By the way, Hauwa, you used the term "Walahi". Typical of Muslims,  used to show honesty in your words, and meaning "Allah is my witness". Of course, this is not to say that you're Muslim,  in that I've noticed that many Arabic words have in time become standard within the Hausa language.
Very observant of you!!  grin grin

See,  majority of the Hausas in Nigeria are Muslims, who read the Quran, so it it’s only natural that some Islamic (What you call Arabic) words would seep into our every day speak.

Eg

Madallah! – Excellent or perfect (Usually used when you get a desired result

Dan Allah – Please

Assalam Alaikum  -  Means peace be upon you. . . greeting uttered by someone who is about to enter another person’s home

Wa Aleykum As-Salaam,  which means and upon you be peace is the response from the person whose home is being entered

Wassalaam  - Goodbye

Allah kia ye – God forbid (said when you are ward off evil things, thoughts or deeds)

Allahu akbar – Mostly used to express surprise, loosely translated means "Great God/Good God"

Bismillah- often used to express shock or surprise. It is a short version of a long phrase which when loosely translated is equivalent to the

English/Christian “Lord have Mercy!”

Allah ya ishe mu or sometimes Allah Ya isa – God is more than everybody/ God is sufficient (This is used when two people are in dispute and one wants to concede without admitting fault. The rule of thumb is that the person who says this is not guilty because no one wants to call Allah to bear false witness)

Alhamdulillahi – means praise be to God but it is usually said by a person who sneezes (or at least that’s how I’ve heard it used)

Etc.
These words are spoken by Muslims and non-Muslims Hausa People

Sorry to derail your thread Hauwa but I couldn’t resist! It’s nice when people like KB1 show interest in things like this. grin

If you know christmas or a birthday is coming can't you save in advance to ge me a little something. how come you have so much money to send home and not enough to buy me a little gift twice a year.

he is so demanding of my time. I feel like i am being used.
What? Oh okay if that's the case, then it is time to get out. . . NOW!!!

Your thread should have been titled He is Demanding and I feel like I'm being Used, because this is worse than the gift issue. . . except of course, if  for you. . . not getting gifts takes precedence over him being demanding of your time and using you. lipsrsealed

Ok dude sounds like a retard, why would he confess that he buys gifts for others
You know him actully telling her he buy gifts for others kind of takes this to another level. Maybe he thinks what is between them is too deep for triteness. I mean what will he buy. . . Flowers? Chocolate? Perfume? Underwear? Jewelry?

It's easy to buy people you are not close to anything but with someone you love, it's hard to find just the right thing to express what you feel and you just figure the best medium to use is YOURSELF and in my opinion, I think this is what he is doing. Besides, I kind of think the core of the matter is that Mamasista isn't being given a chance to do forifori to her friends grin grin

The replies i am posting are in "her words". please see below.

This is not a business transaction. He already has his papers. I have seen them.
I was not asking in the context of him having his papers. The only kind of relationship I know where one party expects money in return is a Business relationship, that's why I asked.

All Jokes aside, Personally, I don't think it's a biggie. As long as he is there for her. . . you. . . her. . . whoever and he treats her right, does not abuse her verbally, emotionally and physically. . . it's all good. However, if you. . . she. . . both of you insist on getting gift, you can ask in a playful way, don't go at him like a janduku going to battle.

My friend asked me to post this for her because she does not have a computer. Here are her words below.

Please help me figure him out. i am dating him he is nigerian. He is very good to me, with one exception. He does not buy me gifts. No Birthday, No Valentines day, Nothing. I am reading here that Nigerian men are good providers and that doesnt seem to be the case with mine.

He is very good to me. He always calls and we spend alot of time together indoors. He speaks to me respectfully and compliments me all the time on my beauty and intelligence. Whenever i call him he answers right away, but he never offers to pay for anything that i need, even if he knows that i am stuggling. Instead he jusgt provides supportive words, and makes sure that I take care of it the best way I can. We both work, and I can take care of myself, but shouldnt he offer when times are a little tight for me?

He always sends large sums of money to his people back home each month, and i figure that is why he can't offer me anything. I tried to complain once, but all he says was that he will buy me something soon.

