Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, SAN and his innovative team laid that economic foundation for Oyo, Ogun and Lagos States before May 27, 1967. Some of the younger ones do not realize that Western House skyscraper on Lagos Island was built by Awolowo who was the Premier of the Western Region, and even a lot of investments in Real Estate or property developments were made on Lagos Island from the 1950s. Iganmu and environs were the boundaries between the Western Region and Lagos Island/FCT axis from what I gleaned from the archival documents years ago.
That man [Obafemi Awolowo] was ahead of his time! Aside from being a lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, he was even a reader of mystic philosophies and much more, so I am not surprised at his level of advanced thinking. I remember reading those facts about him in 1987 when he passed on peacefully at home and was given a State burial in Ikenne, Ogun State as a GCFR of Nigeria.
Even the building that Nigeria used as a High Commission in London from 1960 was fully owned and used by the Western Region as a diplomatic office but was transferred as a gift to Nigeria for use at independence in 1960!
Obafemi Awolowo was indeed on the same level in thinking with the late Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore whose books [like "From Third World to First"] I have read from cover to cover. The Yoruba folks were well on the way to gaining a First World status and this would have trickled down to most parts of Nigeria if the military had NOT truncated democracy, and introduced massive corruption as seen from the IBB to the Abacha years. There was corruption in democracy at different levels, but the system had a way of fishing the guilty ones out for trial in courts and for prison punishments. Fortunately as of 2023, with the application of innovative technologies, security, accountability and democracy can be enhanced with minimal corruption.

It’s this port that have attracted huge capital resources from every corner of Nigeria over the years and it is because of factors like this... like the consequent companies that got set up in lagos because of the proximity to the port and the huge human capital, and the embassies, and the international airport, and the big markets that Lagos IGR is no other states mate. It is this IGR that has helped the state government do things other’s can’t. Infact other states that are close to Lagos like Ogun and Oyo are enjoying the spill overs from this factors. The former administrative capital of Nigeria from 1914 to 1991 was Lagos Island NOT the much larger Lagos State which only came into existence on May 27,1967 [alongside 11 other newly created states] and created for the indigenes by General Yakubu Gowon.
Over 95% of the total landmass of Lagos State of today was located in the Old Western Region [Now Ogun State] and carved out to merge with the smaller Lagos Island. The massive developments and industrializations in the industrial estates of Ikeja, Isolo, Ilupeju, Iganmu, Badagry, Ojo, Epe, Ikorodu, Ibeju Lekki, etc, from the 1950s were done under the dynamic leadership of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, SAN, and his Action Group Party lieutenants. The nearby Apapa port served as one of the major exit points from the industrial estate hubs for the export of cocoa, palmnuts, and other cash crop commodities and finished goods to mainly Europe and America from the rich Western Region. It was on May 27,1967 that over 95% of Lagos State's landmass of today such as Ikeja, Agege, Mushin, Amuwo Odofin, Ojo, the entire Lekki Peninsula, Epe, Ikorodu, Badagry, etc, was carved out from the Old Western Region [Now Ogun State] to create the new Yoruba-owned Lagos State from the lands of the Ijebu and Awori-Yorubas.
So, massive industrial developments were already going on in all the industrial estates, the construction of Ikeja GRA, the first TV station in Africa in Ibadan, the then first skyscraper in Nigeria at Ibadan, and more of what is now Lagos State before the 1967 12 states creation.
Abuja is NOT the same as Lagos State, so it is very wrong for YOU to compare the two different geo-political entities. Lagos State is an independent state with indigenes just like the other 35 States and they all have NO similarities with the FCT [ Abuja] which was carved out from what is now Niger, Kogi, Kaduna, and Nassarawa States in North Central Nigeria to be used as a central Nigerian administrative capital in 1976 simply because Lagos Island belongs to indigenous Yorubas and was too small for further expansion. Even the British Colonialists who used Lagos Island as their administrative capital from 1914 to 1960 clearly stated that Lagos Island belongs to the Yoruba people as stated by Lord Lugard in the historical Colonial archives.
Lugard didn't want Lagos Island to be the administrative capital but chose Kaduna. Lugard stated that Lagos Island was small, enervating, and was already inhabited by the Yoruba natives. The British Home Government overuled him because Lagos Island was close to the Atlantic coast among other reasons.

