Abalado:Marketplaces have to be open for people to survive. Most of them are in open spaces where the risk of transmission is lower. If everyone in an open market wears a mask, the risk of catching the virus is quite low. It is government's role to prevent the entry of people without face-masks. Churches and mosques aren't essential because the God of Christianity and Islam doesn't live in physical buildings. He can be worshipped anywhere, even at home, because he is omnipresent. Christians and Muslims don't have to meet together physically to practice their religion. Also, churches, mosques and synagogues have caused large Coronavirus outbreaks around the world. Germany, Korea, US, India, Malaysia... As for schools, only expensive private schools have what it takes to reopen safely, and it will cost them a lot. Public schools have no chance. |
Many scientists believe the virus doesn't spread much through surfaces (fomites). Even if it did, the schools have been closed for so long (several months) that any virus in them would have been deactivated by now. The virus doesn't live primarily on tables and desks; it lives inside human beings. Teachers, students, parents, workers. This move is only going to make people feel better. It's an unscientific, hollow gesture. |
Why kind of maintenance work takes six months? [s]Silly thought: Does some genius in our government think the movement restriction will help against the Coronavirus?[/s] |
knowhowk:It spreads mainly through virus-infected droplets that are released into the air by infected people. When you inhale those droplets or if they are transferred to your mouth, nose, or eyes, you can be infected. When infected people breathe, some droplets are released. When they speak, more droplets are released. When they sing or shout, more droplets are released than when they talk quietly. When they cough or sneeze, the largest amount of droplets are released, and they can be projected through the air for several meters, possibly infecting people standing quite far away. Some droplets are relatively large and fall to the ground or nearby surfaces within seconds. Others are small and can linger in the air for minutes or hours. The virus can remain infectious on hard surfaces for days. If you touch those surfaces and pick your nose... Some Important Safety Measures, Among Others - Masks protect you from large droplets and reduce the quantity of small droplets that you may inhale. The less you inhale, the better. - Ventilation protects you from small droplets by blowing them away. Avoid meeting people indoors. If you must, open windows and doors. - Distancing is very helpful because face-masks are not perfect. In addition to wearing a mask, avoid close contact with people. - Goggles protect your eyes. Although the risk of infection through the eyes is lower, it can happen, so glasses or shades are good. - Don't let anyone (re)enter your house, shop, vehicle, or office unless they first wash or sanitize their hands and wear face-masks. This is to prevent them from infecting you directly or contaminating the air, surfaces, goods, furniture, etc in your building with their Coronavirus. What The Healthplus Pharmacy Owner Should Have Done - If someone in your family starts showing any symptoms, isolate them immediately. If you don't, everyone in the house may end up getting it. |

litaninja:That would be unfortunate, because the rich will not be safe from the Coronavirus as long as the poor have it. |
backnbeta:Noted. That was for other people, who may not know. |
ChybuzzDD:I do believe that the Coronavirus is currently spreading faster than ever due to inadequate testing by our government. However the rainy season in Southern Nigeria is the season of common cold and malaria, both of which present COVID-like symptoms, so maybe that's what you're seeing? |
The medical doctor is right, of course. The article clearly says "Gilead will charge $2,340 for a five-day course." This is for a repurposed Ebola drug that shortens your hospital stay at best and hasn't been shown to save lives. |
ghettokid1:They should try to culture the virus from his samples. Sometimes COVID-19 patients who are no longer contagious continue to test positive. |
backnbeta:A negative PCR test result for COVID-19 has little or no value. You could test negative if you had been infected but the level of virus in your body was still very low. You could be negative at the time of testing but get infected with COVID-19 on your way back home after taking the test. A negative test doesn't prove that you don't have it; it proves that there was no evidence that you had it at the time that your sample was collected. |
ECIDSGO:This is what we will eventually have to do if we follow the current trajectory. Eventually, all the hospitals and isolation centers in the country will be filled with COVID-19 patients and they will ask those that are not close to death to just stay at home. This is what happened in the UK. The problem is that people are not very good at self-isolating themselves. If you are poor, living in a crowded house, self-isolation is impossible. For those who can afford to isolate themselves, they may not do it seriously unless they know for sure that they have COVID-19. Hence, testing. |
This is too little, too late. Everything the government is doing today is what they should have done months ago. With the current trend we will have millions of cases. We have test positivity rate of about 25%; this is extremely high :- most infected people are still out there, spreading it. |
mamatwiny:You can get it through your mouth, nose, and eyes. The likelihood of being infected through your eyes is relatively low, but in high risk situations it is wise to protect your eyes too. Wear goggles, shades, your recommended glasses, or a face shield with your face-mask. They all help to various degrees. You can’t be infected through your ears unless there is a wound. Your skin is an effective barrier. |
Just enforce the face-mask rule and social distancing. Why is that so hard for them? They are the government. Govern. Enforce the bleeping rules. Don’t go for another brainless lockdown, for the love of God. We will have massive unrest if there is another lockdown. Any small mistake by a police officer and people will be on the streets. Any slight disagreement between a Muslim and a Christian and Lagos could be on fire. And the disease will spread even faster. |
