Rally of 544% from April of this year till now, without being listed on the floor. I wonder how that would have happened - if there is nothing dodgy.

Wasn't the IPO of DEAP at N2 per share? Why would it be released at N12.88 - all this mago-mago self,
And, people would storm into it - without any detailed fundals or technicals.

Thank God NSE, is doing a big brother role, at least trying.

I placed my NASCON mandate last week Wednesday evening as soon as i heard about the offer with my so called big broker - Zenith Securities.
Only to be told that my mandate did not go through - my other friends in other brokers that i even alerted got something.

I got nada - i would not be surprised, if they are one of the 50 suspended.
InvestmentRe: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by SavvyLanre: 3:27pm On Jun 18, 2007
@Ess

It depends on what you are referring to -
1) Is it based on the one day offer of 400 Million shares at N22, which was oversubscribed
2) The fact that Dangote is basically the owner.
3) The stock has been scarce, which has driven the value of the stock out of the roof, as many investors want to be a part of the profit, since Dangote name is written on it.

Whichever way you look at it - I say Dangote is the reason for it, he is playing in the market very well.
He probably bought NASCON at next to nothing, and ramped up the value of the share - and now sold a 5th of it on Friday, 15th.

Thanks Guys - As i only started investing in Nigeria.
I was clueless - seeing the good result, and then the drop,
I drawed a quick PE, and by my calculation based on Yesterday closing price of N27.55, the PE=19.
Using PE alone for analysis, that bank is currently below the banking sector average which fluctuates around the 25 mark.

I think there is room for it to grow to at least N34 within the next 3months.

BTW - can you guys let me know how the bonus issue affects the trading behaviour in naija; and how one can factor it into decisions, My current biggest stake is in Zenith (1/3 of my current portfolio, if it rises to N60 then it would be 2/5). I need to know how to take good decision, in the event they do not declare a bonus issue.

@ Easimoni & Toyinbanj,

I have an experience with Zenith, and i can say their reports are good.
I have a friend with IBTC, and i have seen some of their reports as well - i would say on par with Zenith report. However, if we are voting, IBTC might win hands down due to the reputation they have already and the wealth of loaded customers they have, And, the Minimum is 10M - except if they have waivers.
BGL, i heard also have good analysts - but i haven't personally seen any of their reports and Minimum is 1M.

If you want to look at some of the middle players, check out Afrinvest - they have a fantastic reports, i was well impressed with the quality and professionalism, Minimum is 500K
Cashcraft, one of my friend had a poor experience with them - and the kind of person i am, you do not have to tell me twice ;-)

All, the stockbroking firm mentioned above have an online presence - and you should be able to choose among those,

A friend of my MD? nice to meet you! i apologize for my inconsistency in this forum.Back to the lad that gave you poor service, i honestly don't dispute that it could happen but i really want to know when exactly that happened, 2 years?3 years? anyways my point is that we can only try to get better and i am convinced that we are getting better, we might not be there yet but you can be rest assured that being grouchy to a client is an issue of the past because we understand who they are and how they should be treated, no matter how annoying they might be.To be very candid, i think you should have escalated the case, how do u think this issues would be addressed if noone is aware of it in the company?
I am sure you have gone for years with a wrong impression about a whole company because of "Mr. Grumpy",
I personally think its unfair the way you quietly worked away.Cash craft seems to look juicy to you and i am not going to try to convince you otherwise but i have just one thing to say and that is you have a relationship with greenwich and your issues could have been easily addressed especially because you already have a relationship.Anyways i guess you know best.

@Nimshi, as regards not anwering to enquiries, we have three main addresses; greenwich@greenwich-trust.com, info@greenwich-trust.com and enquiries@greenwich-trust.com, these mails are automatically forwarded to the officer in charge, and trust me, there are a whole lot of them.I am sure there was a mix up somewhere and i apologize. However, I think it is better to call the office and demand for a staff's email.You could try mine and put me to the test, ope@greenwich-trust.com.