1) Aerodrome GRA, Samonda: It was initially a facility for air travels until its transfer to the government of Oyo State during the Lam-Adesina administration as governor. It was later allocated 10 years ago. Currently, you would have to cough out close to N35 million to acquire over 1000 square meters to build a nice apartment for your family. From Bodija, Sango, UI, it is accessible. Arguably, it the most expensive and best gated in the state. It is fully residential and with a good road network.
2) Alalubosa GRA: It is close to the popular Alesinloye Market and Iyaganku. It’s uniqueness lies in the way it’s streets are named- Almond, Citrus, Orange, Pine etc. It is one of the most expensive in the state. Land speculators say you need to pay up to N25 million to get land there. Though not all the roads were tarred, most of them are motorable.
3) Jericho GRA, Idi-Isin: It is one of the earliest GRAs in the state. Many serving and former political office holders have exotic houses there. Apart from the fact that the residence of the Police Commissioner is there, it has the highest numbers of white men. A plot goes for as ‘low’ as N25 million.
4) New & Old Bodija Estates: Both Estates were the darling of many rich people till the 90s. Though it is difficult to get an unavailable land in both but between N17 million and N25 million, you will get a building to be demolished or remodelled later. Two former governors live there.
5) Agodi GRA: The Governor and other top officials of Oyo State reside in the area. Like Bodija, it was the darling of many big Nigerians in the 80s, especially during the Western Region. If you need a plot there, you are to buy an existing building. Between N21 million and N30 million will do.
6) Ikolaba Estate: it is very close to Agodi and Bodija Estates. It is an old estates but it is still the darling of many rich men.
7) Basorun Estate, Akobo: It is a very large estate. If not for the disrepair state of road that leads to the area, it is one of the areas people are moving into. Between N8 million and N15 million, you should be assured of a plot. Kolapo Ishola GRA: Formerly reserved for agricultural purposes by the administration of late former governor Kolapo Ishola, it looks like Aerodrome GRA. It is well gated. It is divided into various levels. It is also expensive. The price depends on the place you want.
9) Carlton Gate: It is a private estate sharing border with Kolapo Ishola Estate. Well gated and a well-paved road, it is also expensive.
10) Alao-Akala Estate: it is also not far Kolapo Ishola Estate, it has very beautiful buildings. Except for the dusty road, plots of land should have exceeded over N10 million.
OKE AGALA ESTATE
The total turnaround story of Oke-Agala Estate located at the notorious Igbo-Agala Yemetu area of Ibadan which used to serve as hideout of hoodlums is quite an interesting one. Now it has been fully developed and a plot of land is sold there as high as over 20 million naira. It is a well structured estate with good road network and several amenities.
ONIREKE GRA
Though it is a mixture of rich individuals living in Onireke GRA but the estate is known to be populated by Lebanese in Ibadan and that has been the case for a very long time now, perhaps because of its closeness to Dugbe (Central Business District) where most of their companies/businesses are located. It is a fully developed high brow/low density residential hub. Land or property here is quite expensive too.

The Binis got some loan words from the Yorubas and vice versa to some extent because of the contacts between Binis and Eastern Yorubas. There were large Yoruba trading communities in Edo, and parts of Delta centuries back and the people of Usen in Edo State also have direct ancestral ties or roots with Ile Ife which they have come to dialectically refer to as "Uhe" so Yoruba loan words are part of Bini-Edo dialect/language.
The Bini-Edos also had trading communities in Yorubaland especially in Owo and Akure in Ondo State. The Binis had their "Akure Ado" quarters in Akure but have been Yorubanized with intermarriage and usage of Yoruba names but they still remember their family compounds in Benin.
There are regional differences in foods, dialect, culture and more. So Amala which is a direct derivative of powdered yams and ewedu are very much part of the many delicacies and soups in Yorubaland from the Oyo people, just like pounded yam and the different varieties of efo riro and obe egusi are very much a large part of delicacies in Yorubaland especially Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Kogi, etc.
A female poster from Cross Rivers posted on this NL forum years back that many of the soups Ibos claim as their's were actually borrowed from the Efiks/Ibibios, etc. The Ibos of Aro, Ohafia, and more who live close to the borders with Ibibios, Annangs and Efiks do eat the same foods the Ibibios eat and even dress like them with those woolen hats and wrappers.
Recently, I've been seeing Banga soup among the soups some Ibo females on and off NL are claiming to be part of Ibo soup but they have given it the name: Ibo version of "Banga" soup. TMKsouth: Pretoria-based defence group Milkor’s 380 drone underwent a successful first test flight three years and seven months after the project kicked off.
The Milkor 380 is the largest drone built in Africa, with a wingspan of 18.6 metres, a continuous flight time of up to 35 hours, a range of up to 2,000km, and a maximum altitude of 9,000 metres.
The company is now conducting regular test flights and hopes to have four drones ready for the market by the end of 2023.
The Milkor 380 is controlled from the ground by three people, including a pilot, a commander, and someone to control the equipment onboard.
Daniël du Plessis, business development manager at Milkor, said the drone’s size is critical as it determines what equipment it can carry.
“Some of the sensors with which it is equipped are heavy. A larger drone can accommodate more of them and even weapons,”
The infrared and high-resolution cameras onboard allow the Milkor 380 to undertake observation, intelligence gathering, reconnaissance, and offensive missions.
It can also be used for conservation, combating land and sea poaching, and border control.
Milkor promotes the drone as a complete observation system. It offers a control room, maintenance programmes, logistics support for fuel and parts, operator training, and satellite and ground-based communication infrastructure.
The company doesn’t specify a price for the drone, as this varies based on each customer’s specifications. Milkor’s drones are entirely built in South Africa.
The company began testing the Milkor 380 with the South African Air Force in Cape Town.

