You guys berra leave Igwe1 alone oh! Don't you know he is the Patron Saint of brainless car buyers! Without him, they will twisting like broken kites in the wind.

Sure, Sure. . . they are probably adults seeing as they are buying cars but that doesn't count here.

Please don't let the fact that they are good at making their own decisions and have done so for the better part of their lives deceive you.

When it comes to buying cars online, these SENSIBLE ADULTS with SOUND DECISION MAKING SKILLS become complete retards, babes in the woods, brainless and clueless mugus who need Igwe1.

So y'all berra recognize and join me in hailing Igwe1, the man who doesn't know when to say. . . WHEN!!

Christianity EtcRe: The truth your pastor would not tell you about tithes by SisiJinx: 3:54am On Dec 06, 2008
Enigma:
Yes Pastor Aio, I agree.

I always thought that even if Kunle used a wrong choice of words in saying "it is wrong to tithe", his real point is much clearer. Indeed while the onus is on him to express himself accurately, I think his greater point is much clearer and could have been easily comprehended by an objective reader.

I think the fundamental point does remain: that the continued yoke and burden being placed on misguided or misinformed (or even uninformed) Christians by most modern teachings on "tithing" really need to be challenged vigorously and continuously. One should not allow semantics or nit-pickings regarding choice of words and pedantic gyrations to divert attention away from this real and pressing matter.

Of course if someone, having the full facts and understanding them, chooses to "tithe" in the way that it is taught predominantly today, that is their choice and they should not necessarily be castigated. However, it is a different matter where people are deceived, bullied or abused into succumbing to false superstitions (i.e. blessing and/or curse), mostly with the aim of fleecing them.
Couldn't agree more!!!!

And I doubt those who have the full facts and understanding yet still choose to tithe, will feel castigated.

kay9:
Bravo, Ayo. Bravo. Your story left me grim; do you understand? Grim. I can remember only two works that have given me that feeling of crawling awe/horror before - a novel simply titled "Juju" that I read way back in high school (I don't even remember the author's name); and Enya's Braveheart sound track (yes, a song). Stephen King, Bloch, LeGuin, Rice - they all good, very good in fact, but none of them has precipitated that feeling in me yet. Maybe it's because your story truly defines 'horror' in the Nigerian way - you know, concepts like "wicked fate" - so wickedly unfortunate and crude and heartless and diabolic, and oh so real. I salute your heroine's courage at the face of the sea, with her demons screaming at the shadows of her subconscious.
Bravo!

But hey, that's not to say the story doesn't couldn't do with a little tickering. iice was right: your paragraphs at the beginning (Mami-water, Xmas, Benin, masquerades) didn't quite connect. Mind, I don't mean removing 'em entirely - just "repackage" them so they bond more strongly to the main story.

And your style of breaking the story into three titled parts - why not use a free-flowing flash-back style? Just a line of asterisks when you want to link back to start of the story, instead sub-titles. It's just my view, though.

P.S: You have to learn to ignore people who don't understand certain forms of literature - people who derogate stories simply because it offends them. Replying such posts is giving credence to their . . .umm, well, uninformed, lopsided views. wink

Temi de, I need an explanation or thought on this.  . .

