It is often claimed the the religious that a belief in God would result in the believer being BLESSED by their God. In fact, in evangelical crusades and in some churches, this messages could not be spoken loudly enough. I have never quite understood what these blessing are. Are they material or spiritual progress? What are the blessings promised to believers?

Does anyone speak in tongues here?

Am afraid, this hypnotism is happening all through Africa (if not the world) with the spread of evangelism. We are breeding a generation of people who would rather be indoctrinated than think.

We in Africa stand at the crossroad of modernity and barbarism. Religions is the gatekeeper to the door to barbarism, while scientific rationalism looks after modernity.

What is the place of religion in a modern society? Should religions and religious views be automatically be accorded pride of place and respect? Should all religions be subject to rigorous intellectual scrutiny or should society just accept anything that passes for a religious idea?

One might submit that anything that is formulated by humans is fraught with error and due to failure because humans, de facto, are imperfect, themselves.

If that should be the case, then would not organized religion fall into the same category? Surely, it, too, would be flawed, would it not?

My experience of the critics of evolution on this forum is that they are seldom prepared to review or study the material they are referred to. This is a disgrace. It is incalculable how religious dogma addles the mind.

What the the main doctrinal differences between the various Christian denominations; Presbytarians, Baptists, Calvinist, Anglican, Methodist, Catholics, Apostolic, evangelicans etc, etc, etc?

Why is there little unity in the Christ movement, with almost each new fashion generating a new christian movement. Today, there are in excess of 30000 different movements under the umbrella of Christianity. Do any of these movements preserve the essence of the Jesus teaching of the 1st century?

I wonder whether you know what Einstein's religions was? You would be surprised !!!!

My prime source is the bible itself. The controvery is clearly reported in sections of the bible by the two main protagonists themselves. I remember how this troubled me as a kid and how none of the elders of the churches I attended to satisfactorily answer the questions for me. It was not until I read widely on the subjects did it all begin to make sense. If you really are interested, you could check the following sources;

I'm quite new to the religion section here that was why I posted under this topic. I actually thot I was passing knowledge across to a brother who had tins mixed up and not entering a debate about xtianity & the great religion. Nwando & 4Him's posts tell me that this debate has long been going on.

One intruiging question though, why is it that you guys are quick to kill in the name of religion? You hound, maim & kill anyone of a contrary opinion to your ideas. There is so much blood-letting if anyone so much as mentions the name of your prophet yet you talk anyhow about Jesus Christ and xtians just smile and say Father forgive them for they know not wot they say! You prevent people from even talking freely about Jesus to your people & try to build an impregnable wall round them!
This seems to me as if there is something u guys are hiding, not for much longer though; Jesus said "You shall know the truth & the truth shall make u free".
I dare any nation to open up & declare freedom for people to preach woteva they believe, believe me, nothing will remain of the religions that holds people by force in that nation!

Any progressive "philosophy" abandons barbarity as it advances. Christianity made a step change from Judaism by abandoning some of the cruel and barbaric elements of the Judaic faith. But its doctrine of hell is still repugnant. Is-lam is still set in the dark ages and its about time it underwent some reforms.

The government of Turkey is doing the right thing is pushing forward the idea of the reformation of the islami-c religion. Hope they drop this notion of the fatwa.

Many a times I have been watching a tele-evangelist on TV as they suddenly burst into a long soliloguys of incomprehensible babbling, uttering words that do not sound as possessing the structure and syntax of a recognisable language. I am told that is is called "speaking in tongues" and is a gift from the holy spirit. I am also told that what is being uttered is actually sometimes recognised as a language of some foreign parts of which the speaker would have had no familiarity.

Can someone pour some light on this "speaking in tongues" palaver? Has anyone ever recognised the language in the mouth of the speaker-in-tongue?

Is there any country that is the paragon of Sharia in the world?

A good deal of the epistles of Paul are his authentic work, but there are others that cannot so be claimed. This is a major area of research amongst NT scholars. What is agreed by the NT scholarly community is that some Paul epistles clearly have a Gnostic feel to them. Check out the book Gnostic Paul by Elaine Pagel on Amazon to get a feel.

It is believed that later scribes interpolated Paul's epistles and this may acount for the variance we see in some places, one of which is the Road to Damascus episode.

Was this meant to prohibit exercising evaluative practices on the behaviour of others? - No, we see plenty of examples in the new testament of the apostles constructively criticising each other.

