How much is 4 million naira for a bank branch? If you load that in a group of ATMs it can't last more than a few hours. This is smoke & mirrors. |

GRVLagos: A massive and well placed concern on here is the issues of "agberos" in Lagos, who have state protection and cover, under my governorship we are going to change this, we are going to create a 2 year window for these mostly young men to be retrained and given useful life skills and provide them with a proper path that will be to the benefit to us all in society, through artisanship, vocations, trade, communal policing and more, many of these young men have not been giving viable and safe alternatives to live and sustain themselves, the use of them as an extra arm of the government to intimidate and extract resources from the general public has to end and will end under my governship Oga @GRVlagos, Thanks for sharing your plan for agberos in Lagos State. It seems that Lagosian-Nairalanders are sick and tired of agberos and looking to vote for a governor who will deal with them decisively. |

Good day everyone.
Today marks a change in civic engagement for the better of us all. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party Lagos state gubernatorial candidate, will be engaging with us directly through nairaland.
Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, popularly known as GRV, is a Nigerian architect, activist and politician. A Lagos indigene, his family is deeply intertwined with the history of Lagos and Nigeria.
He believes it is a privilege to serve and that is why he is here, to directly engage with the electorate of Nigeria. He will discuss his plans and vision for Lagos and more importantly answer questions in regards to governance and Lagos directly.
Thank you. If you have any questions for GRV, please ask away. He will respond to the most interesting questions. If you think someone else's question is interesting and worth responding to, please like and share it for visibility. Questions with many likes & shares are more likely to be answered. We are willing to do this for free with any candidate of any political party who is interested in engaging with Nairalanders.

owobokiri: Could it be that Emefieli who has been printing money for Buhari like a printing machine is worried that there's way too much money in circulation and might be using this policy to reign in on that? He is still printing money for Buhari to spend. If he was worried about inflation he ought to have stopped. The money he prints for Buhari is electronic money, not physical money. Therefore withdrawing notes has nothing to do with inflation. It is only going to crush the poor. |

A political scientist named Jibrin Ibrahim has exposed the naira redesign policy for what it is - a complete farce. According to him, everyone in the CBN, banks, and federal govt knows that it won't work because the mint lacks the capacity to print sufficient notes. It is an opportunity for CBN insiders to make a lot of money while appearing to fight corruption. The financial industry is playing along to avoid CBN sanctions. Currently, we are supposed to be in the process of changing our old naira to new naira notes, which involves another massive logistics challenge. Just six weeks were allocated for the change from 15 December to 31st January. To convince us that it is for real, President Buhari was displayed on television launching the new notes. When 15th December came and banks did not have the new naira notes to distribute, except for a few samples, the take-off date was pushed to 9th February. In conformity with the six-weeks allegedly needed for the swap, the end date should have been adjusted, but it was not; hence, what needed six weeks will now be done in three weeks.
Two days ago, the Central Bank warned banks to ensure they put enough new notes in their ATM machines for customers. Encouraged, I went to my bank, only to find out that they still do not have the new notes. I drew their attention to the warning of the Central Bank that they would be dealt with if they don’t give out the new notes, and the manager laughed. The Central Bank does not have the notes to give them, so the warning is just a public relations exercise, because the banks would all be afraid to expose the lies from the Central Bank for fear of repercussions, he explained.
I spoke to some people with inside information and was told essentially that the whole charade is some drama. By law, only the mint can now print our currency. However, the capacity of the mint is minuscule in relation to the volume of new notes required, as such everybody in the CBN, banks and government, know the plan will not work simply because of the capacity limitation we have. Nonetheless, we have to pretend it will work because there is a nice narrative to sell – that the currency swap will expose corrupt politicians who have stolen government money to give bribes during the coming elections, and the government is committed to its anti-corruption policy, as such it is a smart policy move to deal with corrupt politicians.
The real story is something else – some people will make a lot of money in the printing process. Central Bank staff will preside over the distribution of the scarce new notes and many will have to bribe them massively to get access to the new notes. Meanwhile, the crisis will soon become serious when markets start to breakdown as the countdown to the withdrawal comes closer. In the coming days, people will start rejecting the old notes, as the end date approaches, but there will be serious scarcity of the new ones. The pressure will mount on government and a two-month extension for the withdrawal of the old notes will be announced and repeated, again and again. Everybody knows that will be the eventual outcome, so we just love living in our narratives of delusion. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/opinion/575500-policy-making-as-make-belief-by-jibrin-ibrahim.html

