See how the propagandists hv descended on this piece of info, distorting things. Smone shld plz tell me if am wrong in dis interpretatn of wot Amadi said: dat during d dry season power supply 4rm hydro will decrease by just 300MW(we knew dat power 4rm hydro will decrease bt unlike wot sm persons were previously insinuating, it will just decrease by 300MW. ) Generatn is currently at 4477 MW so assuming there was no further increase of power we will hv above 4000MW available BUT Amadi actuali said there wud be an increase b4 d end of d yr just dat it wud be realistically above 5000MW(plz read d article again- so if dry season means a small 300MW decrease 4rm 4477MW while power wud likely increase to not more dan 5000MW b4 d end of d yr, it means dat we wud actuali put more dan 800MW additional power to d grid b4 d end of d yr just as sm oda officials hv said). He furda said there wud be even markd improvements months 4rm nw(probably due to evacuatn of more power and more importantly, PRIVATISATION of d sector dat is concluding late Sept/Oct). PLZ read d article yrself away 4rm d few gang of Propagandists we hv...to say 4rm dis article dat d increase we hv had in power was due to 300MW and dat 2800MW + 300= 4477MW is asinine
Culture › Re: Soninke (serahule) People And Ghana Empire by taharqa: 11:39pm On Aug 26, 2012
@Thiendella. Great write-up. But just some small corrections:

1. Kumbi Saleh was not a pioneer city, there were already other huge cities hundreds of years before the height of Kumbi in the Western Sahara/Middle Niger Region.

2. Yea like many hundreds of cities in the region at that time, the city space was made up of at least two parts- the King's City proper and the Merchants city . But am not sure it is not really true that this Merchant part was inhabited mainly by Arabs and "Berbers" but I think by Merchants who would have included the aforementioned though majority of them would have been more indigenous ones like Dyulas and even Soninkes themselves. The idea that the were somehow a "foreign" element of the city landscape is probably wrong.

3. The Almoravid invasion(if in deed it did happen as there are still some controversy with the "event" itself ) did not at all lead to the demise of Kumbi Saleh or its surroundings . Archaeological and textual evidences show continuity(albeit of a less intense one) at its core sites through the 12th Millennium AD up to around the 15th Millennium AD. The Almoravid destruction of Ghana is a MYTH- in fact the Almoravid movement itself was significantly influenced by polities in Sahel West Africa like Tekrur, Zafun and even Gahana etc.

Once again, great write up, we ought to know more abut "our" history.

On the story itself- I have very little trust in the reports of today's Mass Media so I will wait to find out if this sentiment is shared openly by some northern leaders or a significant chuck of the society over there before I say anything- and there is much to say.
I notice the report said a Group of Youths worte the letter, so they may just be acting for themselves only and not the general population of the north; and since I dont attribute the doings of a few on the whole, I will wait.

Politics › Re: The President Nigerians Know By Paul Adepoju by taharqa: 8:12pm On Aug 26, 2012
Starlett: By Paul Adepoju
It was with a rare blend of shock and utmost surprise that I read Dr. Reuben Abati's write-up on a Sunday morning, right in the presence of the Lord where nothing is hidden before the Most High. As expected, the veteran journalist dwelt more on portraying the president as a leader who has the interest of the nation at heart.

He also fired word missiles at the self-appointed social media activists thus: "we have a lot of unintelligent people repeating silly clichés and too many intelligent persons wasting their talents lending relevance to thoughtless conclusions."

I agree with Dr. Abati on the contamination of public commentary, I however disagree with his assertion that lots of the commentators are unintelligent while the intelligent ones are wasting their talents, since he belonged to the same demography before pledging his allegiance to the presidency.

Obviously, he knows more about what a larger percentage of Nigerians don't know about the man - Goodluck Jonathan, a man he also criticised from a distance prior to his appointment as the president's media henchman. So it's not unexpected for him to publicly clamour for fairer consideration of the president who could go down in history as having the lowest approval rating.

Having a closer relationship with people in government is something that has proven severally to be counter-productive for the machinery of governance because it clouds one's objective assessment of the situation at hand.

