story 1: i had an uncle who always complained about his job. he worked in an oil company. he told me to pursue my dreams (i used to be a music producer in the university) and how life is not all about making money he complained he didn't have time for his family and how we wishes he could spend time with his children he complained about how he's underpaid compared to expatriates he complained so much, we (the family) actually had pity on him long story short, we had an insider in the company (from our church) who told us, my uncle was the person blocking my elder brother from getting a job in same company he (the insider) was shocked we were related to him (my uncle) he called our uncle in my fathers presence, who told him: do you want that small boy to overtake me in the family my uncle didn't know the phone was on speaker!!! this was 2008.
its easy for a beautiful girl with so many rich suitors to tell her 'not so fine' friends with only one suitor life is not about marriage its easy for a rich person to tell a broke person life is not about money its easy for someone in canada/US/europe to tell you in Nigeria the grass isn't greener abroad
someone who doesn't buy fuel for gen, someone who doesn't sleep with multiple lecturers for marks in the university someone who isn't slapped, abused and insulted in the hospital (like it happens in teaching hospitals in Nigeria) SHOULD NOT TELL NIGERIANS ANYTHING ABOUT RELOCATING ABROAD The number of new Nigerian immigrants complaining about hardship and difficulties has increased exponentially, One of the reasons is that Western economies are encountering severe economic hardship and new immigrants are finding it difficult to sustain affordable housing and income when working in professions such as care workers, nurses and junior doctors. |

grandstar: The country lacks the captive market to manufacture new cars competitively.
Pat Utomi who served as the MD of Volks if I'm correct in the 1980s said these companies were dying back then to leave the country.
He also said it's best Nigeria is proficient in producing a few car parts competitively and be a reckoning force in it. It could be brake pads, Rollerblade, tyres and so on. Imagine if Nigeria manufactured 10% of the brake pads used in Europe or 50% of the leather in German cars?
A frew market in cars is best. The second hand car industy is providing jobs and livelihoods for probably over a million people. Why not reduce import duty on Tokunbo cars further to boost employment and economic activity?

ecolime: Nigeria government is too corrupt and incompetent to manage any enterprise successfully.
Even if you have a corrupt free leader who has the mind of the people, the evil government workers will never let the refineries function well.
The mistake we made was not selling the refineries off. I agree with Atiku's stand on this.
He muted the idea of selling them first although people like me crucified him then If the government is too corrupt to function, then fix the government. The solution is not to sell government assets to private individuals operating within a corrupt government environment but to reform the systems like the Malaysian and Singaporean did in the 1970s. Why didn't OBJ persecute the corruption within NNPC? Or was he afraid of Danjuma and IBB, two key stakeholders in the corruption within the oil industry? The private sector cannot survive in a corrupt government unless it becomes corrupt. |

Everyone has seen how they handle the free money from FIFA meant for teams Do they have to hand over the funds to NFF? Why not put the team in the hands of independent operators and fund them? There are numerous management consultancies that can ensure players and coaches get their salaries. I recall Dangote paying Berti Vogt directly when he coached the SE. The NFF is corrupt and incapable of functioning as an entity. Any organisation that employs a failure like Eguaveon has nothing to offer Nigeria football. |

In fairness to Coach Austin Eguavoen, he is such a patriotic Nigerian who is always ready and willing to help bail us out when we have problems with the foreign coaches. I do hope nff will pay him well and as at when due this time around. He is a pathetic coach, he is only patriotic because he is useless, and nobody wants him, he was also a very limited SE player. Mandate1: This is what you get when tribal and ethic sentiments is primary in designing and building national infrastructure.
Among the regions in Nigeria, the Easterners do more of the travelling, and it's natural for such litmus test through a novel project should put them into consideration first, since it's purely business oriented.
A East - west rail line would have made more sense, as this will create more avenue for local investors to even have their own coaches. Every Xmas, Igbos throng enmass to the east and same to Lagos and south west afterwards.
I'm not saying the Easterners are more deserving of such infrastructure than others, but using that as a testing ground wud aid better knowledge on how to adapt it in other areas where the citizens hardly commute like the easterners.
Nigeria can only get better when we become more nationalistic in approach. This is just stupid. An East-West railway line is not a priority. Railways linking the North to the Southern port should be the priority. An upgraded SDR railway that links the South-South ports (Warri, Port Harcourt, Onne, Calabar) to the North via the Eastern State, North Central and North East will transform the South East. |

