If only Nigerians can go off DSTV for a while at the end of the season.
TV/Movies / Re: Dstv Explains Hike In Tarrifs by seunspice(m): 2:29pm On Mar 18, 2011
In as much as there seems to be no viable standard competition to DSTV now, we would be subjected to their ludicrous charging system. What irks me most is that i leave home as early as 5am every workday and don't get back until 9:30 on the average or 8pm when there are matches to be played and i dont watch too much apart from footie on weekends too. so i accumulate unnecessary charges that i dont get to use. If it was pay per view i wont have such issues.
The next line of action would be to get the best Free to Air combo and forgo DSTV. Question is 'Can i really forgo the footie?'

@BJGOKE, A mail was sent to all subscribers informing them of the reviewed charges. I am on the premium bouquet and my charge has moved up to 10,300 from 9,500 although the mail also states that i am to pay 10k for the next 3 months after which the 10,300 comes into full effect.

Opposing DSTV in Nigeria is like opposing the PDP, the alternatives are just not on the same level. DSTV's monopoly of the major content in the market can only be broken by an action by Nigerians to induce favourable government legislations against 'TV rights' monopoly. The situation where only one provider controls the rights to the premier league is bad enough, talkless of other soccer contents like the FA cup, CHamps league etal.
join the crusade, Pay TV must be realistic TV. And what the heck happened to pay per view?

Dear Valued Subscriber

Re: Annual Subscription price increase for DStv

It has come to our attention that there are some queries around the DStv subscription price increase that comes into effect on 1 April, and we would like to ensure that the truth is communicated to you, our valued subscriber. Most of all we would like to reassure you of our best intentions and reaffirm our commitment to Nigeria, which is clearly demonstrated through our continuous investments in the country.

In the last 5 years we have only had one price increase 18 months ago. Since then, despite the high inflation rate averaging around 11.95%, we have not increased subscription prices until now. Our current subscription price increase percentage is well below the inflation average with a 5 to 8% increase on DStv Premium bouquet.

Additionally, we have added a total of 18 new channels over the last 18 months to the DStv bouquets, thus giving you, our subscriber, even more value and choice than ever before. These channels include channels made in Nigeria and showcased in Africa - displaying Nigeria's ingenuity and artistry; these include AfricaMagic Yoruba, AfricaMagic Hausa, NN24 and Sound City. The range of newly launched international channels includes Discovery World, iConcerts and Afro Music.

Over and above this, MultiChoice is the only operating pay TV company that has invested in the latest television technology with High Definition (HD) television and launched the following channels - M-Net HD, SuperSport HD, i-Concerts HD, Discovery Showcase and SuperSport HD Extra - thus ensuring that Nigeria is up there with the best internationally in terms of access to the latest television experience and technology. The introduction of HD channels and the HD PVR decoder has revolutionized the television viewing experience of our subscribers. But that is not the end of our increased offering - in April we intend to add another three exciting new channels; so please keep a look out for these announcements.

There is currently no other pay television company in Nigeria that has made as much investment in the production of local content and infrastructure. Over the last three years the business has invested over $100 million in the coverage of Nigerian sports, including basketball and football; has bought the latest outside broadcast (OB) vans to show live events, built studios and trained technicians. Our investment has not only been in sport, but also in Nigerian productions such as Tinsel, Naija Sings, Jacobs Cross, Comedy Club live in Lagos, Moments with Mo and Jara. We are also excited about the upcoming Big Brother Africa which has made many Nigerian stars!

Our mission is to make pay television accessible to all Nigerians and to offer our subscribers a range of DStv bouquets which deliver both world class Nigerian and international content. We have stuck to this mission and our lowest cost bouquet - DStv Access - currently offers more channels than our nearest rival's premium bouquet for only N1,500.

There has also been propaganda in the market that the price in Nigeria is more expensive than other countries, we would like to point out that Nigeria's subscription of $66 is 21% less than the subscription paid in South Africa which is currently R559 ($80.12) (SA has had annual increases). It is also important to note that the DStv service in Nigeria has the most number of channels, including HD and Nigerian channels.

MultiChoice Nigeria is a Nigerian company and is the only pay television operator that has put significant investments into the upliftment and development of communities - this we have done through our schools projects and support of the Sickle Cell Foundation. We have also helped build sustainable small and medium businesses around the industry with the financing and training of a DStv SuperDealer network which are owned and operated regionally by independent Nigerian entrepreneurs to support the DStv customer experience for you, our valued subscribers.