On the notion that the president has good intentions for Nigeria, Dr. Abati and everyone at the presidency should know that Nigerians do not doubt that. As a matter of fact, all past presidents had (and still have) good intentions for our nation. The bone of contention however is not unrelated to the inability of the president to bring his brilliant intentions hanging somewhere in the skies to reality.

Despite national and international outcries that characterised the military junta, former heads of government such as Generals Sanni Abachi and Gbadamosi Babangida took the oath because they all had good intentions for the nation.

Extending this beyond the scope of government, one could unequivocally say that even the Nigerian contingent to the 2012 London Olympics had good intentions; they wanted to make the nation proud but their good intentions were inconsequential. Same could be said of the president.

As the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces whose primary role is to ensure the safety of Nigerians, the spate of suicide bombings, ethno-religious crisis, extra-judicial killings and several others could make Nigerians doubt the intention of the president. In other words, Nigerians aren't doubting GEJ's intentions, they just aren't sure he can handle the challenges of his office effectively since thousands of homes daily mourn the demise of their loved ones as a result of circumstances that past presidents would have controlled effectively without bloodshed.

On alcoholism in Aso Rock, Dr. Abati ought to know that Nigerian constitution is silent about drinking alcoholic beverages at the presidential villa hence it's left to the occupant, current occupant, to decide whether he will perform better under the mild or strong influence of emu oguro (fresh palm wine) or ordinary Zobo drink. All Nigerians care for is a vibrant president who is tackling all their problems.

One of the major reasons why the presidency is being tongue- and word-lashed extensively are his visits to countries where the governments are doing well; his inability or reluctance to introduce such reformations to better the lots of Nigerians whose taxes, sweats and shares of the nation's oil wealth are fuelling the presidential jets.

As a veteran journalist who has written copiously on politics and government, Dr. Abati can't expect the president to enjoy the support of all Nigerians; neither will they cheer him on since this isn't a kindergarten class!

I guess they need to be reminded that Nigeria is the world's largest black nation and the president is responsible for the fate of over 150 million people belonging to more than 300 ethnic groups; people who are vast and diverse as shown in recent world studies that described them as the happiest, the most spiritually faithful, most unfaithful, and most sexually active - yes we are.

So, instead of attempting to force the love of Goodluck Jonathan down the sore throats of Nigerians, Dr. Abati could do Nigerians, especially the loyal readers of his Friday and Sunday tirades on the pages of Guardian newspapers, much good by using his closeness to the president to give him a frank assessment of what Nigerians really want.

Despite the fact that the president feels he's being unfairly crucified by the media and activists who are always asking him to resign, he should know that Nigerians aren't asking him to bring the moon to bar beach, or the sun to the oil creeks; they only want security and the basic things of life in addition of signs that show that the president truly care about the plight of Nigerians by keeping to his promise.

Dr. Abati's carefully written and scrutinized piece left out the various tell tale signs that made many Nigerians lose hope on the president's ability to restore fading hope.

A BBM broadcast is currently circulating; it is laced with the president's various promises while campaigning across the nation. So far, none of them has been satisfactorily fulfilled.

He also reneged on a number of promises including his pledge during the fuel subsidy uproar to reduce his foreign trips and entourage.

However, like some fellow Nigerians, I'm having second thoughts about the man Goodluck Jonathan. Obviously, lots of things are wrong with his administration but he's making some risky bold steps which if successful could change the public perspective about him from a weakling to an intelligent president. PHCN is one of such.

So, instead of wasting public resources in recruiting media experts to "rebrand" and make the presidency "look good" to Nigerians, the president and his numerous committees need to work harder, sacrifice more, travel less and tackle more problems that will make life easier and safer for Nigerians.

Unlike Reuben Abati, Nigerians don't see the president every day, but they see his handiworks in the high pump price of fuel and the incessant bomb blasts up north. According to them, the president they know isn't working hard enough.

Politics › Re: Reuben Abati: The Jonathan They Dont Know by taharqa:
I have read through all the comments here esp those insulting the President(ie "the he is the worst President CROWD" ) and cant make any sense of what they are saying. Honestly, I want to make sense of it. I didnt vote for GEJ in the last elections cos of the antecedents of his party yet it seems that I am supporting him now not just cos I see some of the strategic things he is presently DOING(work in progress) but cos those ppl who virulently oppose him have done a terrible job at intellectually letting others know exactly why this President is the worst President we ever had.

