Ok, thanks for the offer
I will like to accept it
Especially as I am not sure of getting anything credible right away
As for generator, we had a close shave once
I was woken up on night by my neighbour's wife scream for help
Their generator caught fire and it was a nigtmare
I don't really like them
I am leaving the office now because of traffic
Will respond later
And will put up my email add then

Actually, I am a do-it-yourself-er. I know BP Solar sells, and will be in lagos in 6 months or so. Apart from that, no clue. but one can purchase and install on own.

I heard about Nanosolar as well . . . and hoping to get updates on their products too. However other companies have worked hard to bring the cost of solar panels down to some reasonable costs. If one were to invest about N350,000 in Solar, for a typical home in Nigeria, that is more than enough electricity to power the home( Refrigerator, TV, Computer, Lights, Radio, Fans Or mini Airconditioning system). I mean Solar makes more sense for anyone living in NIgeria right now. Pollution free, and you can have it high on your roof, away from thiefs, and you do not have to run in and out to turn it on and off and all that. And After the initial investment, you won't need to invest a whole lot more for at least the initial first 10 years, from what I have read on the life of many out there now.
That is great
Do you know any credible vendor in Nigeria
One that will deliver a good job and at the same time enable me save some Naira (sorry kobo, LOL)

Fear not, the solution to that problem has been available for a while now. it is called Solar power. If you spent just $1000 on Solar( it is cheaper now compared to yesteryears) you will be rid of pollution, trips to get fuel, and need to turn generators off and on. Solar does not need your care 24/7.
Please educate me
My understanding has always been that the cost of providing solar power for even a single family requires significant initial outlay
has this changed?
I once heard of a company - nanosolar - that made a breakthrough in the technology
But was told that it won't be available to households for year

^^^ Very Good analysis.

But I dont think many people here believe Jonathan has solved all the power problems.

People are only acknowledging the improvements they have seen.

anyone who believes Jonathan will solve all the power problem in a year is only dreaming.

what I think majority appreciate is the commitment he is putting into it and like he said we should be able to measure the progress.
I agree with this - commitment and focus
I would love to be rid of generators, trips to buy fuel (and having to tip/bribe the attendants)
I would love to be rid of the genrator noise which can be unbearable, the pollution and most importantly
I would love that Nigeria ceases to be an object of ridiculed where people periodically die of inhallation of generators exhaust fume
May God help our country

Hi folks, i know we are all so anxious has to see an improvement of power in all our locality, but lets face the fact of the saying "ROME WASN'T BUILT IN A DAY". In my area we used to have light for 6hrs a day, but since Goodluck came in a head over PHCN it has improved to btw 14-16hrs everyday. I know this might not go well with some people but believe me you have a role to play in this. For example, some people haven't had light in days because their transformer is faulty, do you expect Goodluck to come to your area? Well that would be impossible, he still has a greater assignment as to generating and channeling power adequately. So if you want to enjoy power start now to protect that transformer in neighbourhood cause it could be the hindrance to light for you.
Your excellency keep up the good work and please leave every other thing and concentrate on power. Nigeria's well vote for you.
Then why should I then believe that Johnathan actually built Rome in a day!
So when did Johnathan come in? 2 months ago as Ag President? or 5 months since Yaradua took ill?
And he achieved all these in 5 months?

And like we know, Johnathan was the chairman of a committee set up by Yaradua to actualise Yaradua's promise of 6,000MW by Dec 2009
Now this is April 2010
And according to PHCN, they are targetting 4,000MW in April
http://www.punchontheweb.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art20100426343764

And nobody ever told me before now (under Obj and Yaradua) that power problem was due to my transformer's problems
but since this "miracle" was wrought (within 2 - 5 months), it is now over to my transformer!