DStv has been in Nigeria for 15 years and has made massive investments to enable us to provide a world-class home television entertainment experience, we have many exciting new plans for the future to ensure you receive the best possible experience from DStv. In order to ensure the continued viability of our business and a marginal return on the investments that we have made, and are continuing to make, we unfortunately have to increase subscription prices from time to time. As has happened, we have always endeavoured to keep these as low as possible, whilst giving you so much more.

We are most grateful for your continued support and will continue to provide a service that is consistent, efficient, and accessible.

Yours sincerely

Education / Re: OAU-Ife University Closed Down Indefinitely by seunspice(m): 3:12pm On Feb 25, 2011
When i was a student in Ife in the 90s and i had to spend 7 years for a 5 year course, i hated the place, i detested the system i abhorred virtually everything about it other than my pals and other alliances i made. However, a decade down the line, i can't but thank God i went to Ife. Having changed jobs 4 times in that period i see Ife alumni running things in almost all spheres of life. In my office, Ife grads are highly respected, even though the respect is mutual for every federal university Grad, there is just something about Ife.
I dont know what the level is as we speak, but i believe Ife can live on its past Glory for quite a while to come. Faborode and his cohorts are only trying what Omole et al tried unsuccessfully to achieve back then. However, greatest Ife students, its what you sweat for that you appreciate most. If the increment can be negotiated reasonably it should not be rejected in totality.
My 2 cents.

Funniest thing is i once rooted for GEJ but within six months i have seen that he is as clueless as the word as regards the Nigerian situation. A president that has no public statement nor action for daily genocide in Jos does not deserve a place in leadership.
Politics / Re: Fashola Rips Goodluck To Shreds! by seunspice(m): 12:10pm On Feb 11, 2011
Lets break this down real quick, The president used the word 'rascals' and claimed that the PDP must rescue the South West from 'these rascals'.
1.    Now how many states in the SW are PDP governed? i believe just Oyo and Ogun except you want us to bring in Kwara into this equation. So he was referring to the 'rascals' in Lagos, Ekiti, Ondo and Osun.
2.    Are the citizens and residents of these PDP states reaping the dividends of democracy? No would be the outright answer. As a former resident of Ibadan i dread visiting the city these days. Insecurity is at its peak, rascality is the order of the day, strikes by Teachers, doctors and other civil servants amongst others, infrastructure decay, Not even the major federal road from Ojoo to the lagos road toll plaza (former) has been fixed. in all honesty an average Oyo resident would tell you only croonies of the rulling faction of the PDP would have anything positive to say about the government there. Its almost the same story in Ogun state where the use of Jazz (juju) occultic fetishes etc has been the order of the day in this day and age.
3.    Oyo and Ogun states have the biggest intra party issues in the SW. We have just witnessed a power play that would make the No4 citizen inelligible for a rerun because of power tussles here and there and we should not forger the issues in ibadan where NURTW goons are used to claim superiority among the political class.

Judging by all these, if the president refers to the non PDP govs in the south west as rascals, then rascality pays. W#e have seem the motion in the movements of the fashola administration. i am not an ACN fan, but in Lagos at least we have something in the semblance of leadership. We all see how we are moving towards a steady direction. The PDP has nothing to show for 12 years at the helm, other than Bomb blasts, religious crisis and unguided verbal missiles from brainless politicians. Not that the other parties fare better, but the extended rigged stay of the PDP has made us see their flaws visibly.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Wenger Wins World Coach Of The Decade by seunspice(m): 4:43pm On Jan 12, 2011
I laughed when i first heard this story. Arsene Wenger is definitely one of the greatest coaches of this generation but it is contrary to the obvious to opine that he was the best coach over the last decade. While i am neither a Porto, Chelsea, Inter or Real Madrid Fan, it is obvious that a coach who transvered all these clubs without losing a league match at home and winning loads of trophies along the way would rank as the best coach of the decade. Don't lets forget also that within this period, he has won the champs league twice with 2 different clubs.
Arsene Wenger gets the credit for maintaining the same level of play quality over the last decade without varying playing staff and a paltry budget. However, overall team success is determined by trophies in the cabinet and not consistency without trophies. In my own opinion, the most outstanding thing Wenger did was going unbeaten in a season and i dont even see my darling Man U doing that this season , Even at that, that is way off the mark of rating Wenger as the best coach in the last decade.
But it would be stating the obvious that Wenger would rate in my top 3 coaches anytime anyday anywhere anyhow.