Mryacks:I disagree. The fact that 11 of the 12 members of her household got the virus shows that the precautions they took were woefully inadequate. It is important to understand the disease and how it spreads and incorporate that into the precautions that you take. |
Bump. Apologies for the blocking of your post by the anti-spam bot. |
Disinfecting the environment is nice, I guess, but it lives inside infected human beings who continually release the virus as they exhale, so... |
uchrikk:False. It provided "no benefit" to those who didn't need oxygen, according to the researchers. There is no scientific reason to abuse this drug. |
seproperties:Yes. They said, "There was no benefit among those patients who did not require respiratory support" Angelfrost:What is the difference between 50 naira and 500 naira if you're on a ventilator? It will still be cheaper than other drugs, for those who need it. |
The leaders of the RECOVERY drug trial in the UK, who are testing the effects of many existing drugs on COVID-19 patients, have announced that the drug dexamethasone, which is very cheap (for now) and available in most countries (including ours), has been experimentally proven to reduce the risk of death of people with severe cases of the Coronavirus disease. They administered 6mg of dexamethasone daily (by tablet or by injection) to 2104 COVID-19 patients for ten days. After 28 days, they compared the results of this treatment to the normal treatment which 4321 other patients received. They discovered that the drug reduces the risk of death in patients who are on oxygen or on the ventilator. * For patients who were so sick that they had to be placed on a ventilator, dexamethasone reduced their risk of death from 40% to 28%. For every 8 COVID-19 patients on the ventilator treated with this drug, 1 additional life was saved. * For patients sick enough to be placed on oxygen, the risk of death dropped by from 25% to 20%. For every 25 patients on oxygen treated, 1 additional life was saved. * For patients who were not sick enough to be placed on oxygen or a ventilator, there was "no improvement" according to the researchers. Sources: - https://www.recoverytrial.net/files/recovery_dexamethasone_statement_160620_v2final.pdf (updated) - https://www.bbc.com/news/health-53061281 This is good news for Ex-Governor Abiola Ajimobi and other Nigerian COVID-19 patients in intensive care. The benefit seems modest but remember, that improvement is relative to the standard treatment in the UK. Also, note that it provided "no benefit" to most of the patients.

Armed robbers and rapists should not be sentenced to death unless they killed someone. The punishment for armed robbery and rape should be significantly more lenient than the punishment for murder. Otherwise, what incentive do heartless robbers and rapists have to exercise restraint and refrain from killing their victims? If it was up to me, I would impose sentences of up to 5 years for rapists and up to 10 years for armed robbers who didn’t kill anyone. I would reserve the death penalty for people convicted of first degree murder based on very solid evidence. |
KaptainAfrika:One of the lessons of the COVID-19 crisis is the understanding that the US government does many stupid things too; so this means nothing. |
Price gouging laws are mostly stupid. If something is really expensive and you try to restrict the price, it will disappear from the market. I want to be able to buy face-masks anytime I need them even if they are expensive. I don't want to die of Coronavirus because the FCCPC is flexing. madamori9:Cynical officials do things that make no sense to win the support of the uninformed everywhere. How do you determine the acceptable price? |
Is the government now in charge of setting the price of face-masks and sanitizers? If so, what is the price range that they deem acceptable? ![]() It is important for lawmakers and other government officials to understand Economics so they won't be doing things that are totally unreasonable. |
hopefulLandlord:mukina2, what happened here? We know for a fact that people watch La Liga matches especially the ones involving the top clubs. |
StubbornGENIUS: joseph1832:My statement is a bit of a cheap shot and I may remove it. I’m sure they have their reasons. I think they should come up with rules that reduce the rate of infection very much but are as non-intrusive as they could possibly be. I am ok with saying people should be spaced out and everybody should wear masks, and limiting the number of people that can attend a service, but I am not ok with dictating how long a church service should be. This goes into the territory of dictating how people should practice their religion, which is unacceptable in a free democratic country. I can imagine how they arrived at the decision, but I don’t like it one bit. As far as I am concerned, large gatherings of any type, whether religious or recreational, should not be held, period. Numerous outbreaks around the world have been traced to churches and mosques. You have large numbers of people in enclosed spaces, spewing their germs into the air as they shout and sing, all over the country. Even if they have masks, they will probably remove them when they start sweating during praise worship. The era of services with thousands of people in large auditoriums is over until we achieve herd immunity through vaccination. Churches should reorganize themselves as house fellowships with maybe 20 to 50 members in each branch so that if one member is found to be infected with COVID-19, it will be easy to test the others. I will update this post after educating myself further about the PTF’s new rules. |
Because the foreign leaders that our leaders normally copy ideas from clearly don’t know what they are doing, our leaders have been forced to come up with their own ideas, and this is the result. I don’t like it. *UPDATED* |
Hyinkar97:Which thread is this? |
No mask ![]() |
anwarajnr:The rules the world was following at the beginning of the crisis were wrong. They didn’t recommend face-masks, etc because of the WHO’s reckless disinformation. |