I don't need to protect my transformer
I only need to protect my mind from being assailed by the notion that ANYBODY can transform power situation in 6months
And indeed to be fair to Jonathan, he told CNN that electoral reforms can be delivered in 6 months
but NOT infrastructural transformation which will take a longer time

Please listen to the interview again
If you convince Johnathan of his miracle, then perhaps I will be convinced and will "like" what you are saying

See excerpts below
http://thewillnigeria.com/breaking/4181-Transcript-Jonathans-Interview-With-CNNs-Amanpour.html

"AMANPOUR: You've got 12 months, essentially, to enact the reforms you're talking about, bringing about the changes, whether it's to election law, whether it's to the issue of peace. How much do you really think you can achieve in this short period of time?

JONATHAN: We'll do our best. Some of this (inaudible) human issues that you can achieve significantly, like we talk about electoral reforms and conducting clean elections. We don't need 100 years to do that. We don't even need a year to do that, because they're human factors (ph). And a few months, we should be able to set up a system that can conduct free and fair elections. But all that is like basic infrastructure that needs a period that -- that you conceptualize it, you figure out the design, you figure the planning, environmental assessment, and so on before you the physical execution of the projects. Those ones will take some time.

But still, people will see that you've set up a clear roadmap. If you think the most challenging infrastructure that we have, the power infrastructure, the electric power infrastructure, we must set up a clear agenda that people will know that we are moving forward and we have milestones that we can benchmark you.

Definitely a government that -- we have 12 months, and especially -- especially it's an election period. Immediately after elections, government’s activities tend to slow down because of, of course, they are key positions that are in government.

So we have that kind of a challenge. We don't really even have 12 months. We can't even claim to have 5 months. But what we promise is that within the shortest possible time, we take (inaudible) cannot take everything. We take the things that we believe we can leave some footprints, but most importantly for Nigerians to see that we are -- we are serious and we are committed.

Yes sir indeed, Mr. Goldman, the sudden availability of electrical power in Nigeria, after 30 years of continuous darkness, is cause for great celebration, and for giving credit where it is due, namely to the man of the hour, President Jonathan Goodluck.

Before sneering down your nose from India, of all places, where rats, monkeys and cows are worshipped like gods, and where dedicated vehicles pick up scores of the destitute who died of hunger throughout Mumbai every morning,  may I remind you that power outages are routine everywhere in that horribly overpopulated country, your blatant lie here notwithstanding.

Of course, Nigerian newspapers have a near "death-wish" about terrorism

Kobojunkie at it again  grin

what gives ?

I wonder when you all will clamour for all our past leaders get probed regardless of whether such is Donald Duke or IBB  undecided

The truth is; no serious governor will allow himself get entrapped into getting distracted by detractors with political motives . . .

In this case, Tinubu is the Godfather that is not happy Alpha beta aint getting 3billion naira monthly off Lagos from IGR . . .

his anchor men are Ikuforiji in the LAHA, being deceived and led on with the promise that he will be made next governor representing the legislature to disparage BRF's efforts . . .

2nd main man in the exco is Muiz Banire that is being touted as a Replacement for BRF in the next elections, representing the dissidents in the Exco . . .followed by shameless thieving touts like Afikuyomi. . . .

funny enuff, people dont know that Agbaje is being romanced just to unsettle BRF . . .

YET BRF NO DEY SHAKE  . . . . tongue
I still do not agree
The governor who campaigned for our votes
And who got our votes
Has been accused of wrongdoing
I remember watching the debate among the candidates on Channels as part of the campaign
At a point Fashola was asked to look at the camera and promise to be answerable to Lagosians
And he did make that promise
So he should answer to us
The above are facts

If he has any problems with Tinubu
Let him sort that out

What I am reading
Like
"Tinubu is not getting money
He is not being settled"
Agbaje, Ikuforiji are being wooed" etc
have not been proved - they are not facts
They are irrelevant

By the way - it cannot be correct that Tinubu did not do anything
Adeola Odeku road, Yaba - Lawanson, Awolowo Road, Oregun Road, Lagos Island, BRT
Are those projects known to me personally
people mention the road at Igando; I have not seen it
Poeple talk about "Jigi Bola", LASU Teaching hospital;
I have not been there