Was this a prohibition on judicial practices? - No, the same Jesus Christ said . . . give unto Ceaser the things that are Ceasers. The bible also enjoins us to respect constituted government authority which includes the judiciary.
Paul and co were brought before magistrates, they dutifully complied.

So in what sense are these verses to be understood?

No one has really tackled the issues I raised in this post; And these are:

1) Was Jesus really a strict follower of the Judaic laws on diet, cleanliness, sabbath etc?

2) Did Paul really "know" Jesus and did he preach Jesus's message?

3) Is the version of Christianity that survived (ie Pauline) in keeping with Jesus's teachings, which would have been better known and understood by the Jerusalem gang (ie the Jamesians)?

What is very little appreciated by the majority of mainstream Christians today is that there are at least two schools of Christianity coursing through the New Testament. For simplicity, I shall call these the Jamesian doctrine, led by James, the brother of Jesus and the Pauline doctrine whose exponent was Paul of the road to Damascus fame.

This is evident from the acrimony between the two leaders of their respective doctrine, as clearly reported in several passages in the bible, with the one showing contempt for the other. According to the NT, James was the brother of Jesus and would have had direct personal contact with Jesus on a daily basis during Jesus's ministry. He would have been familiar with Jesus dietary preferences, his hygeine habits, genital surgery options, his satorial choices and not least his doctrinal biases. As Jews, James, like Jesus, would have observed the core jewish laws; dietary, hygiene, sabbath etc;  In fact, in Matthew 5, Jesus is seen emphasing the importance of the law. Correspondingly in James epistle, James is seen to endorse the justification by law doctrine, in keeping with the spirit of Jesus's message. Who do you think would have had better knowledge of Jesus - someone who spent time with him in the flesh or someone who never met him in the flesh?

Then, Paul comes along and turns the applecart. Paul, who confesses to never having met Jesus, starts to preach a totally different message. For this he runs into conflict with the core Jerusalem gang, a conflict he reports in Galatians.  He now preaches a doctrine of justification not by law but by faith. Consequently, he relaxes all the jewish laws, which would have been essential to the Jesus and James movement. He reports that he is given the mandate to preach his version of Christianity to the gentiles, while the Jerusalem gang would preach to the Jews.  As luck would have it, he makes rather more converts to his message than the old school missionaries.  Eventually, Pauline Christianity wins the day, while Jamesian Christianity (the version know to Jesus) would died slowly.  If Jesus had return in 300 CE, he would most certainly not have recognised the movement he founded. At this point the Christian cult had already split into various factions; Marcionism, Nestorianism, Docetism, Appollinarism, Arianism and Catholicism.  Most of these were called collectively as the Gnostics and had their own version of the gospels as well as other writings.

Still less would he recognise the present day Christian community as portraying and practicing the words he taught. Christianity has had two millenia to shape and reshape its teaching to the extend that various groups called themselve Christian today essentially for historic reason than for theological ones. So if you are an orthodox Christian today, chances are good that you are a Pauline Christian, a far cry from the Christianity of Jesus.

Judge not so that Ye be not Judged!  This notion is expressed by Jesus in two passages in the NT; Luke 6: 37 and Matt 7: 1-2

Luke 6: 37
37"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Matt 7: 1-2

1"Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

In what sense is the word judge used in these passages? Was this meant to prohibit exercising evaluative practices on the behaviour of others. Was this a prohibition on judicial practices?

Wonderful question! Although I must admit that I find it interesting that you ask whether science is erosive to religion and not whether religion is erosive to science (or, for that matter, whether each is erosive to the other).
Anyway, I personally feel that they are complimentary. Some might suggest that there exists a synergistic relationship between the two, but I'm not sure I'm yet prepared to go quite that far!

Please allow me to respectfully point out what appears to be a slight misunderstanding regarding evolution. Evolution does not suggest that man evolved from apes, but rather, it suggests that various life forms share common ancestries. Also, it makes a case not for the survival of the strongest, but rather the survival of the fittest, i.e., those who are most suited (or best adapted) to a given set of circumstances in a given environment.

Would be interesting to see example of area of how they compliment each other!

It must have come in some moments of ecstasy when you feel so elated and anything becomes possible. It shows the lack of details and sensitivity to a high degree and leaves room for doubts of the words of the affected MOG. I can't help but wonder why he said it - to draw people to his ministry, perhaps. Now they are there, they are hooked. How crafty these people are.
