kingoflag: I was gonna give you the benefit of doubt until you said Yar Adua almost depleted the Treasury. SMH Why can't you guys be truthful for once? In less than 6 months that GEJ took power do you know how many Billions of Dollars magically grew wings and disappeared from State Coffers? Why do you think he decided to saddle you all with the debt by increasing the price of gasoline while he continues to live lavish swallowing $30,000/day meals?

Dude, NIGERIA IS BROKE! The sooner you realize that, the better.
Really you decided to cherry-pick just one claim in my post as a sort of excuse not to respond to every other claim I made. Have you forgotten that you were the one who made the claim about the economy performing poorly and I just responded. Be honest enough to respond to each point I raised.

By the way, I never said that Yar'adua depleted the Treasury but that he almost depleted the Foreign Reserves(I hope you know there is a difference between them). Amazing that you are arguing this: Obasanjo left about $62billion when he left the presidency in 2007 while as at December 2010 the reserve had decreased to about $32billion. I gave the main reason for this as the pressure the state governors placed on him(Yar'adua) to share the monies to other tiers(actually some other persons also criticized Obasanjo's savings insisting that the nation should not be saving when there was infrastructural deficiencies). To be fair to Yar'adua, the Global Economic Crisis and the insistence by the Central Bank Governor to defend the falling Naira against the advice of IMF with some of the Foreign Reserves may also have contributed. This continued for some time after GEJ took over but since then the Reserves have been increasing to about $37billion as at June 2012.

Now please do respond to every claim of mine in the post or I would assume that you agree with all of them. Thanks in advance:

agabaI23: Why are people trying to explain out Bakare's statement as if it was a bible passage? Was he speaking in parables?

I am one person who talk about mental poverty as the reason why our politicians loot the treasury. However, in this case, Bakare did not refer to mental poverty. He even (according to the article)buttressed his point by referring to GEJ's lack of shoes. People see the truth and tend to look away because it does not suit them. Not good!

Bakare was referring to physical poverty and wealth.
Because some persons have declared dis a WAR; it is a mata of Life and death and like they say, All is Fair in War...lies re d least of dier problems

Politics › Re: Our Olympic Performance, A Reflection Of The Nigerian Nation by taharqa: 3:20am On Aug 07, 2012
On this topic though I completely agree that our disgraceful performance in the Olympics reflects the SYSTEM we have in Nigeria. Our inability at times to organize ourselves and prepare effectively for events was glaring in the Olympics.

And cos I strongly believe in RESPONSIBILITY, those officials whose job it was to superintend a system that would provide effective preparation to our athletes(Various Sport Associations officials, NOC officials, Sports Commission officials including the Minister and ultimately of course, the President) should share some responsibility for our less than impressive performance before the world.

We should however not be content in just 'blaming' people but should focus our attention in the Sports Commission and demand that a better system should be evolved and managed in other to avoid this scenario again
Politics › Re: Our Olympic Performance, A Reflection Of The Nigerian Nation by taharqa: 2:44am On Aug 07, 2012
afam4eva: The OP didn't blame the athletes, rather he's putting the blame on the country in general. We can't deny the fact that just about everything in this country is crumbling and sport seems to be the last casualty. It's unfortunate that people like you will keep peddling the old long lie that everything is ok. I pity this country.
You see this is what I dont understand. How is 'everything in this country..crumbling'? I mean apart from the security situation(which granted has deteriorated, though which is mostly orchestrated by some political interests) and most of you guys shouting this, how is the 'everything' crumbling? Do any of you guys understand what a 'System' entailed? Were we any better than we are now?

I just tried to respond to a poster in another thread who claimed that 'any right thinking person with knowledge and foresight knows that the chances of your country avoiding economic disaster between now and 2015, under GEJ's stewardship, is nil', implying the the economic trend in the last 2 years have been terrible so the trend is expected to worsen until 2015, but the economic data completely refutes this. So where do you people get these your info that is so confidently asserted?

kingoflag: Beacause, the health of Nigeria has failed so drastically under the illiterate Professor Y'all have in power right now that any right thinking person with knowledge and foresight knows that the chances of your country avoiding economic disaster between now and 2015, under GEJ's stewardship, is nil.