Hadith Number 4205, Book 017 of Al-Bukhari

'Abdullah b. Buraida reported on the authority of his father that Ma'iz b. Malik al-Aslami came to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and said: Allah's Messenger, I have wronged myself; I have committed adultery and I earnestly desire that you should purify me. He turned him away. On the following day, he (Ma'iz) again came to him and said: Allah's Messenger, I have committed adultery. Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) turned him away for the second time, and sent him to his people saying: Do you know if there is anything wrong with his mind. They denied of any such thing in him and said: We do not know him but as a wise good man among us, so far as we can judge. He (Ma'iz) came for the third time, and he (the Holy Prophet) sent him as he had done before. He asked about him and they informed him that there was nothing wrong with him or with his mind. When it was the fourth time, a ditch was dug for him and he (the Holy Prophet) pronounced judg- ment about him and he wis stoned. He (the narrator) said: There came to him (the Holy Prophet) a woman from Ghamid and said: Allah's Messenger, I have committed adultery, so purify me. He (the Holy Prophet) turned her away. On the following day she said: Allah's Messenger, Why do you turn me away? Perhaps, you turn me away as you turned away Ma'iz. By Allah, I have become pregnant. He said: Well, if you insist upon it, then go away until you give birth to (the child). When she was delivered she came with the child (wrapped) in a rag and said: Here is the child whom I have given birth to. He said: Go away and suckle him until you wean him. When she had weaned him, she came to him (the Holy Prophet) with the child who was holding a piece of bread in his hand. She said: Allah's Apostle, here is he as I have weaned him and he eats food. He (the Holy Prophet) entrusted the child to one of the Muslims and then pronounced punishment. And she was put in a ditch up to her chest and he commanded people and they stoned her. Khalid b Walid came forward with a stone which he flung at her head and there spurted blood on the face of Khalid and so he abused her. Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) heard his (Khalid's) curse that he had huried upon her. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Khalid, be gentle. By Him in Whose Hand is my life, she has made such a repentance that even if a wrongful tax-collector were to repent, he would have been forgiven. Then giving command regarding her, he prayed over her and she was buried.
These were the only two stoning incidents ever mentioned in regards to Zina and it is from the Hadith, Stoning is also a Sharia law (but meant to be used in societies where there is no poverty and corruption. . . right?) and nowhere in the Koran is does it say people should be stoned to death.

So what gives?

@ Pilgrim.1
I admire your Bible knowledge, I do but I have to say, sometimes you take nitpicking (for lack of a better word) to an extreme and it has a way of distracting from the issue at hand.

Majority of us are Nigerians, which means we have slightly similar experiences, similar understanding of certain words, phrases and contexts (especially when it comes to Religion). You asked “Why do many Christians have this mentality that "tithes" is always and specifically 10%?”   We think so because that’s what we’ve been taught right from the moment we could tell the difference between a 1 Naira note and a 5 Naira note. Since this is an informal setting (as opposed to writing a dissertation for publication), I think it is okay to speak from the point of view of these similarities instead of the point of view what might be universally correct. When the Author says “Should we stop paying tithes?” most of us already know what he means and if we need confirmation or clarification, all we have to do is read further down.

I think instead of picking on how a certain word or phrase is used correctly or incorrectly, you could help us understand what these terms mean in their varied applications and how tithes are not specifically 10% and may include other variables below and above that percentage, how whether one argues that people may give 10% or less (or any other percentage for that matter), it is still a percentage of whatever you have as total.

Now I know that you might be pushing for people to be precise in their posts so people can understand what the topic is about (a nice gesture, don’t get me wrong) but you also have to understand that people aren’t dense, we may not be Bible scholars but we have the basic reading comprehension skills. I sincerely believe if anyone had read further down, they would have gotten the real gist of the topic being discussed. Having to go through off point verbiage on semantics or when and how to use the right verbs, pronouns, adjective, structure, definition etc, can be tiring and just makes a reader want to give up reading the thread. . . which if you think about it, is the opposite of what you are really pushing for.

Thanks.

Christianity EtcRe: The truth your pastor would not tell you about tithes by SisiJinx: 2:48am On Dec 04, 2008
A few months ago, I was at a friend’s church and during the tithes and offering time, instead of the usual singing and dancing, the ushers placed the offering buckets in front of the church. Then the pastor announces that tithes givers should come up and drop their money envelops. They did and then stood there for special prayers for tithe givers. When that was done and over with, we went to back to the normal singing and dancing for offering.

Of course I had to ask what that was all about and my friend told me that they started doing it like that because the Pastor said people have not been paying their tithes and those whose accounts showed they hadn’t paid tithes got letters in the mail, much like you would from a creditor but worded more churchy.

