Get rid of that LINK typedef. Use less of macros/typedefs in the future cause they actually confuse people sometimes, it's stressful going back to check a macro/typedef every single time. You used string as a typedef then used it as a variable in a function. Stop using recursion it is bloodily slow and eats space on the stack (a space for function variables and instruction pointer values for switching between functions) and is prone to segmentation faults, use loops especially for the count function.

But recursion somewhat remains the elegant way to traverse a linked list.

To be sincere there is not a good definition for me. Many kind of people has been shaping my definition as I pass through life. For the moment I am now I think a beautiful lady is some with really nice face, a little chubby body, smooth shining skin and a sweet smile. when I say smile I mean smile. Such a terrible advise. Sorry I sound annoying but your advice is a bit dangerous. C is more much close to machine than any other 3rd generation language and the like of C++ and Java are much more closer to us as humans. C is a pain the neck when you need it to do things you are not vast in. while in C++ and Java chances are that there is already an abstracted framework or a class you can simply plugin and use. For c, both the library and syntax are fearful to beginners especially when we start talking about malloc and some crude method that handles data a their primitive and raw form.