See that is the thing I dont understand. What economic trend since he became president suggests that there will be 'economic disaster between now and 2015', plz list them. Are you are aware that the GDP growth rate last year was 7.69%(one of the highest in the world); that in spite of the security challenges Nigeria was the highest recipient of FDI in Africa last year of about $8billion; that the Foreign reserves, after Yar'adua under intense pressure from state governors almost depleted it,has started to increase again(it increased from about $32billion to $37billion from December last year to June this year)-also the establishment of the Sovereign Wealth Fund finally above the strong opposition of the governors again should be noted; this year the nation revenue agencies have largely meant or in some instances surpassed their targets and just last week cos of the new security measures against oil theft in the Niger Delta, the NNPC Boss announced that we now pump about 2.7million barrels per day of crude and condensates whose sales would start months from now as usual(which was due to the much publicized directive by the president to the security agencies to clamp down on organized thieves who steal Nigeria's oil- a comment that some ppl here as usual then ridiculed); on the budget, i dont know if u know dat last yr's budget was implemented at 83% as at 31st March 2012(they extended it by 3months) which is nt only by far d highest since 1999 but almost doubles d average rates(40-50%) 4 dose yrs, while dis yr is already at 56%; and finally the Stock Exchange Index has improved compared same period last year. So where is this economic glum that some of you talk about. The only index that has gone somewhat negative is the Debt Position, and really essentially the local Debt( I am personally weary of debts so I join in any criticisms on govt to have a PLAN to guide its debt policy, though I note that all nations take debts, in fact some economists will tell you that it is necessary esp from the Bond market- am not so sure about that though). Of course that is the problem of distribution of this growth to Nigerians, which is a different discourse and which any ways takes some time.

I noticed that a poster made the claim that GEJ 'has not done anything' since he became president, and when someone else listed some things he admitted he does live in the country!! Well here are some of the things that was not even listed: the Nigerian Railway Corporation(NRC)that has been moribund for more than 15 years has been completely turned around- thousands of new workers engaged, offices reconstructed, way stations and workshops retooled, old couches repaired and new one bought- all these are now bearing fruit such that for the 1st time in many years the trains are running some interstate routes(the Lagos-Ilorin tract has been running for some time now while the Lagos-Kano extension has been completed and trains would have started running south-north this week but for a new problem with a bridge, hopely full services will start before the end of this month; the PortHarcourt-Maiduguri railway is been reconstructed as we speak and is expected to start running befor the end of the year ). The contracts for the modern railways has been given and while I hear some work has started on the Abuja-Kaduna Sector, I honestly do not know the current status though it usually takes a minimum of 2 years to complete.
The Dredging of the River Niger has been completed, while some River Ports like Onitsha port has also been completed. There is also massive reconstructions of some of the nations airports(11 of them)going on which all air travelers must have notice. Some roads and bridges like the Third Mainland bridge, Jebba Brigde, Auchi-Okene Washout, Benin-Ore-Shagamu, Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Kano-Maiduguri, Onitsha-Enugu etc are currently been worked on.
It may also be useful to acquit yourself of the very interesting reforms the current Minister of Agriculture is presently doing in the critical Agricultural sector.
But for me the most significant thing that this govt is currently doing is in the Power Sector. Am not even talking about the general improvements many persons have reported in power supply for some time now(I hope it is not temporary) but the fact that the govt of Nigeria is amazingly finally following its own Power Reform Program that will lead to the privatization of the sector religiously and in a concrete way with clear timelines. The effect of this if seen to its end(and I cannot believe am saying this for a Nigerian govt- it is VERY likely they would this time) would be better imagined: https://www.nairaland.com/1004060/something-wrong-power-improving/13#11639505

Now are all these perfect? NO. But considering the circumstances- the DISTURBANCE from the day he was sworn by many determined forces(the orchestrated Violence, spiteful criticisms and insults) whose intention has always been to remove him his government, me thinks he has done close to his best for now. Importantly, it puts paid to LIES of those who say that he has not done ANYTHING since he became President or that he is the worst President in the history of Nigeria. This last assertion is ridiculous cos apart from Security issues(which I will talk about soon), it will be very interesting for anyone to compare any of the 1st 2 years of Nigeria's past leaders in the past 20 years with that of GEJ. The comparison is especially funny cos most of the issues that he is presented faced with was caused by these past leaders.