Please let journalists or the NASS ask the CBN how much money they have printed so far and how much they have distributed. Also, how much old notes they plan to withdraw and how much they have withdrawn. These are the basic facts that we need in order to ascertain the nation's readiness for the withdrawal of old naira notes at the end of this month. If we don't have these facts, we can't debate sensibly on the matter. |

Written by Shaka Phillip-JonsonOne of my best friends left the Netherlands, some years ago, and moved back to Nigeria. He now lives in Lagos with his fam. So whenever I visit Lagos, he likes to show me around. And high-end bars and restaurants are often the most popular places he takes me to. His friends always like to tag along, and I often find that observing and asking them questions is always a good way to learn more about them, and life, in Nigeria. We're all in the same age bracket (late 20s and early 30s) and all of them, except me, are married and have kids.
In all the years I have visited my friend in Lagos, and hung out with him and his friends, one thing I can tell anyone, without any doubt, is that the average Nigerian has absolutely no regard for the institution of marriage, despite being super crazy about marriage and weddings. While at bars or restaurants, these guys, who have wives and kids at home, are constantly chasing girls and women. And they do it so desperately and openly, that it often leaves you in awe.
One encounter that left me shocked, was when one of the guys kept touching the waitress's waist, and the poor lady kept reminding him that he was married, to which he replied, "And so?" And I was just there thinking, "the utter disregard for this same marriage they often act like it's such an accomplishment, the sexual assault, as well as the disrespect for their partners at home. What a tragedy!"
And it's not just my best friend's friends who shocked me. When you look around these bars and restaurants, they're mostly filled with cheating Nigerian men and women. Most of them, either married, or in relationships. Sitting there, eating and drinking, while their partners are either at home, or also out there somewhere, equally cheating on them.
I think the funniest thing that happened to me, was when my best friend's friends, tried to label me "irresponsible", because I am unmarried. They said that marriage makes you "grow up". It makes you more "responsible". And that men who aren't married are neither grown nor responsible. I told him that apart from the fact that I am quite anti-marriage, cos of how patriarchal it is, I believe that, in comparison with ... ... all of them, I was the most responsible person sitting on that table. To be in a relationship with someone, means being responsible for their happiness, and one of the ways to ensure that, is to not cheat on them. My word is my bond. I do not cheat on my partners. Never!!
And it's super weird, and frankly, quite irritating, that men who so blatantly cheat on, and disrespects their wives, and the mothers of their kids, would have the nerve, to call me "irresponsible", because I am not married. I never stop thinking about it. The sheer audacity! PS: I know how the average Nigerian lacks comprehension skills, as I can see from some of the weird replies and quotes, so let me add this:
This thread isn't a particular rebuke of Nigerian men. Whether Nigerian men cheat on their women, I honestly don't give a flying Bleep. What I'm trying to share is that I don't understand how Nigerians would believe that those who aren't married are "irresponsible", but they who are all married up, have even no atom of respect for the very same institution of marriage they so pretend to "revere".
Nigerian men and women cheat on each other profusely. With the kinda determination that leaves you in shock. You can see it from the way the women commit paternity fraud left and right, and the men are all community dick left and right. Nigerian men and women deserve each other. And because of all that, I think they have no right to shame people for not wanting to get married, or call anyone "irresponsible" for not being married. Nothing gives them the right or the moral high ground.
Oh, and my best friend knows how I feel about him and his friends. 🙂 https://twitter.com/beejonson/status/1615880886414614528
