Wake us up when IMF revise their projection. Tanzania economy is in doldrums. First it was around 7.5 - then 7.3 - then 7.0 - last year it went to 6.6 - and the most optimistic are thinking around 6% this year - while IMF think growth will be as low as 4%- the trend is obvious - Magufuli is messing TZ economy. If you factor the Tshs devaluation against USD - then you know their real nominal growth is maybe 1%.

You can argue about IMF & WB somehow conspiring against Magufuli all day - but the tell-tale signs are all over. Tshs continue to deteriorate against USD/Kshs. There is a full-scale capital flight to kenya. Donors are withholding their money.

Magufuli while talking austerity - is also engaged in vanity projects to compete against kenya - like their hopeless electrified railway SGR (funded stupidly by COMMERCIAL LOAN) to nowhere (60% of their cargo terminates at Dar City) and their Air Tanzania that bought Dreamliners - that are now empty - instead of buying smaller Embraer or such short-range jet as they build capacity. Who start an African airliner with dreamliners without capacity.

I can go on and on but we will not agree. In few years Magufuli misadventure will be as apparent as Nyerere FAILED experiment.

As regard, the western world - It obvious Western World like everyone else will bend over depending on the interest. Saudis and likes have tonnes of oil and billions of dollars....everyone will hold their nose and take their money. Africa have nothing - they have to try avoid getting into unnecessary wars with Western world - esp if they depend 20% or more for their budget like Tanzania.

China was as poor as TZ when it had 500M people with so many kids and fewer adults. When China started enforcing the 1-child policy - they started becoming richer. Obviously when you have less kids - it doesn't mean the population doesn't grow - China have added another billion since they enforced 1-child policy - and they've gotten richer. And the reason is obvious - less kids - less mouth to feed - more savings in the banks - and prosperity. Imagine 4 parents (father, mother, grand parents) all focussed on 1 child - Chinese kids are getting the best education money can buy, they are getting huge investments in their names before they turn 18 and will probably afford to buy an apartment before they start working.

If China had not adopted the 1-child policy - they would probably be 3B now - and VERY VERY VERY POOR.

The more kids you have - the less food you have to feed your pregnant women - so you end up with low IQ low weight babies feed on cassava & bananas at birth- and after birth - the many kids don't have enough food- and the physical &mental stunting continues.Therefore at micro-economic level - family level - it's important for one to have less and well-spaced kids - to have be able to feed their pregnant women with essential nutrients - and to raise the kids without any stunting for lack of food or useless food like in Tanzania - and slowly the IQ of the country will improve.

Most African countries are poor post-independence because of it's population growth. Look at Kenya - from 1963 until the Oil boom/doom - Kenya grew at around 7-10% - and would have become developed country like South Korea - except we were also breeding like rats - so all that growth in economy - disappeared - poverty grew - gov became unable to provide basic services. South Koreas meanwhile growing at about the same rate kept their population in check - meaning their per capita kept increasing -families were able to feed, cloth and educate their kids better - gov services didn't become overstretched - families and companies could save money for investments - and slowly they became rich.

Most Africa countries by 1980s knew the population explosion was biggest threat - Not some Western or Eastern power coming to re-colonize Africa - most of them embarked on serious population control.

To have somebody like Magufool in 2020 argue about having more kids is just very sad.

Africa is the most underpopulated continent in the world, DRC is half the size of Europe, so its Europe which is overpopulated, now imagine if our lands reflected its population? We would have strong economic and militaristic powers in Africa, which is exactly why they the west doesn't want Africas population to grow while at the same time making sure that their population grows by taking in migrants and paying their women to have more kids. Living standard doesn't matter, economic power and militaristic power matters. While Botswana has a high living standar(and rising gdp) it will never be able to come up to the economy of that of a bigger population like Nigeria or to its militaristic power. Botswana differiante from the rest of Africa and its neighbouring countries. Botswana was a protectorate and was not colonized by white people and it found its minerals after independence and is one of few african countries with nationalized minerals. The reason Botswana has maintained it success of high living standard is because foreign governments didn't put its mind to infiltrate it successfully and import revolution, poverty and hunger unlike in many other African countries, and Botswana is a story of good leadership. Look at Lybia, it used to have one of the highest living standard in Africa until the west overthrew Gaddafi, now the country is shattered with war, poverty and hunger. Living standard didn't matter as long as they didn't have the capacity to defend themselves, Lybia has 6 million people.

In every continent the countries with the highest populations are the ones with the biggest GDP and Military. The biggest economy in Asia is China(1.3+ bilion people) followed by Japan(120+ million people), India(1.3+ billion people), and Indias economy is rising quickly and will surpass Japan eventually because its still an [b]EMERGING [/b]economy. Indonesia with 260+ million people is rising quickly also and if it remain it stability, the order of Asia top GDP in the future will be China, India and Indonesia. Japans population is declining and they are thinking on taking in more migrants to maintain their economy, just like countries in europe are taking in migrants and paying their women.

In Europe(not counting in trancontinental countries such as Russia and Turkey) German has the highest population(80+ million) and also the highest GDP. It is followed by France and U.K which have the next highest populations(both 65+ million), and the next 2 highest GDP. Italy has the 4th highest population(60 + million) and 4 highest GDP, then spain has the 5th highest population and 5 highest GDP.

