outrage: Guy stop spewing rubbish and showing your ignorance. Its not the same, The begining is because it means "naira' but the ending part is different, because of the differnt denominations.,
Arabic and hausa are interwoven.. A lot of words in hausa are derived from arabic. Infact the origin of hausa is arabia, if you studied your history in early university you should know that, 'bayajida'
Where the caligraphy is placed doesn't mean anything.

I believe this should answer your curiousity, except you want to attach your own meaning to it..
The origin of Hausa is NOT Arabia. Though both of them are Afrasan, with Hausa in d Chadic subphylum and Arabic in d Semitic one, Hausa didnt originate from d Middle east or Arabia. In fact, Semitic (d only memba of Afrasan found outside Africa and its youngest) moved from Africa in its pre-proto form to d Middle east thousands of years ago where it coalescend and expanded....... @topic, its time for Arabic to be completely removd from all our currency. Just cant undastad why it was eva usd in d 1st place..

Oh! by the way @OP, it was important that you emphasized that these results do not necessarily mean that West AFricans were descendants of Ancient Egyptians, but just that there are some general and ancient relationship.

The Ancient Egyptians were in the main most probably a mix of Nilosaharans and Afrosans 'Black' Africans who migrated from a drying Sahara, wh absorbed some smaller groups of New Easterners over time. Their culture is however COMPLETELY African ('southern' African).

Yap!! Very interesting DNA results, esp that of Ramesses III being E1b1a.

It is remarkable that all the published aDNA (ancient DNA) done on ancient Egyptian mummies that I know of all indicate genetic profiles that are 'southern'. They are however still small though (just 4) and the field relatively young; really very interesting results are in the offing henceforth.

While we are at this topic, READ plz:

As 2012 closed, President Jonathan records another high in power supply, On December 23, 2012 the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry generated 4,500 megawatts. This is a significant improvement if we consider where we were in 2010 when President Jonathan assumed office as Acting President.

Of course, we are still nowhere in sight of the hullabaloo 40,000 megawatts of Vision 2020. And many homes and businesses have not witnessed much improvement in power supply in spite of the increase in generation. But there is a great difference between 2000mws in 2010 and 4,500mws in 2012 considering the long gestation period for power projects.

As the regulator of the sector, to see the year close at about 4,500 megawatts is a prediction come true. In July 2012, as electricity generation picked up after the massive drop in hydro power, there was so much reckless optimism in the air as many delighted public officials promised that we will end the year at about 9,000 megawatts. I knew that such expectation was unfounded because the fundamentals of the electricity industry do not assure such massive haulage of power.

I knew that it will be totally unrealistic to expect the NIPP to fire all its plants or even most of it before the end of the year, even as NIPP managers work very hard. I knew also that as much as the handshake between gas and power is getting firmer and the regulatory frameworks of the two sectors are more effectively interfacing, we still can’t expect delivery of gas to all the scheduled power plants in such a short time.

As a regulator, I crunched at the data coming from operators and debunked the expectation of 9,000 megawatts. But I promised that we will hit a princely 4,500 megawatts by December 2012 which is a significant increase from the 3,600 megawatts at that time.

In June 1, 2012 the electricity sector regulator — NERC — released the Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO-2). The MYTO had some set of inbuilt assumptions about the macroeconomic fundamentals that will affect generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. Some of them are inflation rate, exchange rate and cost of gas. It also has sets of technical assumptions like the generation availability, the power factor and the percentage of power sent out to the grid. MYTO subjects itself to biannual minor reviews to track changes in these variables.

Last week, NERC completed the minor review and the good news is that there were no significant deviations from the predictions of NERC to warrant a change in the wholesale price of electricity. Getting it right is important to driving the reform in the power sector. Unfounded optimism may lead to misappraisal of the gains of the sector and induce a loss of morale in steering forward the reform.

The key insight is that predictive power depends on ability to comprehensively assemble data and to analyze them intelligently. My prediction of 4,500 megawatts derived from the financial and technical assumptions which NERC used to build the Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO-2) model.