On Security, Yes I understand how Nigerians can be angry at the current situation as we were not used at all to terrorist activities going on. However, we should not forget that we are dealing with a group of terrorists bent on pushing their wrasp ideologies on the rest of us, and whose insurgency are actually partly orchestrated by some political interests who want to get back power by all means. The game being to create an environment of a sense of insecurity for the president (ie best way to make the country ungovernable as promised)and then accuse the him of incompetence('clueless' as they now shout around) and then when he tries to concentrate in solving the problem, turn around and accuse him of focusing too much on security. The president and the Security Services I want to belief are doing all they can to deal with this situation, we should help our President and reject the Narrative of the extremists(Religious and Political)?

I HOPE THAT ANYONE WHO DISAGREES WITH THE ABOVE WOULD BE HONEST ENOUGH TO DEBATE ANY OF THE POINTS(AND THEY ARE MANY SO SHOULD BE EASIER TO DEBUNK). SILENCE OR ABUSIVE DISMISSALS WOULD SUGGEST NOT ONLY THAT THE CLAIMS ARE NOT INVALID BUT CALL TO QUESTION THE CLAIMS BY SOME PERSONS THAT NOTHING IS BEEN DONE. Thanks.

Go through my old posts (You know this anyways, except you wanna play dummy as usual) and you will see that I've been pushing the GEJ angle forever!

Anyone that has ever smelt the corridors of Intel Gathering knows theres no doubt GEJ had a hand in the initial bombings just to scare and Divide the Polity into thinking he was the Messiah needed for peace to reign, while simultaneously alienating the North whom everyone was already sick and tired of because of their ineptitude which they showed for 50years+.

GEJ really thought after using their bomb expertise to win elections he was going to sideline them and cut them out of the war booty?! I know what is going on, You know what is going on, GEJ knows what is going on, anyone that knows the workings of Govt knows what is going on: GEJ HAD A HAND IN THE EARLY BOMBINGS!

So, don't come here trying to sell white to me as black. Your GEJ is evil, devilish, and manipulative and has nothing but misery to give to Nigerians.

Let me give you all another Prediction:

GEJ WILL IMPROVE/STABILIZE ELECTRICITY IN NIGERIA, THEN HE'LL THINK HE DESERVES TO RULE FOREVER. NIGERIANS ARE VERY DOCILE AND WILL ALLOW THIS. If they haven't pushed him out by now (considering all his sins), they won't ever push him out especially when he gives them something as simple as electricity.

GEJ WILL GIVE YOU ALL ELECTRICITY, HE WILL RUN FOR RE-ELECTION, HE WILL WIN! THEN, IN 2018 (or thereabouts) HE WILL PUSH FOR A SINGLE TERM TENURE OF 7YRS AND HE'LL GET IT! By then, Nigeria will be no different from Somalia, only with 18hr electricity and a bigger economy, but with an astronomically high amount of unemployed and hungry people. By then, those fighting the battles today will be weary, and those coming up won't fight because GEJ is all they're used to, so they won't even understand what the fuss is all about. GEJ has learned good . . . .REAL GOOD. . . from Paul Biya and Yoweri Musevini. Remember, these are two of the world's most notorious dictators, but these are the same men GEJ visited immediately after becoming President. Within his First 3 weeks as President, the first bill GEJ suggested presenting to the National Assembly (on returning from visiting the two Dictators) was a Bill that'll give him an additional 7yrs in Power ---- THE SAME EXACT TRICK THOSE TWO DICTATORS USED TO ENSLAVE THEIR PEOPLE AND ENSURE A STAY IN POWER FOREVER! GEJ is on the same road.

