THE trial of Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, opens this morning in London where formal charges of money laundering will be preferred against him. Sources told The Guardian last night that he is being prosecuted for allegedly transferring more than a million pounds from Nigeria to the United Kingdom illegally. http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/news/article01/280905 |
Shadiat, welcome to Nairaland! ![]() (I forgot to welcome you before now) |
Here's the latest on the 1000 Naira note: NIGERIA'S newest currency, the N1,000 note, will be launched on October 12 by President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abuja. A copy of the note was displayed yesterday in Abuja by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Officials of the apex bank said Obasanjo would launch it at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, October 12. http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/news/article01/270905 What do you think? |
Also a important point - make sure the girl is real. |
Even anti-abortion campaigners know the answer to this one: forget the child and save the mother - the mother can have another child later. |
I agree with you that trading of stocks in public companies like Microsoft, IBM, Coca-cola is mostly speculation. Do you know Mark Cuban, the billionaire who made money by selling broadcast.com? He argues, in a recent blog post, that there's a big difference between investment and speculation: " The difference between the two is very simple. If you spend the money and the only way you can earn a return on that money is by selling whatever it is you have purchased. You are speculating. If you give your money to a person or company, and that money is used directly to create commerce or to create an asset that will be used in commerce. If there are profits from that commerce that can be returned to you as a result, that is an investment" What Is An Investor? - By Mark Cuban As I see it, speculation and gambling are basically the same thing. What I'm trying to say is that gambling is not the ideal way to make money. One should be involved in a business that provides real value to customers. The only people that are doing real business and making real money (not gambling money) from domain name speculation are the registrars who charge just $10/annum or so. They are making millions of the millions of opportunists who think that the domain names they are buying and selling will make them rich. |
This is not the kind of goal that we should be aspiring for. I've heard enough of people looking for easy money from the Internet. Most domains are not worth more than the $10/annum that they are sold for, and those that might be worth a bit more have been taken up by domain name speculators who buy thousands of domains in hope that a handful of them will be worth thousands of dollars. This kind of business is pure speculation and history has thought us that for every John Doe who makes a positive return at a speculative business, there is another John Doe who fails woefully. In my opinion, this is not the kind of Internet wealth dream that Nigerians should be aspiring for. |
apology accepted tpbm should post a new topic |
I didn't say threaten, I said 'subtly mention'. There's a difference. She should go like, "ma, I really need that phone number. Because if I don't get the number, I'll have to go to the police1, but I don't want to go to the police. Please, help me in God's name ... my friends2 say they can't help me if I don't get the information" Information subtly passed accross: 1) I am aware of the option of going to the police. 2) I have friends with me who are advicing me |
Hmm .. Shadiat, I think your avatar needs to put on some clothes. And you really need to fix your caps lock key. Other than that, we're cool . |
Can she subtly mention to the woman that she's considering the possibility of going to the police as a last option? I think this should put the woman in a more cooperative mood. (Yes, you're right not to mention any of the details in public unless it's determined to be necessary) |
ABUJA, 22 Sep 2005 (IRIN) - Militants loyal to Moujahid Dokubo-Asari said they had taken over several oil facilities in the Niger Delta on Thursday, as Nigerian officials said the militia leader would be charged with treason. http://www.irinnews.org/report.asp?ReportID=49197&SelectRegion=West_Africa PORT HARCOURT, 27 Sep 2005 (IRIN) - Two oil facilities in Nigeria, shut by militiamen protesting their leader's arrest, have reopened, oil company officials said on Tuesday, after the groups withdrew their threats to dynamite installations and kidnap foreign workers. http://www.irinnews.org/report.asp?ReportID=49259&SelectRegion=West_Africa Well, it appears that, finally, someone somewhere is giving them good advice. |
What a case! The following information will prove useful to those who want to help: - The name and address of the woman she was living with in the UK. - The picture of the girl (so her parents would be able to recognize her). - The full name of her father, and a description. If you report the case to the British authorities they'll deport her, right? |