Greattha: @ bolded.
I like the enthusiasm with which you've driven home your point...
However, riddle me this; what kind of feasibility study did they do that obviously didn't include efficient and effective operation of the rail system?
I bet the contractors went back to the BPP to request for variation yet...if you know, you know
IMHO, that's cos it was never intended to serve it's true purpose.
But I hear you. From day one, the railway has been mired in corruption, the same corruption that has destroyed the oil exporting sector; the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is responsible for the demise of the Abuja railway. Nigeria's corruption and destructive culture are responsible. The government should have outsourced the railway to a Western or Chinese company instead of the government officials stealing rail tickets and selling them on the black market. Okay, let's even leave out the fact that the crazy hold-up that's the norm everywhere in Lagos only happens in some areas in Abuja at peak hours,
Kindly explain why the light rail is dead, even when complete.
My own explanation is, it's USELESS!
it's there to fulfil a nonexistent purpose.
In Lagos, it will work fine. In Abuja......useless, at least for now and the nearest future.
You'll understand if you live or have lived in Abuja with its 8-lane roads and high-speed traffic. Chief, The Abuja Light rail is dead because of corruption and incompetence, even the Lagos Metro will not survive Nigeria's corruption, stealing tickets and selling them without remittance to the central government will destroy any operation. |

tete7000: Leave bloomberg alone. Despite the billions spent on it,the rail system is not working. That is an indictment already. If it is working, will they have the effontery to write? Learn to look inward and stop blaming others for your woes. Dead railway that gulped billions is a clear indication of incompetence and cluelessness. The failure of the railway is due to the government's incompetence and corruption, but to claim that the project is a wrong design is nonsense. I subscribe to Bloomberg and am well aware of their self-interest and politics, so let us not be misled that they are looking out for Nigerians. |

worksmart: It was a project initiated by the incompetent GEJ administration , which was meant to be complete well before the 2014 Commonwealth Games to help us successfully bid for the games.
Unfortunately like 99% of infrastructure projects at the time the project ground to a halt and was abandoned and PMB administration restarted and completed in 2018.
So now because it has shut down due to low patronage , does not mean it cannot be revived in the future , especially if it is linked to existing busy rail lines .
I am sure that even US where Bloomberg is based have their own share of obsolete completed "white elephant projects" but they love to find negativity in Nigeria and Africa in general. Rubbish! The incompetence is in the Bloomberg article which should have focused on the poor maintenance of the railway and not its implementation, Western nations are always trying to undermine the Chinese relation with Africa, and the project was completed within 4 years on time on a small $500 million loan. The project was a brilliant and well-executed project that was started by the OBJ Government, delivered by GEJ and commissioned by Buhari. The attached image illustrates the master plan of the project, Phase 1 in yellow has been completed and the integration of the international airport into the main city centre. The railway has to be expanded to incorporate the poor sectors of the city.

Greattha: They most likely didn't do feasibility studies. Definetly No SWOT analysis.
They usually embark on inefficient projects that they can use as front to loot.
It was probably an avenue for more looting hence it has served its purpose. They did feasibility studies, this is a very good project. The design that has been shared on this thread and demonstrates that the railway links the airport to Abuja City Airport t the city centre. Over the years, new settlements have been developed all over Abuja, and there is now a requirement to expand the project to integrate the poor sectors of the city. This is a brilliant project; maintenance and operational capital might not exist to operate the railway.. The yellow section has been completed. As usual, Bloomberg is just ignorant about Africa; they should have posted the map of the railway light shown below...

Before we swallow the Bloomberg report lets do our personnel investigation. Looking at the two plans below, confirm that this was a very good design linking the Airport to the commercial city centre. Upon opening in 2018, only the section between Abuja Metro Station and the Airport was operational, with an intermediate station at Idu. The remaining nine stations were originally scheduled to begin operations in 2020.
The rolling stock used for this line initially consisted of only three diesel rail coaches. A further three were scheduled to be delivered in mid-2020.[7]
From the opening, the rail line operated on a significantly reduced timetable in comparison to other worldwide light rail systems; with three daily departures from Idu to Abuja Metro Station, with two running the full length to the airport, on weekdays only.[8] The delivery of further rolling stock was anticipated to provide services every thirty minutes.