I have loaned him money before and he has repaid me. Christmas is coming. I usually buy him something. Should I buy him a gift this year?
Let's ignore the highlighted portion of your. . . errr. . . friend's posts for a moment and get to the problem at hand. I gotta ask, is this a Business Transaction or a Romantic Relationship?

By all accounts, your. . . . errr. . . friend's boyfriend is a very nice guy, he is respectful and supportive (which coming from a Niaja guy is  shocked. I kid, I Kid. . . Pipe down guys) but because he is not doling out the cash like Daddy Warbucks, You. . . err. . . I mean she is not happy?

Yep, she's got problems alright and it's got nothing to do with the guy.

Oh Merry Christmas https://images.zaazu.com/img/xmas-gift-merry-christmas-xmas-christmas-000363-large.gif

The truth is. . . There is a backlog of men at the factory, just not the men women want but don't worry, the manufactures are aware of the problem. After intensive research, they found out the reason why no one is taking these men off the shelf is because they are lack a very vital component. . . Sensitivity Chip.

Men sent out without these chips are being returned I droves. The manufactures put a halt on production when they realized how dire the situation is. Apparently, the women who got the men without the chips are refusing store credit!! They say they'd rather use other products or none at all. grin

Rotflmao!!! I can honestly say it gives me hope to see that some guys are appalled by the behavior described(even if it might be lipservice) but as God is my witness, it is the truth. The best excuse I can come up for their behavior is that they believe cleaning up, tidying up. . . anythingthat'sgot to do with dirt is a woman's job. I promise you, these guys did not move a muscle until it seemed like the women were about to get hurt, one of them even stopped to get another can of drink from the cooler we were logging to the car.

I volunteer with teens. . . a sorta after school programs and majority of the children in this program are Africans and of all the Africans parents, the Nigerians. . . specifically the fathers are the major headache givers.  There are kids who have been in the programs for 4 years and I can honestly say I don't know what their fathers look like. . . because they are not involved. Why? you ask. . . well, it simple - Rearing children is a woman's job. These women are over worked, tired and haggard looking yet they make there for events, for pick up and drop off. As long as the father goes to work and doles out money when it is needed, his job is done.

Some men live by the following "cultural" codes

Men are providers of money and that's it.
Men do not go into the kitchen
Men do not touch a vacuum cleaner
Men do not touch a diswasher or washing machine
Men do not take of the children.
Men aren't accountable to anyone but everyone is accountable to men.
Men get whatever they want, when they want and if they don't. . . they have justifiable reason to go seek it outside.

Now my thing is, there are only 24hrs in a day. . . when will the woman get a chance to give the guy what he wants, when he wants it, if she has to do all the things he mustn't do or his manhood will be dealt a lethel blow? I'm sorry to say this but aren't we setting women up to fail?  huh

LoveAlways:
Nah, I don't think that I have any serious issues.  I am just realistic, I do not think that marriage is for me (or really important).  The issues that I have with marriage centers around my observation of other married couples.  I have two aunts who are happily married, other than that, I do not know of anyone else.  Most of the people I know are divorced or have never been married.  I also know of people who are unhappily married, yet pretend to be happy for the sake of ego.

Maybe one of the issues I will admit to, is that I sometimes view marriage as a dungeon for wives.  A union where women become domestic slaves and subservants to men in order to keep their husbands happy and to also feel validated; eg.  I'm married to a man! Therefore I must be a special lady  -- he picked me, he picked me!!  I'm just not turned on by the idea.  I'm special, simply because I am.  I think that men sometimes, use marriage as wager to get more of what they want from women; sex, food and kids to carry on their name stakeSo to some women, marriage is a huge boost to the ego -- "HE wants my sex?  HE wants my food?  HE wants me to carry HIS child."  I observe women losing themselves in the process of keeping men happy in mediocre marriages.

If you are having serious doubts like that, then maybe marriage really isn't for you. Also it seems like you have some issues besides just the general idea of marriage that you need to deal with. You probably should maybe see a professional listener to try and figure out what is causing your fears and if you can work it out.
