PoliticsWe Are In Hot Soup. Un Planning To Conduct 2007 Presidential Election? by segoye2(op): 3:16pm On Dec 20, 2006
Dear Landers,

I just read through the piece bellow and felt real bad,  After we left the great british empire, are we now going in for the second slavery in the hands of the UN? In anyway, to monitor or supervise means inefficience on the path of our country. But in any shape this poll monitering is going to take, I know it won't sound good at all!!!.

http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/news/article07

UN ready to monitor Nigerian polls, says Annan
From Laolu Akande, New York
IF requested to do so by the Nigerian Government, the United Nations (UN) is ready to monitor the nation's general elections next year to ensure they are free and fair, its out-going Secretary-General, Mr. Kofi Annan, said yesterday in New York.

Annan spoke at his final press conference at the UN headquarters in New York.

Answering a question on calls by some Nigerian politicians, including an All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) presidential aspirant, Chief Harry Akande, that the UN should monitor the 2007 elections, Annan said only the Federal Government could make the request and such should be made early so that the world body could start making plans for effective monitoring.

Annan, who will quit office by the end of the year, however did not comment on the current pre-election preparations in the country, which have generated disagreement between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), some politicians and political groups.

Annan said he was not close enough to the issue to make a comment on the state of preparedness for the elections on the part of the INEC and the Federal Government.

But he said "the UN will be in a position to help if asked to do so." Recalling the recent successful conduct of the Congo elections, Annan said the UN had helped with over 100 elections worldwide.

If the request would come from the Nigerian government, the UN Secretary-General said, it had to come early "so we can work out the technical aspect in order to assure ourselves that the elections would proceed well."

According to the UN scribe, sometimes the global body also works to coordinate the work of international observers, but that also has to be based on the request of the Nigerian government.

Some political groups and presidential aspirants, including Akande, have been calling for a role for the UN in the conduct of the 2007 elections.

Annan spoke on several other international issues, including the United States (U.S.) invasion of Iraq, African Union (AU) and the role of the U.S. and other veto-wielding countries of the UN Security Council.

On the AU, Annan said the UN relationship with the body was improving, noting that the AU faced a huge challenge trying to form a union out of 53 nations, when the EU, when it started, had only 6 members.

He added that the AU lacked the kind of resources and logistics required, which he said was evident in the Darfur AU peacekeeping mission.

Annan urged the EU and other international bodies to provide support to the AU in order to strengthen the laudable efforts of the union.

Speaking on the Sudanese crisis, especially in Darfur, Annan said he was still in active dialogue with the Sudanese President, Omar el-Bashir, to clarify the new effort to have an AU-UN force in Sudan.

The Sudanese government had rejected the idea of a UN international force in the country to curb alleged genocide and other atrocities taking place in Darfur.

He disclosed that the government of Spain had donated $700 million to the UN for the realisation of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), describing the gesture as the single largest contribution to the MDGs programme, which was put in place under Annan's leadership.

Annan completes a 10-year tenure on the last day of this year.
Nigeria is really in hot soup,  We can stop them,  can we?

PoliticsRe: Is Nigeria A Country Of Scammers by segoye2(m): 9:27pm On Dec 19, 2006
@ Topic,

Well to me, Nigeria is not a scam country but the people in it. If ABC called Nigeria a country of scammer, then you should not let that bulge you. This issue is not a new thing to us, even when you log-in to a any chat room and claim you are from Nigeria, all you get is bye ,

You see, they might be right some how, I mean what makes up the earth is people, which means a new earth is new people (refined people) , what makes up a country is people (citizens), which means the people in the country, So you can see that they are refering to the citizens, Well, that doesn't imply that all the citizens are scammers. But the top browsers, top men in politics and so so so, are top shoot scammers and they will always be.

You can't deny the fact that you have Scammers all around you in the country now. Though is even a thing of pride that some devil motidated mothers advice their kids to join the wagon in a bait to make furtune.

