A debt is an instrument. Countries have national and internal debt profiles. Even your country is owning tonnes, it could even be argued that everyone is/has been/will be a debtor, at someplace or some instance in life. "Do you service your debt?" is one among questions... Are you going to strike your country off your list too, lols... Only to end up with another country with debts too... Of course, it's what they do with the debts and how it is serviced that matters.

Even Dangote that you may want to be friends with uses it. The rich and wealthy also borrow, how many will you strike off your list because of their private businesses... Do you even have the strength, money and resources to privately investigate someone's business project that may or may not affect dealings with you?
It's alright. I don't want to be in the contact list of those that lend money from online apps.

Don't mind Nigerians who have access to the Internet. If I'm in Lagos, I would always patronize shops like Slot even though it's 50k more expensive because they would definitely sell you something new.

Tunchi101:
so yesterday, I had to visit a police station for d first time in my life as a result of my 1st computer village scam. did those guys scam me mehnn (and to think it was a popular store)… me wey think say I street

My experience with the Police officers…?

never have I felt more helpless in my entire life than when I was in that police station

if it was when popsy was still alive and I was still in the cantoment, na just soldiers I for resolve my issue

When I reported the issue to the police officers I met at the counter(2 females), the first thing they said was that before they can answer me at all, I would have to sort them with 30thousand naira that they are very busy people

in that very moment, I knew I already almost lost the case cause it would eventually become a game of numbers i.e d person who could sort the most

I knew I was not going to compete with one big Igbo man who owns abt 4 stores in computer village

for a moment though, I almost considered giving them the 30k because of the amount involved but then Sapa had me violently by the neck…

so about the scam…

earlier this month, I decided to switch from an android to an iOS device(Xs Max). Went to slot but they did not have the exact model I wanted. A friend of mine had just gotten an iOS device so I asked him where he got it and he referred me to BIGTECHDEVICES on Instagram. He also stated they deliver at home which was a plus for me.

I ordered and it got delivered to me

my brother uses an identical device and he’s also a phone engineer.

The next day after the purchase, I noticed something on the screen and showed it to by brother, he immediately said the phone was not a new one(now there was no way for him to vex the product before purchase because I bought it online). Tahh I rebuked him in Jesus name immediately. Phone dat I cut nylon myself

I continued flexing my phone like that

a week after using d phone, d battery health dropped from 100% to 93% and usually this should take up to a year before dropping to 93%. I still choose self denial over reasoning cause no way I spent that money and cut nylon myself only for me to get a substandard product.

What I discovered yesterday was the straw that broke the camels back and had me marching to computer village (I was going to take my junior brother along but he wasn’t around) after looking for their address online. I realized the phone was coupled in Nigeria.

I learnt a few things yesterday

not only is the police force grossly incompetent, they are wildly corrupt and lack human empathy.

Just because a celebrity is following a brand/store does not make them legit (donjazzy follows them so it gave them some form of credibility) - I am not by this faulting celebrities directly for promoting brands

If you’d have to order electronics online, make sure this from a very well know and credible store

The police is not your friend

Avoid trouble as best as you can

after so much deliberation, the officers accepted 10k. Escorted me to d store where I ordered d phone and picked up one of the sales boy. d boy explained 2 dem at d station that as he has already told me before, I’d have to drop d phone and come back after 2 weeks. This was unacceptable for me and for a moment it was for the officers too

they told the boy 2 invite his Oga, he said d oga was not around. Then they asked him to write a statement, he then immediately said the Oga was back.

The instance the oga walked into the station, it was as if the police officers we switched right b4 my eyes. They were licking his ass

Right in my front, they were also asking him to sort cause they can see he is such a nice man. (Game of numbers)

for the small remaining part of this story…

guys dem get me proper mehnn like scam me proper left and mehnn but I no go too talk am make una no laugh me

after the Oga sorted them, the police officers asked me to follow him back to his shop that he would sort my issue. I objected, insisted the man told us in the station what he was going to do when we get to his shop. The police officers said I should not worry at all, I should just follow him back that he seems like a nice person

He then told one of the female officers to escort us back to his shop to collect more cash. We got to his shop, he sorted her and she left the 2 of us immediately after arriving.

it was just me and the Goliath looking man in his office with his staff at the front side of the office. He tried apologizing in his own weird way stating that he won’t be able to refund my money but would get me a replacement. While I was seated waiting for d replacement, 2 different customers(1which seemed like a very impatient Lagos tout) came with very similar complaints of which he refunded their cash righ in my front.