Finally to all the agrieved investors, when you are treated badly by a staff, don't walk away, take it to the next level and report the case to a superior officer before you make your final impression about a house.
@Cupcake
Not trying to bash you or anything - i would just put it as it is. After, reading some of your posts, i found you very credible and know your stuff. I got in touch with you early January and i found you slow to respond and when you did respond the charges were exorbitant, and even my last email, i got no response.
I wasn't surprised what the other fellow in this blog said about your company - an organization behaviour or culture cannot be changed over night, it is probably an element in your process or ways of handling potential customers.
I engaged Afrinvest - which i found very professional, but did not end up opening with them as i preferred the other offers and charges of Zenith Securities.
If i am to make any recommendations, i would definitely recommend Afrinvest before talking about Greenwich.
And a piece of advice to everyone, call around - make your research. It is your money, your fortune, and you should be putting it where you would get the best advice, good customer service and grow your bottomline.

BTW - Zenith minimum is now 5M, i was shocked as i was trying to introduce a friend, I think they are trying to focus on the high end with good professional service.
@Frank - I say you and Windywendy should open a Stockbroking firm, all of us would jump boat :-)

@Frank,
I chase you come here as well :-)

Just a quick question, if you have any advice on it, i already have some shares of FirstBank, from Donkey years ago. And, then i lost the certificate, but we still get mails in the post. But, then no one gets to check the post in the North, since everyone is in Lagos now. (I mean my family).

1) How can i get my hands on the right of issue from Lagos, without having to go to the North for it?

2) Can you do your Right of issue and then the normal offering like everyone else? Seems yes, but i am not sure how that works out.

3) If i want to buy, another family's right of issue in my name. How can one do that?

Abeg, no vex - i know it is a long one.

@pamit and Tmoni

I would say call Zenith securities in Nigeria first, if they have any such ties to get money across like that, i haven't asked myself, probably i would do that on Monday, but my interest is different as it would be from the U.S.A
For example, i realized they are not directly linked with their registrars or the bank itself, probably why it is called Zenith securities limited, But, they have a good in-house relationship, it seems to the public, they want to draw the fine lines.

Pamit in reference to your question, do you mean what they charge for trading? As this is also 1% + SEC and/or NSE fees and then the taxes, which brings it to 2.23%/2.75% depending on if you are purchasing or selling, i think this fee is actually the same for BGL and IBTC.

(PS, i might have made a mistake with the Selling fee, would double check and get back to the house)

can i set up the zenith securities stuff just on the net without face to face contact?
@Tmoni
LOL - I no fit laugh anymore,
If you read WindyWendy and Frank's analysis carefully, you would notice a high level of knowledge and understanding of the market and the sectors.
I haven't reach that stage yet, when i build a 10M portfolio,  i am sure i would have learnt a lot by that time. (That is my personal performance criteria - as it is good to set goals,  S.M.A.R.T.)

Regarding opening an account with Zenith, just give them a call and start from there,  i did not have to see them face to face, i scanned and sent all the forms. But, the cheque and Share certificates would either need to be delivered in person by a friend or family, or sent via DHL/UPS or whatever you have for courier service.

If you have any problem, shoot me your email address, and i could put you in touch directly with the people i know.

@enurayce
Just trying to relieve the guru a little bit -
Fundamental & Technical analysis are quite a complicated subject to review in simple terms - saying that, not many of us use all of the bits and pieces to full extent.
For example, Fundamental analysis - generally you see people looking at the profit after Tax (PAT), by itself it doesn't make much sense, so we shift to Earning per share (EPS); and that also by itself does not make much sense in comparison to other stocks (Most especially in the same sector); so we eventually look at the Price to earning ratio (PE). Now using PE alone might not give you the whole picture, you want to combine that with the Dividend yield,  that gives you a picture of how much they actually payout.
Then you go into the cashflow of the company, in that way you are going advanced and even more useful is checking their liquidity - debt ratio, gearing ratio that way you would know if they are using most of the profit to payoff debt - in which they might be doing for a longtime, in which cases investors do not expect value on the shares to increase anytime soon.