Could Tinubu have done more?
Certainly
Is he corrupt?
I believe that everybody holding or who has held an elective position is corrupted in the process
Just like a biological mother cannot claim to be a virgin (forget the inconsequential exceptions)

So my point
Let Fashola answer to the electorate
and sort out Tinubu how he wants

If I am prosecuted for not paying tax in Lagos, the government will not allow me to argue that
others did not pay tax some years back and went scot free
So if Lagos state will not buy the argument from me, why should people plead it on the governor's behalf
It is actually a disservice to him

Sanusi Maijama, the president of the The Nigerian Association of Small-Scale Industrialists (NASSI) was on AIT recently, bitterly complaining about how Sanusi is killing off the small scale sector industrial in Nigeria with his agbero tactics. I wonder if it's just that Sanusi (being a mere bush man) does not see the leveling of industry in the name of "risk management" to be a concern, but Gusau, the National Security Adviser, very rightly does? Was Sanusi Maijama imagining things, when he basically called for Jonathan to wash Sanusi away?

Sanusi is just a bush man flailing for breath in a job that is beyong his marabout talents. Whereas, the National Security Adviser is a wily intelligence man of World renown. . . two poles apart.

While the argument rages, can someone prepare marshal music and a firing squad at bar beach? Let's fulfill one of Sanusi's dreams. grin
Sanusi answered this charge on Channels TV recently. In attendance were the Editorial Board Chairman of Business day Ogho Okiti (Phd Ecn) and another economist - Boyo - who had always criticised Sanusis.
At the end of the day, Sanusi appeared to have won them over

Sanusi produced statistics to show that banks were not even lending to SMEs before the crunch
How much of their SMEIES fund did they lend before the crisis? - pretty little
He says that is why CBN is coming up with targeted facilities to SMEs

Sanusi is not a saint
However he is more believable than Gusau
Being a politician, Gusau is more likely to play politics than Sanusi
Note that Gusau was the only person who did not withdraw his candidacy at PDP convention that would have
made a Yaradua a full consus candiate of the PDP

CBN controls monetary policy which delivers financial stability
With stability, fiscal policy can operate and grow the economy

people come to nairaland for different agendas. The only problem is with those who can not see through. As a result, they join the bandwagon.
People have different deities that they worship

Some worship Obj
Some worship Fashola (I voted for him and will again after the probe)
Some people who never noticed Johnathan are now worshipping him

However, I would have expected that most people will tell the truth

Now 2 facts

(1) Shortly after Obj assumed office in 1999, the power situation improved dramatically
Bola Ige was power Minister then
I remember the then MD of First Bank thanking Bola Ige for the improvement in power supply
Obj hilself was congratulated on it by a caller on one of his TV session - "The President explains"
Als, it was a short lived euphoria
The rains were heavy that year and it even caused fooding at Kanji
By January 2000, we knew the truth

(2) Yaradua constituted a committee to spearhead achievement of 6,000MW by Dec 2009
The chairman of the committee was then VP - Good luck Johnathan
So if his committee could not deliver it by Dec 2009
and we are seeing the effects of some actions taken then
why should we call him a miracle man

Let us not be deceived
When Johnathan came into office as Acting President, he knew enough about the power sector
to start implementing those recommendations (if any) that his committee made to Yaradua and which (if that is the case) Yaradua did not accept

However, no matter the recommendations or actions, since taken
to tell me that in April, we have the type of constant power supply mentioned by the original poster is a disservice to ourselves
I live in Lagos, there is no day that people don't prove that "I better pass my neigbour"
Go to filling stations and check if people do not continue to buy fuel into Jerry cans
Just ask any welder that you know, how the power situation is
and the most ubiquitous - visit a barbing saloon

My point is that what work did Johnathan's committe do?
I cannot say, but I have not seen any miracle
afterall, we have seen this type of miracle before

