Every car has the manufacturer approval suitability to use their oil. You get this Api Sn and then when you read the approvals, you will see Bmw LL01 and MB 229.1 or 3. So many inconsistencies. Modern oiks needs BMW approval for Long life 04. Some just write it on their sticker like Forte sunth. Theirs is LL01 and there are so many oils like that that knows that we dont read. There is this wonderful oil called G Life that has all the numbers but they wrote at the back of their gallon that their oil is suitable for compact cars. Even with that infomation, I see people using the oil on Lexus V8 all because it is a 5w20.

I have not used any. When you look at the gallon of MRS, you will be afraid of the content in that gallon. I was once a fan of texaco ATF because as at 2008, it was the only Dexron 111 in Nigeria that you can get openly. Then you now see the atf sold by MRS, then you will run away from their outlets. I have been hearing of Liqui Moly but the guy marketing it does not know what he is marketing. I was at Olowu market in Ikeja and I say ADLER 5w20 and they will put some cars approval on it. Mercedes was 229.1 while the current is 229.5. That was how Forte added GM diesel as approved to use their SYNTH 10000. I asked the Manager why should the oil be suitable for Diesel cars and not gasoline cars? Have you seen GM brands that are diesel powered to the point that an oil will be suitable for it. Maybe it is suitable for Opel diesel cars.

We are not recommending 20W 50. 50 grade oil might be too thick. Like I said 20W, 5W 10W are all the same in our climate... Then follow your manufacturers recommended grade for the second digits.... using the recommended API. I don't trust oando though. What did you do to get your range back to shape? This thread is to learn I believe.

The Range Sport is dead, so also with over 10 owners that followed my advice on using the Oando synthetic because of my experience with the drums. We wanted to sue them as a class action because their quality assurance was not up to date. They were at my office on two occasions looking for oil samples. Their oil was drying up every week and you had to be topping regularly even when I dont get to 100kms in one week. There was another time when a Sport was being towed into the workshop and a Representative of Eterna Oil was in the workshop. That Range knocked its engine from using Castrol edge 5w40. All these oil guys do is to pretend that maybe you bought adulterated oil and not their original oils. Imagine that Oando was boasting that Dexron 11 is their fastest selling atf. Dexron 11D cannot even work on Toyota tiny light or Honda baby boy but in 2016, it was their fastest selling fluid. Total has Dexron 6 in France but we are still using dexron 11d in 2018. Mobil has the famous 3309 ATF but we have Dexron 11e here. It is a policy to destroy our cars and then allow more to be shipped into the country. Toyota from 2010 says 0w20. There is even no donut sign because the 0w20 is unique. Go to the Auto fair starting tomorrow and you will see the oils that will be displayed. They claimed the 20w50 is the best selling oil in Nigeria but you will be shocked at the API specification. Even Sahara group produces sae 40 and API Sl 20w50 too

From the chart, Standards Organisation of Nigeria allows the production of oil with the classification of API SD. SAE 40 is API SE sold locally by all oil marketers. API SF and SG is still being sold by Mobil, Forte Oil and Seahorse. There is one thing you guys should understand. Before Oando started selling their synthetic oils in gallons, I was one of the few to have bought the oil in drums. Not one drum, but 5 drums. I used all to service my customers cars in Benin, Abuja and Lagos. That oil was API SN 5w40. No noise, no shortage, but pure performance. Before then, I used Oando SM 20w50 in 2013 on my range Rover Sport. The oil was too thick for the car, that from Lagos to Abuja, it took me one week to get there. I lost my catalyst, the plugs were all soaked the nozzles were blocked, the radiator was vibrating and I lost the transmission fluid and in Lokoja, the fan belt gave way. That was when Oando staff now brought to my notice, that they have synthetic oil and after my verdict, they launched the oil in gallon but I recall that it was withdrawn from the market on many occasions before they finally stabilized with the production of the oil. Our dispute led them to take samples of the oil to SGS Paris for analysis and they now forwarded the report to me. So the problem right now is not the 20w50 but the quality. Going through Total oil website, I discovered that the oils being sold in France does not exist here in Nigeria. Peugeot has never recommended 20w50 for their cars of the 2000s. Peugeot 508 cannot use Q9000 and therefore the owners are at a crossroad. It was someone that now clarified that Motorists should use Mobil 1 5w30 ESP for the current models of peugeot but on the car, the sticker is still recommending Total activa and this is a car that is assembled in Nigeria. If 20w50 is ideal for our modern cars, Kaduna PAN would not recommend 5w30. Someone used Cepsa 20w50 API SN on his range rover and his car started misbehaving and soaking plugs. Can you buy a 17m car and use a 4k oil? That is the problem I am facing with some companies who bring their Toyotas for service to us. Why will your price be higher that Elizade? They forgot the reason why they brought the car to us, the engine vibrates and consume a lot of fuel and there is sludge. Toyota Hiace requires 5w30 but people use 20w50 and they dont understand what is going on. It is an awareness thread and not a manufacturer's thread. Even the manual is not followed, is it this thread that you will listen to? I am a practitioner till date and so I talk from experience. We just ordered 12 gallons of Castrol Extended Performance for my Range Rover Club Members because the situation on ground is threatening the well being of the brand.