The much-awaited MySQL version 5.0 has finally been released. New features include: * Views (both read-only and updatable views). * Stored Procedures and Stored Functions, using the SQL:2003 syntax, which is also used by IBM's DB2. * Triggers (row-level). * Server-side cursors (read-only, non-scrolling). * New storage engines (ARCHIVE and FEDERATED). * XA Transactions (distributed transactions). Have you downloaded it already? I like the fact that many of the repetitive queries I run every day for statistics and stuff like that can now be stored in the database and executed more easily through stored procedures. Yes, support for stored procedure is my favorite MySQL 5.0 feature! What's yours? To Download MySQL 5.0, visit http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/5.0.html |

We've been having dreams like this for a long, long time. Unfortunately I don't have any expertise in the area of events management. If there's any Nairaland member who is trustworth and ready to take the challenge I'm willing to lend my support. We can have one such meeting in each of the main countries our members are from - US, Nigeria (Lagos), and UK. It will be a nice way for the singles to hook up . Search the web for Naijaryders Reunion and you'll see that this is something other web communities have done before. |
Hmm ... Propre, it's hard to give a good answer without understanding the nature of the relationship between you and your friend, marital status, etc. You know, sometimes women can be funny when dealing with men. You never know what she's thinking, she may even think you're trying to buy her with the money or something. The lady in question probably needs to be ignored for a few weeks. Here's what I'd do in a similar situation. I'll send her a message, "forget about the money, I don't want it anymore. Even if you return it, I won't take it. Even if you don't want to see me anymore, you should at least call me to say 'thank you'". And then forget about her for a few weeks or months or however long it takes for her to come to her senses. If the friendship is worth anything, she will eventually come around. And if she doesn't, please forget her - getting rid of her would be worth every penny you've spent on her! |
A simple solution to this problem is to call her and tell her to forget about the money. Is there anything preventing you from taking this step today and save your friendship? |
In five years I should be financially secure, and very comfortable. I should be able to move from country to country as I wish. I should be recently married or just about to. I should be running a fast-growing business empire with national reach and going international. The way to achieve all this is to take one step at a time. Even if it takes more than 5 years, no problem! |
She's a two time divorcee and he's a kid. How much money are you willing to bet on this marriage? |
This is a wonderful idea for rehabilitation of male ex-convicts. Auction them off to lonely women on TV shows! |

I'm thinking, maybe Lizzy got a 9 hour time-out and she's upset over it! |
Yes. MTN Sightz & Soundz. |
You cannot use the Old Testament to support war. That's like making a mockery of the entire concept of Christianity. Or has Christianity become completely different since when I left it? ![]() |
Nigerian banks that are known to issue affordable Mastercard Debit/Credit cards include: - First Bank: http://www.firstbanknigeria.com/adc/adc_mcard.asp - Ecobank (the EcoBank Mastercard): sunnewsonline - Standard Trust Bank (STB Mastercard/Maestro Card) Those cards should be usable for making online purchases, and you'll need the naira equivalent of $250 (or more). So call up the above listed banks and ask them about their requirements. Good luck! |
Royal Prophet Seun reporting for service, sir! I think we need to get the people to give generously to this cause, so that they can recieve their holy blessings. I would be honored to serve as a co-treasurer, accountant, bill-collector, secretary in charge of collections, etc. For the sake of the Holy Followers of the Coconut, that they may be blessed! |
Were the Christians that were unjustly killed in the first century superhuman? Were the disciples superhuman? Why then did they not 'fight for their rights' instead of running away or alowing themselves to be killed? |
You mean to tell me that if a man breaks into your house and starts to fight you with intent to kill you, would you will smile and look at him with love? You can run away, until you feel "your time" has come. That is what Jesus, the Apostles, and first century Christians usually did. I would not do that, however (I do not claim to be a practicing Christian ). |
Radio Nairaland, here we come! ![]() |
*sigh* That was in the Old Testament. Remember, in the old testament adulterers were stoned, intercropping was unholy and ethnic cleansing was commanded. But the New Testament brought new ideas to replace Old Testament ideas. Ideas like turning the other cheek. See www.google.com/search?w=sermon+on+the+mount K2, what do you think the first century Christians did when they were attacked by Jewish authorities? They 'fled'; they didn't fight. That is what those who say they are Christians in the north should be doing - persecution of Christians did not originate in Nigeria. If you are attacked in one town, flee to another town and take the gospel with you - I think I remember a verse where Jesus said just that! |