And the fact remains that, you are not scammers, we are not scammers.

Though because we protect them around us, we can't then deny our involvement in the act.

We can make this people know that we are not scammers trully, if we report all scammers around us to EFCC, Police or report them to Scambaiter Authorities abroad if you feel you want to be save. If you don't know how to report them, reach me at www.conceptwalker.tk or mail segun_somaf@yahoo.com.au

@ Lewa,

Am sorry it took me a while to respond to you post. I read through your post. It was in a way very funny and I could not help but laugh.
Do you really go through all this pain to crave insults on me because I don't see life the way you illitrates see things? You remember my post on an Educated person in response to one of your usual insults?

Here you go again, mallam! When did he pick the presidential primary ticket? If he was not a member would he have been allowed to pick nomination forms?Or you think that we really don't jnow anything?
Why did you choose to call me mallam here? Are thinking mallam to be an insult? I believe no because you mean Teacher and that I will be to you as long as Naira remains online. Atiku left PDP and picked presidential ticket preimary ticket in a new party; or you have not read about it yet? and IBB picked from another party too? You mean you have not read it yet? I mean I don't really thought you no nothing, I KNOW you no nothing.

So you know now?Remember this is www, not your village! We are not almajiris or donkeys!
Do you mean Almajiris are not citizens of Nigeria? I mean you mean they are monkeys? Are you better than them in any form? did you know the rules of www. as you claim it? When was even your first time of coming to the internet?

Lewa, if I should award you, I will say you are the poorest post threader of the year.
Your talent of writing trash will do you good if you write comedy or newspaper to illitrates. Your raigning period on Naira Land as copy as paste expert has expired. This time, write something out, make out your own words.

Remember this is www, not your village! We are not almajiris or donkeys!
I bet you are enjoying all the bits of Lewa's grammer.  But to me, their is nothing to be excited about in this rubbish he wrote. or you find it funny? I mean what do you find funny, you the monkey , or you the Almanjiri?

@ Big B1,

I believe our dear friend here is very excited that he can exchange post on a nigerian site free of charge. We have good men on this site, we have Seun who has sacrificed lots of time to make this forum be online, I believe is time we advice him to activate pay per click modem on this site. @ Mariori,

Is certian you don't even know who you want as your leader. The leader should be talking about is the leaders that we really know, is not those that we don't know, that are unpopular, that are being financed by same fellows, that can't stop stealing.

I mean who do you need as your president. Lets forget the platform of DPD or any kangaro party that know that they have no head way but wait for compesation. NAME THE MAN.

Are you talking about the kind of moment of bliss we hard with OBJ when we selected him the first time and did same the second time? are you talking about the fuel hick we hard 10+ since his resumption 1999? Are you talking about the killings accross the country? are you talking about the air crashes, are you talking about the lion killed even in the heart of Abuja? are you talking about the killings in the Niger Delta? are you talking about No degree leaders which = to illitrates we have in the country (e.g Andy Uba; No primary school attended)? Are you talking about the illegal removal of governor + forcefully assuming governorship position in the west and the east? Are you talking about the pleasure of high court querying the judgment of the supreme court?  are you calling all this and lots more a good time with u and OBJ?

Fela Anikulakpo has said it all that Nigerians are suffering and smiling. Instead being slaved by fellow blacks like you, and leading a decietful live like the OBJ, the rests and rest, save No to it. (Resist the devil and he shall flew away from you).

@ Lewa,

Did you really copy threads from nigeriaworld.com and paste on Naira land? Because you just copied one and pasted it on this forum; from this forum  huh

I mean lets try educate ourselfs here, left stop the coping and paste act, lets make our own words, lets stop using odd words and above all make Nigeria a better place to fall back at.

@ Topic,

Well, Yar'Adua might be picked as the presidential candidate for PDP party. But the fact shows that Election has to be done. And PDP has to wait and see the result too. I strongly believe that PDP can not make it through to producing us a president.