The worst President in Nigeria's history? Really? This is a President that is overseeing the most significant turn-around in the Power Sector not just in the Generation, Transmission and Distribution of electricity but esp in the Privatization of the sector which is at its concluding stages now(I dont know of any other infrastructural undertaking by any govt that would be more transformational than this); this President has brought the trains back to life, rehabilitating all the existing rail tracks across country(actually most of them have already been completed) while some modern rail tracks are also been constructed; this is the President that has completed the dredging of the Lower River Niger(he will be commissioning the Onitsha River Port this week) and is dredging the River Benue; this is the President who is overseeing the most massive refurbishment and remodeling of about 11 airports across Nigeria in other to reduce the disgrace that most of our airports were(if any of you travel through the airspace recently you would have seen work going on- Kano International Airport is almost complete); this President has reduced the time spent by goods in the ports and improved efficiency by decongseting the ports, beginning 24/7 prt services and reducing port agencies and bureaucracies( when last did hear of the huge and disgraceful Demurrage costs that used to be associated with Nigeria ports)- the main artery Route to the two main ports, Apapa-Oshodi has reached an advanced stage of repairs, its Trailer Park, a dedicated bridge leading into Tin-Can Island Port from Liverpool Round-About are alos be constructed whilst the railtracks to the ports are been repaired. Do ppl understand the consequences of all these on Nigeria's ecnmy going further. This is the President that provided leadership in reforming our terrible electoral system( ppl seem to have forgotten that all the present reforms in our elections starting when he became acting President- sack of Iwu, Constitutional reviews on electoral matters, financial autonomy of INEC, new voting system including posting results at pooling booths, conclusion of electoral matters 6months to the date of submission etc etc ), in fact NO Nigerian leader has ever presided over the most transparent elections in Nigeria's history- starting from Anambra Elections in 2010 to the Edo state elections recently including of course the 2011 General Elections; this President is also by far the most open(relatively) ever in Nigeria- while Obj and Yar'adua for in stance refused to sign the FOI bills(Obj saying that he didnt like the title and Yar'adua's top aid saying it was dangerous for Nigeria's "security" ), the FOI bill was amongst the 1st bills that GEJ signed when he came on board- all these openesss and tolerance is why ppl we for instance have access to budget details and can question the amount Aso rock uses in feeding itself an info that was treated almost as a "state secret" in previous administrations. These are just some areas I wish to highlight(there are others like Agriculture and Investments- unlike what ppl want to believe there are actually more investments in the economy than those that leave such that Nigeria was the highest recipient of FDI in Africa last year in spite of the Security issues). SO how can any one with a straight face tell me that he is the "worst President ever"(cos I would ask : COMPARED TO WHOM? ) or that he is not even doing well considering the huge distractions he had had to put up with. In fact apart from Security(Hopefully, there are now beginning to be signs that the Security Services are beginning t get some grip over the peculiar security challenges. ) I cant find any major area of our economy that has deteriorated (though of course most still have a long way to go).

Is there room for more work? Yes. There is no questions. But he was elected for 4 years and have just spent 1 year. I is unfair and hypocritical to behave as though he is the cause of Nigeria's HUGE problems. He met them. In my view he is doing more than any Nigerian president to tackle them, he just needs our support whilst keeping him on his toes.

PS: This is not really for some of the few persons who have vowed to oppose this admin out of HATE and/or Lust for Power. I expect them to behave as though they didnt see this and if by chance they respond, I expect insults or soundbites. This is for every other person who is willing to test their assumptions. I am willing to test mine.

Pataki: You are DAFT! What an utter dunderhead you resounding doofus. Do you people think even before hitting your keyboard?! Eediot, Yar'Adua remains the president who ever reduced the price of fuel in Nigeria. Tell me, what was GEJ's new year gift to Nigeria this year? You cretin. Where are the oil subsidy thieves today? How many Nigerian lives have been lost under this administration of this CLUELESS RETARDEEN? No president in Nigeria has EVER had this high astronomical loss of human lives not animals here, high spate of insecurity and gross unemployment that Nigeria is currently been faced with it! You eediots are here praise singing the gutter RETARDEEN of a president.