If this country is to move forward, we need to be more circumspect about the things

And we should remember: Deziani wept; Deziani did not perform
PoliticsHow Delta State Helped Ibori's Ascot To Acquire Wilbros by truly(op): 7:55am On Apr 18, 2010
Willbros: How Delta Bailed Out Ascot
By Olawale Olaleye, 04.18.2010

More facts emerged yesterday on how the Delta State government under former governor James Ibori, bailed out Ascot Offshore Nigeria Limited, an oil servicing conglomerate operating in West Africa in the purchase of Willbros group, an American-based company in 2006.
Coming against insinuations that Delta State may have diverted state funds to acquire Ascot for the purchase of Willbros, Ochuko Pedro, the company’s secretary, last night, gave a graphical details of all that transpired and ultimately culminated in the Willbros deal.

In a statement, Pedro said the Delta State government had realised the economic value of Willbros to the state, more so that it had been offered for sale and therefore chose to assist Ascot to obtain loan for the acquisition.
Pedro said the state government was interested in the deal but that the then governor, Ibori, was not disposed to debt of such magnitude for the incoming administration and therefore partnered Ascot in the acquisition deal.

“It offered securities to Ascot as collateral for a loan from Intercontinental Bank Plc. There were other third party collaterals as well. A combination of these third party assets and securities with those of Delta State government formed the security basket that became collateral for the loan offer from Intercontinental Bank. Delta State used a portion of its shares in Oceanic bank Int’l Plc for this transaction.
“The portion of Oceanic Bank shares released for the transaction was used as a bridging security for a period of 360 days during which it was expected that Ascot would have paid down the loan and the shares returned to the State Government. In consideration for this assistance, the State Government asked for economic compensation.

It asked for an equity stake option in the Company as a preferred investor at a discounted price of 80 cents to each $1 share. In other words, for every dollar share, the State Government would pay only 80 cents,” Pedro stated in the statement.
While establishing that Delta’s stakes in Ascot are duly documented, Pedro said: “Delta State did not invest directly in Ascot. It only provided securities for the loan facility for the leveraged buyout. Indeed, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) approved the loan of $160m to Ascot by Intercontinental Bank. These facts were thoroughly investigated by the EFCC under Nuhu Ribadu. The allegation that State funds were used to buy Ascot was totally proved false. The EFCC under Mrs. Waziri again carried out its own investigation and issued a clearance letter to Ascot. The said clearance letter is reproduced along with this publication.

“The investigation was again reopened between August and October 2009, when the EFCC, at the instigation of the Central Bank of Nigeria, moved against bank debtors. This round of investigations under the current leadership of the EFCC also showed there was no criminal infraction in the transaction. This was at a time Intercontinental Bank had itself legally proceeded against the Company in the Federal High Court, Lagos in an action that ended in the signing of Terms of Settlement by both parties for the payment of the debt on installment, which terms were pronounced upon as Judgment of the Court on 26th March, 2009.

Notwithstanding the consent judgment, the EFCC has nonetheless sought to override the judgment of the Federal High Court and impose its own regime of conditions on Ascot.
“The portion of Oceanic Bank shares used to part-secure the loan was never sold to pay off the loan obtained by Ascot. The Delta State Government, Intercontinental Bank Plc and Ascot have confirmed that the shares are still in place. This fact can easily be verified through the CSCS (Central Securities Clearing System).”

http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=171233

So when an asset is strategic, a state will help an individual to buy it?
And who is the individual?
With the calibre of Delta indigenes in Investment banking
So this is what they can come up with

They should go and explain this to EFCC and Justice Oyewole

How can you accuse me of lying?
Where is the proof?
Where has Islamic banking led to full sharia system
where?
And please don't use arguments of muslim countries where they had always had sharia system

But I want an example of a place where they had a secular system
and because of Islamic banking, they adopted sharia system wholesale

frosbel:
You have rampaged throughout this article skipping over all the evidence.
I hate totalitarian ideologies BUT I have nothing against MUSLIMS anywhere and everywhere.
You are personalising this whole thing thereby creating a euphoria of victim based mentality.