Yar'Adua stands as a sign of PDP failure comes 2007. I always remind myself that the president of Nigeria can not be from PDP, even if (present) Mr. President take all the highest position in PDP in a lure to avoid probe after his present tenure.

I always believe and know that Nigerians are wise and they can make a wise choice. Is high time we pull out and follow our mind instead of the crowd.

You mean Utomi and Ebite Ukiwe are real saints? Can you please share you personnal expirience with this saints, how they got their money and atleast the few you know about them?

This group of Saints are unpopular figures thats why you thought they are saint. Is Andy Uba not as gentle as Ebite? I know you have given up all for your anti-IBB campaign, And I know how hard it could be to take a retreat but is not too late yet, you can renouce all and follow the old path.

The only person that can audit this present government by mid next year is IBB. Because his a straight forward man and fears no one. The greatest mistake our federation will make is entrusting the government in the hands of OBJ's babies.

To get a balance check mate, we really need IBB.

Back to the point; Please name your saints!!!

Hello Fellars,

Men, I kinda think we should do the stuff a state issue. Say choose each user for individual positions i.e Lagos State most wickest user name so, so, so, instead of making it round up for ones. at the end of the state level, the nominated members could be arranged on a national level for the national award winner.

@ Seun,
And now that landers are pressing for awards, I believe you too deserve an award. I am personally awarding you the best forum webmaster of the year 2005 / 2006. You can come down to Delta State for your award.

PoliticsRe: Why Ibb Stepped Aside For Now by segoye2(m): 8:41pm On Dec 13, 2006
PDP is a failure and I must confess, from all point of view, IBB knew it and has exercise the spirit of a leader by opting out.

The point that IBB left PDP is not a stamp of failure or a standing point that his going to fail as the president in 2007. From all indications, IBB is still the man that can shape things right.

If IBB is a sinner or a killer as you portray him to be, then show us or point to us who is the Saint in this present state of our national democracy.  Point out or name who you think is going to fit in for the 2007 presidential seat. Just a simple question.

Across the country, through out the federation; PDP has finally failed us over and over. And even when the anti-IBB are happy that he opted out, our joy knew no bounds.

Am sincerely happy that IBB is finally out of PDP, it's a great development.

@ All,

With all your comments, I felt we as a nation have finally come to the conclusion that parties enforce their candidates on our polity.

The fact that IBB left PDP is a good development to this campaign team. We must note here that IBB is not even a member of PDP, he only picked thier presidential primary ticket which we all know the PDP top men won't let go.

Another point we should note is that their are so much irregularities in the PDP party. Let use the governor primaries as a case study; They are still counting the ballots when it was announced that so, so, so is the winner, while the primary was help is a constituency instead of the state capital.  PDP is a failure, IBB knew it and followed the part of wisdom.

IBB is out of PDP, and his out for good. Other parties can do better than the PDP. Alams is from PDP party, Ekiti Ex-Governor, Andy Uba, Oyo state crises, so so so are all from PDP.

Most Nigerian follow what others believe, and the most ughly part of the story here is, most of us here on this site or around have never come in contact with IBB or his ughly deals.

We all could be happy that IBB is out of PDP, the joy is not yours alone, we are happy too. He has picked a ticket on another political party platform.

As I always encourage us, let keep a clean election record for 2007, and you will have the opportunity of knowing who finally emerged the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

@ Big B1

Brother, I will encourage that you post no thread on this post.  Is totally not worth the stress.

@ lolobukkie,

I understand you are enquiring about nafdac recruitment. lolobukkie, Nafdac don't advertise or do any public recruitment. All you need do to be in Nafdac is get an upper hand from either the presidency, senate or any top governmental official.

I could remember years back when Nafdac in one of the pid in the Niger Delta needed a CLEANER. A mere cleaner to dust table, chairs and the rest, sister, the person was sent from Abuja. So you see, if you need the job, you need to stay close to the top. Your qualification is ok for nafdac but Even a nafdac official cannot promise you a help. It has to be from the TOP.