Eediots like you - your GEJ budgets billions of Naira as feeding allowance, while Reuben tells us his meals are simple. Who is lying to us here? Who are they feeding inside Aso Rock - elephants?

Disgusting eediot.
THis is all you can do INSULT- that is exactly why you guys sound unintelligent every time. How about we should talk about the points cos I dont have the time to trade silly banters with you(believe me you wont dare say your thrash if not on the internet- COWARD).

Now back to the points(hopefully):

1. So the only "achievement" you found for Yar'adua was that he reduced fuel from #70 to #65(This is his achievement for 3 years of presidency, rigth?). So if GEJ reduced the price of petrol to say #30, he becomes the best president in Nigeria's history? And you were saying you are not unintelligent and almost Daft?. How has your little mind forgotten that Yar'adua said he was going to remove subsidy before he died?
2. Oil subsidy thieves are been prosecuted and some of them have already started returning the money they fraudulently took. Maybe you have not been following the news- but how can you with all that HATE in your mind. Tell me which of the President(Obj, Yar'adua) where people also stool did this much, did anything about the corruption in the oil sector? The subsidy payment has also been cleaned-up by the PPPRA which has decreased the no of companies allowed to import the product by more than half and have significantly reduced the volume of product been imported.
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/08/well-call-another-strike-if-government-reneges-after-two-weeks-nupeng/
3. The Security crises created by some of you people to discredit GEJ as some of you promised is been tackled.
4. Your silliness have made you forgotten that the money sat aside to feeding(which has been reduced from #1billion by the way) is NOT for the President alone but for all the hundreds of officials in Aso Rock and their families, guests, state dinners for visiting personalities etc. By the way, where were you guys when the former lords of Aso Rock not only used bigger amounts but also unlike GEJ did not even let you know how much the State House uses. Was that not a "state secret" before? It is the relative transparency of this admin that is giving some of you power mongers a false sense of significance #Hypocrites

I recall when Obasanjo STARTED this Import Substitution Policy for Cement some years ago, very many people almost ate him raw(shouting about price of the cement etc) just like they are presently doing with the moves to do same for Rice, Cassava, Fertilizers etc. For eg, most of the people foolishly criticizing the recent Cassava move of the govt do not consider the fact that Nigeria spends more than #600billion each year(our single largest import bill apart from Petroleum) to import Wheat mostly rom the USA and concomitant "export" of jobs. Same ignorant attitude is also shown in the Rice Import substitution move.

Some decisions just have to be taken , and am glad that this govt is pushing on with its sound import substitution policies.

that oil prices would crash and Nigeria's revenue from oil exports also crashes
I pray that cost of fuel is raised some more to its maximum.
I pray that electricity collapses completely.

I pray that all this happens immediately within a day or so.

There is a DIRECT nexus bw d terroists in Mali and AQIM in Algeria nd BH in Nigeria?why do u tink BH is currently on d run if not 4 d fact dat d contacts nd help they were previously getting 4rm outside in terms of men, money and resources are bn cut-off by d military nd intelligence services in cooperatn wit oda coun3s in d region. Ask Pakistan wot it had had to bear cos of Afganistan in its backyard; ask Kenya d no of bombs dat hv gone off in its land cos of Somali nd why its army is nw fighting in Somali against al Shabab. Global terroists like al Queda usuali seek 4 Weak/Poor coun3s nd regions as dier base 4rm where they spread terror. They re currently running away 4rm Afganistan, Yemen nd Somali cos of d drones nd hv ran to northern Mali(by d way, most of these terroists are not Malians but ppl 4rm across d islamic world including BH Nigerians) and sm of u re foolishly saying cos of ignorance dat 9jeria shld not be concernd? This is d one time dat 9jeria's interventn in oda coun3s mks a lot of sense cos any foothold of global terroists in Mali or d Sahel coun3s will spell DOOM 4 9jeria nd West Africa. not only will current terroist acts in 9ja escalate but d BH thing as it is will be a child's play.