MYTO has restored confidence in the Nigerian electricity supply industry. It is that confidence that will enable Nigeria to generate and effectively transmit and distribute 40,000 megawatts in 2020 or soon thereafter. The restoration of confidence of international and domestic financial markets in Nigeria’s electricity market is the singular most important achievement of President Jonathan and not the growth in generation capacity, as desirable as it may be.

This is so because it is such confidence that will ensure periodic haulage of megawatts in a sustainable manner to keep pace with growth in population and energy demand. Even if by some miracle we cranked out 9,000 megawatts by end of 2012 and the market structure, including its financial protocols, does not guarantee prudent and efficient investment in the sector yearly, we will soon hit the bottom as we did in the late 1990s when per capita wattage became one of the lowest in the world.

President Jonathan can take pride as the president who created a real market of electricity in Nigeria. It is true that a robust electricity market is yet to emerge. But the building blocks are mostly in place. The President’s singular determination to reestablish the regulator and allow its independence was a game-changer.

Let us not forget that the nascent power sector was truncated and no foreign investment came for power projects when President Yar’Adua was ill-advised to disrupt the work of the regulatory commission. President Jonathan’s commitment to uphold the integrity of the regulated markets makes the difference between the old and the new.

Now, the success of the privatization of under-performing state assets is clearly in sight. The credit should go to both Professor Barth Nnaji and Ms Bola Onagoruwa who tenaciously pushed the wagon to the finishing line. But you get nowhere if President Jonathan and his deputy who chairs the National Council on Privatization do not guarantee a stable political and policy environment for privatization.

President Jonathan’s unusual transparency and disinterest in who becomes the preferred bidders shifted the mode from cynicism to enthusiasm. The history of such reforms in the past in this part of the world is a story of audacious takeover by the big man upstairs. Here in Nigeria, the world was pleasantly surprised at the rigorous process set up to guarantee that preferred bidders are competitive on technical and financial proposals.

They could not believe that Nigeria could present such quality of information and processes that encourage credible bidders to enter the game. The Nigerian power privatization is being studied as possibly the largest single privatization in electricity industry in the world.

—Dr. Amadi is chairman and chief executive officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC)

Hehehehe..... DESPERATION!!. PT (EL Rufai et al) and the resident Goons (propagandists) just had to find something, didnt they? grin grin

I probably would not have attempted to even 'humour' this with any response; but ehmm, just to make a clarification and later an important point.

This was the President's words:

“We moved, in 2007, from about a little below 3,000 MW production average.
“Now, we are generating more than 5,000MW (of electricity).
“But because of weak transmission infrastructure, we cannot evacuate,” the president said.
Some IGNORANT peeps do not know that Nigeria always had the ability to produce more power than she can actually successfully wheel to the public; in fact, even today Nigeria can generate more than 6000MWs of Electricity BUT for some factors that makes this impracticable, if not impossible for now. Some of those factors include insufficient (or unpredictable) gas supply, broken (or inefficient) units in power plants at any time, and critically inability to effective wheel (ie TRANSMIT and to some extent DISTRIBUTE) the generated power. This was why sometime during Yar'adua's time we produced 3800MW of Electricity and foolishly tried wheeling ALL of it to the power grid, resulting in a near complete SYSTEMS crash in less than 2 days that took public power supply to less than 2000MWs which we didnt recover from for some months.

My interpretation of what the President said was that Nigeria could produce more than 5000MWs of Electricity BUT (and this is usually a key OPERATIVE word in sentences where it appears) we dont wheel that much to the public cos we cant sustain it. The @emboldened of his quote supports this interpretation. At the time the Preident make this comment, we could wheel between 4000-4200MW of Electricity, but can now wheel between 4300-4500MW successfully.

The other point I wanted to make ( which is what really matters at the end of the day for millions of Nigerians anyways) is that GEJ met public power supply at less than 2800MW (some people will tell you less than 2500Mw, while others would say less than 2000MW- they are all correct cos the power supply then was very unstable) BUT has NOW stabilized it at between 4300- 4500MW (ie almost DOUBLED it) in 2 years. If other leaders were going at this rate, we would not have found ourselves in the present state that we are, which without missing words, is still far from where we ought to be. The Good thing though is that IT IS STILL IMPROVING, and would esp do so this year.

