With the number of people on chat every second, if each were to hold down a socket via persistent connection push, there would not be enough sockets on the servers.
Even if they scaled out the hardware for it and were able to accomodate an infinite amount of persistent socket connections, YOU dont have that kind of money or hardware for that right now.

You are absolutely right. But there is a workaround. According to http 1.1 specifications a browser can only open a max of 2 connections to a webserver causing any other connections to be blocked. But we can create a diff hostname as an alias to the chat server. This way we escape that limitation. I believe this is what facebook is doing. Also I know (I have not tried this) that some servers can be tweaked to handle over 100000 TCP connections at a time. This largely depends on the operating system ur server is using. For facebook and their datafarms that's no biggie.

To clarify things, facebook uses realtime data streaming. They employ a technology that very similar to the comet server where connections are held by clients for a very long time and instead of each clients polling the server to check for updates, the server simply 'pushes' any updates to the clients. This way, it can scale to millions of clients just on a single box.last time I checked they use this same technique for their news feed, messages and notifications. The frontend is written in javascripts and the backend is written in java (they were using cassandra. But I don't know abt no sha.).

There is an open source project that does something similar: the ape server. U can dig in the code to know how it works in details.

The truth be told, what u are trying to do is no newbie task at all.

An approach is to create a joomla plugin that gets triggerred after the 'onuserlogin' event. This redirects the user to a module u have prepared for the tests.

Another way is to develop an entire component for the test that get categorised into sections eg english, maths etc. You then make this component the default after user login.

In summary, you have to know a bot about the internals of the cms to pull this off as I don't think there is an existing exetension in the JED that does this out of the box.

Managed vps costs more. why not get an unmanaged vps from linode. I think thier cheapest plan comes with 512mb ram and cost is $20. And it is built with OpenVZ so 512mb is 512mb. you get all you buy fully.

Linode is an american hosting company sha but they accept naira mastercard. No downtime at all and you control everything. I have been using them for 2 yrs now and very happy. Try them and say thank you

it will really help your business if you can post the link to ur website and also links to sites you have done.

the problem is caused by your table name prefix.

1. Delete the database and create it again

2. Go to your local joomla installation and export the tables in the database using phpmyadmin

3. go to phpmyadmin on the remote server and import this tables into the database.

NOTE:

1. check the configuration file "configuration.php" in the root of your joomla install and make sure the field "database_prefix" correlates with what you have in your tables. eg [tableprefix]_tablename.

2. Another cause of this problem is the fact that when you order a shared hosting, cpanel automatically appends ur username against all ur tables and databases. If theis is so, just edit the database prefix in the configuration.php file to match what has been appended to the table names.

chillax man. He only said he uses an IDE, most of them have drag-n-drop functions and one-click functions. for instance u click a button on dreamweaver and then the software creates a table for u.

programming is abt efficiency and speed.

I also program in java and believe me after abt 7 years in the game i cant say that i know all of the classes, interfaces and packages in the java standard library. They are huge. This is minus their methods, variables, whethter public, protetced, private or static. (i believe this is where IDEs come in). If you are just learning, then using notepad is a good idea.

My guy if u program in the real world you will forget notepad. i use notepad to write love letters and if someone ever codes a love letter IDE, i will be more than willing to switch

Everything should work fine until the interpreter gets to the line that contains the header statement.

There you have instructed PHP to forget everything done so far and go straight to "contact.php".

Something tells me you want to redirect the user to the contact page AFTER the mail has been sent which means the header statement should be the LAST line.

Another scenario is that you wanted to INCLUDE the "contact.php" file as an helper class to the current script, in this case you use "REQUIRE" or "INCLUDE" and this statement should be at the very top.

All this is as a result of 'copy and paste'
