In Nigeria, it is taken for granted that any body who calls him/her self a programmer knows the PHP language. PHP rocks. There are thousands of already written free software implemented in the Language. There is a hug support base…probably the biggest for all web programming languages. And most importantly, PHP has a low learning curve.
However, except in the hands of those who know the language thoroughly (and because they know it thoroughly, they know when not to use it) PHP might be a bad language for any slightly huge project. Here is why.

Bad Concurrency
As a newbie, I churned out more programs in a week than I knew what to do with. Every program seemed so easy and I kept wondering why I would ever need to use Java or C# to write a web app. I then got a contract to implement an app which facilitates file sharing. This was no big deal. In a matter of days, the app was ready (with a lot of bad, undocumented code of course).
There was a problem though. Once up to 100 persons tried sharing files of (5mb+) at about the same time, a lot of errors sprung up ranging from gateway time out to connection to server lost. Once this happened, the user had to start over.

I realized what I needed was called “multi-threading”. This would have allowed the files to be queued for upload, eaten away in bits and pushed to another queue of files ready to be sent to clients that request for them. All this would be so efficiently controlled that a thousand people can exchange files, and the user can see a message like “too many people are uploading, your file is uploading but going much slower”. Or it could just show a progress bar (like google drive). I will also be able to limit the number of active threads, keeping some activities in pause till more threads are freed. The load on the server would have been so controlled,

PHP is just bad for this. There are libraries of course that simulate this by instantiating another PHP Instance. But you’d be simulating and you’d eventually move over to langauges that offer multithreading features natively.


Speed
There are lots of goody goody resources out there telling us that PHP’s speed is just as good as any other language. I wont argue. I will just show you facts and let you decipher the truth for yourself.
PHP is an interpreted language. Every time a page is requested in PHP, it is compiled and then the compiled code is executed. This means that your code is read from disk first, compiled, and then the compiled code is executed. Compare this to a compiled language like C# where the process for responding to a request is just ….execute!


Respect
Respect is everything in the lives of hackers. Introducing yourself as a coder whose primary language is PHP makes you look weak. This will affect the circle of programmers you maintain. The circle of programmers you maintain will affect the opportunities you are able to attract. If I may brag a little, rumour around town has it that am kinda a good coder. If you want to work on a project with me….I’d really love java or C# or C++. Its stupid….but you know…hackers value bragging rights.


Opportunity
Even though the job you will be doing most times will be restricted to PHP, many job offers will list perceived hardcore languages like C++, C, C#, Java as vital to the job just to scare off coders they perceive as unserious.

As tempting as it is to keep using PHP for all projects, Nigerian coders should work hard to stretch their horizon beyond it because when the game gets big...the language gets weak.

Simple laws of demand and supply. ITS better fuel is readily available and costly than when it's scarce. If Nigerian entrepreneurs can break out of the toll gate business model mentality, they can do same. No theory. What are they doing? Man you're going too far with these entrepreneurship sh*t. Now that you're a" full stack entrepreneur" won't you want to have an employee working for your "big company"? You're not being realistic, no one is saying entrepreneurship is a bad idea, but for crying out loud, if you know there are other works you can do out there that will earn you more pay than the business you're running won't you quit and opt for it? The problem is that this 500,000 looks looks like a lot of money when you don't have it but expenses rise with income levels. In addition, your rate of increase can't double, you will be lucky if it keeps up with inflation. The guy starting off on his own will earn less for a while but when he gets traction, it will roar. The beauty of investment income is it tends to be inflation adjusted and it's different payout periods allow you to allocate it to different purposes.

500,000 is not a lot of money when you get it.

But if you don't have Capital to start a business, get a job. But be conscious of what you are doing on the train and have a clear plan when to get off.

I never said 500,00 money was "big" or "enough" It was a reply to your earlier comment where you said salary earning is a sure way to long term poverty - I'm just trying to cite the 500k example to prove that it's not all salary jobs that is as bad as you think.

And how many moderate businesses do you think you can venture into in this time of economic recession that will earn you that much regularly per month? Truth is, Regular income is always better than irregular income. You can't put all your eggs in one basket in this age & time . Most people work to earn regular monthly income and run their business in the background. Nobody is that foolish to be depending on a single income in 2016!.

That was how 1 guy was persuading me to join one Helping Hands that lots of benefits ( ranging from laptops, cars, millions and paid trips abroad and so on) awaits me if i join. I asked him to snap and send me the picture n receipt of the laptop they(H2i) gave him to convince me only for him to tell me he just joined and is in level 2(stage 1), i laughed hard o. I asked him, if it takes level 2 with about 5-7 stages to complete how many will it take to get the car? The guy said i should calm down o, that when i join, i will know how it is being done.. He called me and we talked for 16 mins (stil on the convincing matter), sent me pics of people who were given cheques, a video of a woman who won a car. After much questions and answer session with his inability to answer some questions, he said i was silly and i told him that If trying to protect my hard earned cash(even if it is #6,600) and my interest makes me silly, let it be.. These guys can sweet talk you ehn, but only the gullible will fall for them.. It is good to be optimistic, but balance it with reality and you are good to go.. At last we had a deal which is, i'll join anytime he receives his laptop from h2i. I'll post pics of our conversation when i fix my phone.

Thats the thing about them, they have the sweetest and most convincing words you'll ever imagine a nigerian man can have . I have never fallen for them cos I'm just too strong willed for that bullshit. I believe in working for my own money(something like rendering a service and getting money in return) not some sit down at home and get money quick scheme . Its this mindset that makes all their sweet talks a turn off for me . Only desperate and frustrated people who have no mind of their own fall for their talks.