JUST to recap some of the response that was given when this same qusetion was asked BY ACN AND ITS GOONS here 2 days ago about some of the things the FG have been doing with their share of the fund:

The FG promised to provide 'Direct' JOBS Invention' in 3 ways:

- YOUWIN programme, where young entrepreneurs are meant to submit their business plans from which 1200 of them will be selected by an international Consultancy Firm ON MERIT, and then mentored and given various sums of monies bw #1m-#10m to set up/run their businesses and employ other persons (Already, this programme has been widely adjourned SUCCESSFUL with the 1st set of 1200 persons selected on MERIT and given their 2nd tranche of money already. A 2nd set of 1200 female entrepreneurs are been selected already in a similarly TRANSPARENT process).
http://indepthnewsng.com/fg-releases-second-tranche-of-youwin-payments/

- Graduate Intensive Scheme, which is funded by the SURE-P and meant to attach 50,000 young Degree/HND graduates to some companies where they would have the opportunity to be employed after one year and will be paid some stipends by the FG during that time (the advert for this programme was everywhere from July/August this year, and already some of the successful names have already been released and in the process of been posted to the interested companies)
http://www.naijafinder.com/nigeria-job-vacancies/194806-federal-government-graduate-internship-scheme-verification-1st-batch-interns.html

- Lastly, the 370,000 jobs promised youths and women(yea, its 370,000 not 37,000- 10,000 each for the 36 states and Abuja of course) .

But this is how this works- the FG and each state Govt are supposed to collaborate to run the programme in each state with the FG paying for 5000 persons while the particular state pays for the other 5000; some states are already doing their part in this respects and are setting up their programmes, while some states are stalling (IRONICALLY, only reecently, an ACN state was accussed by the state SURE-P coordiantor of not cooperating- the FG particularly accused the Osun Govt recently of playing POLITICS and stalling the programme in the state). As you already mentioned, Abuja, which is under the direct control of the FG, have already employed 4000 persons out of their 10000 slot.
Oh, by the way: states have ALL receive their share of the subsidy money rom the Federation account as promised, from which they were supposed to pay their own 5000 persons (amongst other things).

Very Apt question @OP. Shee it was the same ACN and their goons herethat asked the FG the same question TWICE on the FG 2 days ago? They were SHOUTING then. SURELY, it wouldn't be too easy to respond to the same question thrown back at you na? Piece of Cake really!!

SO we are clear, see:

Since the partial removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government seven months ago, a whopping N248.85bn has been shared by the three tiers of government under the Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Programme.

The money shared was savings made from the partial fuel subsidy removal.

The amount, our correspondent gathered, was based on the budgeted monthly provision of N35.55bn credited to the SURE-P account by the Federation Account Allocation Committee.

Of the N248.44bn, the Federal Government got N105bn, representing a monthly allocation of N15bn for the seven months; while the balance of N143.55bn was shared by the states and local governments.

A breakdown of the N35.55bn shared by the states in July revealed that Akwa Ibom got the highest amount of N1.83bn; while Rivers got N1.46bn; Delta, N1.40bn; and Bayelsa, N1.09bn.

Abia got N364.9m; Adamawa, N393.3m; Anambra, N394.08m; Bauchi, N456.52m; Benue, N439.43m; Borno, N494m; Cross River, N389.13m; Ebonyi N285.76m; Edo N446.3m; and Ekiti, N301.1m.

Others are Enugu, N347.1m; Gombe, N297.42m; Imo, N469.75m; Jigawa, N454.62m; Kaduna, N504.13m; Kano, N718.6m; Katsina, N535.7m; Kebbi, N390.29m; Kogi, N395.9m; Kwara, N335.93m; Lagos, N540.48m; and Nassarawa, N296.6m.