Many jobs in Nigeria; The best way to get a fast job in an oil field in nigeria is to use OND, NCE or HND certificate, check them out in almost all the oil field, is pretty hard to get a B.Sc holder who is staffed, they are all contract staff(s). For those that did their NYSC in our recognised oil field, they will discover that the staff(s) or contract starff(s) who are OND, NCE, HND holders are not friendly especially to the B.Sc. holders because anything can happen, you can just push them out like that.

Sometimes, I can't help but imagine where the present system is leading up to.

I almost forgot to say, your post title attracted much viewer, you could title it a ? thread and it will attract more landers instead of making it solution ++ question.

You have really done well and I now believe most of our job seekers will know how to go about a nafdac job if they ever dreamt of becoming a Nafdac official.

Dear Miss,

I really appreciate your comment, though it is really much of an insult to me.
The link I included in my previous post is not from a personal site, is from the official site of the nigerian police force, The words there are not mine, I know I might have faulted when I said EFCC is on the look out for fellows like you; Am sorry to say is a bitter truth if you are one of the 419ners we have on the lander site, but if you are not, which I believe you are not, I mean you are just doing your right as a lander (sharing), then EFCC is not on a look out for you.

Another step I will encourage you to take here is that, you should try to confirm every information(s) you upload on any public forum and try, to back up your evidence or testimony. Is a pity when some persons replying your post are saying you have done your best posting something, well the 419ners post thiers too so you see is not a big deal to.

Even your post on this site on this police stuff was on the Vanguard too but that is not new to us in nairaland because even this U.S greencard 419ners advertice some years back on the papers and now what they ask you is page 75 USD above or connect them to anyone that has a credit card in your family, friends so so so, o, You see, not all advert you will trust. Am not amongst those that seat on systems to punch their keyboard because of idealness. I still thank God that through my good efforts, I have been able to fix 3 to for persons on a job at the Offshore as helper. I have my office to run, and lots of jobs that keep me busy online.

@ oyeabey,
Did you really find police recruitment form online? I know police do recruit and I still remember the process you use when you are planning to get into the police force. I called one of the present CP of (state name witheld) and he confirmed the information is fake. The Issue here is check my link and read what is there.

@ dabriggs,
Well, our police force are doing great now; is a good development, Am not against nigerian police force because I can't expect Interpol from UK or FBI from U.S to take over our country because of some of our failed policy in the force. I work as an online detective undercover and known by so many police personnel in the country and abroad. So the issue of sending recharge card is out of point in my case because, if you are pretty close with my previous posts, you will know if am a fool as you were made to believe.

@Miss,
Since you are sure that your information is right, oyeabey and lots of job seekers who are ready to path with their money in place of a ghost job will really appreciate and keep appreciating you efforts.

Am sincerely sorry if I step on anyone's foe. But here Miss, am not a fool and am never one, so please stop addressing me with odd words.

@ mo wapa

I just discovered something here, most people just seat out there and write out some kind of bullshit because of thier time they always was, I mean they want it to be well wasted.

As in, I just discover that You gat some Fever to cure. You and the rest of your group, You really want to make a name leading a team of under-nurtured men to face IBB? Una no reach, FLY, I mean make una get more members.

Is so funny and revealing that some group of persons support OBJ and host of others to IBB? which party una belong self? IBB will be the president of Nigeria by 2007.

How many houses IBB buy for him children for abroad, how many international bank account was he or is he operation in the past and present? How many refinery him get? Omo, some of us ee, We just they talk like say we no dey educated at all.

Do you know , do you really know , what it means to be an educated person? We are told that it is a good thing to be an educated person. We are told that people who are educated can live better lives by getting better jobs and doing a lot of important things that require a good education. That's very true. The problem is that we are often confused and mistaken about what it truly means to be an educated person.

