davecris: What's wrong with examples? They are examples of AP (Advanced Pidgin) I proposed above, using Igbo, the only Nigerian vernacular language I know. The beauty of AP is that everyone of the Nigerian over 500 languages would supply words to it. 1 Like |
Culture / Overhauling Pidgin by scholti: 10:01pm On Dec 28, 2018 |
Pidgin English has the potential to truly bond Nigeria linguistically and create an econonmy of at least 5 billion dollars, spanning a network of media houses, novelists etc. But the current pidgin, for all its creative subversion takes most of its vocabulary from English and thus has no originality or concrete raison d'etre. Thus today I am proposing Advanced Pidgin( AP), that deliberately fuses at least 100 words from every one Nigeria's over 500 languages. Two benefits of Advanced Pidgin Pidgin( AP) ( amongst others) Greater linguistic conformity amongst Nigerians By introducing 100 key words from every Nigerian language, vernacular languages would loose their mystery and would be more comprehensible to all. Much of colloquial speech in every language relies heavily on key words, so by making at least 100 words from every Nigerian language available, we are well underway to introducing a pan-Nigerian language. Creating a vibrant sub-economy By creating AP we can can create wealth and employment spanning advertising firms, book publishing, broadcasting etc, that touches every part of the country. The latent commercial potentials of Nigerian vernacular languages are ill-harnessed. AV will open a new vista of enterprenual energy and engagement. Examples of how AP will work I will start by using Igbo, the only Nigerian vernacular language I speak. Here are eight Igbo words that can be introduced into AP: Mahadum (university), Ulọ ( pronounced Ulor) - house, mmiri( water), Amamihe( knowledge), onyonyo ( television), ike ( power), jee (go), nso (near) Here are sample sentences that integrate current pidgin (CP) and Avanced pidgin( AP) I wan jee ulor - I want to go home. My mahadum dey nso. - My university is nearby I wan mmiri. - I want water Amamihe na ike. - Knowledge is power. These sentences give an advanced vernacular experience to pidgin. When the 500 plus vernacular languages supply their owns words, AV would be a force to reckon with , able to generate its own vocabulary for science, literature etc . To be sure current pidgin incorporates words from local languages but they are few and far between. The main bulk of pidgin's vocabulary comes from English and thus there isn't any real distinction between pidgin and English. Advanced pidgin (AP) is an accelerated pathway to jolt pidgin English into the 21st century by synergising Nigerian vernacular languages. lalasticlala, seun, odumchi, Fulaman198, bigfrancis21 2 Likes |

ChinenyeN: It has been a while. I was engaged in other activities, so was absent for a while, but I am now considerably freer. My mind is still very much in this activity. Nothing in the intervening period has convinced me otherwise, of the need to jolt the Igbo language from its complacency. I have more ideas and I am sure, so do you and others so invested. I will create a facebook page or Whatsapp group early next year where we (those of us so interested) can come together, synergistically , as I would like this to be done 'ime ulo' or we use only Igbo here. 2 Likes |

bigtt76:Irokotv makes millions every year. Last year it signed a multimillion deal with a French company, to supply French-speaking countries with films. Infact, it has an international arm supplying (and translating) films to countries around the world interested in Africa films. There is a massive demand for Nollywood films in and out of Nigeria. They are one of the greatest forces in the Nigerian film-making industry. |

ChinenyeN, ChinenyeN: IgboRadio is a poor excuse of a news site. It is hardly updated. Throughout this year, it has barely published anything. The guy who runs it, basically comes in whenever he feels like and posts a story and vanishes. He started out with a good idea, but was perhaps overtaken by other concerns. Journalism is an up-to-the-minute affair. It needs to be fed always. There is not a single functioning Igbo news site or radio platform on the internet, which really says a lot about how the Igbo treat their language. I suggested a news section, a radio platform and other 'less intensive' courses like CV-writing for the sake of traffic (regular site visits to access contents) as this is really important in the beginning - as a clutch, but the main meat would be structured courses. People's interests have to be awakened. An online academy, remains in my considered view, the best way forward in the short-run. It can be linked to an app. Miraculously, I see it catching on with enough persistence, but it at least needs to have a few people willing to dedicate their time to do some translations and diffusion to get it rolling. 2 Likes |