Toyota has always included the 20W-50 oil grade in its manual. That being said... The API Ilsac acea characteristics are of more importance than the first number on the multiverse oils. It is irrelevant to use 0W, 5W, here.... Given the temperature specs which never falls below 22°c most of the time in subsaharan Africa we might as well use the 15W, 20W, or 25W specs. While the second digits.... We are okay with 30, 40, and sometimes 50 grade oils. Now what I expect that you should be concerned about is the API ACEA and ILSAC characteristics of the oils on the Nigerian market. This where the evils are being implemented on the poor Nigerian consumers!

When you see api sl being used on a toyota and you see api sh being sold in the country, even api sf sold as 20w50 and a lot of people are using it on cars that require api sn, what will you do? Have you seen any Api sn sold locally? The highest is Sm in 20w50 and that is Oando and MRS. What is the oil used in Dubai? Api sf or sg? Are they not even hotter than Nigeria?

Continue using the mineral oil. I dont know why you are pained. If Toyota recommends 20w50 for hot weather, go ahead and use it but if you look at the chart again, you will understand. When you talk of the first charts you posted earlier, you will find out that you dont even understand what you posted. On that chart, sae 40 was recommended, 5w20 was for colder climates only and you said that it was recent? The second charts you posted now shows that 5w20 is now an all weather oil. Everyone talk about our hot weather and thereforr are using mineral oil. The donut sign on the oil cap, does it apply to 20w50? The gasoline engines, the energy.conserving and the api sn? You guys are the reason why Nigerian used cars are scraps because of the poor maintenance culture. Anyone buying a naija used car always go through pains restoring the car back to normal.

Maybe you are trying to console yourself that you are using 20w50. I am not begging you to buy oil from me. Why does the US spec put 0w20 on their oil cover, gasoline engines, energy conserving and the SA spec does not put it there? You are looking at the chart from the top instead of the bottom. 0w20, 5w20 and 5w30 all covers minus to plus degrees and if you feel that you know better than the manufacturer, good luck to you. How many brand new Toyotas bought locally in 2012 that are still good looking, engine wise? You will see a 2006 Toyota imported from the US and it will look brand new than the brand new bought here.

I am surprised at a lot of information on this thread. The relevant issues here should be the API classification. In fact the first digits of the multigrade oils are absolutely irrelevant to our climate.
We should fight the evil oil Dealers still selling API SA, SB, SC, SD, SE, SF SG, and SH in Nigeria

SB 1951
SC 1967
SD 1971
SE 1979
SF 1988
SG 1993
SH 1996
UNLESS YOUR CARS CORRESPOND WITH THE STATED YEARS.

Good to know that you know much about oil. API SD is the minimum oil benchmark that SON allows to be produced locally or even import. Oando, Mobil, Forte, Total and others are still producing these oils in 20w50 classifications and many happy buyers are buying. Imagine SON allowing oils made for 1971 engines to be used in 2018.
As for your Benz, when you try that diesel oil, please bring the car to us to help you demolish it. That car has 12 plugs and as we speak, the sludge inside the engine can block pen cinema drainage. First flush the engine and look for Mobil 1 USA. There is nowhere you can find API SJ, so I will advise that you settle for the API SN. They are backward compatible. Everyone has moved forward, it is only in Nigeria that oil marketers are producing oil for their grandfathers cars of yore.

I can respond well now. The previous oil chart you posted, showed that the chart was for older cars wey back the 90s while the current chart is for modern cars. If api sf was valid at the time of the old chart, then it is very obvious that it was old. From the new chart, you can see the oil sequence. 0w20, 5w20 and 5w30 are suitable for all weather. All weather and then the last on the list is the 20w50 in case you happen to find yourself in the desert. From the same chart, you can see that the fuel recommended is premium unleaded fuel for toyota cars, the type recommended for bmw and audi and acura etc. Now we have a problem. If you use the 20w50 oil and you use regular fuel, on a car that the manufacturer has recommended otherwise, what will be the outcome? The two issues that torment our vehicles in this country is oil and fuel and it is a sad reminder that we are enjoying this ignorance.

The chart for 2012 avensis without the 0w20? That is good to know that as at 2012, we had toyota cars that were using 5w20 as the recommended oils

@sooperrescue I was thinking since our fuel octane rating here in Nigeria isn't really good for these Range Rivers without the use of octane boosters, isn't it advisable to do a MCG or LPG conversion kit on the Range Rover vehicles?

It wont work. I had been observing the taxis whenever I am in Benin because almost all painted taxis run on lpg there. For the most recent Audi 80 with fuel injectors, it was not successful as they claim that it jerks all the time. But nearly all cars run on premium fuel nowadays including Toyota cars. The bottom line is to use the right oil and get octane boosters

Just follow what’s written in your car manual, if you don’t have any, simply Google “Car Make, Model and Year - Car Manual” e.g. “Toyota Camry 2013 Car Manual” and used what your car manufacturer specify as Engine Oil Grade. It is that simple.