Similarly, Niger State got N475.26m; Ogun, N376.59m; Ondo, N533.08m; Osun, N406.47m; Oyo, N515.89m; Plateau, N364.73m; Sokoto, N415.93m; Taraba, N366.13m; Yobe, N360.05m; Zamfara, N352.01m; and the Federal Capital Territory, N56.77m.

The Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Yerima Ngama, had said the states and local governments would not receive their share until they opened separate accounts for the fund.

This, he noted, would enable the Federal Government to track how the fund was being used.

He said, “The subsidy re-investment fund is supposed to be paid to the states and local governments separately into a special account that they should open and we expect them to also forward to the ministry the programmes that they intend to use the subsidy re-investment fund for in order to alleviate the condition of our people.

“But every state is free to determine what it wants to do with its subsidy re-investment fund. It doesn’t have to be what the Federal Government is doing, but you can come and complement what the Federal Government is doing in your own state. So, the distribution will be made separately so that we will be able to hold people completely accountable.”

Findings, however, revealed that the majority of the states in a bid to begin the implementation programme, had been responding to the directive.

For instance, Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State last week inaugurated a committee for the implementation of the programme.

The SURE programme provides for the implementation of short-term social welfare schemes to alleviate the impact of subsidy removal on Nigerians.

Some of these are the construction, completion and rehabilitation of rail, refineries, key federal highways, hydro stations, information technology and water projects.

The programme will also fund mass transit, public works, training for unskilled youths and social services to reduce high maternal and infant mortality rates.

It is being managed by the SURE-P committee headed by Dr. Christopher Kolade.

The committee is saddled with the responsibility of “mitigating the immediate impact of the removal of fuel subsidy and accelerate economic growth through investment in critically needed infrastructure.”

Of the Federal Government share of the SURE-P fund, it was learnt that N21.7bn had already been set aside for the construction of the East-West road.
http://www.punchng.com/business/business-economy/subsidy-savings-fg-states-lgs-share-n248-85bn/

The FG has FULFILLED the promise made to Nigerians early this year to SET ASIDE the funds saved from the removal of subsidy and distribute same to all the Tiers of Govt, in order to fund SPECIFIC infrastructure projects (like Rails, Roads and Bridges) and Job Creation measures (like Graduate Internship Scheme). This promise have been/ is been Kept.

Now, what has the states including the ACN controlled ones(who have received at least an average of #300million EACH month) done with their own part of the subsidy money. What projects or programmes have they used the subsidy money they have received to do? Shee, they are puking their mouths into FG's share??

Thanks for the ANTICIPATED RESPONSE.

Recently, President Jonathan assured us that in 2013, electricity generation would improve considerably.

This is possible because the signs are there already. Everybody is seeing the steps being taken to make unreliable electricity supply a forgotten issue. In the manufacturing sector, we are enjoying electricity now than before and we are yet to get to 2013. This means that before 2013 ends, there will be a lot of difference. Before now, our electricity consumption was just 10 per cent from public power supply and 90 per cent generator. But today, it has gone up to 60 per cent. The only problem is that the tariff is high. But to me, it is better that the tariff is high and the power supply is steady than for the tariff to be low and power is not steady. Steady supply of power at reasonable cost is essential for the survival of industries.
Later some persons would be saying that power supply have not improved in Nigeria in the last 2 years. This is a Big time Manufacturer saying this, something the LCCI also said this year. The effect of the President raising power generation form about 2000-2400MWs to 4300-4500MWs in 2 years; and like Innoson also said here, one hopes that when the Privatization and more power projects gets completed this year, even more remarkable changes would have been made

The manufacturing sector did better in the year 2012 than in recent years, because the present government has been giving attention to the area. She has been coming out with many incentives to encourage local industries. This government has shown in many ways that it is interested in improving activities in the manufacturing sector.

The Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr. Olusegun Aganga, has been making a lot of efforts to improve things in the sector. So, with all the things they have been doing, there was remarkable improvement in the sector in 20012. And one thing I need to point out is that anytime there is a problem and you draw their attention to it, they look into it and provide a solution. That is very commendable. I urge the government to continue this way because, if the encouragement they gave manufacturers in 2012 is extended to 2013, there would be a lot of improvements.