GEJ will never give up the Presidency easily because he knows he most likely will be the first Nigerian Ex-President to be jailed for offenses he committed while in office; he will do anything to stay there forever! He knows he's not IBB or OBJ and that beyond Otuekpe (or wherever he's from) he has no influence. . . .

Some of us see far ahead. . . Theres a reason The U.S writes your policies and tells you how your future will shape out. But, of course, you're too daft to comprehend.

I honestly feel sad for Nigerians.
When you start hearing this kind of thrash, u know dat d intense and bizarre criticisms of GEJ by certain persons has nothing to do with any regards for the good of Nigeria but a FEAR that d man may actuali do well, nd so possibly win anoda term in 2015- thereby preventing their candidate(who is already old) from being president. Politics › Re: Something Is Wrong; Power Is Improving by taharqa:
Power is actually improving at least I can attest to that. In Benin City for instance, people hardly use generators much as one now expects Power for at least 20hrs a day; and this has generally been the case since the middle of last year except for a period of time early this year when there was a general problem with electricity nationally. While one would still want to be cautiously optimist about this new improved situation cos this has happened before yet we went back to the old 'no light' situation later, it seem there really are NOW signs that perhaps this improvement is for real. There definitely is a better organized and focused Power Ministry that seem to be alive to its work and a Minister who has finally resolved to deal with many of the saboteurs we have in the system. For instance, the reaction to the dip in Power generation and distribution we experienced early this year was followed by the swift sack of the heads of TCN who the Minister accused of sabotage(since then there have been improvements). There also seem to have been improved Distribution and Transmission facilities than we had before such the end-users are getting much better power than the smaller increase in Generation would suggest.
SOURCE: http://www.informationnigeria.org/2012/04/govt-fires-phcn-chiefs-over-outage.html

The really significant thing for me though is that the Power Reform Process seem to been going according to plan this time around and it seem very likely now that we would see the end of the Privatization Process before the end of October. Below is a sketch of some of the steps already taken 1. The passage of d Power Reform Bill some years ago(which laid the legal framework for the actors in the Power Sector) 2. The unbundling of PHCN into 18 holding companies last year. 3. The start of d new investment-leaning Tariff Structure this July(This honestly was the first REAL sign for me that the government was now serious in privatizing the sector). 4. The almost complete conclusion of the termination process of the current 'PHCN' workers prior to their selective re-absorption by the proposed new owners( though there seem to be some problems with the workers' Pensions at the moment). 5. The take-over of the Transmission Company by a well-known international company(MHI) so as to reorganized and manage it before handing it back to the govt(PS: Probably so that there will be less saboteurs in the system going forward, the minister insisted that MHI bring 8 senior staff who will take over the management of the company while current Nigerian management staff act as their assistants for the 3-year period) 6. The close of the submission of d bidding process for sale of d 17 Generation holding companies two weeks ago. 7. And just yesterday, the close of the submission of bids for the Distribution companies, again on schedule.

Just yesterday the govt insisted that the time-line WILL be followed(as they seem to have been doing) and have re-started the important dates again:

"Briefing newsmen at the end of the NCP meeting on Monday, the Director General for Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE), Ms Bolanle Onagorowa, said that the July 31 deadline for the submission of the bids for the Distribution Company of the PHCN remained sacrosanct as the Council vowed to strictly adhere to its timeline on the exercise...BPE boss also stated that the Council would meet on August 24 to reveal the bidders that passed the technical evaluation for the Generation companies’ bidders. She also disclosed that the Council would meet on September 11 to reveal the list of bidders that passed technical evaluation for the Distribution Companies.
Onagoruwa also stated that the financial bids opening for the Generation companies will be on September 25, while financial bid opening for the Distribution companies will be on October, 8. She also added that the Council would give final approval for the commercial bids for Distribution Companies on October, 22.