davidante27, davidante27: But Asians and Africans understood each other for millennia without English or French. These languages have only been on the African continent actively for less than 200 years, in a continent that is more than 100,000 years old, in which time Africans communicated and shared with each other across space and time. English and French, serve a useful purpose but they are not inevitable. Even today on the continent, there are extensive spaces where African languages play a vital role of communication. 2 Likes |

Pleep, pleep: You are not of us. We are just humouring you. You couldn't even deal with the meat of the points I raised, yet you run around writing about IQ. You write like someone with a mental disease. I only replied the language part for a reason. ONLY AFRICAN LANGUAGES - ALL OF THEM - SHOULD BE USED ON THE CONTINENT IN UNIVERSITIES, POLITICS, ECONOMICS ETC AND ENGLISH, FRENCH ETC COME A DISTANT SECOND. AFRICAN ETHNIC GROUPS AND LANGUAGES MUST REMAIN AS THEY ARE. I speak six European languages and I can't see any superiority they have that they should be accorded pride of place. Europe has a land mass of 10.18 million km² with a commensurate 87 ethnic groups, while Africa has more than thrice that number - 30.22 million km² and an official 3000 ethnic groups, although the true number is around 1200 as many distinct ethnic groups are more properly, subgroups and there are lots of deep ties of culture, marriage and history that create a deep core of unity amongst the ethnic groups. Africa has enough space and resources to cater for all its ethnic groups and languages, they only need to be managed in respectful spaces like the Switzerland example I wrote in my previous post. We do not need to merge ethnic groups and languages to create a few super-continental languages or ethnic groups for peace and prosperity. Europe with its fewer ethnicities has given us catastrophic examples of barbaric wars and carnages. Even if merging would take place, it should be a consensual/natural process that would take place over time. 4 Likes |

The English language is largely a borrowed language. There is very little in it that is native to it compared to 90% of Nigerian languages that depend on their vocabulary and grammar to function. Take Igbo for instance. It has hundreds of dialects with their own vocabularies, proverbs etc. It has native words for many plants, trees, animals, politics, economics etc, where the English language equivalents are from Greek and Latin. The English language should be a distant second language on the continent. If not for inferiority complex, by now we should have Hausa, Zulu, Shona etc, universities in Africa, just as there are Polish, Catalan etc universities. No European country - apart from Ireland for historical reasons - has bowed to the international might of English by making it a national language and Europe has fifty countries. Even Sweden that is seen as the most receptive of English, has the second highest number of published articles - in Swedish - on Wikipedia. Preach your message of making the English language a continental language, first to Europe, the homeland of English as it only comes a distant second on the continent. I would rather Zulu be the continental language. It is a more natural language - 90% of its vocabulary belongs to it. Its written works on science, politics, economics etc are largely its own. It has produced lots of books and has a vibrant media. English produces more books because of its status in world science and business. But German, French, Japanese and Chinese etc are not far behind. There are many knowledges that are not published in English. Every years lots of books are published in African languages from Malawi, Uganda etc. Africa only needs to manage its diversity of languages, by respecting them and apportioning spaces to them to thrive (I prefer it to be in-country) and then allowing mutual co-operation between them. We should aim for the Switzerland example. It is composed of French, Italian and German ethnic groups, with each having universities run in their languages and many other examples of cultural cohabitation. This is civilisation. 3 Likes |
Culture / Re: African Languages And Cultures Need To Be Eliminated As Soon As Possible. by scholti: 12:16am On Dec 19, 2015 |
Africa doesn't need to aggregate its many languages into an arbitrary few, rather it needs to rearrange the diversity of its languages, in my view, into federal units (within their existing nations). There are 225 indigenous European languages, yet Europe is home to many of the world's prosperous and semi-prosperous countries. Literally every country in Europe runs on its own language(s). Languages are important to the economic, political and social fabric of a country. If they are going to die, it should be a natural/consensual process involving the native speakers and not something slapped on them. Igbo and Yoruba for instance, are more natural than French. The former languages rely heavily on their natural formations, while the latter on Latin, from where it derives most of its grammar and vocabulary. In fact African languages on the whole, are natural specimens of used languages. They are spoilt with numerous dialects, each having unique words and richness. The only area African languages might struggle is in deep science and even this is navigable with great creativity. There are many African languages that have come a long way like Kinyarwanda and Zulu, that have generated huge bodies of writings. 3 Likes |