The Yorubas are NOT desperately running to the East [Iboland] to pick any wives. More than 90% of Yoruba marriages involve Yoruba men and women if you check the "change of names" or "classified pages" in major newspapers! Other Yorubas in the Diaspora tend to marry their fellow Diapora Yoruba women in Cote d' Ivoire, Ghana, or American/Canadian/French/British women!
Most Yoruba men who marry Ibo-speaking women do so mainly from among Anioma women from Delta North. Agbor [Ika-speaking folks], Aniocha North and South, Ndokwa, Asaba and other Oshimili North and South areas, etc, of Delta State. I know this because over the years, I have come across some male friends and associates who have towed that line.
If they [Yoruba men] cross over the River Niger, they marry women from Onitsha, Ogbaru and other nearby areas that do not have ethnic hang ups or who have lived in Yorubaland or in major cosmopolitan areas of the world. Further more they could get married to a Rivers State, Akwa Ibom, or Cross Rivers indigene. The Yorubas also marry from predominantly Edo, Delta States, Kogi and Muslim communities.
The point is this:It is mainly the male and female Ibo Osus [Ibo outcast families] that get married more outside Iboland to non-Ibos such as Benue folks, Yoruba and Hausas. It was a group of sarcastic Lagos-based Ibo men on a recorded program that I listened to 3 years ago online that said so. It further AFFIRMED what I have known for decades that Ibos don't marry outside but prefer their own kind while calling other Ibos that marry other ethnic groups Osus.

Aerodrome GRA is a hot cake due to its location; it is on a well tarred major road, along Ojo Express road and a few metres away from the University of Ibadan. Privately owned estates are also springing up within the estate almost everyday.
JERICHO GRA
This is another government-owned estate in Ibadan and its existence is dated back to the colonial era. But now many new structures are springing up every now and then. In fact, Odua group, in partnership with a privately owned real estate company, recently constructed two beautiful estates within the estate.
ONIREKE GRA
Though it is a mixture of rich individuals living in Onireke GRA but the estate is known to be populated by Lebanese in Ibadan and that has been the case for a very long time now, perhaps because of its closeness to Dugbe (Central Business District) where most of their companies/businesses are located. It is a fully developed high brow/low density residential hub. Land or property here is quite expensive too.
AGODI GRA
Apart from being a residential estate for the powerful people, Agodi GRA prides itself as a clean and serene environment. In fact, it could be best described as the seat and home of power. This is where the Oyo State Secretariat, Governor’s office and house, the Deputy Governor’s house and the First Lady’s office, Army Officers Mess are all located. It also has the prominent Justice Wale Babalakin crescent where a plot of land goes for 50 million and above.
BODIJA GRA
Bodija is one of the oldest and most popular estates in Ibadan. It has old and new sides mostly with old structures, especially the old Bodija side. New Bodija is an improved phase of the the estate with mind-blowing structures. What however can’t be taken away from the estate is the fact that it is a peaceful, cool area for some highly placed people in the society. Bodija is fully occupied and one can hardly get free land except for the very few transfers from old owners. A property here costs nothing less than 25 to 30 million naira.
AKOBO GRA
This estate is no doubt one of the biggest in Ibadan; it has many phases within it. There is General Gas, Akala Way and other privately developed estates within it. Here you see master piece structures just like the other high tech estates around and property/land doesn’t come cheap there. A plot of land goes for 20 million naira and above, depending on the part of the estate. Akobo, especially the Akala Way, started enjoying massive boom when ex-Gov. Adebayo Alao Akala upgraded the road that links Kute, Olorunda back to Akobo-Ojurin. Hence the raod was named “Akala Way”. Akobo has also become real estate investors’ favourite site as it now houses many privately developed estates.

Kolapo Ishola GRA: Formerly reserved for agricultural purposes by the administration of late former governor Kolapo Ishola, it looks like Aerodrome GRA. It is well gated. It is divided into various levels. It is also expensive. The price depends on the place you want.
