They are 2 different positions in central defence....5 & 6.
One is the first to tackle/mark/intercept (Vidic, Carvalho, Kompany), the other cover up, organize the back 4, and also the brain of the defence, good with the ball, can join attack( Ferdinand, Terry, Van dirk).

You can't just say one is better than the other....

The vidic/Carvalho/Kompany will struggle against skillful attackers but overcome strong attackers...

Ferdinard/Terry will struggle against physical attackers but overcome skillful attackers.

Can't believe I am agreeing with you but you nailed it.In modern defending the centrebacks act as a partnership, one attacks the ball, the other tracks the runner. Both Centre backs dont do the same job. Most people will always believe the more aggressive partner is better than the calm ones who read the game better that's why it always comes down to preference and style of play we like.