Is a person who manages to graduate from high school a truly educated person? Maybe, but not necessarily so.
Is a person who graduates from a technical and career college an educated person? Maybe, but not necessarily so.
Is a person who graduates from college an educated person? Maybe, but not necessarily so.
Is school teacher or college professor a truly educated person? Probably, but not necessarily.
You see, education is not an accomplishment or a diploma. It is an attitude , it is a way of approaching life.

One very popular misconception about truly educated people is that they know a lot of facts--the length of the Nile river, the correct spelling for an Aztec sun god, the mean temperature around the equator of Mars, the names of all the characters in the novel War in Peace. This is not true. These are signs that a person has a good memory, but these are not indications that a person is well educated. There are people who can quote the entire Bible or the Guinness Book of World Records from memory, but that doesn't mean they are well educated. It fact, it doesn't necessarily mean they are very smart.

You see, education is not simply knowing a lot of facts. It is an attitude , it is a way of approaching life.

Okay, so what about people who are trained to do very complicated and delicate tasks? Aren't they considered well educated? Not necessarily. Well trained? Yes , most certainly? Computer programmers, for instance, should be well-trained in the necessary computer and programming skills, but they don't need to be well educated. It's nice if they are because it will better their careers and lives.

You see, education is not simply a matter of being well trained in a career skill. It is an attitude , it is a way of approaching life.

The key to becoming a truly educated person is learning how to learn. Interact with others in the same situations, and display your new-found levels of ability and understanding. And here you see, truly educated person is not him that says what ever thing that comes his / her mind but approaches every problem(s) systematically, IBB is a plain, stress free solution to Nigerian almighty PROBLEMS.

Hey, and you that is preparing for war or assassination attempts, be ready!, I mean, readi well well, because we plenty wey you go puff.

Ibrahim Babangina is the main Baba n Nigeria. Mu na ji ra n ka, a 2007.

You are dame right. IBB is Nigerian Solution come 2007. Meanwhile, noone can stop him.

Why?

1. All his opposers are corrupt.
2. Have you imagine while one governor is removed because of corruption and another installed, Man, is not even up to a year of of their been in office, they are accused of corrupt practices.
3. If we want to be convinced that all our saints are sinners, then ask EFCC to investigate the presidency, Setup another agency to investigate EFCC activities.

Lets wake up Nigeria, IBB is still the best man, for , 2007. Even me, you, we, us, them, somebody, everyone cannot stop him.

If am wrong, then ask EFCC to investigate IBB. Abi his above the law on their book?

@ Topic,

I still think IBB has done no wrong. Even our present government has done worst than that of IBB. In the time of IBB, do you have any greedy fellow in power? I mean like the likes of Fayose, Alams, Dariye, Andy Nba, so so so, Lets wise up. During Gen. IBB's regime, we all enjoyed abundant, And come to think of it, who do you think can be our President right now? Only IBB can save our nation. I mean with him there, Corruption will be done with totally. Even EFCC that has the manner of probing the opposition party will have to face their music in full.

Did EFCC in any case ask IBB to come over for questioning and he refused? I mean where do we have it in the papers? Them say them say has eaten deep into us. The only Agency that called him and he refused to show up for is "OPUTA PANEL". The Oputa Panel is in my own view a childs play. I mean, what did the guy cross-examining Prof. Wole Soyinka ask the Prof to do? (Prof. pleas come down to my Level) becuase Prof. W. Soyinka said as we are "gbajojorising" Nigeria, God will save us. The question we should ask ourselves is, is Oputa Panel set-up for free or we given some kind of financial backup? How much were they given and how much ? how much? Abi na free? All this IBB is aware and to backup the financial gain of this agency, I believe important personnel are to come in play. Take it or leave it, IBB is clean. If IBB is not clean, or if is too big for NIgerian law to break, I believe EFCC or any agency that is involved should have reported him to the UN. Wetin happen to SADAM still dey corner.

Is pretty funny that every corruption is pointing at ASO ROCK, pointing at PDP. We still judge people with what they do years back. Babangida cancelled june 12, 1993. is that his crime that will make him not qualified? Ok, He killed some innocent souls huummm? How many ? Even in this present regime, how many souls have we lossed?