Check Wikipedia for definition of all this ratios,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fundamental_analysis

For Technical analysis,
You need to hold enough data, or perhaps have a website like www.nigerianstockexchange.com; where you can look at trends,  but that alone is not enough, because you want to check moving average and all that, so you know your entry and exit point - like someone dropped the big words on japanese candlestick recently - this are all complicated and intrinsic ways of performing technical analysis.
A good quote is "the trend is your friend", you do not want to go against the trend, when it is either bearish or bullish.

Check wikipedia as well for overview
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technical_analysis

For starters i would say read the ebook on http://www.stockmarketnigeria.com/,  it is definitely a good starting point.

Where are you based?

I informed a friend of mine about the Union Bank IPO last year and he participated. All this time he had been expecting his certificate, but I found the number for the UK office and gave it to him to call. The union bank office turned out to be accross the street from his office in London, he just walked in there and picked it up. They were even asking were he had been all the time!!

Why they don't communicate with people properly beats me.

PoliticsRe: How To Stop 419? by SavvyLanre: 3:53am On Apr 22, 2007
Loads:
You might be disappointed with your technic of identifing 419. Nowadays lots and lots of people make lots of legitimate money on the internet from home full time or just been a succesful investor. Point 7 is the only one I agree with. Most of the time you neighbour will not even know what you are into. I have friends doing ebay fulltime, forex, day trading etc. You don't see them going to work like everyone else and they drive flasy car with legitimate money. Becareful in your identifing process THIS IS THE INFORMATION AGE you can be a £ millionaire by sitting in your room. RNB ringtone Nigerian guy in London made his first £million in front of his computer at home. Your method might end up harrassing lots of innocent businessmen/women working from home.
@Loads

I agree with what you said - yes, we do not want to harrass innocent people in the process. I am definitely open to other suggestions.
However, If you know your neighbour and talk to them - you would have an idea of what they do - they would be able to intelligently talk about whatever they do. For example, i work from home close to 75% of the time. And, do frequent travels, but my neighbours have an idea of what i do for a living - my friends are aware of the type of job i do.
Chances that people can differentiate a 419er to an innocent worker or business man is very high in comparison to making such a mistake and harrasing innocent people.

As, i said this are my 2 cents - we cannot seat down and watch while a few irresponsible morons with no regards for the good name of our ancestors and home country Nigeria, and for other innocent individuals working a 9-5 job, own legitimate businesses with image tarnished due to the few unscrupulous elements we might know living around us.

Abeg, if you know anyone - expose them, or get them to turn from their evil doings - paying back whatever have been stolen .
PoliticsRe: How To Stop 419? by SavvyLanre: 9:37pm On Apr 21, 2007
I had a similar intention in mind - Now, most of the previous thread is talking about home. What about abroad, europe, US and Canada?

Identifying a 419 Culprit
My opinion is if you have a neighbour, or know of someone that
1) has no job,
2) no concrete business and
3) you see him driving big cars and
4) dressing up in lavish designers wears and
5) spending money as if he plucked it off the tree at the back of his yard,
6) You see different sizes of parcels arriving every day
7) Catch him looking through other peoples mails
cool and many other stuff shown here in America on ABC, Oprah show, 20-20

We should report them to the authorities, and give them sufficient evidence to follow up.

Another idea is posting pictures of them online in their big lifestyle - and seek an explanation of their unknown wealth - some might be legit, but if you are clean - chances are you have noting to hide. Right?

My 2 cents on this topic

CCNN end of year is Dec. 31st. Good luck with your decision, if you already made 100%, you might want to look into new opportunities coming up like First Bank.