In South America its the same, Brazil has highest population and highest GDP, followed by Colombia and Argentina whom also follow the next highest GDP after each other. The same in North America. U.S has the highest population and highest GDP. Mexico has the second highest population(120+) and is a country filled with corruption which creates disfunction to the economy but still it has the third largest GDP after Canada(37+ million), closely behind. It will easily surpass Canada if it gets its act together and become stable.

So i hope you see a pattern now, and see that it shouldn't come as a surprise why Nigeria has the biggest economy in Africa, all while its politically unstable. Also the reason why China will surpas U.S.A economically it thankly due to its high population which gives it a big advantage. China already work as one unit and they can quickly make economic reforms which in U.S takes time.

The reason Nigeria can be deemned as Africas saviour is because of its big population, it has the ability to become Africas superpower and defend Africa and help it develope. But that is only if it get its act together, along with DRC. These two countries can be Africas salvation. I can't emphasize enough how important population growth is for Africa. If Botswana with its current form of stability had the population of Nigeria it would be a world power military and economically. Low population is one of the reason the French colonies are still being looted by France, in Burkina Faso it was the big young population who went together and overthrew the puppet president but it's much harder in Gabon with its low population. The more people you are the more you will demand control of your resources. In the french colonies its not the africans who control the resources but french companies which is why you don't read about african billionaires from these countries. The french president has been going around spreading propaganda that africans are overpopulating the world because it will be harder for them to continue looting Africa with a bigger population who will demand control of their resources.

A country like Botswana would never be able to defend itself from the west because it lacks any kind of power, it just has high living standard. Poverty is a bigger problem in U.S compared to Luxemburg(600 thousand people), Luxemburg has the highest living standards in the world, but unlike U.S, Luxemburg is not a superpower, whether economically or military. Botswana will suffer economically because of its low population just like many europeans are doing right now, it won't be able to mantain its economy and living standard because it will suffer an aging problem faster than the rest of Africa and it will either need to take in migrants to mantain the GDP and living standard or find another way to higher its population.

South Africa is the legacy of apartheid and when the whites took their land the tribes weren't millions and they weren't united, today they have increased their population and are right now fighting together to get back their land because its many of them. In Namibia they are not as vocal because they are a low population. Its much harder for foreigners to come in a country like Nigeria with over 150 million people and control all their resources because the people would ''eventually'' start an uproar, the bigger population you have the more the people are going to demand control of their resources which S.A is demanding right now. The reason Nigeria has one of Africas biggest army is because of its population advantage and it has one of the highest GDP not because it is an economically superpower in Africa, its all due to its big population, because bigger population creates higher GDP since it means more workers. Imagine if Nigeria got its act together politically and lowered it unemployment, it would surpass all European countries economically because it has a population advantage.

Botswana has no power, only high living standard. If the west attacked Africa right now, what power would we have to defend ourselves? Thanks for schooling the illiterate here throwing insults left right and center. Africa IS POOR because WE were always poor. Nearly all Africa countries were equal poor before any europe came and by the time they left - were still very poor. Countries that became better - had to slowly and painstakingly emerge from poverty. They did this mostly by fighting disease, poverty, and ignorance. They did this by sending as many kids to school as possible. By building schools, hospitals and basic infrastructure that was non-existent. They did this by educating Africans on modern agriculture and livestock keeping. Those lucky to get natural resources - embarked on public investment on roads, rails and the works.

And then you've got special case of Nigeria...that seems to be regressing in 2020.

In Africa - Mauritus, Botswana, Namibias and Seychelles enjoy high standard of living - with say a primary school teacher buying a nice little new car on his first employment date.

US or China may be a powerful countries - but who really care about power - when they have so many poor people living in tents or streets - or food aid.

I think kenya has survived by generally separating business from politics. We have also had a diversified economy however small as it was. It therefore very hard to bring kenya down.It easy to bring down countries that depend on sector or two of the economy - both internally (via a coup) or externally.Generally, Kenya politicians have been devoid of ideologues like in TZ - so whatever has been the schism - kenya always found a way to work with US, USSR, China, UK, Isreals, the Arabs and even the Apartheid regime of South Africa - as long as they were into business - their Alexander Forbes or Old Mutual would be welcomed.

Census - is more of planning data - Huduma - is more operational data. Look like we will also get digital number plates, we basically need everything digital - digital police occurrence book, digital listing of criminals and past offenders, digital cameras all over - we already have e-passport- this will help ensure we have transparency and integrity - and will go a long way in fighting corruption and many crimes - and will make life simple and easy for the majority of people who are law abiding.

Imagine a future where you just use your fingerprints on some device - and voila - you're authenticated - and can get private and public sector services - you don't have to carry your national ID. Criminals like our Nigerian brother - you just need to swipe their fingerprint - on crime scene - and voila - you know the criminals - complete with their phone numbers and basic demographic info. This is the game changer - we had manual biometrics that took forever and were impossible to share - but now - we can continue the digital journey with solid Identification system.

While Nigeria typically is unable to even do Census (too broke ) Kenya which already had one of Africa strongest National ID system - just went digital - with completion of Huduma (Service) Number registrations - that not only take and store biometrics digitally (finger prints, pictures) taken - and their documents attached - in national database - that will be used by gov and non-gov for authentication.

Kenya is well ahead on the digital journey. People cannot just learn - it gov to go digital - forcing people to acquire those skills. For instance many gov services are now online - so a lot of people have to open accounts - e-Citizen, TIMS (NTSA), KRA e-filling of tax returns - name it.

I believe the current Huduma number will provide the biometrics needed to finally go fully digital.