For my replacement phone he said he did not have it in stock anymore and called one of his fellow traders to sell for him.

my replacement phone arrived packed and sealed just like the first one. He broke the seal, apologized one more time. He even showed me the transfer he made from his friend he got the phone from complaining he was actually running at a lost bcs he is having to buy if more than the cost I originally purchased it

Checked all I needed to check to ensure I don’t get scammed again. Everything was in place.

Left computer village feeling a little bit compensated and like a bad guy

Omoor only for me to get home and for my brother to confirm this morning that the new phone I was given again was actually a used phone too…

Omoor I just weak. Let me drop my pen here as I am still in perpetual confusion

I doubt he got the detail from the bank, if he did, he would know at least one bank I use rather than trying to get that info from me.
This is the fact. There are third party applications when you enroll BVN or request for an Atm card. This applications are porous and vulnerable and fraudsters hack and get this database of newly enrolled BVN or cards. When the fraudsters call, they almost always don't know your bank but can tell from BVN, the bank you enrolled with. Ask them for your account number, they don't have it. Your card number or secret details they don't have, clearly indicating they are not bank staff as bank staff may be able to access some of this info. They ask you your balance etc. Definitely not bank staff who may be able to check this on system.

chatinent:
I am wondering how you got a Quickteller OTP if all you gave him were fake.

Ok ok, let's assume he processed it using your BVN.

Very easy.
It could be gotten via a phished site...or some bank officials sold it out. A liaison with a fraudulent banker can empty your accounts. Many fraudsters work with bankers. Lol. Even loan apps sell BVNs. In fact, any agency requiring your BVN sells it. I cross my heart. Lol.

I know of about three other ways to get a BVN without even going to the bank. Lol. So it is not new. Not new. So now imagine if it is in a wrong hands.

A lot of people who even have the BVN don't know how to use it hence they need your credit card details. Lol. Poor thing.

Let me simplify this for you.

If you use online payments regularly, only entering your first four letters could tell if it's Visa, Mastercard, etc...

Using USSD too could unveil a bank name, and holder's name. (I am sure you know that).

On Bank Apps too, it is easy.

There is an app too that does that. It is in dark web and we shouldn't talk about it.

You have to be careful sha.

But that's an old format.

New pro fraudsters tweak your Quick Teller or Transfer accounts that it sends you a mail. When you log in, an OTP is sent to you almost immediately while you are in the app that you wouldn't even suspect it is from another user since you are also responding to the mails with the bank name..the OTP may come in SMS or notification bearing the name too (using bought SMS units)...and boom...your account balance is gone forever. But believe me, you can never track anyone who knows this method. It takes more than mere hacking. This is an expert touch...they'll end up shifting the log details to some other innocent soul..who will definitely be tracked. Many are languishing in prisons for this. Don't worry about this. In a hundred million, only one person fit sabi do this.

Some pro hackers who work with fraudsters also do hack into your balance directly, and shift logs to another vulnerable person! But it is rare to find these sorts! Why? Poor fraudsters cannot afford them. Lol...and that's what most fraudsters are finding. They want to remove the aza-man intermediary thing. Lol.

How do I know all these?

I was a darkweb geek during the days of Wapka.

Moving forward...

• you may need to use a two-way authentication on your accounts! It is very important. Both on your social media and Google accounts.

• Always view the links you click. I see many shared messages on WhatsApp ending with YouthEmpowerment using a URL Shortener urging people to share to their friends for a prize. Lol. Big scam.

• whenever a link claiming to represent sth sends a message, search on Google. It should have a Wikipedia page, go there and view their website link. If it is not the same, it is fraud.

• in Nigeria, only recognised education websites use the .edu.ng and government sites use the .gov.ng . If a site claiming to be of the government says otherwise, it's scam.

if you ever get confused about a message being scam or not, just post it here on Nairaland and tag me, I will answer.

• be careful of apps you download away from Google Play or Appstore, some can steal your details. Download only recognised official apps on those stores. Not all apps are genuine there tho. Always read reviews (read the critical reviews.. because their team members must always join in posting positive reviews).

• When an unknown number calls you, end the call and run it on TrueCaller. TrueCaller will help you too. His name may shock you.

You are welcome.
You are right, but over 50% of Nigerians are gullible. That's why a fraudster calls them with the above format, send Otp and the customer who have been told by bank staff that he would be called; likely goes ahead to read out this secret number to unknown person on the phone.

