Music/RadioRe: Vote for 2face Idibia as Best African (MTV Europe Music Awards 2005) by Seun(mod): 11:28pm On Oct 05, 2005
https://www.nairaland.com/img/2face-vote.jpg

I have voted for 2face Idibia. And you should, too.

Go to the lower right corner of the Flash animation at ema.mtvbaseafrica.com and click on the graphic labelled 'Best African ... Vote'. On the next page, there is a list of African Artists, with 2Face idibia at the top. Click on the empty box next to 2Face Idibia's name to register your vote. A check symbol will appear, followed by a picture of 2face himself, showing that your vote has been submitted.

Good luck!

BusinessWhat Is Money and Where Does It Come From? by Seun(mod): 8:12pm On Oct 05, 2005
Most investing, entrepreneurship, financial management and all the skills that are discussed in the "business" section seem to be focussed on "how to get more money". Since money seems to be so important, I want to ask a simple question:
What is money and where does it come from?

It seems to be such a simple question, but a discussion of the answer would open our eyes to so many things that are happening in the world of business today.

Christianity EtcRe: Are Women More Religious than Men? Why? by Seun(mod): 7:40pm On Oct 05, 2005
Are you saying that the more people suffer the more they go to church? Are you sure that it has nothing to do with women being more emotional?
ComputersRe: To Get ClarkConnect Home 3.1 on a CD by Seun(mod): 7:37pm On Oct 05, 2005
For those who don't know what they are talking about, Clark Connect is "a powerful yet easy-to-use software package that transforms off-the-shelf server hardware into a dedicated Internet firewall, gateway or server." It is based on Linux, so it's basically a Linux Distro.

Their website www.clarkconnect.com appears not to be accessible from Nigerian IP Addresses.

There's some information available on the earlier thread Investors in the Nigerian Stock Market, which is a roll-call those who have interest in investing in Nigeria. I'm excited about the potential of this thread: the valuable information that's being shared here!

Nairaland GeneralRe: Smoking, Drinking, or Womanizing? by Seun(mod): 3:37pm On Oct 05, 2005
What are you talking about? I don't smoke, I don't drink, I do not have a girlfriend and I don't consider myself a saint because I "fight" (that is, I find myself involved in many verbal and virtual disputes).

If you and I take time to interact with people outside our circle of friends we will discover that many assumptions we hold about life are just not valid.

FamilyRe: Should A Woman Be Pregnant for Her Fiance Before Marriage? by Seun(mod): 3:24pm On Oct 05, 2005
Angelaz, I don't think the country is so bad to the extent that every man or woman must have committed or sanctioned abortion at one time or the other. If you're living among a group of "kiri-adugbo"(promiscous) girls you will think that everybody commits abortion but it is really not so!

Ok, so about pregnancy before marriage, I think the most important thing is for people of like minds to marry each other. So if both the man and woman believe in the idea of pregnancy before marriage, let them go ahead and do it! But I would frown at a situation where the man exerts pressure on a woman to get pregnant before he would marry her. That would be fraudulent, and the woman is going to get hurt in the process.

RomanceRe: What if Your Boyfriend Beats You A Lot? by Seun(mod): 1:48pm On Oct 05, 2005
Yes, yes, yes, please drop this abusive 'boyfriend' as soon as possible and don't take him back. A boyfriend or husband should not beat you at all, not to talk of beating you a lot. So please drop the jackass as soon as possible - there's absolutely no gain in being a fool for love.

Jokes EtcJames the Mobster by Seun(mod): 12:20am On Oct 05, 2005
Peter is walking along the road one day when he meets his former friend James, who is a mobster:
Peter: James!
James: Peter! We haven't spoken for ages.
Peter: I am so surprised to see you here. Thought you were in jail!
James: Indeed, I was on trial for tax evasion last year, but I was discharged.
Peter: Weren't you were 'guilty as hell' as everyone said?
James: Sure, but 2 of the witnesses declined to testify and the 3rd committed suicide.
Peter: Suicide?
James: He stabbed himself on the back three times and threw himself into a river.

PhonesRe: Vmobile GPRS Settings: Send 'wapgprs' to 184! by Seun(mod): 1:03pm On Oct 03, 2005
@Anony: the best way to know if you have GPRS in your location is from your phone. Nokia phones show a [G] symbol if they are recieving GPRS signals in the area, even if the GPRS has not been configured. So if you don't see the [G] on your phone, maybe it's not in your area.

So many initiatives on so many fronts! I'm even more impressed now than I was before - I was aware of at most only half of what you've listed here. I think it's good to have the resources to launch business projects on many fronts because one is never absolutely sure which one will be really successful.

ProgrammingRe: Let's Set Up a Non-Profit Developer Network by Seun(mod): 8:30pm On Oct 02, 2005
Most developers in Nigeria probably do not see themselves as being in a position to give back anything to the society at all! Our society has not given most developers so much to the extent that they'll want to give something back.

Having said that, the Nairaland community is an international community. If there are developers outside the country, or within the country, who consider themselves to be in position give away their time and expertise for the benefit of non-profit organizations in Nigeria, I think we would be happy to host them on Nairaland, and interact with them!
ProgrammingRe: MySQL 5.0 Database Has Been Released! by Seun(mod): 8:10pm On Oct 02, 2005
The windows installer doesn't allow me to just upgrade my MYSQL version, but on Linux you can use:
rpm -Uvh {name_of_updated_rpm_packages}

Then you look for the mysql_fix_privileges script and run it once to enable more 5.0 features.

Nairaland GeneralRe: Who is a True Nigerian? by Seun(mod): 2:55pm On Oct 02, 2005
A true Nigerian does not waste his/her money on 'luxuries' such as vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, washing machines, and dishwashers. This is because it is more economical to spend hours every day manually warming food on a stove, sweeping floors with a bent back, and washing. Extra money should be spent on necessities like highly advanced camera phones, which will only be used for making voice calls!

A true Nigerian never makes appointments on time. It is ok to be late for 30 minutes to one hour. If you're a big man or big woman, then you can delay an appointment by up to 4 hours withouit an apology. If your host gets angry or decides to cancel your meeting due to your lateness, it simply shows that he/she needs to learn patience and respect.

A true Nigerian believes that thieving leaders should be prosecuted executed, because the punishment should fit the crime. That is why petty thieves in Lagos are usually lynched when they are caught. A true Nigerian knows that stealing and killing are basically the same thing - afterall, most of us have never stolen in our lives.

A true Nigerian believes that we are morally superior to the people who live in developed countries. This is why we are not the second most corrupt nation in the world, and there is no crime in Nigeria.

A true Nigerian doesn't know how much time is taken by common tasks like housekeeping, cooking a particular meal, or making a frequent trip. When you ask, "how long will it take?" the answer is "a short while. just wait for me". Ask, "will it take up to 30 minutes?" and the answer is "just wait". That is why we don't need timers in Nigeria. We are a patient people!
BusinessWhat Business Do You Run? by Seun(mod): 1:32pm On Oct 02, 2005
I run an Internet discussion forum called Nairaland, which makes money by displaying context-targetted ads.

The Nairaland Forum is profitable on paper, but that's only because the owner/administrator doesn't take home any salary to maintain itself. So we're in a position where we need much more traffic so we can get enough revenue to pay the administrator, employ contract programmers to implement miscellanous features and perhaps hire third parties to work on the site full-time.

What about you? What business do you run? What can you tell us about your business?

UPDATE: This was 2005. Now in 2007, the business is truly profitable, but still it only employs one person - me!