Nigeria "played" the USA when they were putting huge pressure on us to intervene in Somali; we kept telling them that we will intervene. Till this day we havent sent troops there cos our immediate interests were not in jeopardy and also cos there were real risks of intervening in alShabaab-invested Somali. In this case however, we MUST be engaged cos it is critical for our current and future stability.

There are certainly some demerits though in intervening but we may have no choice really cos allowing an international group of terroists to turn our background into another Afganistan would be a most cravious error. The Negotiations and souring up of the govt in Mali is the first good step.

PhysicsQED: The Tuareg will just revolt again after the uprising is quelled. They've revolted multiple times before now, so just give them a country in the desert already.

Mali should split like Nigeria should split. Just get all the leaders at a table and draw up the territories of the new nations.
The problem is that there is not really a territory per se available for the Tuaregs. They are mostly nomadic who roam a large chunk of the Sahel- Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Chad, Algeria, Libya and even Nigeria. They also live amongst other people who believe they are indigenous. Even northern Mali is not at all a "Tuareg Territory" cos they are others like Songhai, Fulani, Mandinka etc also indigenous to the area. It will be difficult, if not impossible to give them "their" own territory.

Politics › Re: New-List Of President Goodluck Jonathan's Achievements by taharqa:
lordriko: I can't imagine someone come on nairaland listing out GEJ's achievements, am not pro or con but stands for the true reality. my question is what are the responsibilities and obligations of the president? As a father and the head of a family I understands my own responsibilities and obligations in my own little way. I call this sponsored, cheap campaign and electioneering. Mr president has tried in his own little way but you don't call that achievements. Now let me bring you this to your knowledge: I access the economy based on the amount I give to my wife and what she put on the table,I buy the water I drink, I buy fuel for my gen on a daily basis,in a growing economy it shouldn't be so. Our GDP is out on point. Our depth rate is becoming alarming. The so call subsidy cabals are on top of the economy, the political will to tackle insecurity is zero, our education standard is falling day by day. A trip round our neighbouring countries you will appreciate leadership at work. The question remains what are the responsibilities and obligations of mr president? Stop listing on letters let his works speaks for him action speaks louder than voice.
With all due respect, this submission of yours is SILLY. There are people moving about the web saying that the President has not done anything and instigating people against him; calling him "weak" and "clueless" about what to do and you actually expect that there should not be any response? Go through the webosphere, there are a flurry of write ups against the President based mostly on LIES, HALF-TRUTHS and outright PROPAGANDA in a form that no President has ever had to put up with; coupled with insults and in a few in stance HATE.

I may have a problem with the style of the OP and would not call those achievements yet in the actual sense, cos he(the President) still has about 3 years of his mandate to run, however, those people who peddle these lies present the situation as though the President has not only been ruling the country since Independence(so he is the cause of all the country's failings) but that his mandate is over(or should be over- that's why they usually call for resignation, impeachment etc) when apart from the unfortunate Security Challenges there is no president within at least the last 25 years have done(or rather doing) things that will transform this country as he has done in about 2 years, I repeat NONE. So expect that some people, who disagree with the methods used by these desperate Power Mongers, would remind others of what the President has done. To ask that those people should keep quiet is NAIVE, UNFAIR and honestly SILLY.

In any case when we debate this way we usually subject our assumptions to more scrutiny. For instance, you said Standard of Education have decreased and I wonder: compared to what and what your parameters were. While I agree that so much work needs to be done in the area of education going forward, I assert that using almost all parameters(no of students attending primary school, no of students staying in school, access to university education- with the building of 9 new universities in a year and licensing more universities, stability in the educational system- with the approval of the Teachers Salary Scale and Lecturers Salary/Retirement Age, the highest allocation of fund to the Education sector ever , even a slight increase in the pass rate in national exams etc etc ) this is not the correct assessment. Again , I am aware that many things still need to improve in this sector but it is relatively better and there is certainly no fall in the Standard of Education as you asserted(except you have your own parameters, which I would like you to share).

