PoliticsRe: Double Standard in Nigeria Approach to Internal Conflicts? by Seun(mod): 6:12pm On Sep 26, 2005
It makes sense - our economy is so dependent on oil that the constant revenue we get from oil is interrupted, we will all suffer. The Government won't be able to execute important projects like maintaining law and order.
Christianity EtcRe: Can a Man With Integrity Be Both a Soldier And a Christian? by Seun(mod): 6:09pm On Sep 26, 2005
I think the simple answer is "no":
Matthew 5.38-41: You have heard that it was said, "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth." But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well; and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.

Self-defense is synonymous with "resisting one who is evil", right? The first century Christians were persecuted unjustly, but they choose to flee instead of fight, right? A Christian who dies goes to heaven where there is no more pain, right? So why disobey Jesus to defend yourself and your country? Are you suggesting that his commandments are impractical?

Well, the most important thing is for you to send in your money, because the coconut must never be allowed to become empty! As the co-treasurer of the Temple of the Sacred Coconut, I am hereby asking al of you to send me your money now.

You don't have to join right away, but if you send your money you shall be saved! grin

Wow. I didn't know he recieved so much press coverage. I normally go to SlashDot when I want to follow tech news, and I don't think they ever covered this. But seeing that it was covered by The Register and other tech news sites, I think I'll want to say that it's an interesting concept. Thanks for pointing it out!
Christianity EtcRe: Announcing: The Temple of the Sacred Coconut by Seun(mod): 8:37am On Sep 26, 2005
And I'd like to be the co-treasurer, accountant, and money-manager! So when should we start recruiting investors founding members for our new church? grin

During my recent attempt to promote a new religion, I discovered that the most important thing you need in your religion is to make sure that your doctrine about the after-life gives them something to look forward to. It seems that people are not so eager to come back as cats or babies.

My proposal is that Sacred Coconut Heaven will be the place where our converts will go after death, and:
- There will be no sickness, no death, no sorrow, no pain - but lots of coconuts to eat!
- Open marriage and swinging will be allowed in Coconut heaven, but heartbreak will be impossible!
- Every wish of every Sacred Coconut Believer will be granted, continouosly, for ever and ever!!
- Unbelievers will cease to exist after death, because the Sacred Coconut is very merciful - no hell!
- Each convert will be able to summon all unbelieving family-members to join him/her at Coconut Heaven!

What do you think?
WebmastersRe: The Million Dollar Homepage idea, by Alex Tew by Seun(mod): 7:54am On Sep 26, 2005
It's a smart idea, but Alex Pew also playing on our intelligence. By spinning this homepage as an idea to "make a million dollars", he gets a lot of links, which gives him:
- Traffic for those who have paid to feel their money is well spent.
- The opportunity to get new buyers for his space.

I believe that the Internet can be used to make millions of Naira, dollars, euros, or pounds in legitimate income. But we should not choose those whose methods are doubtful as our role models. Gimicky business model like this one cannot work for everybody, but any business in which one is providing clear, good value for customers' time and money should generate good income.
ComputersRe: Cyber Cafe Network by Seun(mod): 7:43am On Sep 26, 2005
What exactly do you intend to gain by connecting the cafes together and giving them serial numbers? Aren't they already indirectly connected via the Internet?

I'm confused! huh
PhonesRe: To Check Airtime Balance and Access Expiry Date on MTN via SMS by Seun(mod): 7:30am On Sep 26, 2005
Why don't you copy the information you got when you sent 1, 2, etc to 131 and paste it here, instead of inviting all the members of the forum to go and waste their money repeating an experiment that you've already conducted? huh

UPDATE Error on my part, cushman's experiment is not a waste of money because messages sent to 131 are free. apologies!

Why not try the manual settings which I included in my first post. I want to advice those who are using handset models from smaller manufacturers like Sagem, Bird, etc to udse the manual settings.
WebmastersRe: MySQL Connection Help by Seun(mod): 7:20am On Sep 26, 2005
You need to set the permisions properly to allow connection to a MySQL database from a remote host, but then the site will be very slow. In addition, a good web host would have a firewall setup such that it won't be possible to connect to their MySQL servers from outside their network.

So why not download MySQL server and run it locally, too? And when you say you're running it locally, do you mean on your PC?

About equityportal, I'm going to take another look at it when it's back up to verify that it's legitimate.

ComputersRe: Opera Web Browser by Seun(mod): 8:12pm On Sep 25, 2005
They have made so much money from licensing the mobile/phone version of their browser that they don't need the money from the desktop version anymore!

I think I still prefer Firefox because Opera is just too different. I like that it's compact and efficient, but I can't bear the sharp differences from the way IE and Mozilla work!

PoliticsRe: Does It Really Pay to Serve Nigeria? by Seun(mod): 7:58pm On Sep 25, 2005
Can you tell us what problem you solved? I am sure that Nairaland can find buyers for you.

In my opinion, the best way to serve Nigeria is to get rich early and then use your wealth to impact others. This is what the world's richest people are doing - first, they get rich by creating solutions that people are willing to pay for, then they start non-profits to tackle chronic societal problems like poverty, HIV, malaria. First, you make money, then you spend it!

If you have a solution that is valuable to people, and market is properly they will pay for it. Tell us more!

Music/RadioDo Nigerian Radio Stations Pay Musicians to Play Their Music? by Seun(mod): 7:21pm On Sep 25, 2005
Hello,

I was just wondering if radio stations like Cool FM and Ray Power have to pay to be able to plays the songs of our various local artists like 2Face Idibia, Styl Plus, and the numerous upcoming artists who need promotion.

Do the local radio stations get to play the songs for free in exchange for the promotion the song and artiste will get (which translates to greater CD sales and jam-packed concerts) or if they have to pay. If they have to pay for the rights to each song they play on air, who exactly do they have to pay to?

Thanks,
Seun.

I would not kill human beings to protect human property. Only when an innocent human life is at stake would I consider taking deadly action against a fellow human being. Human life is very precious, and should not be wasted unecessarily.