For the sake of propriety, I won’t post a copy of the letter because I am not about pointing fingers, I only posted this because I read in one of the comments that tithes payers don’t have a gun to their heads forcing them to pay.

You don’t need to put a gun to someone’s head for them to pay tithes when you can embarrass and/or guilt them into paying it.

Even I see many Christians belives, from the Bible that anything goes in the "bedroom." Islam has restrictions and restraints. Of course, many a muslim may not follow them. But that is not the issue here. We are talking about the two books; Qur'aan and Bible as it relates to sexual morality!
Okay, I concede. . . the Koran is more explicit than the Bible when it comes to punishment.

The Issue here is your statement about the morality of Christians. This is what you said "The sexual morality of Christianity is not what a Muslim should emulate" and THIS is what I had a problem with from the onset.

I don't understand how you can say "Yes, some people don't follow them" for the Muslims yet paint the entire Christian Population as immoral because it does not state in the Bible that offenders should be flogged.

How can you ignore the fact that despite the Koran being very explicit on the punishment for Zina, some people still do it and look down your nose at Christians because the Bible doesn’t have such explicit punishment?

Are you saying having the punishments explicitly written down is what matters? Se yen la fe je ni? I thought the priority here was following the commandment about fornication?

Punishment explicitly written down – Some people still disobey

Punishment not explicitly written down – Some People still disobey

I ask again. . . se yen lafe je ni?

Re: Your Parenting Example
I’m sorry but things are not this black or white, not even close. I head a Youth group and I’ve seen how so not black or white they are. We have this boy. . . 14 yrs old. The first day he joined the group everyone knew that Yes, mun shiga uku. . . not the boy oh but his mother. She came in with her own list of rules of what her son is allowed to do, If we are going to the movies. . . he can only see a certain kind, if we are going on field trips, he can only go certain place. She expects him home at soso time, she wants this wants that. I mean she was just so with her rules and woe betide anyone who mistakenly disobeys them. . . a tongue lashing like you’ve never seen, will be their portion. Everyone was on point with her, except her son. One time, he was running late. . . almost past time his mom said he should be home and I was hurrying him up, he tells me to relax. . . it’s not a big deal, patapata she will disconnect his internet for one week. He is used to it, he said coz that’s what she always does. He knew what he would get if he broke any of her rules and all he had to do was weigh what he was in the mood to take. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard kids say “I’m gonna be grounded for 2 weeks for this, let me kuku enjoy every minute of it.”

This might seem trivial but it goes to the core of the matter at hand. It’s not about having the punishment written down or spelt out, it is about teaching people why this is not a good thing. . . why it displeases God simple.

Look, I am not here to say one religion is better than the other, I just want you. . . YOU to be very careful in how you state things because if you let your bias override logic, it renders everything you have to say useless. One can be loyal to their side and still think straight.

One last thing, the guy demanding sex. . . isn’t he muslim? Should we then say, oh no! The Morality of Muslims is not what any Christian should emulate coz despite the fact that they have the punishments for immorality spelt out in the Koran, this boy still wants to commit Zina?

Does that make any sense?

Ibi nu mi is on the odi because I expect more from you and yes, I know you owe me nothing.

This is so sad!

It’s good you realize how awful you’ve been to her and you want to make it up but you can’t just say “I love you, oya come back home”. There are questions that need to be answered. . . questions that, if I was in your wife’s shoes, would be racing through my head.

1) Why do you want her back? Is it because you miss and love her or just out of a sense of duty?

2) Who do you miss? Do you miss your emotional punching bag or do you miss the woman you once loved?

3) If she comes back, what next? I mean she still can’t get pregnant. . . how are you going to handle this? How has your outlook on the matter changed. . . can you accept that you won't be a father, at least not with her as the mother.

4) How emotionally ready are you to seek alternative routes like surrogacy, adoption or invitro?

It’s gone beyond saying I love you, I love you. There are real life issues that needs to be addressed and I believe answering these questions will go a long way in helping you formulate a way to get her back.

I wish you both all the very best.