I just hope nigeria will believe in what they have, IBB is the right source, the right man for "07" if we really want to develop as fast as we expected.

Aside IBB, the rest aspirants are greedy in one way or the other. Forget the issue of party, Lets face it, And giving IBB a civilian chance will make a lots of difference interms of We as a nation not only trusting him but giving him the full mandate to correct all the wrongs we felt that he has caused us.

IBB, remember you have a lots of work to DO. You have a lot of conviction to make, I mean IBB need to prove it sooner or later that his not what you, them, view him to be politically.

But here, always ask if the father or mother of such child are legally seperated. If they are not, then is a SIN, 'cos it kinda sound like another man's wife, / otherwise.

I just read this Editorial on Guardian this morning, Should it be that they bought us sub-standard Planes?

Read the Aticle bellow.

The missing $380 billion
THE recent revelation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that Nigeria has lost more than $380 billion (N49, 020 trillion) to theft and wastage in the last 46 years should come as no surprise.

Corruption in public places, looting of the treasury, bribery, inflation of contracts, political chicanery and brazen mismanagement of public resources and institutions have been common, recurrent phenomena in the country. What was missing before now is the precise documentation of the gravity and extent of this ugly fact of our lives. The public is, however, fully aware of the disastrous impact of all these on national growth and development.

The tragedy of corrupt enrichment and wastage has been made possible largely by no other factor but bad leadership, in addition to the absence of a functional reward and punishment system through which a framework of national values could have been created. The figure that has been provided by the EFCC reveals that the aforementioned vices have been part of the national experience and process since independence. They undoubtedly assumed a more horrid dimension progressively in the course of time.

The evidence can be found in the country's chronic underdevelopment. In the last 40 years, the quality of human life has dropped in the same manner in which Nigerians have witnessed great failure in other aspects of their lives: education, health care, roads, electricity supply, national employment profile and public institutions generally. The EFCC was set up to address the evil of corruption which has made it possible for money meant for national development to end up in private pockets and accounts, to the detriment of the majority.

The Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu has revealed that the missing $380 million is part of a sum of about $500 billion development assistance granted to Nigeria in four decades. He spoke at the launching in Abuja of a programme tagged "EFCC Fix Nigeria Initiative" and separately to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). Ribadu identified the 1980s and 1990s as the worst period for the country in terms of corruption. He also lamented that the $380 billion is six times the value of the amount of money that was used for rebuilding Europe at the end of the Second World War, as part of the well-known Marshal Plan

Ribadu obtained his facts from records that were kept by the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Ministry of Finance. Incidentally, the President of the World Bank, Mr. Paul Wolfwitz made a similar observation to the effect that Nigeria's $300 billion oil wealth has been stolen in the last four decades. It is doubtful whether the two officials were speaking of the same incident. Wolfwitz spoke in far away Oslo, Norway, while Ribadu was in Abuja. What is clear is that while the country made a huge fortune from its natural resources over the years, its leaders squandered most of the gains and thereby pillaged the country's fortunes.

The EFCC's initiative is designed as a collaborative effort to fight corruption, through partnership with civil society organisations, the private sector, the faith community, professional groups and other relevant individuals and stakeholders. The menace of corruption is lamentable. Apart from the loss of huge amounts from development foreign aid, only a tiny fraction of annual budgets are accounted for in the real sense. Every year, the federal, states and local governments claim to spend money on various sectors. In reality however, there is little to show for the huge expenditure.

Contracts are routinely inflated to make allowance for personal gains. In several instances, contracts are not executed at all, or are executed only in part. The country regularly designs lofty plans which are never implemented or completed. In the end, the entire environment is marked by poverty and under-development. According to Wolfwitz, Nigeria is a classic example of how a people in a resource -rich country could wallow in abject poverty.