My brother, I was out of job for like 6 months and wife took care of all the bills excluding rent and school fees and nobody noticed or knew I was out of job. No negative attitude showed up and I will tell you why. A close friend gave me this advice and I will share same with you. When you get your salary or business profit, remove your t-fare/car fuel and give the rest to your wife to manage the home. I was very hard for me to do but t I summoned courage and since 3+ years I started it, I have complete peace. Infact, my wife was praising me on how I was able to pay all bills and manage funds. By the time your wife will mismange the home funds (feeding, rent, kids sch fees e.t.c) she will wake up and realize that paying for gas in the home is the least issue. You will have utmost respect bro. I have been married for 7 years now.
It's still annoying to me to realize that the expense in question is likely below 10k a month. Gas getting more expensive everyday is the least issue as we all know everything is rising daily.

I think this issue is lack of communication

Communicate your feelings and expectations to her
Communicating is critical, very important. But that's who the woman is. It would take a more matured woman who the lady may see as a friend and complain to, to correct this silly behavior from her. The husband may try it. But the result can't be predicted with accuracy.

Lol, jobless married men should be useful in the house by doing the chores, cooking, and taking care of the kids, believe me, no woman will insult or demean a man like that, instead, she will make it her life's goal to get him back on his feet again. A man cannot be useless at home and useless in providing leaving everything for the breadwinner to do, then expect respect and cuddling, mbanu, it doesnt work like that, you guys should stop the whining, make yourself useful at home.

As for what your wife did abi is doing, carry your cross like that, rebuke her, or ignore her, you knew who she was before you married her.
You aren't different from the man's wife. Your words say it clearly. You could even be worse. A man cannot be useless at home and useless in providing. If a man uses same words on his housewive for not doing home chores, would you be okay with that. That's gross disrespect.

Me I don't see any problem in this o.

Na only one bill she dey pay, yet she wan turn terrorists for your head. You sef, always remind her how expensive DSTV and foodstuff costs as often as you can.

You can add the rising cost of rent too.

Treat people how they treat you and watch them adjust.

Just cause your own wife is like that doesn't mean all women are that way.

I know women who are bread winners and you'd never know, even n their house.

One just bought car and house that her family just moved into. Na her husband dey drive the car.

So don't conclude all women who are bread winners are like that.
I concur that some few women are not like that. They are really nice to a fault. But do they grumble unuttered-without words to themselves. This is where the challenge may come from as we men don't complain on things getting more expensive. We only realize it's time to work harder to afford the rising cost and stay afloat or still save. It's important that a woman not count what she's doing to build her home for God blessing her as the men don't complain of spending a lot to keep the family happy even to themselves.

This scenario reminds me of Jude and Eniola Badmus that was always cartoonized on The Sun Newspaper.

That means if she were the one providing the meals, ọ ga -esiri gị ike ga ahu banana nke a rapuru fo.

Mehn..

Nothing dey vex me pass references to every little efforts you make forgetting my daily stabs to make you happy.

Most women cannot be men even for a day.

Only one evening my cousin sister took me out, I never even remove my shoe naim I read her status: “I like the woman I am becoming. Always learn to man your womanhood.”

The only thing most women tend to appreciate is credit alerts..or send your account number. They will become so emotional..they can even cry.

Let the case be the reverse.

Make she just take care of you for two days.

You go hear weeen. She go even remind you how she carry you for stomach for nine months.

“Richie, what is this na, can't I have peace after coming back from work again? How can you eat and cannot wash your plates again! What's this na!”

“Baby, why are you shouting? The neighbours are at...”

“Don't baby me. What have I not done to make you happy? Will I kill myself? Am I the only married woman in the world..what is this na.”

(You try to hold her hands to calm her down...she slaps you damn hard).

“(She is crying now..tears flowly freely). Just see what you made me do. Just see it. Everything is just wrong with this world.”

You mah wey dem slap go still go meet am for parlour where she dey cry dey pet am (and that is after checking your cheeks if blood dey comot). You go come humbly tell am say no bi you eat, say na the one she eat for morning..but anyways, you forgot to wash it.

Another matter don dey brew.

She will now come to the parlour and sit, ask you for the remote and change the football to Telemundo and mutter these words you'll never hear: “work e won't work, such a failure. It's only remote e can pass.”

You will try to look at her with your side eyes but meet her full eyes staring at you in disgust. Mumu you go come smile enter bedroom.

As you are walking into the bedroom, the volume of the muttering is increasing but it's still inaudible.