Me thinks the poster is not basically talking about fuel efficiency but total maintenance costs comparison. I would advice you go for the Murano as most folks in here have said. The fact that the average cost of a Range's shocks is about 700k scares me nuts. My friend had a little accident with his LR3. Cost him 1.4 m to fix it. If you want luxury and must ride a 4*4 without all the attendant luxury costs, pick the Murano. its the closest you would get.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / My Assessment Of The Premier League Teams So Far In The 2010/2011 Season by seunspice(m): 10:38am On Oct 04, 2010
Hi fellow fans, Kindly note that i am writting this as a Man U fan. I am however not blindfolded my my fan affiliation. I am just trying to state the fact as it seems. I generally stand corrected.

Chelsea FC: Call them whatever you like, the blues are flying. Did i say flying? Yes they are, however not at your average speed. They are cruising at supersonic speed. Forget about the loss to Man City the other day, that was just a bad day in the office, which might still happen a few more times this season but would definitely be far inbetween. In fact it is to other teams detriment that Chelsea lost that game, they would only look inwards and reinvent themselves. This team plays with a swagga i last saw in the unbeatable Arsenal team of some seasons back. They have the belief, a world class coach who knows what he is doing and the team is made up of friends, everyone know what his job is and is doing it well,  There is healthy competition for places in the team ,  i could go on and on. But honestly come May 2011. i would be very surprised if Chelsea does not win the title. Very very surprised. And as a Man U fan, you can be sure i am not happy saying this. However i have to state the obvious.
Prediction: Champions Again, Champs league semis

Manchester United: My darling team has endured another lacklustre  start to the season, yeah it is in us to start slow and pick up later, we have players coming back from injury and players going to the op table (a la Valencia and Rooney?). but my biggest fear for the season is would other teams wait for us to gain form. The biggest problem is in the midfield and if there are ominous signs, it is the fact that our over reliance on the golden generation might come back to haunt us this season. Scholsey and Giggsy would only get game time every other game and the willingness of the younger crop of midfielders to step up to the plate seems unconvincing. Carrick is totally out of form and fletcher seems to be enjoying being the hatchet man role. overall there is little or no creativity from the middle and we have to rely on fast wing play to hit the opposition, i honestly don't see that working against teams like Arsenal and Chelsea. In fact i dont want to face any of them now and if by any miracle that works, i don't see it working in the champs league. I see a couple of buys in the January transfer window, hope it wont be too late then.
Prediction: Champions league spot, second round stage of the Champs league

Arsenal: Total football may not have yielded dividends yet at the Emirates but i see this season as Arsenals brightest chance yet. With a little luck with Injuries i still see Arsenal challenging for the title. Non Arsenal fans i am sure would laugh at this submission but i have faith in these guys. Against Chelsea yesterday the boys made the champions look a little off colour and when you go to Standford Bridge and peg back Chelsea, you have the guts and guts is what is needed in big games. I want to remain in the Wenger side of the divide and look forward to the lads performing the needful this season. The boys would definitely win something this season, might not be the premier league though, but my money is on the gunners winning a trophy this season. Arsenal fans should pray for less injury worried to key players. If the team is this ok now, what happens when Van Persie, Bendtner, Fab the passer and the other injured lads are back in full swing? However, Prof Arsene, Sign a keeper in January or make my predictions go with the wind.
Prediction 2nd or 3rd. CHamps league Quarters.

Manchester City: This is the team that scares me most of the lot as a Man U fan, This is a team with intent, determination and  focus. They may not turn up against the journey men, but a note of warning has been sounded to the cream of the league with the defeat of Chelsea, write City off at your own peril. The extra time winner against City by Owen last season just shut out a team on the ascendancy and to think thay they have not hit consistency yet? City are in it for the big prize fellas and you should not count them out of the reckoning at any point in time. With an experienced manager and motivated Lads, backed up by (Arab) cash ,  a combination that has worked at the bridge.
Prediction: Champions league slot

Liverpool FC: So sad to see the Kop end gloomy so far. It would be safe to say Rafa + American owners spell doom. It would take the whole season to stem the tide at Anfield and as a United Fan i am glad. We might not win the leage this season, but as long as Liverpool does not win it, Its ok. We both live to fight another day. The Anfield faithful would be comforted with a Uefa place at the end of the season, but Just ,

I would be back with my opinion on the second layer teams Fulham, Everton, Tottenham, Aston Villa etc I am sure you have your opinions too.