I see most of your posts directed at painting a hideous picture of Islam
I don't often see you tell us about christianity -its beauty, how it is practised
One gets the impression that you are diverting attention from the serious ills of christianity
at least the version practised in Nigeria
Of course, you have some things against Islam
Just like I have my misgivings about the way christians in Nigeria carry on about Islam
without any concern about objectivity
You still have, for instance, the screaming headlines about Muslims wanting to convert Nigeria into a sharia state
whereas that is also the goal of christians
and they are working assiduously towards it

Okay and ? Should we now have a Sharia calender ?
How can this be a valid response to my point
I said if using gregorian calendar has not turned us into idol worshippers
meaning that we have borrowed something from idolatory without becoming idol worshippers
why can we not borrow something from sharia - sharia compliant banking
without becoming a state with full sharia laws

You now take that to mean that we want sharia calendar
Did we ask for that?
I said I cannot borrow from a bank
because of riba
and I want a solution to it
frosbel:
Once again  you are missing the point.

Please start from the beginning of this thread and study my comments and videos carefully, then you will understand my argument.

Lets try and be diligent in our analysis of a thread and not just dart about looking for snippets of info that will assist you in launching personal attacks.

To be truthful, I have made my point and I am now weary of unnecessary accusation instead of debate.

You have NOT PROVIDED any source or article to support any of your points.

I refuse to continue arguing for the sake of it.
You asked how the banking system is based on quran
I gave you the quranic verse

Now what is wrong with Sharia banking as described by the FSA?
I don't want to pay interest, I don't want to take interest
I don't want to lend money for production of or trade in arms, alcohol etc
Now somebody says that muslims charge interest secretly
Then you are free not to patronise them!

You linked Sharia banking to Zakat and from there to Jihad
Based on what Qadrawi said

Now Jihad is halal - acceptable
If a citizen of US fights against an enemy, is that ok?
You say it is defence
But we know that Bush could not provide evidence for American invasion of Iraq
What about Sadam - was he attacking America
while Bush was defending?
So why should a muslim not fight against his enemy
And if I chose to call that Jihad
why should it be a problem
And Jihad has rules
But christians have not provided to me rules on how they fight

Obama, while receiving the nobel prize for peace, confessed that people will always fight wars
So what guidance is provided to christians when forced to fight
as Iraq was even the one forced to fight American invasion

Will a christian fight women, non combatants, etc?
Remember that a christian country was the first to use a weapon of mass destruction
and christians used incendiary bombs freely during WWII

So if defence is acceptable to christians
why should muslims not defend themselves and call it Jihad

That is what the authetic Jihad is
We have some renegades declaring their own versions
Just like you have some private individuals (Americans) conducting arrest, detention and execution
In Afghanistan during the Bush years

Now as for Zakat, it is money taken from the wealthy
and given to the poor
It is one of the pillars of Islam

So if christians pay tithe, I have no objection to it
Muslims will also continue to pay zakat
And that nothing can change that

So what is the link with Jihad?
It is tenuous, but given human mind ingenuity it is conceivable
First zakat is to be distributed in the community where it is collected

However, it is possible that people raise money on the net and divert it
Remember that if I contribute such money
say for the welfare of Bosnia Muslims
It may not get to them
And if ends up with AL Qaida
I may be among those renegades next victims (suicide bombing)
And you know suicide is haraam since
you have quoted from book 5 of Bukhari

And by the way, the Al Qaida people don't they give a damn
if I die from their actions
Of course, they can be likened to Reverend King
over whose actions Nigerian christians have no control
but might have to answer for

This is lengthy
I am sorry

Thats all you can come up with  undecided

The mounting evidence has overwhelmed you .  grin

Criticism of a system is now called hate.
Mounting?
Really

Seriously, you hate Islam
You make serious allegations without proof
You said because something is part of another
we cannot have a part

We use gregorian calendar in Nigerian since I can remember
But I have not on account of that started worshipping janus or februa

Now because you just jump from a bank being run by some private persons
to the overthrow of a complete legal and social system
You say the evidence is mounting

I have absolutely no qualms against Islamic banking, Christian banking, Hindu banking etc etc .

