is all what this basing of MTN is all about not really about service quality. Although, all service providers in the country still have a lot to do about QoS including MTN.

FYI all, you will all soon get your wish. I JUST HOPE WE WILL APPLY THE SAME ZEAL TO PROMOTING MTN WHEN WE GET OUR WISH, the same way we do in bashing them now.

The president has a point, but you people are not looking at the issue rationally. Most of de govs spend half of term on election and 1st year learning. This will let them have focus on work and time to do it.
You don't have a point. Before you become a leader you should already have plans for what you intend to achieve. Your point is only applicable for those that stumbled into leadership positions.

Again Nigerians have narrowed all issues affecting telecoms in Nigeria to be MTN. All the service providers have issues and only a few (Ajanlekoko) understands what has really happened in the sector. Fix power in the country and half of the quality issues telecoms operators face will disappear. Stop vandalising their installations and they will soon get there.
We should stop deluding ourselves, the telecoms sector has single handedly changed the face of how business is being done in the country. No other sector of the economy have done what they have done with all the challenges they face.
Instead of embarking on a wild goose chase in a sector that is self regualting due to competititon, they should focus on POWER, ROADS, AJAOKUTA and all the other areas that have failed woefully

The title of he thread says '' Best NBA players Born In Africa'' , but it is important to note that making the NBA is not easy at all , so it worthy to recognise players born in Africa that eventually made the NBA. The following Nigerians have played in the NBA or were drafted to play:

1, Olumide Oyedeji: Was drafted by Seatle sonics, played three season with sonics and one with Orlando magic
2, Late Mohammed Acha(RIP): Died the same year he was drafted by spurs in practise. One of the best basketball players to come out of Nigeria
3, Ejike Ugboaja: Was drafted by Cleveland cavaliers. The first Nigerian to be drafted staright from the local league.
4, Julios Nwosu: Played for the toronto raptors
5, Solomon Alabi: Was drafted by the Raptors, plyaed just a few games before he was sent to the nbdl. Still has great prospects of coming back
6, Chukwudi, (dont know his full names) was drafted by Lakers(2011) but sent to Denver on draft day.

It is also worthy to recognise the fact that a guy born and raised in Nigeria is the current GM of Denver Nuggets. That is also a great achievement.

IF you think all engineers in Nigeria are useless, it only tells your own level of exposure. Look closely around you they are doing great things.