Sports / Re: Mikel Rated Second Best Ball Passer In Premier League. by seunspice(m): 12:23pm On Sep 20, 2010
Fellow fans,
Understanding Mikel's pattern of play at Chelsea is understanding the Chelsea team itself. As a Man U fan i hate the way Chelsea has been ruthless this season, but Chelsea's result is achieved with everyone playing their parts in the big puzzle. Mikel's role in that team is to tackle, break down opposition attacks and spread midfield passes to wear down the opposition and initiate moves for his team. His role i believe involves moving area between the back line and the attacking midfielders. Chelsea is where they are now because every player in the team understands his role and plays it to near perfection and that is why you can't but feel the swagger in their play. I honestly hope they are beaten soon , but in all honesty, looking at all the teams so far after few games i am yet to see the team to knock them off this stride. It might require some form of divine intervention.
My 2 cents.
Mikel is ok for his role and guess what? he doesn't need to be the best in the world to do it as long as the team keep winning, he has definitely grown to avoid being carded every other game. I wish him the best but not Chelsea. cheers

Came across this thread and i laughed hard in french. I am a die hard United and Madrid fan, but it would be stupidity to compare those two. CR7 is not even anywhere around the likes of Messi, how come the comparison with the greatest striker that ever lived. The only Accolade missing from R9 which CR7 has is winning the champs league, but please come back to this thread when CR7 has truely proved himself to be the best of his generation and lets continue this discuss. For now he is one of the pretenders hoping to be the best while R9 was clearly the best of his generation.

Guys,
The students made a mess of the whole scenario by this video evidence, note that only the girl made mention of anything that had to do with 'being sexually used' in the video. Her reference to the act can even be used against her at the court cause she admitted to having given sex for grades before this incident.
The lecturer could well argue that it was willful sex between 2 consenting partners that was exploited by some students to 'swindle him'. If you would take the law into your hands (which we must all do at one tme or the other), make sure you have your facts and your butt covered. The students were really greedy.
I even find it strange calling those lots students. I find it hard to believe that tertiary students would behave that way. SSSCE, JAMB and POST UME exams have really failed us.
In conclusion, the fact needs be told. The lecturer bit more that what he could chew, such goats should be castrated and left to hang by their schlungs till it quits erecting.
Peace!

Nigeria withdraws from football events for two years By Felix Onuah

June 30, 2010 04:35PM

Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan has suspended the national soccer team from international competition for the next two years following their poor performance in the World Cup, a senior adviser said on Wednesday.

"Mr President has directed that Nigeria will withdraw from all international football competition for the next two years to enable Nigeria to reorganise its football," Ima Niboro, a special adviser to Goodluck Jonathan, told reporters.

"This directive became necessary following Nigeria's poor performance in the ongoing FIFA World Cup."

Nigeria were knocked out in the first round.

I don't blame Wale Scott for anything, i have interviewed graduates who could barely speak English, Computer science grads who couldn't name 5 PC accessories etc.
The rot in the Nigerian system makes you feel you know all while in reality you know little. Don't be surprised, some presenters on sports radio might not even know how many teams play in the EPL. Furthermore, most Nigerian sports casters know very little about sports and when they do, you can be sure its only about football. Wale has always been an average and with years of experience and the hype around WOZA 2010 i feel every comment. But its TV folks and 90% of TV content is make belief, even your best reality shows.

We all shiver when we hear Argentina because our brains interprete Argentina to be Messi + Tevez + Higuain + Aguero + Others. For me its simply dejavu. This was where we were in France 98 against Spain and we were outplayed but won. There is nothing the Naija spirit can't achieve, the problem is the Naija spirit is mostly never seen in positive ventures.
However, if there is any match the Eagles would perform well in it is this match. The Messi fans would be in for a thrill because he would score his usual goal against Nija but Argentina would NOT WIN that match. I see all the equations being quadratically balanced in Naija's favour.