You see I like you believe in 100% freedom of worship and religion, expression and speech, provided it does not infringe on the rights and wishes of the general populace.

Kindly go through some of my previous comments. my problem is with the Sharia denotation.  Sharia banking is not seperate from Sharia as a system.

Therefore mathematically if  Sharia banking is a part of the Sharia system , it encompasses the entire concept of the Sharia system, its goals, determinations and ploys.

And it is common knowledge that some Islamic Scholars on the worldwide advisory board of Sharia banking are unrepentant proponents of a Worldwide Sharia system.

Now that is my problem, we DO NOT WANT A SHARIA SYSTEM, we want a SECUALR SYSTEM
Actually Sharia banking is separate from Sharia system
Lotus capital in Lagos is practising sharia banking
But does it have the ability to implement full scale sharia system
-marriage system, inheritance, penal codes etc
that is impossible!

if we follow your argument, we cannot extract anything from any system without
adopting the entire system wholesale
So those people practising Islamic Banking are on the way to implementing sharia system
while Palin & Co are watching?
There must be a limit to how much we stretch an argument
Because I cannot see how some people practising sharia banking
will suddenly  make it allowable for you to marry a second wife

And your secular here means western and in conformity with christian values
but intolerant of Islamic values

Why is it that christians want to have their own wants satisfied and at the same time
preclude others from same

Afterall, you don't allow us take Fridays off
Christians do take Sundays off

and according to the western system of democracy
that is fair, just and representative of the wishes of the people

Probing the allegations being put forward is not the issue. It is the body that is instituting the probe i have a problem with.
The State Assembly was implicated, therefore they cannot be neutral. Why not get a completely neutral body to fm the job?
By the way, which probe of this magnitude takes 2 weeks huh
Is the assembly legally empowered to do it?
Can it be done openly like the Justice Esho panel in Rivers State?

I'm not really surprised when most of them don't go to school and they love seeing one another amputated. This would just worsen the economic system of Nigeria because we could even have our own politicians amputate part of their bodies. Violence in any part of the world isn't the key to good economic growth, it is economic planning not "Sharia Law" PLEASE.
And with the yahoo yahoo education of the "christians" economic growth is assured
But Bible law will dliver it as in the South East

the muslims who want Sharia Law

is that what the Bible teaches?

@Frosbel
Sharia or Islamic Banking has a foundation in the quran
Allah says
"Those who eat Riba (usury) will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Satan leading him to insanity. That is because they say: 'Trading is only like Riba,' whereas Allah has permitted trading and forbidden Riba. So whosoever receives an admonition from his Lord and stops eating Riba shall not be punished for the past; his case is for Allah (to judge); but whoever returns (to Riba ), such are the dwellers of the Fire - they will abide therein. "(Qur’an 2:275)

However, you know very well that Islamic law is not based only on the quran

The quran commands muslims to pray
Everyday, muslims make the call to prayer 6 times
The text of what is said is not found in the quran
It is in the books of ahadeeth

So the explanation of Sharia banking principles is to be found in those books of ahadeeth

But it does not even matter that it is not in the quran
In so far as a thing was done, commanded or condoned by the Prophet (peace be upon Him)
A muslim who knows what he is really doing would accept it

Now, since you are saying sharia banking is injurious to you
why don't you just ignore any bank offering it

Oh, by the way, I have not been able to borrow from a bank in Nigeria
Because they would charge interest
and that is haraam

If you believe, as you claim, that there is freedom of expression
according to the Nigerian constitution, freedom of association
why would you deprive me of this opportunity being offered by islamic banking