You mentioned Dr Aganga. So, you think the minister is doing well?

Yes, the way he looks into our problems is very encouraging. He is doing very well. I urge him to continue and do more for manufacturers.
Was this not what the umbrella body of all manufacturers in Nigeria MAN (Manufacturer Association of Nigeria) said recently, esp as it relates to the increase in the Utilization capacity of industries.
I join Innoson in Praying that all these steps been taking by the FG would bear even more sustainable fruits in 2013 and beyond.

The President has said that those who were involved in the bombing of churches in Niger state and public institutions including the United Nations building and the Police headquarters have all been arrested.

President Goodluck Jonathan was at the New Year service held at the All Saints Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion; zone 5 Wuse in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.

He described the Boko Haram terror attacks, kidnapping in the south east and armed robbery as momentary challenges saying the public may not be aware of what security operatives are doing because it is not all security issues that are made open to the public promising that his administration will overcome the issue of terrorism in the country.

On unemployment, the president said he will not only create jobs but will create opportunities that will encourage more Nigerian youths to get into entrepreneurship that will turn them into employers of labour rather than the penchant to make quick money.

In his sermon, the Primate of the Anglican church of Nigeria; Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh called on Nigerians to circumcise their hearts in order to make way for a progressive Nigeria in 2013.
http://www.channelstv.com/home/2013/01/01/president-jonathan-promises-to-overcome-terrorism/

And for the benefit of the illiterates here, the President DO NOT HAVE ANY POWERS TO INTERFERE WITH THE PROCEEDING OF A SUSPECT ALREADY BROUGHT TO COURT, and I mean no powers whatsoever; the pace of the judgement, pending the work of the prosecutors, is entirely up to the court system.

Plus, all over the world the prosecution of terrorist suspects take a significant amount of time, not just cos they are criminal cases that demands 'proof beyond ALL reasonable doubts' but cos the Intelligence community usually stall the arraignment of such suspects cos of their high value 'on-going' intelligence importance. The main Sept 11 suspects are still in Guatanamo Bay for a reason.

Congrats Afam...You need to do two things:

- Eliminate tribalism completely on NL (or do so to the extent of your ability);

- Impress it on the minds of other MODS that they should quit the obvious BIAS and PERSONAL SENTIMENTS that sometimes affected/affects their duties on NL.

Congrats again....

Eziachi: Ekwueme stole public money to build his modotel hotels and breweries and was found guilty, name one thing you knew Shagari stole.
Because am Igbo doesn't mean I am suppose to support any Igbo rogue in the name tribal loyalty.
This is not about Ekwueme or Shagari et al. Dont insult our intelligece by trying to diverge from the main thrust of this topic: Abacha and Buhari ran a programme which was MOSTLY funded by the a certain region (the south) but whose MAJOR beneficiary, by more than 70%, was another region (the north) which was their region of course. THIS IS WHAT THE @OP's THREAD IS ALL ABOUT.

Figures, clear figures were given; what you or any person who want us to think (or infer) otherwise should have done from the start is to contest these figures by providing counter-ones,before any sort of argument is made. I personally need to see these counter-figures so that I can make honest inferences from same. Anything apart from this is simply HOT AIR, and I no sane person is going to take you seriously otherwise.

PLZ COUNTER THE INFO PRESENTED BY THE @OP OR QUIT TROLLING.
The Abacha regime created a parallel government through the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) headed by Major General Muhammed Buhari. Nothing else typifies the marginalisation of the Yoruba than the lopsidedness of the projects carried out by the PTF. Figures from PTF Situation Reports (Vol. 2 Dec. 98) show that the PTF carried on as if there was no South West.