The EFCC boss identified the 80s and the 90s as being the worst period for Nigeria in terms of the evil of corruption. But this may not be entirely true, even in the absence of reliable statistics to the contrary. The country has made more money from the sale of crude oil in the last 10 years than perhaps in the preceding 20 years. Where has all the money gone? Under the present government, institutions and public infrastructure have practically collapsed.

Despite the EFCC and the adoption of other anti-corruption measures, the nation still experiences corruption at the highest levels of government. Indeed, the country's international rating in the last seven years has been poor. Even the few cases that came to light were scandalous. They include the National Identification Card scam, several bribery and corruption episodes in the National Assembly and at the Executive level, and theft at the state and local council levels. For example, the EFCC itself has confirmed that as many as 24 governors are now being investigated for corruption.

In the instances when public funds were recovered from those who stole them, there has been no satisfactory account from the Federal Government about how those funds would be utilised. In the last four years, sizeable sums were recovered. The EFCC has confirmed that it recovered $5billion and prosecuted 82 persons in the past two years alone. This is a huge amount by any standard. It is enough for instance to completely rejuvenate the country's rail system, and create employment opportunities for citizens. This has not happened, and government officials have no convincing answers.

The EFCC and other anti-corruption bodies should be encouraged. Other institutions that are also responsible for the maintenance of the rule of law would have to be strengthened. What the country needs perhaps is more determination and concerted effort to prosecute those who are caught stealing or mismanaging public funds.

The current trend is unlikely to change if corrupt persons in and outside government, believe that they can always escape sanctions. At the moment, there is an obsession with government service as an opportunity for corrupt self-enrichment; the country's value system would have to be rebuilt over time to re-establish true value, at communal and institutional levels, for honest hardwork, education and self-development, as well as the common good.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/africa/10/29/nigeria.crash/index.html

(CNN) -- A Nigerian airliner carrying 104 people crashed Sunday near the Abuja airport shortly after takeoff and burst into flames, airport and government officials told CNN.

A hospital official told Nigerian television channel NTA that his facility was treating seven survivors.

The Boeing 737, operated by Nigerian airline ADC, was still on fire at the edge of the runway hours after it crashed around noon (6 a.m. ET).

Debris from the shattered plane, body parts and personal belongings of passengers were strewn over an area the size of a soccer field where the plane went down in a wooded area, according to The Associated Press.

Rescue workers pulled burned remains from the smoldering fuselage, and about 50 bodies were gathered in a corner of the site, while the tail of the plane hung from a tree, The AP reported. (Watch the scene at hospital near crash site -- :55)

The aircraft was heading to the northern Nigerian state of Sokoto and may have been carrying the Muslim state's highest ranking official, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Mohammadu Maccido, according to a senior source with Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo's office.

Flight 53 was scheduled to take off from the Nigerian capital Abuja at 10:35 a.m. and land in Sokoto an hour later, according to ADC's Web site.

Nigeria has a poor air safety record, with at least 11 crashes since 1995 that have killed more than 500 people.

The last crash involving ADC happened in November 1996 and killed all 146 people aboard the Boeing 727. That flight went down in Imota, Nigeria, after the pilot lost control of the plane while trying to avoid a head-on collision with another aircraft.

Third fatal crash in 12 months
Sunday's crash is the third fatal crash for Nigeria in the past 12 months.

On October 23, 2005, a Bellview Airlines plane went down in bad weather near Lagos, killing all 117 people on board.

An aircraft operated by Sosoliso Airlines crashed in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, on December 10, killing all 108 on board, including many schoolchildren on their way home for the holidays.

Shortly after that crash, Obasanjo temporarily grounded Sosoliso and many leaders of Nigeria's civil aviation industry were fired.

Months later, Nigeria's aviation minister ruled that the plane crashed because it ran into wind shear during landing, according to a news release from Sosoliso Airlines.

Two weeks ago, ADC's chief executive officer Capt. Mfon Udom told a Nigerian newspaper he expected his airline to be recertified by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to meet international safety standards by the end of 2006.