Also, if your car manufacturer says use 0w-20 and you think 20w-50 is the best Engine Oil for your car, that’s also a good and wise decision, since it’s your car, your money and your decision.

You have summarised the whole matter. Thank you very much. I have no interest in any particular oil. If the motorists like, let them use groundnut oil but in the end, someone else will buy the crap and go through pains trying to fix what the previous owner has destroyed. That is the reason for this thread. You cannot buy a car for 1m and then use 4k oil, then good luck. If the manufacturer tells you to use a particular oil and your mechanic tells you to use another for our hot weather, goodluck. In all their manuals, they always recommend an oil grade for all weather.

You are correct but if your phone has a 4g network and you decide to use 2g, what will you get? That is the same with oils. All toyotas, kia, and hondas sold brand new in the country does not carry the oil specification sign on the cap. That is the begining of deceit. Meanwhile, there are too many info on the US spec oil cover telling first that it must be gasoline engines only, must be 5w30, the Api specification is listed there and then you get energy conserving. So the oil must not be diesel and gasoline like mobil 1 from Egypt, must be the api specified and the oil it has been tested to use.

I fit? It is Nigeria's famous oil used by ignorant folks and made popular by stingy motorists. I have never seen any car that wrote 20w50 oil on the oil cap. It is only the cars sold by local dealerships that sells cars with no information on the cover cap except see owners manual. And there is no local oil company that is even producing 20w50 Api SN. Api SN was introduced in 2010 and 8yrs down the line, no SN. The whole blame goes to SON and the Nigerian motorists that accepts such oils.

In my years as a lube bay operator with Total, cars that uses the mineral oils are given a 3000 miles or 3months sticker and because the oil is not meant for these cars, they are at risk of sludge because the oil cannot protect the engine any further. On some oils, it turns to gel within two months and you lose protection. In this case, the oil is supposed to be changed on the 4th of May. Please use the correct oil for your car. You dont know the damages these oils cause to vehicles.

I used to fix Honda cars in Abuja and even though we were using TOTAL Q9000 on them then, there was really no issue with that car. When you guys say, engine is expensive, how much were you expecting it to be sold? Gazzuzz, if you can say that about the evil spirit, then we get problem o because by now, you should have found a solution to these problems. Those complaints from the US are from those that use the dealership. We all know how Honda used to tell us that they dont have the software for US spec cars until guys like you folks started giving them a run for their lies and you will now see Honda Place fixing Acura. In America, they dont have guys like luvinhubby, gazzuzz etc that have excelled against all odds and yet this dem say talk is upsetting.

It depends on the source. On my whatapps forum, someone has volunteered to sell at N25k for the Castrol edge 5w30 and 5w20 extended performance and many have shown interest and we are all buying 4 gallons each to last a year. But a source in Lekki sells for 30-35k because, according to him, the duty for the oil is very high when containerised. Using extended performance will protect the engine not to the 15k miles range but at least the 6000 miles will be in order.

As at 2005, and till date, they were the importers of Abro ATF type A into the country. They denied that they use such oils in their workshops and we went to their warehouse down their lane where we saw the abro but I was thinking that they will show me the one that they are using on their current cars but they never did. I was even taken to their workshop and I was awed because everywhere was clean unlike mine and many others fixing the brand.They complained of sludge in the BMW 7 series but none on the 5 and 3 series using Mobil 1. How well have these cars fared on our roads and where are they now is another story. Is there anyone that bought his Range Rover from Coscharis since 2005 and the car is still on the road? Tell us your experience. Lets hear from you in order for our forum members to learn more and make informed choices of either buying a new Range Rover from Coscharis or buying used from the US. The market source of the Range Rovers from Coscharis is unknown, their parts especially the amplifier, you can never get it from the internet either on Ebay, Carid, Amazon or even British Atlantic. They are the only one that can source for the parts for you. But they sell Abro batteries in their garages of which I am yet to determine if their batteries have expired or not. Someone once told me that all the Castrol that he imported has been cleared by Coscharis and they were all magnatec and the white GTX, no extended performance of the Castrol.

Thanks for the offer but please make it the extended performance of Castrol like I told you in another thread. The engine is too expensive to be toyed with low quality oils. The extended performance will do good. There are many owners of BMW and VW and AUDI that will gladly buy from you. Even the new breed Toyotas will also gladly buy from you.

The difference is the market it is destined for. Mobil 1 0w40 from Egypt is destined for North Africa while the 0w40 from the US is for cars made for the American market. I once ordered for an ECU of a 2007 Audi A6 from Germany and we were told that we should order from the US as that car was a US spec and the European Ecu will not work. I believe that the oil issue is also the same. Mobil 1 from Egypt is not destined for the same market as the one from the US