One can imagine what will happen if this process concludes and Power generation and Distribution is privatized. It is also great that States have finally been granted approvals to distribute the Power it generates directly to its citizens- this is not just great news for states like Rivers, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom but will hopefully also create some sought of competition amongst other states who would then be 'blackmailed' into generating Power for their own people(either solely or more likely in conjunction with Private Investors).

IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT THIS PROCESS IS SEEN TO ITS LOGICAL CONCLUSION AS THIS MAY BE THE MOST IMPORTANT PROCESS THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT HAVE EVER TAKEN , AND IT IS HAPPENING BEFORE OUR VERY EYES. We should not forget these dates(August24, September 11, September 25, October 8, October 22) and should insist that they are followed through please. This is where we need the Critics the most.

Rest IN PEACE "General Sani Abacha Sir"
Yea why wud u nt hail Gen Sani Abacha, afta all he was a northana nd dat is wot really counts 4 sm of u. You hv been one of d persons shouting on this forum and telling us hw extremely corrupt d present govt nd leadas are but dat apparently excludes Abacha. Should i b surprisd?didnt Gen Buhari say only a few yrs ago dat Gen Abacha was not corrupt?d same Abacha 4rm whose Foreign Accounts d FG hv so far repatriatd bout $2 billion 4rm nd whose son is presently undagoin trials in Switzerland relating to corruptn during his reign(PS: Gen Abacha was he who appointd Buhari as head of PTF nd one of his sons been d CPC governorship candidate 4 Kano State in d last 2011 elections!!!). The same ppl who evidently see Gen Abacha as a Hero re d ones who suddenly became internet activists immediately afta d last 2011 elections... That some ppl still do not see tru all dese Shenanigans as a group of ppl determind to get Power back by any means, even if d nation self destructs in d process, is astonishing. I have always wantd these sets of elites ruling us out but i will not give my support to a group whose main aim is Power (Re)acquisition.

Kobojunkie: I think I am clear in what I said.

In 2011, the total spent on subsidy, according to Okonjo-Iweala, was in the ballpark of Naira 1.3 Trillion. However, according to the same woman, by June of 2011, the Nation had already exhausted the Naira 888 Billion allocated for subsidy for this year( that's in about 5 months). And all this during the same time this same Government has continually claimed that it has been working hard at CLOSING UP ALL HOLES to stop the thieves from continuing to loot the system. So, you tell me . . on the way to solving corruption by removing subsidy, right?
For God's sake i was talking bout d TOTAL REMOVAL of d subsidy dat GEJ always wantd to do even b4 d electn.re u actuali saying dat if d subsidy was totali removed, there wud still hv bn d 'govt' monies to steal?will d private sector, who wud actuali be in full charge of importatn nd sales, be stealing dier own monies?....d significance of dis point was dat if d president was d chief proponent of d TOTAL removal of subsidy 4rm d very start of his presidency well b4 d electn, nd actuali went ahead to put d goodwill he was enjoyin den nd in sm ways his presidency ON THE LINE to remove d subsidy months into his term over huge opposition(includin myself), how can an argument b nw made dat he was d chief beneficiary of subsidy- esp nw dat he has startd to prosecute d subsidy 'thief'huh?

Demdem it is such a shame wen an 'educatd' person crudely nd directly distorts d words of odas(or endorse such) in oda to achieve an agenda.i nw regard u as such a person. 4 d avoidance of doubt lets go tru d statement again bt removing d word dat Saharan Reporters insertd: 'it is Not (also) dat d president is making error that requires impeachment' is not d same tin as saying 'it is (also) dat d president is making error that requires impeachment'- these 2 statements re a complete opposite of each oda. This is such a SHAME really. Except dat there are oda statements nt capturd in dis article den dis is one of d worst direct distortns i hv seen in a long time(which is odd cos I study d interplay of Information, Power and Identity). Saharan Reporters is mking itself even worse dan Foxx News nd d NTA..d ppl also doin all dese fail to realise dat they actuali push ppl away towards trying to undastad GEJ(even sm of his former harshest critics like myself). wen an interest decides to consistently employ halftruths, lies nd distortns to pursue an end den dat is a sign dat end is very likely d wrong one