Similarly, you dismissed the improvements in Power supply as due to "Rainy season". But the question is- is this the only rainy season we have ever had? Do you know that the total installed capacity for Hydro plants in the country is about 1300MW and not all are been delivered of course; so lets assume that when the Dry season comes that the power supplied from Hydro sources will be half of its current level, still if you subtract this from the almost 4400MW available today it will still be significantly higher than the about 2800MW the President met(by the way, some of the units in these Hydro plants were refurbished by him). He has completed most of the IPP plants started by Obasanjo(halted by Yar'adua), and improved Transmission and Distribution facilities. The Gas facilities have also been markedly improved(this is actually the main reason for the improvements in Generation). Am also not sure you are really aware of the steps that have been taken so far in the Privatisation Programme by the government, most of which is essential for a liberalized Power Environment and which have been achieved during this admin: the formation of NERC board, formation of Bulk Trader, formation of the Asset Company, formation of the Gas Aggregator, unbudling of PHCN into 18 daughter companies, working out Power credits to intending investors in collaboration with some International Finance houses, Concessioning of the Transmission Company of Nigeria to a reputable International Energy utility company, formulation of a new investment learning Tariff Structure, Handling of Labour issues(though there are still some disagreements here) and of course the submission of bids strictly according to the time line. You just cant dismiss all these as due to "rainy season" and expect some of us that have been following the process to keep quiet.

Another wrong assumption is that this stance of some of us is due to Praise Singing. I do not Praise ANY human being. You will NEVER find that in any of my write ups. I have very high standards and know that much work still need to be done while acknowledging the "mess" we were in as a nation before now. However, as long as certain people have made it a duty to tell others that the President is not doing any thing and so distract people from really engaging the government's policies including constructively criticizing, it would be incumbent on some of us to counter these lies which will not do any of us any good. For instance, the only thing in the way of the full Liberalization of the Power Sector(which will be the most significant INFRASTRUCTURAL undertaking in the country's history) is the present disagreements between the "PHCN" workers an Government. In stead of Nigerians to put pressure on both the govt and labour that they should come to some kind of agreements and make it very clear to them that we will not accept any thing that will derail the process, some peple will nt allow 'see road' cos of their frivolous and unproductive criticisms.

Do you have any idea of the extent of

meticulous work been done in the

Power Sector not just in the marked

improvements in Generation,

Transmission and Distribution but

esp in the Privatization and

concessioning of the sector? Are you

aware of the effects the reforms,

which is currently in its concluding

stage(Sept/Oct this year), would

have on the nation? This admin is

midwifery the greatest

transformation in the Power Sector

in this country's history.

The nation is also undergoing its most

audacious developments in the

Transportation Sector- Rails, Inland

Waterways and Seaports. On rails,

the NRC that have been moribund for

very many years have been revived,

more workers re-engaged and most of

its dilapidated facilities across

the nation repaired; all the rail

tracks in the country are been

rehabilitated(actually most of the

tracks have been rehabilitated

already and some intra- and

interstate trains services have

started running after a very long time

in deed). The Standard Guage

Itakpe-Aladja-Warri rail track is

finally completed(with additions

planned) while the Modern Abuja-

completion) just as the Double track

Lagos-Ibadan Modern(which is

running trains) has been awarded

On Inland Waterways, the dredging of

the Lower Niger which links 9 states

on its axis and provide south-north

all year round navigation which

would ensure the cheap movements of

huge amounts of goods and humans,

has been completed with some

accompanying River Ports for the

first time in the country's history;

the dredging of River Benue has also

commenced.

The Seaports now work 24/7,

bureaucracy reduced and the amount of

time goods spend in the ports has

been halfed already(though not yet

up to the 48hrs target) while

Demorage costs have significantly

decreased(when was the last time you

heard of goods staying months on the

seas cos terrible congestions in the

pots and paying huge demorage).

Do you have any idea of the effects of

all theses on the economy going

forward especially as they are been

interconnected?(works on Roads need

to be accelerated though).

The most massive rehabilitation and

remodeling of airports across the

nation with about 11 of them is

ongoing; Kano International Airport

is for instance nearing completion.
