The argument is not about use of surname as in modern times. The argument is about the possibility of claiming descent from a non relative. Like Mary is a direct descendant of Judah (the Tribe of David) and therefore cannot be a direct descendant of Levi (the Tribe of Miriam, Moses and Aaron)