Of all the roads rehabilitated by he PTF, only 1984.5 kilometres of roads representing 10.84 per cent were carried out in the South West; from where the bulk of the PTF revenue came since the zone consumes over 60 per cent of refined petroleum products. All the Southern States had 4,440.43 kms or 24 per cent of road rehabilitation as against 13,870.47 kms or 76 per cent in the Northern States zone three comprising the North-West States of Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara had a lion share of 5020 kms or 27.42 per cent because the Fund’s Chairman, Buhari and the military dictator Sani Abacha were from there; zone four comprising the North-East States of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe picked 23.48 per cent. This is the zone where Salihijo Ahmed, the late Chief Executive of Afri-Project Consortium APC, the sole consultants that supervised all PTF projects came from.

Figures in other sectors were more scandalous. For instance, under the National Health and Educational Rehabilitation Programme (NHERP), the South West had zero allocation in the tertiary programme, while the North picked 100 per cent. In the vocational programme, the South West had zero while the North had 97 per cent. In the primary area, the South-West had zero against 88 per cent for the North and in the secondary area, it was zero for the South-West and 86 per cent for the North.

The health sector is similar. For the Teaching Hospitals, the South-West had zero while the North had 62 per cent. For the Specialist Hospitals, it was zero for the South-West and 71 per cent for the North; in General/State Hospitals the Yoruba had nothing while the North had 56 per cent for health clinics, it was zero for the South-West against the North’s 100 per cent.

Under the food supply summary, the Southwest had 7.26 per cent compared with 83 per cent for the North, Buhari’s zone having 60.54 per cent to itself.

Sincere 9gerian: Though majority of the persons who rant on this thread are BLINDED by partisan and ethnoreligous sentiments, so much so that no amount of information will make them change their mind or speak good of the incumbent, but there are still fair minded persons who see things from an unbiased perspective. For the benefit of such persons and to set the records straight, the funds saved from partial subsidy removal and packaged as SURE-P, have been used to intervene in the following areas(not exhaustive):
1) completion of rehabilitation of Lagos-kano rail line
http://dailyindependentnig.com/2012/12/sure-p-fg-resuscitates-lagos-kano-train-service-with-n1b/
http://savidnews.com/1126-kilometre-lagos-kano-rail-services-reactivated-via-sure-p/
2) ongoing rehabilitation of other rail line routes including :
-eastern rail line expected to be completed in late 2013 (N2.2billion committed to the project so far)
http://www.punchng.com/business/business-economy/sure-p-fg-releases-n17-8bn-for-mass-transit-empowerment/
-Abuja-kaduna standard rail line(150km per hr). So far N2.3 billion expended on it from SURE-P
http://www.punchng.com/business/business-economy/sure-p-fg-releases-n17-8bn-for-mass-transit-empowerment/
3) important roads including Abuja-lokoja, Benin-Ore, East-West road, Kano-Maiduguri road and Enugu- Onitsha road are receiving EXTRA funds from SURE-P to bring them to quick completion

http://www.sure-p.gov.ng/index.cfm/media-publication/press-release/sure-p-committee-hold-16th-plenary-appraisal-of-contractors-top-agenda/
4) also various job creation interventions including the women and youth empowerment programme meant to recruit 10,000 persons per state. Yes, it is slow but it is ongoing in many states and FCT
http://www.punchng.com/business/business-economy/sure-p-fg-releases-n17-8bn-for-mass-transit-empowerment/

There are many other interventions but these are the ones I can produce for now
Am reposting this in case these goons didnt see this the 1st time, lol

Sincere 9gerian: "It was the reduction of the pump price of fuel from #65 to #60 in 2007 that triggered the increase in subsidy payments. Yar'adua used that reduction to gain some level of legitimacy, following wide condemnations dat trailed his election. The FIFA under 17 world cup in Nigeria in 2009 prevented Yar Adua from total removal of subsidy because he didnt want Nigerians to protest while we had foreigners in our midst. He travelled 2 saudi 2days before the policy could be effected & never came back"- Olusegun Adeniyi (Politics, Power and Death)
Very Interesting Info...and this is coming from Adeniyi, the Spokesman of Yar'adua. One of d only 2 'achievements' of President Yar'adua (the oda been Amnesty to ND militants) just went up in flames....