Agumagu Igbo dika Ngwaoru n'ikwalite ezi Nchekwa na Nkwusiike Ohaobo Abstract After the Nigerian independence in 1960, the expectation of many of her citizens was that things would be better. But as time went on, it was observed that things were becoming worse. Different systems of government emerged. The military and civilians ruled but situation went forth to be bad. It was obvious that their governance was bad and characterized with selfish interest. Notwithstanding that God blessed Nigeria with many resources; her citizens are still suffering from hunger; terrible things always happen; many parents could no longer afford their childrens’ school fees; youths that graduated from the university are unemployed. This kind of unhealthy situation brings about social instability and encourages some Nigerian to engage in different crimes like robbery, kidnapping, extra judicial killings, and murder of different kinds, etc. it is against this background that the researcher hopes to examine different ways the Igbo literature, especially the Igbo written poetry could help to control this ugly situation and bring about good security and also promote social stability. The study analyzed some written Igbo poems in order to observe the position of some Igbo poets concerning the situation of governance in Nigeria and their contributions on how to improve it, so as to promote good security and progress in Nigeria. It isn't impossible to have Igbo-run schools. Infact I attribute their absence to the poor thinking skills that largely defines the Nigerian leadership. It is just that in the short-run we must stoop to conquer. I posted my '100 scientific terms translated into Igbo' in an Igbo facebook group, I joined recently and some of comments I read made me understand that there are Igbos who do not know the wealth and possibilities of their language. I believe with a convincing argument many would be convinced of the utility of Igbo-run schools. 2 Likes |

Ezeagu, I wish I can share your optimism of Igbos sending their children to Igbo-run schools, but my observations lead me to the pessimism of it happening in the short run save for a radical government policy that would reorientate the language situation. I still maintain, an online academy would be an appropriate start. This would have the advantage of showcasing what a physical Igbo academic presence would do, including the deployment of new Igbo specialist terms. There is absolutely no doubt that the Igbo language is capable of any level of academic usage and that Igbos would perform better in their native tongue, it is just that a lot of Igbos are stuck to the security, the English-only education system in Nigeria offers. 1 Like |

Since English is the exclusive language of instruction in Nigeria, setting up an Igbo-run school is not feasible in the short run, because the Igbo, for the most part, have become acclimatised to the completely English-run educational system, and its dominant economic rewards and security. What I think is feasible in the short term, is setting up an online academy where all sorts of courses or instructions would be offered in Igbo, accessible to all, with the widest diffusion. This academy would evangelize the Igbo language as a potent language of instruction. This ofcourse would need the participation of at least some Igbos, who are willing to volunteer their time to do translations and writings. This site would be a go-to for any speaker of the language seeking help for anything, from, cv-writing, travelling to manufacturing. It would have news reports and a radio platform. We have to stoop to conquer. Many Igbos, faced with the incontrovertible evidence of their language offering similar instructions, would be converted (and actively campaign) to the idea of getting instructions non-virtually, privately or publicly in Igbo. I am ready to join this train with like-minded people today. We must move beyond thoughts and words into action. 2 Likes 1 Share |