In the oza room, just respect yourself. Don't even dare..unless you want the whole world to know how you will be idle and want to kill sb’s daughter after working all day!

“oh, it's your plan, Richie, baa? To kill me so that you can now go and meet Ishilove, baa?”

Only you go dey like Stone Cold Steve Austin sleep.

It will be normal...the “honey, darling etc.” is going to die. You will be called your name...two seconds, she will stop calling your name and just be giving out orders.

Abeg, don't even remind her you are the husband. You will get the insult of your life. She will say “no, say it loud na, let mama Chisom hear you. How many husbands stay at home watching football and their wives are left to do all the work!”

But na you still dey pay rent, buy foodstuff, and children fees.

Baba, kuku collect that responsiblity back. I hate to talk much. No dare shift any of your responsibility to woman...even if she persists to want to help. E kuku better she dey do am willingly than you register her name on it.

Only women, babies, and pets are loved. Men are respected when they man up. Na the respect we dey translate to love.

Hello Nairalanders. I got married late last year.
Even though I got married late, I made sure I was gainfully employed before taking the giant stride.

I love my wife and she loves me too. I carry 98 % of the home responsibility, recently, because things are on the high side and my wife is working as well, I told her to be taking care of filling the gas while I handle other bills.
I have observed that anytime I go near the gas maybe to make food or boil water, she will remind how expensive gas is right now, after all, if it finishes, I won't give money to fill. These words hurt me alot as this is the only thing you do for us in this house. I know how much I pay for rent, DSTV etc with other utility bills.

My thoughts now are;
How do men which their wives are feeding them cope with insults and embarrassments that come with every meal?

How do unemployed/underemployed men cope?

What if anything happens with my job, will I be able to stay in a verbal abusive home?
Please start refilling the gas with your money to remove this insult. You can cut down on other expenses.

If you just walk up to them and say you are married. Do you think they will believe you? Especially here in Africa. Like it's that easy? No now.

As long as they are not aware, you still remain unmarried to them and if anything happens, such a couple will be treated as mere boyfriend and girlfriend. Even me, that's how I'll regard such.

Sequel to OP's story. I had a funny experience in the same UNIBEN, tragi-comedy some will say.

I remember vividly back in UNIBEN, I was in 100 level at the time. I had lecture at BASEMENT ( POL 111 — a collective course at the time), Due to no cash at the Access bank and Stanbic bank ATM around faculty car park, I had to trek under the hot sun enroute June12 (ATMs at June 12 weren't installed then) - hall 2 - back of library extension until I arrived at the UBA ATM just opposite the main library building.

I was exhausted and hungry because I began my trekking from Ekosodin where I lived at the time, On my unfortunately arrival, i met a long queue at the UBA ATM and keep in mind, Bread and beans at booker was the only thing on my mind so I needed the money badly.

Picture me as number 15 just joining the queue — I didn't mind as I found solace in the bread and beans that money was going to after withdrawal.

E be like say na pidgin go make sense to use now.

So as the queue dey move slowly and hungry dey wire me, e just be like say make I break the atm commot the money go chop as network just slow finish, one person fit use 5 minutes take withdraw 1k due to slow network.

As e be say, e wan reach my turn as the second person to withdrawal after this guy wey dey my front, one fine babe just show, the girl fine finish, no be lie and come fresh, Na so the mumu guy whey dey in front of me come activate him simp button come dey yearn say, na him and the babe come and the babe dey him back, which I know say na lie, he just wan chance me base on say, him na strong man (confra) and me na100 level student whey no get level.

Na so de rest people for queue come dey protest, the guy insist say, the babe go withdraw base on say, they come together, which na lie he dey lie. The babe just dey smile.

Na so my guy use like 5 minutes withdraw him money, the fine babe come take my second place to wan withdraw, as she slot in her card. ATM swallow am come off join.

Na so everyone for the queue just dey laugh as the guy dey form "elect-elect" electrician for ATM machine wey don off. Everybody clear but na with laugher we use clear comot.

Hunger wire me till I leg am reach main gate go withdraw but anytime I remember that day, I still dey laugh cus na my card that ATM suppose swallow.
Sometimes in life, there's a reason for everything. God may be protecting you and you are like things are slow. Allow God to handle things for you at his own time. The young girl just saved you stress at the time. Thank God you allowed her to take your turn.

Even the banks and their bankers secretly invest in cryptocurrencies..damn

It is a CBN directive.
Banks face the music if they don't.
I rather think it is a good idea.
